What are you looking for and feel you need.Pistol, rifle, shotgun??Pistol, get a auto loader.Rifle(AK)Shotgun,Saiga 12.IMHO.
The choices are many. First thing you'll have to decide is what are you trying to defend: self, home, auto. My advice is: 1) to get with a certified instructor. 2) Don't buy anything until you understand the dirrenences between rifles, shotguns, and hand guns. 3) Don't buy anything until you have shot several. Many ranges have a variety of guns they will let you try before you buy. <imho>
This is good advice.
I'll get shit for this, but I like the idea of a nice, reliable .22LR. Ammo is cheap and you can carry a metric shitload of it if you have to. Good for hunting and defense if necessary. Granted one shot won't "put someone down" the same way a 30-06 will, but the recoil is minimal and you ought to be able to hit a man-size target from 150 yards with ease after only a few hours of practice. Even with iron sights a newbie can hit at 100 yards out; I've watched it happen over the course of 15 minutes.
And, in a SHTF scenario, a bullet wound is more likely than not to be a death sentence, regardless of caliber and placement. I seriously doubt any would-be attacker would pause, notice your "wimpy" .22 and say, "Why, that has almost no stopping power. Onward to glory!"
Chump, I love my .22 and do not underestimate it. However, I'd never want to rely on it as my only defensive firearm. This person says he can only afford one waepon, and therefore it cannot be a .22.
If he can add other guns later, a .22 is a MUST have.
Yeah if I were in his shoes I'd go with an SKS. My "end of the world" plans require me to get mobile, so I favor my .22 heavily since I can carry so much freaking ammo with it. Then again, I'll also have my pistol and a few hundred rounds, because you're right when you say a .22 shouldn't be your sole defensive weapon.
Either way, +1 for this guy making the purchase. Better late than never.
Bob - Picked up SW mp-22. Great little gun. 1k rounds (2 weeks old) -- Easier on
wallet than Bushmaster. Wish ZHer's could form ammo buying pool.
Boozer
I've seen a lot of 800lb steers put down for keeps with that round. Nobody walks away from an eye shot.
Exactly right.
AK-47 is $500 or less. More multi use than a shot gun. With a shot gun, if fail to hit your target after 5 shots, you are screwed. With an AK-47, you have 30 shots. Also with a shot gun, it is more difficult to shoot through cover. For example, with an AK-47 you can shoot someone hiding behing a car, with a shot gun, the steel will stop the shot.
Slugs, fletchets, buckshot, flash bang, and a multitude of other exotic ammunition choices make the 12 gauge quite an adaptable and formidable weapon. For close range self defense it is nearly impossible to beat by the average Joe Scumbag our inquirer is likely to face.
Not to mention body armor won't save an attacker from the intenal injuries they'll get from a high velocity slug.
You may have just opened the flood gates. +1 on the Mossberg 500 12 ga recommendation. Less than $300, good all-around gun. Also Remington 870 12 ga in the same price range.
Handgun: Glocks or Springfield XDs are easy to come by for under $500. Both good guns.
Rifle: AK-47-type is about all you're going to find for less than $500. Ar15s are ubiquitous. hedgeless_horseman swears by the 5.7 FN, but it's not as common.
You have many choices in that range. If I had to choose, I wouldn't go with a pistol first time 'round. You want something with significant firepower, something that will allow defense and provides stopping power a safe distance.
I'd suggest an AK Variant such as a Saiga 7.62 x 39mm, or a shotgun like a Remington 870, which is the gold standard for slide action 12 gauges in America. That statement is in context of what you have to spend. There are better shotguns than the 870, but not for the money. Mossberg is another terrific value in the space, but not as good as Remington.
Consider buying used on gunbroker.com. Many used guns are like brand new. You can save decent money going that way, just buy from a seller with a good track record. Just like on ebay.
Ideally you'll get a rifle AND a shotgun.... right tool for the job and all that.
Good luck.
Always consider used before new. Semi automatic handguns require 1000+ rounds to break them in and be considered reliable and with today's ammo prices, that can cost more as much as the gun.
