Real-Time New York City Storm Surge Tracker

Tyler Durden's picture

Update: good news: the storm surge is now receding. The water level has to decline by 2-3 feet for the flooding to subside.

http://tidesandcurrents.noaa.gov/cgi-bin-mp/data_plot.cgi?mins=&datum=6&unit=1&stn=8518750&bdate=20121028&edate=20121030&data_type=wl&relative=&type=Tide%20Data&shift=d&plot_size=large&relative=&wl_sensor_hist=&plot_backup=

Curious how many feet of water the rats in downtown NYC are under right now? The real-time answer is available after the jump below, courtesy of the NOAA and this tide height tracker at New York's Battery.

6-11ft was predicted as the "worst case scenario" storm surge.

Currently at 13.46 ft .... what's do you call a worse than worst case?

Edit: maybe they should have evacuated Zones B and maybe C also ... wonder what effects of that will be?

Still an amazing amount of legacy infrastructure is in basements or below street level ... HVAC, electric switchboards, phone/data switches, even many network routers and switches have been placed there because geeks' plumbing has always gotten stuffed away out of sight ... that's how it was done since the days of water and sewerage systems I suppose.

Subways will flood even with just heavy rains, at least the 4-5-6 lines in MNH, because the pump system is old and underpowered. When those lines are down, the entire east side is basically shut down to commuters - you can't run enough buses to make up the shortfall. Will be interested to see how long it takes to get those lines cleared.

Dc area getting pounded. Maybe they misread this thing but it looks like it came ashore near Maryland shore to me and is absolutely pounding my area now. We are getting very heavy winds and rain since about 6pm and that's after a day of mild rain and moderate winds. This thing is every bit as bad if not even worse than Isabel in 2003.

I just hope the media shows up for the after-hype party. Reported claiming 30 foot waves offshore while standing on the first floor balcony of a hotel. I've been in thirty-foot waves and brother, you don't know thirty foot waves. In Katrina, I was on an overpass 12 miles from shore, and the water was only two feet below us. We had a hammer and used it to break a small chip in the concrete on the support holding up the bridge (before we took off!). Three weeks later I went back with my Garmin. The mark was at 39', 12 miles from shore. Stuck under the bridge was an aggragate barge with its gravel load sheared down to deck level. We walked to a red brick house about 1/4 mile due south, only one wall was standing. There was a shelf on that wall, with cups and saucers still there, the rest of the house was gone, not a trace. On the other side of the wall, straw was impelled straight into the brick. I tried to pull a piece of straw out of the brick but it was solidly in place. Between that house and the next, a 54' foot Hatteras sat perfectly on its stern, straight up, blocking the sun. No birds, no bees, nothing moved. We contacted NOAA and told them we found what we believe to be the high water mark of Katrina on that overpass. To this day, heading west on I-10, when approaching the Canal Rd. overpass (just west of GulfPort), look high and to the right, just under the overpass bank support. It reads: August 2005: Katrina High Water Mark. Hence my name: TideFighter

I live on the gulf coast and have seen more than I want of canes. This storm is nothing for one reason. Its movement is way to fast to really do significant damage. Storm surge is always the issue but eventually the winds shift allowing the water to move out. Storms that are the issue is when they are slow. They just hammer and hammer you for 24 to 36 hours. Then as they continue to move slow dumping tons of rain and keeping the surge coming inland. Thats when they cause a lot of damage. Fast moving stroms is nothing but a little inconvenience but still can be dangerous. I do hope all of you in this area stay safe and be smart. Most importantly after any hurricane is to be very patient. It takes a little time for the normalcy to kick in but most of you have serious snow storms so you are prepared. Just hang in there, be safe and patient.

Yeah, I wouldn't be so sanguine ... NYC subterranean estate is slightly more expansive than most 'cane prone regions and have never been tested with 7 ft of seawater above flood stage ... regardless of how long it hangs around it's gonna get messy for an incredibly densely populated area

Its always messy after a cane. Just have to deal with it. When you choose like I have to live near a major body of water, you must know the issues that can arise. If you understand it then you can deal with it. The folks in the NY/Jersey area are tough cookies. They will be pissy as usual but can handle it. Life will be normal before the election that i promise. Obama will need all the help he can get.

Do you people get paid well to antagonize or are you just a trouble maker who taunts?

The global climate is changing.  That is pretty fucking clear.  It's possible heavily populated areas will become inhabitable and unfarm-able.  Now, you may think this is a natural course of events and maybe it is.  But if it is not, if it is our habits of opening up the sewage pipes and exhaust pipes and letting toxic waste and fumes smother the air in a million different regions in every country on earth, we should stop.

Stop?  Oh but why, you ask.  What's in it for us, you ask.  The energy CEOs and the manufacturers who save billions of dollars a year but allowing their waste to become our waste to walk, swim, drink and inhale would be faced with income adjustments that may render them a smaller yacht or a few less mansions.

But so fucking what.  In 300 years, the kids will know we did our best to keep them from dying of starvation, water wars and displacement with walls up during their attempt to find higher ground, fertile soil, climates that will not rip apart their homesteads a few times a year.

Fucking prick you are.  Asshole who has little to nothing to offer a message board on a night that is sending many into tears.  You fucking grow up in a ghetto and see how far you get, men like you become pimps.

The global climate is changing.

Yup. It always is. Changing. See, one time the Thames froze over. And on all the Earth there were around zero SUVs.

It's possible heavily populated areas will become inhabitable and unfarm-able.

Heavily populated areas are unfarmable due to…population density, roads, building, concrete…

But if it is not, if it is our habits of opening up the sewage pipes and exhaust pipes and letting toxic waste and fumes smother the air in a million different regions in every country on earth, we should stop.

We did stop! Here in America, anyways. But you know what? It’s SO much more profitable to export our factories overseas, where they can chain workers in the factory dorm, and shovel toxins into the rivers. Everybody wins!

Welcome to America!  What,  you’ve been asleep since 1980?

But so fucking what.  In 300 years, the kids will know we did our best to keep them from dying of starvation, water wars and displacement with walls up during their attempt to find higher ground, fertile soil, climates that will not rip apart their homesteads a few times a year.

300 years? Decisions are made to make the quarterly numbers make bank.  Anyone in the US.gov who tries to make any coherent plan for more than 2 years out is looked at like he’s NostraFUCKINGdomus.

Fucking prick you are.  Asshole who has little to nothing to offer a message board on a night that is sending many into tears.  You fucking grow up in a ghetto and see how far you get, men like you become pimps.

Tears of a clown.  I did grow up in a ghetto – it’s called the US of A. Luckily I was entirely too stupid to know how all the success and excess was a lie; livin’ large on Uncle Wao’s credit card.  And better to become a pimp than a whore, right?

Effect on Electrical Performance The ingress of water into the data cabling system can have a serious affect on its ability to support high bit rate data applications like Fast Ethernet and Gigabit Ethernet. In some cases, cables that are already near the link length limit (and therefore the attenuation budget) for the standard may fail after flooding. This is because when the cable gets wet, its dielectric performance is changed, which affects impedance and the related parameters of attenuation and return loss. HFT go boom-boom.
