With Over 100,000 Supporting Texas Secession, Ron Paul Weighs In

Tyler Durden's picture

With just 5 days needed for the Texas secession petition to surpass 100,000 signatories, all is not well with the Union...

... actually, not only are things not well with the Union, things are getting worse by the minute, as American society splinters into diametrical opposites to a degree not seen in decades, a process which in itself virtually assures there will be no cliff compromise before the opportunity cost of ending the stand off becomes far too great. And with the option of the Mr. Chairman "getting to work" to fix things, one wonders - is even the market a motivating enough factor given a 20, 30 or even 50% drop in the rearview mirror: after all as the Fed has demonstrated, there is no need for a fiscal compromise to get the S&P to just shy of all time highs. Certainly, even America's politicians are very much aware of this by now (of course, this assumes that Bernanke is still in charge of the market: something we have claimed for two months is very much in question).

Regardless, with the topic of secession on everybody's lips, here is what none other than Ron Paul has said about this suddenly very volatile issue.

Ron Paul: Secession Is an American Principle

Ron Paul: This weekend I got a couple of calls from the media asking me questions about Rick Perry, our governor here in Texas and the statements he made about possible secession. Now, he didn’t call for secession, but he was restating a principle that was long held and at least in the original time of our country, and that is that there was a right to secession.

Actually, after the Civil War, nobody believes there is a so-called right to secession, but it is a very legitimate issue to debate because all of the states that came into the Union before the Civil War believed they have a right to secede and New England in the early part of the 19th century actually considered it, and nobody questioned them about whether they had the right to do it or not.

Since the Civil War, it’s been sort of a dead issue, but he brought it up. It stirred the media and believe me, it really stirred some of the liberal media where they started really screaming about what is going on here. “This is un-American”, I heard one individual say, “This is treasonous to even talk about it.”

Well, they don’t know their history very well because if they think about it, it’s an American tradition. It’s very American to talk about secession. That’s how we came into being. Thirteen colonies seceded from the British and established a new country, so secession is very much an American principle.

What about all the strong endorsements we have given over the past decade or two of those republics that seceded from the Soviet system? We were delighted with this. We never said, “Oh no. Secession is treasonous”.

No. Secession is a good principle. Just think of the benefits that would have come over these last 230-some years if the principle of secession had existed. That means the federal government would always have been restrained, not to overburden the states with too much federalism, too many federal rules and regulations.

But since that was all wiped out with the Civil War, the federal government has grown by leaps and bounds and we have suffered the consequences, and we need to reconsider this. It’s not un-American to think about the possibility of secession. This is something that’s voluntary. We came together voluntarily. A free society means you can dissolve it voluntarily. That was the whole issue was about.

Just remember one of the reasons that Wilson drove us in unnecessarily into World War I. He talked about what we have to give, have every country in the world the benefit of self-determination, a good principle. Of course, I don’t think he really believed that. But self-determination is a good principle. It’s a very American principle, so to me it’s a shame that we can’t discuss this.

You know, it’s interesting that so many of us have been taught for so many years, and as long as I can remember from the first grade on up taking the pledge of allegiance that we have a republic that’s “indivisible” and we have been preached that and preached it. So therefore, there is no contest, no question since the Civil War that we have even the thought that this could happen.

But you know what a lot of people don’t talk about and they really don’t even know about is who wrote the pledge to the flag. The pledge to the flag came from, for instance, Bellamy, an avowed Socialist who wanted to put into concrete in the pledge this principle of being indivisible, and he did it, you know, for the celebration ironically 400 years of the celebration of the landing of Christopher Columbus, so it was in 1892.

I mean, the pledge of allegiance has not been here, you know, all our history. So I think it’s worth of discussion. I think people should discuss this because right now, the American people are sick and tired of it all and I think the time will come when people will consider it much more seriously is when the federal government can no longer deliver. That time will come when the dollar collapses.

