Kerry, John Kerry: Defense Secretary

Tyler Durden's picture

Just when the newsflow surrounding America's military-industrial complex couldn't get any more surreal, and on Veterans day on top of everything, here comes the WaPo with news that virtually assures all defense companies should open limit up tomorrow: "President Obama is considering asking Sen. John F. Kerry (D-Mass.) to serve as his next defense secretary, part of an extensive rearrangement of his national security team that will include a permanent replacement for former CIA director David H. Petraeus." That's right: John "Swiftboat" Kerry, the same John Kerry who accused Vietnam vets of committing war crimes; the same John Kerry of the whole military service controversy.

More "Although Kerry is thought to covet the job of secretary of state, senior administration officials familiar with transition planning said that nomination will almost certainly go to Susan E. Rice, the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations." As to Petraeus, who may or may not testify over the Benghazi affair, but apparently is excused due to his familial infidelities, and whose sexual dalliances were (not) ironically captured best by The Onion, his replacement is also becoming clear: "John O. Brennan, Obama’s chief counterterrorism adviser, is a leading contender for the CIA job if he wants it, officials said. If Brennan goes ahead with his plan to leave government, Michael J. Morell, the agency’s acting director, is the prohibitive favorite to take over permanently. Officials cautioned that the White House discussions are still in the early phases and that no decisions have been made."

WaPo continues:

Rice, one of an inner circle of aides who have been with Obama since his first presidential campaign in 2007, is under particular fire over the Benghazi incident, in which the U.S. ambassador and three other Americans were killed.

Some Republican lawmakers have suggested that she was part of what they suspect was an initial, election-related attempt to portray the attack as a peaceful demonstration that turned violent, rather than what the administration now acknowledges was an organized terrorist assault.

Rice’s description, days after the attack, of a protest gone wrong was either intentionally misleading or incompetent, Sen. Lindsey O. Graham (R-S.C.) said Sunday. Rice, he said, “would have an incredibly difficult time” winning Senate confirmation as secretary of state.

But several White House officials said Obama is prepared to dig in his heels over her nomination to replace outgoing Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton.

Rice’s post-Benghazi remarks on several television news shows were merely a recitation of administration talking points drawn directly from intelligence available at the time, said the senior administration officials, who agreed to discuss the closely held transition planning only on the condition of anonymity.

While the "cons" of Kerry in charge of US defense are quite obvious to everyone, the "pros" is undeniable: Kerry will soon be given the chance to talk any and all US enemies, foreign and domestic, if not to death then certainly to near comatose state.

That's not true.  If we were back in the Good Olde W Days, we'd have more than enough crap to pile on there, just the same.

There do seem to be quite a few folks who are upset with Kerry's Winter Soldier experience. They mischaracterize his report from his fellow veterans as being accusations. Where's the interest in truth? Where's the support for our battle weary troops who only wanted to have their own stories told?

Look on the bright side all.  Kerry will gut the military, bring them home and they will be pissed.  He will cut out their benefits after being wounded in war.  On a positive note we could have a military take over of the government!   Obama is relieveing more generals and admirals that disagree with him daily. General Petrauas was not going to lie to congress so the hand was played.  Not sure how it will play out, my take is he will testify as a civilian. They are thinking about court martialing him and our politicians screw around on their spouses all the time, but that is ok for them.

Now for those that want to go down with the titanic this should be good news!

Petreaus already testified to congress that Benghazi was the result of a "flash mob" attack inspired by a Youtube video. If he says differently now then he'll set himself up for a perjury charge.

But his greatest quality in my opinion was he allowed women to be themselves to the point where Désirée was the talk of the town. Désirée...now thats worth a swig at the bubbly. In fact she became queen of Sweden as Desideria...smart cookie!

I hear the US CIA was capturing Libyans and running a secret torture prison to get confessions out of them. Some Libyans took offense and kicked some ass. Reverse the situation, what would Americans do if they knew Libyan secret police were holding Americans in a torture facility inside their own city? Oh, I forgot, we don't do hypotheticals!

The United States Department of War, also called the War Department (and occasionally War Office in the early years), was the United States Cabinet department originally responsible for the operation and maintenance of the United States Army. The War Department also bore responsibility for naval affairs until the establishment of the Navy Department in 1798 and for most land-based air forces until the creation of the Department of the Air Force in 1947. The Secretary of War headed the war department throughout its existence.

Wrong again, first off it was a CIA safe house nestled in a residential neighborhood. Second, in your words a "consulate", why were they holding prisoners in a publicly accessed building considered American soil?
If there were prisoners held there, they would have actually had guards watching them you would think. No armed Marines and no private outside security. MSM is controlled by threats of having their FCC licences pulled so they report what their told.

This constant mentioning of an US Benghazi consulate is driving me crazy. There is and there was no such thing! How the fuck do you attack something that isn't there?! I'll say it again, maybe it helps someone: a LOT of the news are just films, fakes, things that did not happened, at all, never! The reason they (insert your favorite theory about who "they" are) do this is to condition the people to do or accept something since we (as the sheeple but with a twist) have to accept what is/has to be done (tacit or explicitly). Everything is a contract and they have to get our consent (manufactured or genuine) - think free will. Do not consent to their offers aka playing / getting involved in their deceitful games of "news", "politics", 'entertainment", "music , "sport" etcetera.

The people of the north were mostly in sync with Lincoln's war on the South. There were draft riots and Lincoln had to suspend various civil rights but it was Northern soldiers voting in the field who re-elected Lincoln. It was the regional state governments which were not in sync with the Federal government. Completely different situation.

From that article:

Most of the petitions have a few thousand signatures; many signers appear to be from other states. Under the “We the People” program, launched last year, the White House will respond to any petition that receives 25,000 or more signatures within 30 days.

