Debt Ceiling Negotiators Propose a "Super Congress" To Do the Dirty Work and Avoid the Wrath of Voters

George Washington's picture

Huffington Post reports:

Debt ceiling negotiators think they've hit on a solution to address the debt ceiling impasse and the public's unwillingness to let go of benefits such as Medicare and Social Security that have been earned over a lifetime of work: Create a new Congress.

This "Super Congress," composed of members of both chambers and both parties, isn't mentioned anywhere in the Constitution, but would be granted extraordinary new powers.

***

Legislation approved by the Super Congress ... would then be fast-tracked through both chambers, where it couldn't be amended by simple, regular lawmakers, who'd have the ability only to cast an up or down vote. With the weight of both leaderships behind it, a product originated by the Super Congress would have a strong chance of moving through the little Congress and quickly becoming law. A Super Congress would be less accountable than the system that exists today, and would find it easier to strip the public of popular benefits.

Michael Rivero comments:

This article is correct. The Constitution does not provide for such a sham. This group of 12 will do the dirty work so that the rest of Congress can evade the wrath of the voters in 2012. No doubt the 6 Senators will not be up for re-election in 2012 while the 6 house members will either be impossible to defeat or predicted to lose anyway no matter what they do.

Just another ploy to pilfer our pockets.  Whats really sad is they will promise the moon so the people will not rise up and do anything.  I hate to agree with politicians on how they view most Americans. They think most Americans have a short term memory loss.  Give them their remote controls and SNAP and all is well.

They will continue to rape the people and most of them will love them for it.  WoW and we think the EU is in trouble!  Most likely they will be politicians that intend to retire or cannot be re-elected.  Seeing as they are again breaking the Constitutional rules, they may even bring in former president's and retired Congressional members while they are at it. I can see the headlines now.

Carter and Clinton Save the USA!

So....

In America you've got elections... for guys and dolls that don't do shit... besides filling their pockets....

and...

other who are not elected run the shit... because... if the real congress would need to do stuff... that's bad for the people... it would damage their popularity....

and now they have somebody... TO USE AS A SCAPEGOAT AND BLAME STUFF ON?!!

GENIUS!!

If only Marx and Lenin where still alive...

WHO CAME UP WITH THIS IDEA?!! CHINA?!! RUSSIA?!!! LIBYA?!!

WHY CAN'T I HAVE A SLAVE WHO DOES MY WORK, WHILE I GET PAID FOR IT!

The last time America had a system like that... it took a guy with a beard and a large nose... and a civil war to fix it...

No I think not. After WW1 Germany was forced to print like crazy to repay their debt which caused the Hyper inflationary episode there, which led to the rise of Hitler.

Our debtors will want their money and will fight us for it. Maybe not here, but maybe here.

The best solution would be the launch of a new US currency for use by US citizens to conduct their in country trade. Back it with Gold, silver, oil, land, natural gas...etc.

Then gather up all the old currency and put it on a ship bound for China. - "Here is all that money we borrowed from you. Thanks a ton for the lead painted toys and toxic sheet rock."

How about the names, political affiliations, recent political contributions and /or recent bank deposits for these so called "Debt Ceiling Negotiators".

There is no rule of law. None. Just a bunch of corrupt politicians living in fantasy land, thinking their legislation has any weight or meaning.

I have long thought the (D) or (R) after a politician's name is a useless distraction. A more informative set of initials to see when they're interviewed or quoted would represent their top three donor(s). (O) Oil, (F) Financial, (P) Pharma, (D) Defense, U (Unions), (A) Attorneys, (I) Insurance, etc.

Doubt any of them would rate a (C) Citizens.

Gary Snyder once wrote a thoughtful essay suggesting that other species get Congressional representation.  Sequoias, wolverines, etc.

Maybe we just break it into political-economic interests, including kids, the unemployed, soccer moms, and so on, and then let them have at it.  Yes, cranky white guys who hate paying for things get a rep too :*)

But public interests get two votes for every corporate interests' one.  There, fixed.

I remember that essay, Jim.  I also recall the poem about all the important little men running around DC while bird soars overhead: the last line of the poem:  "The world does what it wants."

If most of the pols that are there now were doing what a representative should be doing, there would be absolutely no need for another layer of elitist political bull and pumpkin show ringmasters in Washington. How blatant are they trying to make their lust for power seem? Don't need to get elected? Oh, hang on a minute, those folks that are there already paid there way in. Nevermind.

Guys who follow the teachings of Ron Paul and once Ron Paul is elected president in 2012 he can unincorporate the corporate DC government that was established in 1870 thanks to the Organic District of Columbia Act.

After a few years, the 'Super Congress' could appoint a 'Supreme Leader' who's will could not be challenged at any level of government.  In order to allow the Supreme Leader to push through unpopular but necessary legislation without having to make political compromises that could 'Damage its effectiveness', he would be given the position for life.

The transformation will then be complete.

And still the population will fail to notice what has happened, and will remain glued to their reality TV.

Just cease to exist and vanish into the pages of history.

Stop trying to make tyranny work.  It doesn't.  It just causes pain, agony, injustice, destruction and economic collapse.

as others have already pointed out, the debt combined

with the future obligations, SS and medicare,

are already too large for the people to be able to pay.

Larger than GDP.

If the budget is really balanced now, the resulting job losses will destroy the whole economy.

If its not, the money printing will.

Don't be a tool.

Under a plan put forth by Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) and his counterpart Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.), legislation to lift the debt ceiling would be accompanied by the creation of a 12-member panel made up of 12 lawmakers -- six from each chamber and six from each party.

Trias Politica? This all is starting to become very weird.

Also the honorable members of Congress are about to become politically obsolete. Which always happens to democratic representatives, after political power has been handed to olichargs. They've served their purpose.

The political system itself is obsolete. It has passed its useful life and no longer gives answers to the problems. It functioned while enjoying the ride of growth, during which time the act of governing didn't actually required any special knowledge or thinking. If one looks at history, it has always misbehaved in the absence of a favourable environment. It has been designed to 'go along', not to solve problems as they may occur, ie can-kicking.
