Three Days Ahead Of Election, Candidates Tied Reuters Finds; Bill Maher Jokes
With only three days to the big unveiling, the candidates are essentially tied for the Presidential election. The Reuters/Ipsos daily tracking poll released this morning has (of likely voters) 47% backing Obama and 46% backing Romney. The two statistics fall within the realm of statistical noise implying there is no difference and that is why so much time is now being spent in the battleground states; especially since the same poll has Obama leading on electoral college votes and such a huge swathe of 'undecideds' who remain very balanced. The closeness of the race does raise the concern about Bush-Gore-like hanging-chad discord and as we have discussed in the past (the 70-percent, the 3.5 class society, and the Political Black Swan). The chances of social unrest at a close decision are non-negligible in the current environment and should not be dismissed; though we are not sure that Bill Maher's 'comedic' sentiment is really helping: "If you're thinking about voting for Mitt Romney, I would like to make this one plea: black people know who you are and they will come after you."

I've got no problem with Romney winning as I'll pay less taxes, but it seems to me he's going to lose. Nate Silver's analysis is a lot more rigorous that others' that I've seen, and he called 49/50 states and all 35 Senate races correctly in the 2008 election:

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the unemployment rate rose from 7.8% to 7.9% for October.
The number of unemployed in the US rose from 12,088,000 in September to 12,258,000 in October. An increase of 170,000. The good news is that non farm payrolls increased by +171,000! That is a nice jobs increase.
Bear in mind that these numbers are misleading because defense contractors announced layoffs but were asked by the Obama Administration to delay the layoffs until after the election. I guess we will have to see how many defense job cuts there were until after the election. So, last Friday’s jobs report is anyone’s guess (that is, it is pure mythology).
The number of people not in the labor force actually declined to 88,341,000 from 88,710,000 the previous month. That is good news as well.
And the duration of unemployment 27 weeks and over rose to 40.6%.
The employment to population ratio rose in October to 58.8, but still remains at a level near the beginning of the “Reagan Recovery.”
Since “recovery summer” of 2010, 262,000 more people have gone on disability than have dropped off unemployment. And 5.4 million more people are on food stamps (SNAP).

I find it interesting that most elections come out so close in the popular vote. There are of course, two possible explanations.
A. The general population is almost equally divided on their opinions and preferences for a candidate.