That's well short of the numbers you need in order to prosecute a war.

Estimates of total Confederate enlistments run from 600,000 to 1,400,000. Many Confederate scholars count 600,000 total individuals. After considering the numerous surveys made, perhaps 750,000 individuals would be reasonably close.

On top of all the commentary above, I'm worried about what this says: That he got worse grades than even George W. Bush at Yale, despite taking the same relatively easy track.  And how does a Yalie out of Andover end up not making it into a top-15 law school?  Does all this say that he's actually not that smart, quick, retentive of knowledge?  I also find the popular talk about 'republican money' a bit overdone: Every time I look behind a democrat comer, I see a gang of very rich democrats loading up the money bin.  We could do better on both sides of the aisle in recruiting candidates.  No?

The Winter Soldiers were honorably discharged veterans of the Vietnam War who asked Kerry to take their story to DC so that the politicians and the nation could see what national policy had actually produced. But you wouldn't want to hold the politicians' feet to the fire or support the troops or anything like that.

Statement of Mr. John Kerry

I would like to talk, representing all those veterans, and say that several months ago in Detroit, we had an investigation at which over 150 honorably discharged and many very highly decorated veterans testified to war crimes committed in Southeast Asia, not isolated incidents but crimes committed on a day-to-day basis with the full awareness of officers at all levels of command....

ok .... you buy the political motivation Kerry uses to 'challenge' the "power" back then.  You're entitled to your opinion, just as I and many others are as well ....  I am not taking down the Winter Soldiers, I am taking down Kerry.

Ask Lew Kuan Yew if Vietnam did anything positive ... in his estimation the entire Cold War bought time & woke up the entire Asian rim as to what they had to do.  How the 'war' was executed is another relevant question.   But then again , Kerry would never had a basis to bring attention to himself.  To Al Gore's eternal credit (I say this seriously), he never 'faked' what he was doing in Vietnam, if you examine Kerry closely, he was "punching his ticket' so he could claim 'combat' exposure so he could eventually run for political office.  If you do not see this by close examination of his service record than I assert you are not very discerning or are ideologically motivated to float Kerry's boat

Kerry may have carried the Winter Soldier banner to congress as an act of political positioning for future endeavors. But it is simply wrong to suggest that he accused others of war crimes when, in fact, he reported the stories of the veterans themselves to congress at their request.

That's all I'm saying.

I love to hear you proud americans bad mouth every oligarch who comes to carry the imperial sword in name of country.

Some of you are so head in the sand you couldn't tell an ostrich from its own egg; others so paranoid that you doubt if the blood that flows in your nation's veins is not urine.

As the TDs point out its the big picture that counts; aka US foreign and military policy : Quo Vadis.

The rest is internal political hubris and smoke and mirrors. The debt clock mounts for every hubristic act funded on Saud money.

"I am an island unto myself and the rest can go to hell", is no recipe for moving forward nor for collective healing.

Its humour noir of the most desperate kind and I prefer a more humble and truly critical, analytical approach that can talk about societal issues, not about chasing phantoms from an ugly past, or lionising criminals who iconise an imperial, predatory mindset of sons of Atreus.

The bottom line is that both blue and red administrations are hell bent on maintaining status quo even if it means maiming the people out there by the thousands, with collateral damage to the sword carriers of USA; the lost legions.

Anyways, so let the games continue...The day the US admin pulls out its troops from the ME will be a day to mark in stone, like in Vietnam.

Goodbye ZH's independence.

Frankly, from the outside of the US, John Kerry and John McCain seemed to be the two most decent presidential runners for 20 or 30 years. I guess the fact that they both were real vets (not like Bush) may be a reason for that.

The former lost because neo-cons threw heap of shit at him, whereas he was just saying exactly the same as those retired veteran some are so fan of, that is, that US war in Vietnam was justified by "other interests". The other lost because of all the hip around the "black" candidate and because of the shit hitting the US after 4 more years of Bush.

Funny how ZH's critical spirit can vanish when it comes to politics...

As a politician you should know, all politicians have many faces to their ambitions. Read some of my posts here.

Kerry was pro french I know, pro liberal and anti-war hero. But....he is also an oligarch sitting in this corrupt Congress today and the current scene is fraught with lies on the democratic front, especially in ME. Just as it is in France, on telling the public the real problems of private banking debt and the balance sheet of the ECB.

You know that. Lets see if our President talks about it on the TV today!

Honesty IS what honesty does!

But I agree the ZH focus is very biased...unfortunately, towards Libertarian views.

Maybe all the noise on Petreaus is to distract from that the core of our Republic is no longer. Dunno.

Defense Secretary Panetta tells Senator Sessions that military gets its authority from UN or NATO.

1.  There actually were war crimes committed in Vietnam, although not many soldiers were war criminals. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/My_Lai_Massacre

2.  Re: Kerry's "flip flops"  Kerry changed his opinions when new evidence was available, unlike "weathervane" Romney who changed his opinions when his audience changed.

3.  Re: Kerry's medals.  Any imputation of wrongdoing must rest with the military, not Kerry; it was the military who awarded the medals to Kerry, he didn't award them to himself.

One more step in America's demise folks.   Ok, two counting O's re-election.

America's demise is a mathematical certainty, sorta like Titanic with 5 compartments flooded.  Just a matter of time now.

You can bitch all you want about who's fault it is, but the ship is gonna sink.

Why did I give up on the "revolution" idea?   Because America isn't worth saving anymore.  O's re-election proved that beyond any doubt.

It's not just a hopelessly corrupt government.  It's a hopelessly selfish ignorant sheeple population too.
