With Over 100,000 Supporting Texas Secession, Ron Paul Weighs In

Tyler Durden's picture

With just 5 days needed for the Texas secession petition to surpass 100,000 signatories, all is not well with the Union...

... actually, not only are things not well with the Union, things are getting worse by the minute, as American society splinters into diametrical opposites to a degree not seen in decades, a process which in itself virtually assures there will be no cliff compromise before the opportunity cost of ending the stand off becomes far too great. And with the option of the Mr. Chairman "getting to work" to fix things, one wonders - is even the market a motivating enough factor given a 20, 30 or even 50% drop in the rearview mirror: after all as the Fed has demonstrated, there is no need for a fiscal compromise to get the S&P to just shy of all time highs. Certainly, even America's politicians are very much aware of this by now (of course, this assumes that Bernanke is still in charge of the market: something we have claimed for two months is very much in question).

Regardless, with the topic of secession on everybody's lips, here is what none other than Ron Paul has said about this suddenly very volatile issue.

Ron Paul: Secession Is an American Principle

Ron Paul: This weekend I got a couple of calls from the media asking me questions about Rick Perry, our governor here in Texas and the statements he made about possible secession. Now, he didn’t call for secession, but he was restating a principle that was long held and at least in the original time of our country, and that is that there was a right to secession.

Actually, after the Civil War, nobody believes there is a so-called right to secession, but it is a very legitimate issue to debate because all of the states that came into the Union before the Civil War believed they have a right to secede and New England in the early part of the 19th century actually considered it, and nobody questioned them about whether they had the right to do it or not.

Since the Civil War, it’s been sort of a dead issue, but he brought it up. It stirred the media and believe me, it really stirred some of the liberal media where they started really screaming about what is going on here. “This is un-American”, I heard one individual say, “This is treasonous to even talk about it.”

Well, they don’t know their history very well because if they think about it, it’s an American tradition. It’s very American to talk about secession. That’s how we came into being. Thirteen colonies seceded from the British and established a new country, so secession is very much an American principle.

What about all the strong endorsements we have given over the past decade or two of those republics that seceded from the Soviet system? We were delighted with this. We never said, “Oh no. Secession is treasonous”.

No. Secession is a good principle. Just think of the benefits that would have come over these last 230-some years if the principle of secession had existed. That means the federal government would always have been restrained, not to overburden the states with too much federalism, too many federal rules and regulations.

But since that was all wiped out with the Civil War, the federal government has grown by leaps and bounds and we have suffered the consequences, and we need to reconsider this. It’s not un-American to think about the possibility of secession. This is something that’s voluntary. We came together voluntarily. A free society means you can dissolve it voluntarily. That was the whole issue was about.

Just remember one of the reasons that Wilson drove us in unnecessarily into World War I. He talked about what we have to give, have every country in the world the benefit of self-determination, a good principle. Of course, I don’t think he really believed that. But self-determination is a good principle. It’s a very American principle, so to me it’s a shame that we can’t discuss this.

You know, it’s interesting that so many of us have been taught for so many years, and as long as I can remember from the first grade on up taking the pledge of allegiance that we have a republic that’s “indivisible” and we have been preached that and preached it. So therefore, there is no contest, no question since the Civil War that we have even the thought that this could happen.

But you know what a lot of people don’t talk about and they really don’t even know about is who wrote the pledge to the flag. The pledge to the flag came from, for instance, Bellamy, an avowed Socialist who wanted to put into concrete in the pledge this principle of being indivisible, and he did it, you know, for the celebration ironically 400 years of the celebration of the landing of Christopher Columbus, so it was in 1892.

I mean, the pledge of allegiance has not been here, you know, all our history. So I think it’s worth of discussion. I think people should discuss this because right now, the American people are sick and tired of it all and I think the time will come when people will consider it much more seriously is when the federal government can no longer deliver. That time will come when the dollar collapses.

No matter what they do and how many promises they have and how many bailouts they have, they can’t do it if the money doesn’t work. So then, the independence of the states will come back and it doesn’t mean that you’ll be un-American to even contemplate what might have to be done once the dollar crashes.

While this video was originally recorded on 4/19/2009, Ron Paul spokeswoman Rachel Mills confirmed earlier today (11/13/2012) that Ron Paul “feels the same now” about secession as he did in this video.

Don't miss Texas too much.  You can go hang out at Possum Kingdom Lake listen to The Heathen's and drink some Shiner Bock or Lone Star and eat some ribs and brisket or Tex/Mex and as long as you behave no one gets hurt and all will have a good time.

I essentially argued something similar. I am not sure secession is practical. Debate? Sure, why not.

The first ASSUMPTION is that the government/constitution isn't hopelessly fucked up. Actually, there is nothing wrong with our current constitution, except that we don't follow it anymore. Not sure how starting over changes that.

