There have many credible reports, from those who were in Afghanistan, that stated clearly that fellow soldiers were under orders of silence in reference to the desertion of Bowe Bergdahl. That is somewhat understandable. However… If a reporter was able to reach out to those same troops, and get them to break that silence, would that be enough to get that reporter killed?
On June 7, 2012 Michael Hastings had a piece published in Rolling Stone titled America's Last Prisoner of War. This was not a fluff piece. It was hard-hitting journalism that was the trademark of Michael Hastings' reporting. Even back in 2012, Hastings was reporting that Bowe was a deserter and a lot of the stories you have been hearing and reading over the last week stemmed from that ground-breaking account. He was ahead of his time and effectively blew the lid off this story long before it was a story. Here is a brief excerpt from the article, although I would encourage you to read it in full.

For Bergdahl, i have not closely followed the story but maybe consider the guy to have suffered some sort of mental issue. He may well have seen the futility of the war and this affected him, after all not many sane people wander off in search of an enemy that is known to kill you and hold you captive for years. It is extremely unfortunate that his colleagues died trying to find him and my sympathies/condolences are with the families of all those killed in this totally unnecessary war.

I am French and today I want to say "Yankees you really kicked ass in 1944". I know my father was a kid growing up in Normandy. From what he says back then his cousins (girls older) were dreaming of dating an American soldier, and small kids were getting chocolate from the American soldiers. Small kids would play "les Americains" in the school yard, even to this day my father does not listen to criticism about America....
Well done America. Now it is time to get rid of your current crap and come back. Stand up again, You can do it!
I visited Normandy and spent an above average amount of time photographing the battle scenes. It was fascinating,
But time spent in the war cemeteries was one of the most moving experiences i can remember. It is impossible not to be in awe when you consider the human toll for what was accomplished.