However, always consider your local gun shop before buying online. The internet is fine for locating rare guns, but local shops let you get a better feel for the options and many will give you a 30 day warranty on your used gun.
This is all good advice, I'd only add that you are way ahead if you take an experienced shooter with you to the local gun show and buy a used gun in good shape from a private seller.
Great advantages in price and privacy.
Only one gun? No 'sperience? = 12 gauge pump.
Semi auto pistols can be dangerous for the newb.
Buy low-brass birdshot for home defense, 0-0 buck for stopping, er, armored miscreants.
NEVER use birdshot for home defense. Birdshot is for birds, that's all. Doing so in a self defense situation will likely get you killed. Birdshot does not penetrate tissue effectively to do damage, and won't even make it through a sheet metal front door. 00 buckshot, or slugs are for defense. In a self defense situation, it's about putting holes in the bad people/animals till they are damaged enough to no longer be a threat.
Sargeant- with family only a couple pieces of drywall away, I DO NOT recommend those highly penetrative loads for use in my own house.
A 12 gauge birdshot load, at less than 20 feet, makes a pattern about 2 or 3 inches in size, and will blow a window in some t shirt wearing burglar's chest.
So I must disagree.
An interesting article on shotgun rounds for personal defense:
http://www.firearmstactical.com/briefs10.htm
In interest of you and your loved ones, please read these:
http://www.theboxotruth.com/docs/bot3_2.htm
http://www.activeresponsetraining.net/bird-shot-for-self-defense
We have done tests with various birdshot loads. Birdshot penetrated through two pieces of drywall (representing one wall) and was stopped in the paper on the front of the second wall. The problem with birdshot is that it does not penetrate enough to be effective as a defense round. Birdshot is designed to bring down little birds.
A policeman told of seeing a guy shot at close range with a load of 12 gauge birdshot, and was not even knocked down. He was still walking around when the EMTs got there. It was an ugly, shallow wound, but did not STOP the guy. And that is what we want... to STOP the bad guy from whatever he is doing. To do this, you must have a load that will reach the vitals of the bad guy. Birdshot will not do this
In fact, tests have shown that even #4 Buckshot lacks the necessary penetration to reach the vital organs. Only 0 Buck, 00 Buck, and 000 Buck penetrate enough to reach the vital organs.
Unless you expect to be attacked by little birds, do not use birdshot. Use 00 Buck. It will do the job.
But doesn't 00 Buck penetrate too much in interior walls to be a "safe" load in a home?
Yes, it does penetrate a lot. But any load that is going to be effective will need to penetrate walls to have enough power to penetrate bad guys. If our only concern was to be sure we didn't penetrate walls, we would use BB guns. However, BB guns will not stop bad guys.
Therefore, we must use loads that will STOP bad guys, and this means that they will also penetrate walls. So, be sure you hit the bad guy and do not shoot into walls where loved ones are on the other side.
When To Use Birdshot
A friend of AR15.com sends this:
"I saw a gunshot victim, about 5' 10" and 200 lbs, taken to the operating room with a shotgun wound to the chest. He was shot at a range of six feet at a distance of just over the pectoralis muscle. He was sitting on his front porch and walked to the ambulance. We explored the chest after x-rays were taken. The ER doc had said 'buckshot' wound, but this was obviously not accurate.
It was # 6 shot. There was a crater in the skin over an inch in diameter. When the shot hit the level of the ribs, it spread out about five inches. There was ONE pellet that had passed between the ribs and entered the pericardium, but not damaged the heart at all. As you say, 'use birdshot for little birds.'"
A one shot kill isn't what I'm after. I'm after a reasonably safe, effective prowler load.
That's why I don't recommend single shot shotguns, because anything worth shooting is worth shooting twice.
And the grand kids are still safe.
A one shot kill isn't what I'm after. I'm after a reasonably safe, effective prowler load.
No, you never want a one shot KILL load(ADMIT IT),(and you do not want a REASONABLY SAFE load, that is not he purpose for even owning a weapon for self defense), and if you ever have the misfortune of shooting someone, you ALWAYS state you were shooting to "STOP THE THREAT".
