Israel Shoots Down Unidentified Drone Over Its Airspace

Tyler Durden's picture

Just because the middle east did not have enough countries and/or terrorist organizations shooting at random things, in outright attempts of provocation or otherwise, here comes Israel to join the party. From Reuters: "The Israeli air force shot down a drone after it crossed into southern Israel on Saturday, the military said, but it remained unclear where the aircraft came from. "An unmanned aerial vehicle was identified penetrating Israeli air space this morning, and was intercepted by the Israeli Air Force at approximately 10 a.m. (0700 GMT)," the military said in a brief statement. Soldiers were searching the area where the drone was downed - in the northern part of the Negev desert - to locate and identify the drone, the statement said. The Negev desert is near Israel's southern borders with the Gaza Strip, Egypt, Jordan and the occupied West Bank."

Drones... drones... which middle east country has a vibrant and advanced avionics industry. Must be Egypt, or no, Jordan, actually make that Syria or even Iran. Good thing it can never be Uncle Sam. Things might get just a little odd in that case.

All joking aside, though, it was only a week ago that Iran unveiled its first drone, potentially after reverse engineering the US RJ-170 that crashed on its territory back in December. From Al Jazeera:

Iran's Revolutionary Guards have unveiled a home-built long-range drone capable of reaching most of the Middle East, including the Islamic state's primary regional enemy Israel, state television has reported.

The reconnaissance drone, named Shahed 129, has a range of 2,000 km and is capable of carrying bombs and missiles, state television said.

Amir Ali Hajizadeh, the head of the Revolutionary Guards' aerospace arm, spoke during an interview on Tuesday on Iran's state TV.

Hajizadeh said that Iranian scientists designed and developed the drone.

His description of the aircraft was similar to that of the United States' RQ-170 Sentinel unmanned reconnaissance aircraft, one of which went down in Iranian territory last year.

So let's see:

  • US drone mysteriously crashes in Iran in one piece
  • Iran's engineers reverse engineer and create their own drone industry
  • So far unidentifed drone has just been shot down by Israel

What are the Intrade odds of Israel claiming in a few hours it was an Iran drone, and the overflight was a provocation and merits immediate retaliation? One thing we know: odds will be much higher in a few days when CVN-74 and LHA-5 reach their destination.

In the meantime, this blast from the past:

Did the US really need 10,000 warheads during the cold war?  What did the US leadership want the world to think would happen if the US was attacked with nukes and utterly obliterated?

Did the US really need 10,000 warheads during the cold war?

US war corporations needed to manufacture 10,000 warheads, and all the other war toys that make the boys enlist with pride, for honour, and national corporate profit.

the "nuke deterrent" story is a good one, but close examination of current reality adds to the narrative exponentially. . .

Leaks confirm death of top Russian general in Syria

Contrary to an official denial on Moscow’s behalf, leaked documents aired by Al Arabiya suggest that a Russian military general who worked as a military advisor to the Syrian regime was indeed killed by opposition forces on Aug.

Maj. Gen. Vladimir Kojève was reportedly killed when opposition Free Syrian Army raided his car. Following his death, a number of documents were obtained from his personal briefcase which was found inside his vehicle.

CIA-backed terrorists killing Russian generals... yeah very bullish!

If the Russian know who did it, then they will get a visit from some very hard core customers. Way back in the Lebanon Civil war, certain groups began to kidnap and kill Russian embassy staff and other private Russian parties in lebanon. This all ceased VERY quickly, a few relatives of those who did the kidnapping and killing were found all messed up and dead on these people's front doorsteps. Russian secret service decided it was better to target relatives than the actual killers and this tends to work better. Fighters are often prepared to die, but they are not prepared to see thier families die! Russia played hardball, and it worked. Not saying it was right, but that's how Russia roles sometimes.

Canada’s Involvement with Israeli drone companies.
http://wanderingraven.wordpress.com/2012/07/20/canadas-involvement-with-...
.
Canada has many connections with Israeli drone companies, which are particularly problematic because Israeli’s drone companies are all intimately involved in the ongoing illegal occupation of Palestine by the Israeli state. All of them have numerous worldwide investments, and use foreign suppliers (including Canadian ones) to create the drones that they sell worldwide based their ‘conflict tested’ status.

Presently Canada is considering purchasing drones for the military. This is being evaluated in a programme called Project JUSTAS. As Project JUSTAS nears completion it is worth examining the relationships that Canada and Canadian companies have with the Israeli drones industry.

