The CEO Letter Heard Around The World "Vote Obama; Lose Your Job"

Tyler Durden's picture

NewsBusters reports on THE letter from David Siegel, the founder and CEO of real estate company Westgate Resorts on Monday threatened to fire some employees if Barack Obama is reelected and carries out his plan to raise taxes on the so-called rich. The following are highlights from an email message sent by Siegel to his staff that was obtained and verified as authentic by Gawker. "The economy doesn't currently pose a threat to your job. What does threaten your job however, is another 4 years of the same Presidential administration."

Subject: Message from David Siegel
Date:Mon, 08 Oct 2012 13:58:05 -0400 (EDT)
From: [David Siegel]
To: [All employees]

To All My Valued Employees,

As most of you know our company, Westgate Resorts, has continued to succeed in spite of a very dismal economy. There is no question that the economy has changed for the worse and we have not seen any improvement over the past four years. In spite of all of the challenges we have faced, the good news is this: The economy doesn't currently pose a threat to your job. What does threaten your job however, is another 4 years of the same Presidential administration. Of course, as your employer, I can't tell you whom to vote for, and I certainly wouldn't interfere with your right to vote for whomever you choose. In fact, I encourage you to vote for whomever you think will serve your interests the best. [...]

Now, the economy is falling apart and people like me who made all the right decisions and invested in themselves are being forced to bail out all the people who didn't. The people that overspent their paychecks suddenly feel entitled to the same luxuries that I earned and sacrificed 42 years of my life for. Yes, business ownership has its benefits, but the price I've paid is steep and not without wounds. Unfortunately, the costs of running a business have gotten out of control, and let me tell you why: We are being taxed to death and the government thinks we don't pay enough. We pay state taxes, federal taxes, property taxes, sales and use taxes, payroll taxes, workers compensation taxes and unemployment taxes. I even have to hire an entire department to manage all these taxes. The question I have is this: Who is really stimulating the economy? Is it the Government that wants to take money from those who have earned it and give it to those who have not, or is it people like me who built a company out of his garage and directly employs over 7000 people and hosts over 3 million people per year with a great vacation?

Obviously, our present government believes that taking my money is the right economic stimulus for this country. The fact is, if I deducted 50% of your paycheck you'd quit and you wouldn't work here. I mean, why should you? Who wants to get rewarded only 50% of their hard work? Well, that's what happens to me. [...]

Business is at the heart of America and always has been. To restart it, you must stimulate business, not kill it. However, the power brokers in Washington believe redistributing wealth is the essential driver of the American economic engine. Nothing could be further from the truth and this is the type of change they want.

So where am I going with all this? It's quite simple. If any new taxes are levied on me, or my company, as our current President plans, I will have no choice but to reduce the size of this company. Rather than grow this company I will be forced to cut back. This means fewer jobs, less benefits and certainly less opportunity for everyone.

So, when you make your decision to vote, ask yourself, which candidate understands the economics of business ownership and who doesn't? Whose policies will endanger your job? Answer those questions and you should know who might be the one capable of protecting and saving your job. While the media wants to tell you to believe the "1 percenters" are bad, I'm telling you they are not. They create most of the jobs. If you lose your job, it won't be at the hands of the "1%"; it will be at the hands of a political hurricane that swept through this country.

You see, I can no longer support a system that penalizes the productive and gives to the unproductive. My motivation to work and to provide jobs will be destroyed, and with it, so will your opportunities. If that happens, you can find me in the Caribbean sitting on the beach, under a palm tree, retired, and with no employees to worry about.

 Signed, your boss,

 David Siegel

For those unfamiliar with Siegel, he is the founder and CEO of Westgate Resorts, a real estate and timeshare company.

He and his wife were also the subject of the recent documentary "The Queen of Versailles" about their desire to build the largest home in America.

According to Gawker, they were worth over a billion dollars in 2007, but that could be less now as a result of the real estate bust.

My point is this:

This guy is a beneficiary of the welfare state, and too stupid to realize it.  Cut out the deficit spending and all the welfare dollars he collects from bankers, defense contractor employees, college professors, SEC porn-surfers, etc. etc vanish.

Over 40% of GDP is government spending, so just 'cause you write a check to the IRS, it doesn't mean you're a taxpayer.  And while it's good for all these people's self-esteem that they don't think of themselves as moochers, they are.

More like 60% of GDP is government spending and related to government spending. I'm not even sure if that is high enough.

16 trillion wasn't spend on welfare cheques to Chicago residents or SNAP cards.