( Never say you were trying/shooting to KILL,EVER).
And that is ALL you say to the LE when they show up, LAWYER UP ASAP.
And you NEVER shoot to wound,if it's worth shooting at all, you shoot to "STOP THE THREAT".
Otherwise you will be 9 of 10 times supporting an injured felon for life, who was breaking and entering into your home/business, and with intent to do harm/murder,rob,steal or all the above, to you & yours.
Anytime anyone enters a dwelling, or business after KNOWING its occupied, has BAD intent.
You will 99% of the time be not guilty in Criminal court(unless no billed by a GJ), but rest assured, you WILL be back in court 60-80% of the time for a civil case.
(IF no Billed,criminally).
An Afghan vet I met recommended staggering the loads. 00 for breaching, then birdshot for shredding.
I go with alternating 00 buck and slugs. Tough combo, I'll blow you right out the door.
It depends... What is your intended use case? If you're just trying to defend your house, a 12 gauge pump Remington is always a good choice (with bandoleer sling, light, and clip to hold extra rounds on the shotgun) inexpensive too! If you want something that you can carry in your car, in your house, or on your person around in "normal" society, perhaps a 9mm pistol is best (Glock, springfield XD, are good starters). If you expect widespread rioting and unpleasantness, an AR15 with some sort of modern optics and a light would be ideal (eotech, or ACOG), plus plenty of normal capacity magazines (30 rd). If you were ever in a gunfight, you'd want to fight with your pistol to get to a rifle. You choose the right tool for the job.
However, you must practice! That doesn't mean standing on a square /indoor range punching holes at uniform stationary illuminated targets, far away from things or people you'd prefer not to destroy. You need to get dirty, run, roll, get your heartrate up and acquire targets that aren't necessarily right in front of you. If you don't have a place to do that, you can always do it with snap caps and dry fire in your basement or something.
It's a tool, that's all. Don't get too caught up in the fancyness and gizmos. Training makes up for equipment in spades.
+10,000 for "normal capacity magazines"
Look you have a lot of options to choose from, But the first thing you have to ask yourself is what is it used for. If it's for home defense you don't want a rifle or a handgun, especially if you don't have time for practice. A 12 guage shotgun is pretty much point and shoot and you don't have to worry as much about shooting through walls like you would a rifle or pistol. My reccomendation would be a Remmington 870. It's a reliable gun and easy to use. That is where I would start until I had more experience with guns. Forget the AR or the AK for now (one caveat here. If you think you might want one for the future pay special attention to legislation. You never know where that is headed).
One more thing to remember..you will lose about 50% of your skills in a life threatening situation so become familiar with whatever wepon you choose and practice.
If you know how to wheel and deal, and have a little patience, one can still pick up an SKS and 1000 rds for about $500. Reliable, accurate, easy to shoot, and easy to maintain.
You can get a brand new Ruger P-95 at retail in my small town for $319 + tax, $350. If you keep your eyes open, you can still score 9mm ammo for $10/50.
A Mossberg 500 is still running around $300. A Ruger 10/22 is around $230, 25rd. mags for one are less than $20, and .22lr ammo is still only about $20/500 at retail.
Plenty of options in your price range.
#1: 22LR pistol
#2: Mossberg 500 or Remington 870
#3: 22LR rifle
#4: 5- or 6- shot revolver
#5: Mini-14 or AR-15
I need to get my first weapon. Any suggestions on brand and type? Looking to spend $250-500.
Buy nothing under $250.00 (unless it's a .22LR/ or inexpensive Shotgun).
And b4 buying ANYTHING get some training............................PARAMOUNT.
Buy an AR-15 complete lower receiver. This is the actual firearm part. Then you save up to buy an upper assembly.
That way you can also use the same receiver to have multi calber options. Upper assemblies also do not require 4473 forms.
YMMV
$500= Glock 22 gen 3 gen 4 in .40 cal then a Remington 870 12 ga. pump.