No matter what they do and how many promises they have and how many bailouts they have, they can’t do it if the money doesn’t work. So then, the independence of the states will come back and it doesn’t mean that you’ll be un-American to even contemplate what might have to be done once the dollar crashes.

While this video was originally recorded on 4/19/2009, Ron Paul spokeswoman Rachel Mills confirmed earlier today (11/13/2012) that Ron Paul “feels the same now” about secession as he did in this video.

Not likely. Throughout history Texans have volunteered more for U.S. military service than any other state. And we have the largest population of veterans. We also lead in private gun ownership. 2+2 still equals 4.

Conquer Texas? Better be prepared to nuke us.

http://www.wwaytv3.com/2012/11/13/secession-petitions-gather-support-nc-...

UNCW sociology professor Dr. Mike Adams says the movement may be a glimpse of what is to come.

"I don't think that this particular petition drive is going to result in anything," Adams said. "When people ask if I take this petition seriously, no I don't. It's a foretelling, though, of things that might be taking place later on."

Adams says when the south seceded from the union more than 150 years ago, it took a while for traction to build.

I am from the north but still find the American love story re: Honest Abe to be absurd.  First, he was a racist.  He is well known to refer to African American slaves as "The Smartest of the Barnyard Animals."  I am sorry to say that, and it disgusts me, but Lincoln said it - and meant it.  Lincoln actually supported slavery and believed that slave holders had a constituional right to their 'property'.  Meanwhile, the rest of the now 'civilized world', as DiLorenzo rightly points out, seemed to be able to end slavery without destryoying 1/2 their nation and keep them at a lower standard of living to this day.

Imagine Greece, today, saying they wanted to succeed from the European Union and having the President of the E.U. say, "Nuke Them."  That was the equivalent of the March to the Sea.  It was an awful, disgrace from a presidents who had only one goal which was to consolidate as much power as possible in the Federal Government.

Read "The Real Lincoln" by Thomas DiLorenzo and find out what Lincoln was all about.  Or, you can find out about him getting shot in the theater ghost-written by Bill O'Reilly, but do you really think he spent a moment on that?  15,000 books have been written on Lincoln.

I'll tell you one thing - Lincoln and Obama have a few things in common.  1)  Neither has tried to help the African American community in any way.  2)  Both have pissed off enough people to make them want to leave the union.  3)  Can't mention 3rd.

The Civil War resulted in the death of over 600,000 Americans (out of population of 30,000,000).  So, it killed 2% of our entire population.  That would be like a war today killing 6,000,000 Americans.  Let's hope our dear leader can make some intelligent decisions before anything like this can happen. We don't need more wars.

BTW - Obama's on his way to Russia.  I guess it's his time to make good on his promise.  We'll see what that might have been.  This man needs to be impeached before his 2nd term.  I wonder how badly Texas would want out if Obama was gone?

The Roswell Women & Children, one instance...we will never forget...

"You all have probably heard of the Trail of Tears, when the Cherokee Indians were sent from North Carolina and Georgia to Oklahoma by force in the 1800's.

You may also know, especially if you are from the South, of the great devastation and death caused by the Civil War, and how people's homes were burned or they were forced out of them so that they could be occupied by the Union army.

But very few people know the story of another forced exile and a different kind of devastation caused by the Civil War in Roswell, Georgia and the former town of New Manchester.

In 1864, at least 400 and possibly as many as 700 mill workers, nearly all women, black and white and their children, were arrested as traitors and shipped North by force, and very few of them ever made their way back home. Those husbands and sons who made it through the war returned home to Roswell to find their families gone, and no way of knowing where."

Ron Paul, president of the Texan republic please. If that happens, I move there.

Secession might actually make America stronger in the long run by making each state responsible for its own successes or failures. People on a state level will therefore be much more careful about their electoral choices and politicians will be much more accountable.

All that will be needed to be in common is a reasonably sized army.

Two things -

First off if the president was "empowered" to strip citizenship in this manner it becomes very easy to remove constitutional rights.

E.G. declare person x a non-citizen

Invade their home etc without any worry of probable cause.