You have no idea how much he has benefited from the welfare state. Thats a stupid speculation on your part. Maybe he would have done ten times better without this piece of garbage system. Anyone who can builkd a 7000 person company is a productive person. They dont need to government unlike you. go back to the teat to beg for some more milk from mama

Income taxes don't tax wealth. They tax income. Rich people HAVE a lot of money. They don't necessarily MAKE a lot of money. The income tax only steals money as you earn it, creating a situation where people can not accumulate wealth to become "rich". Of course, you can continue to listen to your "liberal" politicians telling you how they need to raise income taxes to stick it to the rich. But rich people honestly don't give a rat'z donkey fuck about income taxes. And rich people don't really give a fuck about inheritance taxes either, tax the guy with $30m at the same rate as someone with $30bn and the richer person becomes richer in comparison.

But the math-challenged covetous retards don't get it. They just think "tax rich, give to me".

And that's how you make yourself a slave.

The government of the USA no longer has a functional framework as it has been co-opted by lobbyists and those in power who grant favourable legislation for rewards. A lack of integrity amongst politicians and business leaders has lead to the un-workable regulations, tax codes and loopholes that discourage new business formation in general as you need an army of lawyers/accountants to figure things out. An under-class of free-loaders who try to work the system is also a major problem. The government has promised too many programs that are un-affordable. Things need to be made more simple and efficient. Foul actors need to be prosecuted. Obama's failure to prosecute the Wall Street criminals is why I can't vote for him.

Ben you need to double your money printing pronto so that David Siegel spends his dollars before they become confetti. Go Bernanke, you are the unsung hero of all farmers in the world, and all financial assets ( your finanical asset is the debt of the farmer) will get wacked (equities too through inflation). Ben Bernanke is a true hero that is making bond going burnt crisp. And David Siegel, I hope you spend the dollars on the balance sheet of your company pronto. Financial repression is directed at financial assets owners, :-) :0 ;-)

Bernanke is a hero. He prints money so that corporations are forced to borrow and spend or spend their net cash. Fuck the cash hoarders Ben, and Krugman is right, we need a lot more inflation and Bernanke is going too slowly.

"Vote Obama; Lose your Job"... More likely "Re-elect Obama; lose your Ass" - "Elect an Ass; Lose your Ass".

Seriously, if ObamaCare goes into effect, if you work for a company that has between 51 -100 employees and does not offer health insurance, watch out - you may lose your job or be cut back to part time and then have the double whammy of paying the ObamaCare tax. Then fix the law by penalizing circumvention of the law, such as done with bank anti-structuring laws and the DMCA.

Maybe 90% of failures are from companies not nuzzling up to the right government teat.  Then having to compete with those that do.

The government has gone way beyond its rightful scope. Until we define the proper roll of government (providing courts and protecting property rights) you can short the government accordingly.

Posted this on another site about the same article:

I tried this in 2008. Told my staff of 3 that there would be only one left in March if the Bamster was elected. They voted for him anyway and all three were gone by April.

So many people voted for Bam in 2008 based upon the emotion of the times, the idea that he represented all their frustration in being held back due to race, gender, etc. When you ask them now, only a few percent will tell you the truth of why they did this and if they regret it. Many are sorry, but they actually blame middle age white guys for “making them do it”.

I am guessing a LOT regret their decision, but will tell no one if they intend to change their vote this time around. They see what a light weight and a disaster the Bamster is, the truth has been revealed. Who wants to admit they were duped.

People will not vote their self interest on this thing, the race will be very close. White guilt and “social justice” are very powerful motivators.

The "false choice of left vs right/R vs D" and "Romney is no better" crowd will descend, but who can defend the utter incompetence displayed by the Bamster?

I personally belief obama is evil and is a statist/marxist who does not like tis country

Romney may or may not be a statist but i believe he has a sole and a belief in god and that for me is enough to vote for him.

When the shit hits the fan and it will soon i like the odds of going back to the constitution and bill of rights better with romney at the head. If its obama i know he thinks the constitution is an outdated document

March '09 when market hit rock bottom ...

schu, be at least honest here in the safety of your anonymity ..

would you have held on to the employees if McCain/Palin got in after the devastating market crashes of '08 and '09?

You can fool yourself only for so long, bud. I admit I swallowed all the bullshit about Obama from the web hook, line and sinker and thought the guy's term was the beginning of the end of the world.

Now four years later, trillions in debt which benefited the super wealthy and kept the economy afloat enough so the bottom wouldn't fall out ... and we're still talking about Obama "the great marxist and socialist" .. bull crap I tell ya.

Look at Romney's record though. He's the epidemy of vulture capitalist and much (not all) that has gone wrong over decades of financial manipulation. That's his record. Not rumors, not fiction. Strictly record. That's a measure of success to some, I guess. To me it's a sad sad statement of greed, extortion and exploitation.

Let's just take a look at those policies/legislation we have had to endure under the Bamster:

Stimulus

Government Motors

Dodd/Frank

ObamaCare

Oil Drilling Moratorium

These are all the Bamsters work, I would like to see some defense of these things.  Have they helped or hurt us?