Rented Heron drones for Afghanistan through Macdonald DettwilerAssociates

Perhaps the most explicit relationship between Canada and Israeli drone companies has been the rental of Heron drones for surveillance purposes by Canadian Forces operating in Afghanistan. Canada rented Heron drones for surveillance purposes and returned them recently when they were no longer required.

In Pakistan we use drones for targeted killing which more often than not kill civilians. The locals can hear people trapped in the bomb rubble screaming, including children, but no one dares approach and rescue the victims, because the USA drones target anyone who trys to resuce the trapped. This is a fact, Pakistani locals claim there are now more radical Islamists than there were before the drone war kicked off. I wonder why? Young men see and hear this and grow up to want revenge. Target rescuers? To me that is the definition of Terrorist!

Mohajer (UAV)

Iran's UAV program was launched in the wake of the 1980-88 war with Iraq. Iran had also been investing in several families of attack and multirole UAV. Over the years, Iranian officials reported the deployment of target drones and such UAVs as the Mohajer-3 (also called Hodhod or "a hooded bird") and the Mohajer-4.

Early models of the Mohajer were reportedly used during the late 1990s on reconnaissance missions into Afghanistan during their civil war, and were also tested during the 1990s as aerial weapons platforms using the RPG-7 series of rocket propelled grenade launcher.

The Mohajer-4 underwent a test flight on 16 February 2002. The Saeqeh UAV was tested at the same time. Minister of Defense and Armed Forces Logistics, Ali Shamkhani, said that Iran was one of the few countries to have the knowledge for designing and building UAVs.

On 7 November 2004, Hezbollah, an Islamic militant organization with close ties to Iran, flew a Mohajer-4 over northern Israel for approximately 5 minutes. The UAV entered Israeli airspace at more than 100 knots and an altitude of about 1,000 feet. After briefly flying over the seaside city of Nahariya, the UAV fell into the sea as it returned to Lebanon. An embarassment for the Israeli government, the overflight proved to be a symbolic success for Hezbollah, which claimed the flight to be an appropriate response to Israeli incursions over Lebanon.

The prominent London-based Arab daily newspaper, Ash-Sharq Al- Awsat, quoted an unnamed senior officer with the Iranian Revolutionary Guards as saying Iran has sold 8 Mohajer-4s to Hezbollah.

Bullshit.

It is highly unlikely this drone was flown from Iran.

Command and control of the aircraft would be a bitch for them from that distance without their own satellites, or radio control facilities close by. Tehran is about 1000 miles away.

Also consider that it is damn near impossible to fly anything between Israel and Iran and not be picked up by the X-Band early warning radar installation operating atop Mount Keren in the Negev. It is the same radar the U.S. uses in the missile defense shield. There are a couple hundred U.S. service members working at this facility.

The X-Band radar, made by Raytheon, is also known as the Army Navy Transportable Surveillance Radar (AN/TPY-2). 2,900 range. The system can detect objects the size of a softball thrown in the air at over 1700 miles.

No. They know exactly where this aircraft originated.

Things do not just appear in Israeli airspace. Especially over the Negev.

Iranian politician: IAEA shared Tehran’s nuclear secrets with Israel

"Amano's repeated trips to Tel Aviv and asking the Israeli officials' views about Iran's nuclear activities indicates that Iran's nuclear information has been disclosed to the Zionist regime [Israel] and other enemies of the Islamic Republic," Jahangirzadeh told Press TV.

http://rt.com/news/iran-nuclear-un-iaea-796/

--

And this is pretty clear, Iran wants accurate site targeting data:

--

IAEA should provide Iran with Israel atomic program data

Iran’s nuclear chief Fereydoun Abbasi says the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) should provide Tehran with information about the location and number of Israel’s nuclear facilities in spirit of fairness.

“I suggested that the agency’s secretary general provides Iran with the geographical coordinates and number of the enrichment facilities of Israel, which is Iran’s enemy, so that both parties have equal chance for attack,” Abbasi said on Tuesday.

http://theiranproject.com/blog/2012/09/18/iaea-should-provide-iran-with-...

--

The more that the US/NATO alliance, and also Israel incites Teheran now the less and less effective it's likely to be at deterring Iran from military action, or in causing them to 'comply' (but then again, the US policy to Japan before Pearl Harbour was not designed to deter Japan either, it was designed to force an attack, or a surrender).

The coercive economic and diplomatic strategy of the US Treasury and State Depts have basically collapsed into failure.  Iran will not do anything the US wants from here on but it is prepared to do things that Washington and the Pentagon should not want to occur.