The issues that would have to be dealt with, cohesively, includes, but are not limited to, a new central bank, a new money system (if its gold and everyone else was fiat, it would crush exports, no?), a new military, land/personal/mineral/water rights, guns, religion, taxes, spending, and so on. Yeah, everyone will get along and have the best interests at heart.

What happens to all the vets who expect their checks from Uncle Sam? Seniors and SS? Folks on SNAP? Military contractors? Corporate head quarters (Dallas has the highest per capita of corp HQs in the US) and tax implications?

My mind boggles at the idea.

I think Texas would be much worse off, even if the US allowed it, because most people today lack the types of qualities necessary to partake and contribution to forming a new state. It would be too late once folks realized it.

Regards,

Cooter

Why would you assume Corporates belong to US?  When were they nationalized?  Also assume U.S. allows.  Did the Brits "allow" the American Colonies?  Everything seems impossible right up until someone does it.  You know what they say about assuming.

President Theodore Roosevelt in 1906:

Behind the ostensible government sits enthroned an invisible government owing no allegiance and acknowledging no responsibility to the people [corporate monopolies/trusts]. To destroy this invisible government, to befoul the unholy alliance between corrupt business and corrupt politics is the first task of the statesmanship of the day.

Politicians have the responsibility and obligation to their constituents to follow moral and just path.  When they do not, this is what happens to a country, I believe.

In regards to Texas- 100,000 signatures were collected without the backing of any major political party in FIVE DAYS.  In Switzerland (with 1/3 the population of Texas) the threshold for such a measure would be the collection 100,000 signatures in EIGHTEEN MONTHS.

Methinks they could scrounge up another 200,000 signatures in a lot less than 17 months 25 days, at which point they would have met the threshold in the most advanced and sophisticated direct democracy in the world.

I see none of you are familiar with the history regarding the Hartford Convention. Given Mr. Paul's interpretation of it, I strongly recommend that he consider refamiliarizing himself with it as well. That wasn't a proud moment for the participants involved, nor is it a proud moment in US history.

This board is full of mental infants such as yourself who simply go with whatever current they're caught up in. At present, it's whatever feeble mewlings are sputtering out of Ron Paul's mouth. We still have idiots spouting off about secession when 200 years of political and legal precedent in the USA shows that approach to be a non-starter. People still think Texas can secede after all proof shown to the contrary, in particular.

Just keep fuckin' that chicken, folks... if you close your eyes hard enough it will surely end up being the girl of your dreams eventually.

Perhaps there is more than one interpretation of historical facts-

The widespread BS propaganda notion that the US Civil War was advanced by Lincoln over the issue of slavery is a convenient popular example, whereas the Whiskey Rebellion might be a more esoteric example, only slightly better known than the Hartford Convention, primarily because of the involvement of a certain canonized federalist general and politician with only a modicum of military mastery.

Cathgart got to do with this?  here's the deal mr. wannabe supreme court justice.  the relationship that the government has with "the people" is a contract, and the unwritten overiding element in it is you cant keep breaching the contract, be ruinous with the country's resources, destroy its currency along with peoples lives and be accountable to no one for it.  I mean, I have to ask you.  Just how far down the fucking rabbit hole are you prepared to go?  You're probably right, there won't be secession.  But, the attitude expressed by the silent majority, isn't about the black man in the office.  Its about the opposition to and disatisfaction of complete rape and pillage of the office and the resources it commands.  And this attitude is VERY electable.  ESPECIALLY after reading your shit diatribe.  To deny that there is a problem, other than what you believe to be a freak show, demonstrates the level of your ignorance and the delusion that the state is going to solve everybody's problems that you unfortunately suffer from.

If certain Texans are bone stock slope-headed stupid enough to actually attempt to give revolution a shot, you're going to see a really nasty replay of "Bleeding Kansas". I guarantee it. Most intended recipients will mount that green card like a bayonet and shove it up the ass of the person who handed it to them.

I dare those insurrectionist traitorous scumbags to show up on my doorstep and attempt to force allegiance to their illegal secession movement. They'll find they aren't the only ones in Texas armed and willing to fight for what they stand for. The better odds are y'all will stay at home pounding your keyboards and trying to impress your wives with how pumped you are from using the mouse.

Texas is looking at a $27 billion deficit. If they secede do they take with them their portion of the federal deficit as well? How might they raise money for a season or two of strong hurricanes? Of course they will blow oil exploration wide open with no regulations. Will they pay for the damage that might ensue to their neighbors when things start leaking? Will they have the resources to deal with continued drought? It would not surprise me to see them at some point completely overlook influx of illegal aliens from Mexico, so they can use them as poorly paid workers in Texan factories and the Texas government makes "free trade " deals with the U.S. In other words, Texas virtually becomes Mexico. Remember the Alamo.