I bought a Ruger LCR .357, but I was planning to anyway. Repugnican, Democrap it doesn't matter we are going down the $hitter either way.
@ hedgelessWhoresMan,
I would have gone with a S&W 686 or the ever reliable 1911 .45acp. Ruger is owned by Globalist George Sorros.
So I actually have something in common with Soros!

I would have to think ear protection manufacturers are running a close second, behind guns and ammo.
Don't go deaf on the practice range...
Don't have to listen to the looter you just shot bleed to death...
Don't have to listen to blathering TOTUS every other day for 4 more years...
Statistics show that you are much more likely to shoot a friend, child or family member than a fellow gun nut like the looter in question. The gun nut redneck crowd are simply self - imprisoning, saving the taxpayer the cost of incarceration. Keep it up .. stay home in your fortified double wide and keep an eye on the neighbors.
Wow. You are truly stupid.

And what do statistics say about the US unemployment rate or inflation?
Statistics show that you are much more likely to shoot off your mouth in total ignorance about guns than to live in a fortified double wide.
No - you're thinking of the NYPD, who can shoot 11 innocent bystanders without even hitting the person they are shooting at.
Here now. Lets be fair. If you are referring to the shooting in front of the Empire State building there were 16 shots fired, all by the police, and they managed to hit their target 10 times from point blank range. Sure, they managed to hit 9 innocent bystanders in the process but what can you do. It reminds me of the Dirty Harry parody on SCTV years ago. "I would shoot 100 innocent bystanders if it got scum like that off the street".
Seriously, the video of that incident shows how poorly some of the police are trained to handle that type of situation. I do not bemoan their use of deadly force in this situation since the guy pulled a 45 out and pointed it at them, but, the little fat cop looks to be backing up and just firing wildly in the direction of the gunman on a crowded New York street.
Interesting how we think we're "free" because we still have rights to bear arms. Problem is we have guns, the government has everything else. What we own is like bringing a knife to a gun fight.
Possession is 9/10 of the law.
Still applies after the bullets start flying.
Just ask the Libyans, Syrians, or Mexicans-
In a technologically-advanced society, don't be so sure we won't have our government use all kinds of weapons.....fear of climate change, terrorism, yada yada yada.
\
Seems to be effective in Afghanistan.
No, what we own is like bringing hundreds of millions of guns and over a trillion rounds of ammunition to a gun fight.
The military has been watching our government's actions. They know what the score is. If you think the rank and file is going to fire on their neighbors and families then I'm sad to see such cynicism. High command may be filled with ass-kissing yes men, but that doesn't mean a thing when the shit hits the fan.
Agreed... watching, taking notes, and remembering. Let's not forget the number of veterans who know the score dwarfs the number of active duty personnel.
On that note, keep an eye on Barky replacing Flag Officers. Communist cleansing of the military? I don't know but well worth watching.
Night of the Long Knives comes to mind.
Look at all the looting after hurricane Sandy. I bet a lot of those people wished they'd had some firearm protection. Got Guns???
And what are all of you gun fetishists going to do when the ATF comes beating at your door? Lock and load your LPC's (little penis compensators) and get into a shootout? Please. Most of you couldn't survive 48 hours without a wireless signal.
Douche bag Alert
Helvetico"What Guns".
What are you going to do? Grovel and beg for an easy ride to your local FEMA camp?
He will be one of the first people begging at your dooor step to let him in.
and then turn you in for having food/guns/members of persecuted group (x) at your house.
FEMA camps? Off your antipsychotic meds again? Why is this website such a magnet for the unhinged?
You worship at the altar of the State, gobble the goo of Federal LEOs, and think that the ATF has a right to kick in the door of any American at any time, yet you say that I'm unhinged? Hmmm.....
BTW, you didn't answer the question.
I don't live in the US, so I'm not concerned about the ATF. Tell me more about these FEMA camp revelations...do they come to you in dreams, or is it the voices in your head that reveal this top secret info to you?
