New Snowden Document Implies NSA May Be Putting Israel's Security Ahead of America's

George Washington's picture

The following leaked slide from Edward Snowden was released today by Glenn Greenwald in his new book, No Place to Hide:

If you can't read the slide, it says:

Balancing the SIGINT exchange equally between US and Israeli needs has been a constant challenge in the last decade, it arguably tilted heavily in favor of Israeli security concerns. 9/11 came, and went, with NSA's only true Third Party CT relationship being driven almost totally by the needs of the partner.

That is a stunning statement. It implies that the signals intelligence exchange between the American and Israeli governments has been driven almost entirely by the NSA giving information to the Israelis, instead of Israel giving information to the U.S. ... even though we were the ones attacked on 9/11.

Remember, the raw data on American citizens collected by the NSA is shared with Israel. As the Guardian reported in September:

The National Security Agency routinely shares raw intelligence data with Israel without first sifting it to remove information about US citizens, a top-secret document provided to the Guardian by whistleblower Edward Snowden reveals.

***

According to the agreement, the intelligence being shared would not be filtered in advance by NSA analysts to remove US communications. “NSA routinely sends ISNU [the Israeli Sigint National Unit] minimized and unminimized raw collection”, it says.

***

A much stricter rule was set for US government communications found in the raw intelligence. The Israelis were required to “destroy upon recognition” any communication “that is either to or from an official of the US government“. Such communications included those of “officials of the executive branch (including the White House, cabinet departments, and independent agencies), the US House of Representatives and Senate (member and staff) and the US federal court system (including, but not limited to, the supreme court)”.

This not only raises major privacy concerns for American citizens, but it might mean that Israel is spying on the American Congress and other high-level politicians.

We have nothing against Israel, but - as American citizens - we want our intelligence agencies to put the American people and American security first.

This is why reports of massive Israeli spying on the US surprises me.  I mean, why do they need to spy?  They have direct access to any information they want.

Why do you feel compelled to write "we have nothing against Israel"? What are you afraid of? Just say it...

Given the number of governments you (rightly) critize here, thank god you don't have to use such a disclaimer every time.

Here's the simple answer missed by 50 AIDS members (Anti Israel Derangment Syndrome) here giving the thumbs up.  GW didn't write the article, the SIGINT guys or some other intelligence guys did and they don't hate Israel but think they're getting too good a deal here compared to what the US is getting in return.

Agreed. I find the need for that disclaimer to be a sign of cowardice. It's the fear of being called an "anti-semite", which is a word so overused that it has become meaningless. An anti-semite used to mean "somebody who hates jews", now it means somebody that disagrees with a jew. Fuck that shit.

Only slaves fear being called anti-semite.

For free humans with a free mind and honest spirit, it is the highest honor to be called anti-semite.

http://www.newsweek.com/israels-aggressive-spying-us-mostly-hushed-250278

"Beginning in the mid-1990s, well after Israel promised to stop spying in the U.S. in the wake of the Pollard affair, the FBI regularly felt compelled to summon Israeli diplomats in D.C. for a scolding, two former top counterintelligence officials told Newsweek. During the decade following 9/11, one said, the Israelis were summoned “dozens” of times and told to “cut the shit,” as one, a former top FBI official, put it. But as an “ally,” the Israelis almost always got off with only a warning.

But no matter how stern the FBI’s lecture – usually delivered personally to the embassy’s senior intelligence representative – the Israelis were unmoved, another former top intelligence official said. “You can't embarrass an Israeli,” he said. “It’s just impossible to embarrass them. You catch them red-handed, and they shrug and say, 'Okay now, anything else?'”"

You believe you, or your concerns, have any influence in this Nation at all?

What is incredible about this is the fact that the raw intelligence includes USSA government communications. So the NSA must be hosepiping everything under the sun including POTUS and the Supremes communications and is then simply turning that over to a foreign country with the polite request they burn stuff they shouldn't read before they read it!!!!!!!!!

I thought Ukraine was a failed state. Turns out its patron is in even worse shape but has yet to acknowledge this fact. Go USSA!!

AND - wanna bet that the 3rd party is harvesting all those illicit nuggets of information and then passing them on to a 4th state with instructions to burn them before reading and after you make payment. And I bet you find a 5th state sitting on this intelligence chain. Everybody in the world has access to USSA state secrets except for the peons that pay for this insanity.

No, what is happening is that Israel is using that information from govt. officials and Americans for blackmail and greymailing of individuals and such.  What moron allowed this to be done and sent to a foreign country that is known to spy on the US and use blackmail and greymail?  You are correct, we are a failed state and who allowed this to happen is either working for a foreign state and/or is a religious zealot who is to unstable to have made this decision.  Either way, they gave Israel the keys to controlling the US, govt. and the people.

Must not be.  This is the only place I have seen anything about this news.

It should be news, right?  I mean, you would think that our govt officials would be concerned, right?  Raising hell about it, right?  What about our news reporters?  Their communications are vitally important when it comes to sources and private communications anytime they are pressed by courts or politicians (rightly so), so let's see how big they blow this up.  So far, total silence, and Greenwald is all over the news shows promoting his new book.

I'm late to the party here so let me start off with the two words that weren't highlighted right before, "it arguably".  So what's the argument?  I don't know, GW didn't bring that to the article because GW drives his crowd to blame Israel for everything and counter arguments need not apply.  Second, GW clearly isn't concerned that we know when this happened or what changed after this was written.  What date is the slide from?  GW either doesn't know or doesn't care.  To me, this is more of our government being sloppy and lazy rather than bowing down to Israel.

I submit that the NSA has almost nothing to do with America’s security anymore. Rather it is all about preserving the perverted institution that American government has warped into (it ain’t ‘merica anymore) and the criminal and hypocrite individuals that (presently) control it.

Gee, last I looked most of the cute tykes were sending nude selfies to each other via their personal smart phones..

that's after having had sex with their teacher.

That should keep NSA and DHS interested.