Detain without charges and trial indefinitely.....

Second, some of these people might actually WANT to be stripped of citizenship as it is getter harder and harder to voluntarily renounce.

This could be a "fast track" to expatriating!

FDR did the same thing.  Rather than spend relief money in the poor south where black sharecroppers were literally dying, FDR chanelled most of that New Deal money to the mid west to capture Republican votes.

So the whole, Texas should be thankful thing kind of falls apart doesn't it?  This is a ruthless knife fight over the corpse of America, there ain't gonna be any winners.

Secession - Right idea, wrong scale.  Vote with your feet IF you feel you can get a better deal personally somewhere else.  Ultimately, land is just a property asset that can be rented, bought or sold.  As a human being you have the right under Natural Law to relocate to where your Liberty and Industry is best respected.

Look, if the elites that own government in a particular locale are getting too arrogant for your taste, pack your bags and move.  E.g. Detroit, California, Queens, etc. Quit your whining and do your homework.

2012 Index of Economic Freedom - http://www.heritage.org/index/ranking

You have Canada just to the north ranked 6th and Chile ranked 7th at the other end of this hemisphere.

Instead of focusing on what is not achievable and potentially very bloody in terms of outcome such as secession, do what is achievable for the most people - advocate that the productive and producers move to create new opportunities for wealth creation that will not be subject to the confiscation by moochers.

Sooner or later the competition to attract the productive will lead to a new paradigm among the nations of the world to lower the legislative bar on meddling in the daily life of the productive.

"Look, if the elites that own government in a particular locale are getting too arrogant for your taste..."

Yeah, that used to work.  However when the mafia owns the government of the nation merely moving within the nation solves nothing.  You're still dealing with the Mafia.  I don't do crime, I don't cheat, I don't lie (I tell 'stories'), and I have, and am, worked(ing) my ass off in the higher lower middle class.

No matter what there is going to be a great deal of blood spilled within the next couple of years.  It is already a certainty due to the actions of both the FED and the Federal Government.  Once the dollar collapses, and welfare/social security/SSI/EBT money stops...that will be the true zombie apocalpse that has become a recent meme.

Our cities are filled with people that have no self-respect and, as a result, absolutely NO respect for anyone else or their property.  As far as they are concerned my groceries were bought for their consumption because I owed it to them.  That's whites, blacks, latino, asian.....all with the common denominator of arrogant ignorance.

We'll either face that hoard one at a time, alone or with a limited pool of neighbors, or we snatch the dressing off all at once to let the pus and slime flow until clean blood appears.

I've always preferred snatch.

You already said it, no water no state.

Everybody should read The Worst Hard Times for an understanding of what is about to hit.  It's about the dust bowl that virtually erased a large part of the mid west.  That damage is still there, lying inches below a well irrigated surface, and the aquifer that underlies the region is about to fail.  Read the book.

remember T. Boone Pickens & the Ogallala Aquifer?

Judging from speakers at Friday’s meeting of the Texas Lyceum, one can’t talk about water without talking about money.

“Growth will follow the water,” said local attorney Marty Jones, who has handled legal matters concerning water for people such as oil tycoon T. Boone Pickens.

[...]Pickens sold the Canadian River Municipal Water Authority more than 200,000 acres of water rights last year after 12 years of failed efforts to make a deal for the water downstate.

Wouldn't it make more sense to fix the country than secede from the nation? Yeah, I know it sounds cool - "in yo' face Washington", but think before you act. Let us for a moment presume that Obama and Rick Perry sign some kind of emancipation document and Texas is set free. Then what? Oh, you want to bring oil from Canada to crack? Sorry, no pipeline unless we get 90%. Don't like that? OK, you figure out how to get oil from Alberta to Houston economically. Don't like China stealing your jobs. Fine, they'll just move to Mexico. Oh, and Venezuela's army is likely larger than your National Guard, so you would need to beef up your defense spending.

Yes, there's a lot wrong with the USA, but really, you cannot simply pick up your marbles and go home. There would be war.