It will never happen. Many ATF people are pretty pro gun, same with FBI, et al. You think people who read ZH are the only ones aware of the problems the US faces? On top of that, nobody is going to risk their life for some tyrannical sick dream by a know-nothing bureaucrat drunk on power. Barring that, people could just bury them in the woods.
Mrs. Gooch and I just went for a tac pistol training session held by 2 life-long Marine corps. One is still DoD security detail and the other an international L.E.O. trainer. We were early and discussed current affairs (without too much detail) and I was relieved to hear they share alot of our sentiment. Damn good class too.
If you don't know, spend the dough and get training.
Sorry to break it to ya', bud, but Federal LEOs are criminal scum for the most part. The fact that they are employed by unconstitutional agencies, and enforce "regulations" that they make up themselves (as opposed to laws passed by our criminal Congress) tells me all I need to know about them. They go around looking for patsies who are harming no one, and pinning 'violations' on them in order to keep a steady stream of fodder passing through the corporate prisons.
"most part".
I wasn't preaching the merits of the police-state apparatus. Just credentials.
I believe these guys to be an exception to that rule because of the dialogue.
They were also no fucking joke, bud.
I believe ya' that they're dangerous and plenty badass.
I also believe that they won't disobey any order that they are given, up to and including coming to YOUR door, shooting your dog, pointing a machine gun in your, your kids', your wife's faces, trashing your home, kicking your ass, taking your shit, and finding a charge to imprison you on. They are criminal scum of the same order as the Gestapo, NKVD, KGB, Stasi, etc.
When the browncoats come to my door, I'm going to take out at least 3 of them. They may get me in the end, but that's my contribution. They'll damn sure run out of browncoats willing to go door-to-door before they run out of us armed rednecks, and the word will get out.
That would be an honorable contribution... just watch the movie "Red State" to see the kind of heavy, unusustainable losses the brownshirts would take against millions of pissed off, armed Americans. Granted the "good guys" in the movie are murderours religious nuts, but you'll get the idea.
Granted the "good guys" in the movie are murderours religious nuts, but you'll get the idea.
That WAS the ONLY reason the POS movie was made, it was a DISINFORMATION MARXIST HIT JOB.
Ummm... Red State didn't exactly cast the ATF in the best light.
Is the ATF the only thing you can think of to worry about? If there is a situation where the economy has completely broken down you may have to worry about other citizens who were not aware are prepared. Then you have to protect yourselves against people who have been taking their whole life through the government and won't be bothered to cut out the government middleman and come after you directly.
No no, you have it all wrong. They won't send anyone; they'll send a drone, to take you and your house out.
What are you going to do when this or some future administration determines that you are a useless eater and makes your possession of food illegal. That sometimes happens in a socialist paradise. Ask the Kulaks how that worked out?

I like a can of WD-40 (with red straw attached) and a lighter for up close work.
Can of "Yard Spray Raid" shoots out to fifteen feet.
Dispersion at fifteen feet is an eight foot wide cone of fire.
A Super Soaker filled with gasoline works nicely too.
Super Toaster
Not for long. The gas eats up the seals.
Real flamethrowers aren't terribly complicated to build. Air tank, fuel tank, a couple of check-valves, some hoses, a main valve and a pilot light.
Just like last time.
All I know is I'm sold my home in So Cal and have my escape path to Texas is to be completed by Christmas. I will be living in the country and have already scoped out some local gun stores cause I will be able to buy more than a few new additions that I could only dream about while living in this CA. This is Christmas present to my self and family this year. WOOT!!!
Congratulations, you're getting out at the right time, my friend. CA will become a war zone.
and they say Americans are stupid....
Personal firearms are a rather barbarous relic. Now if you'll excuse me, I have to go sign in a visitor at the armed guard's post in the lobby.
The common calibers fly off the shelves at WalMart in a matter of hours. I may start camping out like it Black Friday. Seriously though, I've never seen the shelves this bare.
Ammo stock was depleted last week at Walmart. They did have 22lr I was looking for but
not much of anything else.
Screw Walmart, they're always out of ammo. Since the election, them shelves promise to be lightly stocked for a while, at least around here.
Find a few bricks here and swing away.