No, these are legislations that were written well before Obama took office. Obama just happened to be the guy in the White House who was told to enact them.

Stimulus was passed at the very beginning of O's term. Full of pork as the GOP pointed it out. That same bill would have passed under McCain. Make no mistake.

"Obama"Care is an expansion of Medicare and Medicaid which were both GOP enacted legislations under Bush if I recall correctly. The single largest contributor to Bush's campaigns was Big Pharma and not Big Military as often cited.

"Drill Baby Drill" is just as unpopular with GOP as with Dems. For different reasons or so they say. Don't you think that if we had wanted to "Drill Baby Drill" right here in the US, we could have done that in 8 years with Bush when our oil supply from the Middle East looked at least somewhat frail???? It would have made so much sense. That oil was there well before Bush's two terms as well.

Bush and the GOP had 8 FUCKING YEARS to "DRILL BABY DRILL" and ZIP! Why?

LOL!

This and blame Bush plus McCain would have done the same.

Is this all you got?  If they were bad policies, why did Bam agree to them?

Unless of course he is a complete fool.

This so-called "businessman"  DEFAULTED on his own house!  His business was all but gone... if not for Geithner and Bernanle - both appointed by Obama!  ZIRP and "extend & pretend" are the 2 reasons why his business is even "alive." Without Benny and Tim he would've been in bankruptsy and his business would have been carved up and sold to "vultures."

And instead of asking how can he better pay back Obama for what he's done for him and for 1% in general,  this ungrateful MoFo wants Obama out of office?  Yeah, sure.  But remember this:  Obama is not Ralph Nader, not Dennis Kucinich, not Lenin, Maa or Robespierre.

Ok, it's Romney after Obama.  But it's going to be Lenin/Mao/Rebespierre after Romney!   Pay 3% extra tax (after grabbing 93% of all gains) or guillotine?   This dumb MoFo made his pick

Thousands of businesses are reviewing payrolls right now to make sure they aren't over the obamacare 50 employee threshold.  Entire departments can be spun off or outsourced to avoid obamacare.

obamacare states the threshold of part time is under 30 hours a week.   Government will be devastating workers, requiring them to now get two part time jobs to get enough hours, instead of work one.

What the guy said is true. But as so many pointed out he probably became a CEO by total underhanded dealings. I have worked for those kind of guys. They have lots of money and they get angry when they loose it but they run all over their employees who are trying to make the company successful, just because they can. That is how America works today. So while I don't want to hear the guy whine because he can't buy another Ferrari, I understand that it is very dificult to start companies today.

Focusing not on the man, but on the message, he is exactly right.  Under the Statists, Democrat or Republican, there is little to no incentive to build.  The incentive is to become a taker.  And even the builders will go into wait-and-see mode for a long time, waiting out the Statists.  Until builders calculate that the rewards outweigh their risks, they will not be in building mode.

There are thousands of business owners that are hanging by their fingernails and scared shitless about this election.

Many have deferred maintenance and improvements out of a lack of confidence and uncertainty as to what the government will do next.

I personally know many business owners that will close down shortly after the election if Obama is re elected.

I also know many that will take out new personal loans and reinvest in their businesses if Romney wins.

Romney and his ilk are a gang of vulture capitalists. They crash the system and buy on the cheap. Good luck with that personal investment into a company when all goes to shits BY DESIGN. They will probably not own their companies once they're forced to liquidate to Romney's clan for cents on the Dollar.

So you like Boss Tweed?  That's what you're wishing to re-introduce to the United States - something un-American enough to warrant its own HUAC and associated blacklists.

Anyone working at such a business would do well to look for anything that is legally actionable against the business owner and document it.  Then prevent or mitigate the business owner's sabotage by making their decision cost them their assets or their freedom - depending on the violations found.

If there is much more of this sabotage, I'd expect the US government to consider these people equivalent to AQ or drug runners.

"The fact is, if I deducted 50% of your paycheck you'd quit and you wouldn't work here. I mean, why should you? Who wants to get rewarded only 50% of their hard work? Well, that's what happens to me."

The fact of the matter is that for years corporate chieftains have raped their employees...sorry, but it's true.  They've substituted 401k's for pensions, they've reduced the medical coverages, they've watched passively - while health insurance companies have provided less benefits for more money.  They've reduced compensation, while asking employees to relocate and work longer hours.  This has gone on year after year after year

The top 1%'s compensation has grown enormously during this period.

I have no problem with business owners taking more compensation, but you can't ignore the plight of the worker forever.  The guy doing the work has ultimately been getting screwed a tidge more year after year after year.

Now, the rubber meets the road.

It's the government or the corporation owners that are going to have to pay down the debt.  Will politicians ever take less ? .... guess who's going to lose Mr. Business Owner

They can't take blood from a stone.  The workers have nothing left to give.