When you compare the 50 laboratories of democracy after sorting them based on how their citizens voted in November 2008, only 10 Democratic-voting states are net recipients of federal subsidies, as opposed to 22 Republican states. Only one red state (Texas) is a net payer of federal taxes, as opposed to 16 blue states. One blue state (Rhode Island) pays as much as it gets.

And that is from a Libertarian perspective: http://reason.com/archives/2011/07/14/the-redblue-paradox

King County, the solidly-Democratic county that surrounds Seattle, provides "nearly 42% of the state's tax revenues, yet receives only 25% of the money spent from Washington's general fund." Conversely, five counties that require the most in services relative to the taxes they pay are largely Republican.

Polite? I am a massive douche bag because I have stated some of my opinions? Without once calling people here names. Occasionally I try to inject a bit of sarcasm or fun in my comments. Often putting in facts. Most times putting more than a single sentance zinger worth of effort into it. I do hope you actually get a chuckle out of my comments. That's cool, for whatever reason they occur. But douche bag for speaking my mind? And doing it quite nicely and socially. If you represent the Texan example of polite, then I will give the state a pass when I eventually tour down the east side of the rockies. Got to cross the Arctic circle first anyway. Been to most continents in my work, the oil exploration business. Met a lot of polite people all over the world, and been welcomed by them as I am polite to them, even when we are so different. I know polite. Received from people every where, given to people everywhere. I am happy to leave the experience of your Texas polite to last or never. I tried to write this as politely as possible. I do not know you. I now know we have differences of opinion in various ways. But I would not have presumed to judge you as a bad person in any way, except for you giving me a bit of evidence to think that now, by your own words.

Well, this entire thing is unfortunate.

Unless you're used to Texas, you cannot imitate it.  You're air bases will get closed.  Look, Argentinians bang pots, Parisians burn cars, and Texans secede.  Its a form of protest.  The box score is just the Voltage on the protest.

And to paraphrase Jean Claude, when its serious we have to buy ammo.  (In size).

But the idea that the 50 states secede and just leave Washington there with its debt in its hand has a nice appeal, ya know?

After 1945 the German city of Hannover wanted to return to the English Crown; Freistaat Bayern seceded 1923; Baden-Wuerttemberg wants to join Switzerland yaking 20$ German GDP with it. In Spain regions want independence like Catalonia. It seems quite normal for Texas to propose life before 1846 when Britain was keen to keep it independent of the US. The Federal System has become more and more like the EU imposing a uniformity across defined boundaries. The Federal Government is so omnipotent it thinks it can impose its will on Citizens of other countries in their own countries, so what hope Citizens of Texas have against Washington Rule remains to be determined.

Just because a million people "sign" a petition to do something does not mean that it is necessarily a great idea. It also does not mean that the majority of Texans would ever genuinely consider leaving the Union. It only means there are a whole lot of frustrated Republicans out there who just cannot seem to figure out how to win an election. Maybe if we stop running flip flopping jackasses like Romney and certain candidates who think that some forms of rape are legitimate we could actually win an election.

A lot of posters seem to be confusing Texas with Dodge City. It is not the old west out here anymore. It is a huge, diverse state where a very large percentage of the population believes in limited federal government, love America and are tired of watching it being run into the ground by big corporate and big financial interests.

As an actual Texan, I can tell you that one thing we are not is quitters and the vast, vast, majority of Texans are in no way fixin to quit on America.

About a year ago the Texas House passed a bill to hold TSA agents accountable for sexual misconduct regarding passengers and arrest them, just like a normal citizen would be arrested. 100% of all republicans and democrats in the House voted for this bill. How many times do you see all republicans and democrats agreeing on something?

When the bill went to the Texas Senate, a letter was sent to the State of Texas from the federal government saying that it would have no choice but to close down all air traffic in Texas if that bill was passed. Basically, they threatened a no-fly zone over Texas. Some called this an act of war.

Texas buckled and did not vote on the bill.

Now, the bill has been reintroduced in the Texas House. Maybe this time It becomes a law?

Another thought, what if Ron Paul runs for Governor (or President) of Texas?

Secession? Now that is just silly. The states signing this petition have even more useless eaters - niggers and dumb inbred white hillbillys - than any of the blue states. These "red states" would be economic disaster zones. This demonstrates the genius of the shepherds and their masterful control of the sheep lettuce head people. The ones that want independence from global government are actually the dumbest of the cattle - the gammas. The slightly higher betas are in the statist zones that have openly accepted the destruction of the ancient constitution. LOL! 1.  Blue Nation: New England, New York City, North Jersey.

2.  Great Lakes Nation: Upstate New York, South Jersey, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Northern Illinois. (skip over Indiana)

3.  Oregon Territory: Oregon, Washington, Hawaii.

4.  California.

5.  Red Nation:  The remainder.

I will move from North Jersey to one of the remainder.