Best thing that happened to us here in CT is Cabelas.
With all of this great advice floating around now seems like a good opportunity to poll the experts for the best rifle for a woman. I already have the Mossberg pump and Glock 9mm and hubby has a 22 250 but I'm looking for something in the 30 30 or 30 .06 family. Possibly a .270? I'm medium build and strong but recoil's always a bitch. Thanks in advance.
I would stay away from .270 if you are going to load up on the ammo as you don't really get any bulk discounts like you can find for .308 and 30-06, well unless you reload. I have a M1A Scout Squad and my niece had lots of fun shooting it and did not complain about the recoil, plus it is a true battle rifle and very accurate right out of the box.
A .30-30 is a good gun out to about 140 yards, after that it drops pretty fast. I hunted jack rabbits with one for years. The ammo isn't available as surplus. A .30-06 is a great rifle but the ammo isn't really available as surplus anymore either so most folks go for the .308 now. The .308 is a serious rifle and probably the best choice if a .223 doesn't have the ooomph you're looking for. The .308 does kick some.
If you are looking for a long range, easy kicking sporter, my old favorite is the .243, but again, the ammo is expensive. The .270 is even better, but still requires the expensive ammo.
I would recommend something like an SKS, soft recoil, good to about 150 yards, semi auto and magazine fed, plus the guns can be had really cheap. Go with the ones made in Russia or anywhere but China. The Norinco rifle we bought on a whim broke its bolt stop doodad after just a couple hundred rounds. Other guys had the same sort of trouble with them.
The old Russian SKS is still running fine. For the money, they are hard to beat. Ammo is dirt cheap.

What are your intended uses for the long gun? Plinkin targets, zombie destruction, hunting deer, elk, wild boar, bear, downing drones, exterminating rabid squirrels and rabbits, fowl, coyotes, wolves, etc...
30-30 ammo is kinda spendy. I just got 400 rounds for a tad over $300 w/shipping. That is about $0.71 a round but I love my lever action and it brings down deer quite quickly. I use my .308 for Elk and Bear. .308 recoil is substantial but the girlfreind shoots it at the range without complaint, most of the time. She's petite as in 117lbs and 5'4-1/2"
30-30 recoil not quite as bad as .308 but much more than the Mini 14 or AR 15.
Ak47/74 shot them, they are Ok, not too impressed, never owned one as my gun safe only holds 8 rifles and I've got an eye on a semi auto .308 to fill it up.
Mosun-Nagent is a decent cheap bolt gun. Shoots cheap ammo but some worry about a gas problem. I've shot them and they shoot fine but never owned one. Many here could say more about those but for less that $120.
Girlfriend's weapon is a Mini-14. Shoots a cheap 5.56 round (.223), takes hi capacity mags (bought her the 90 rnd circular mag for xmas for some serious zombie elimination) She thinks the recoil is just right, she takes deer with it no problem and feeds cheap russion ammo well. Magazines are a tad more than AR mags (they are not the same mag sizes) I think the last set of mags were $20 or $23 each for 30 rnd.
Good stuff!
The Mosin Nagant carbine I sold off was probably the loudest, most headache inducing rifle I ever shot.
After 20 rounds I had a real head splitter every time. The bolt would tend to stick closed once in a while to the point I carried a wooden dowel to beat it open with. I lost any interest in them over that.
Thanks to all for your response. I'm just gunning for some deer, coyotes, boars and the occasional zombie. You guys are making it harder - now I will really have to do some comparison shopping. Nice suprise though - digging through the old duffel bag and there with the kiddies' old .410 was a Remington 870. Christmas came early!
If the wife you are having is wanting the gun to be making you not be treating her badly any gun she is having will be a gun that is working for her.
Ha! Dat is right
Big Reno Gun show this weekend. Plan to stop by after work Friday and top of my stock of .308 and 5.56. Gun Shows have been on the Democrats "To be Banned" list for many years and with a lame duck Pres who knows this could be the last one.
Keep buying ammo every chance you get.
Don't throw the old stuff out. It has a real long shelf life.
