The Most Popular Rifle in History: An Infographic

Tyler Durden's picture

We have shown the recent surges in both sales and capitalization of several far, far smaller weapons-makers in the US: Smith & Wesson and Sturm, Ruger (along with the world's seemingly inexorable demand for 'bulk ammo'), but one can only wonder whether the market cap. of Kalashnikov (the maker of the world's most popular rifle) would be greater than that of AAPL if the firm had been based in the US and gone public at inception.

Serbian wolf gold (NNY) is good boxer primed brass, but it's getting pricey at $18+ for a box of 20. I used to get norma cheaper.

Nobody, in the 99% of battles fought with the AK, cared about the rainbow trajectory. The AK's decent rate of fire, .30 stopping power, and above all, it's reliabilty were far more important. Under a 100 yards nobody cares about trajectory. It's can I kill the other  guy before he does me...and your shit better work when it's trigger time.

The nice thing about the AK, that is recognized by many, is the feeling of invincibility it gives you in an urban environment.  Heck, you can stand in the middle of the street and with a long burst let the world know you are somebody who is not to be dealt with lightly.

Usually those types of actions are followed by a thwack and people around you ask "where did that come from?"

In a time of chaos, shotguns would be better. I doubt you will be firing at people more than 25 feet away. Buy shotguns and 9mm or 45ACP. Carry a 380ACP for concealed carry in the summer, something heavier when you wear a coat or jacket

What someone can conceal is almost entirely determined by the person's size.  Bigger people can conceal bigger weapons.

We finally see a big advantage possessed by the fat fucks.

It's fun shooting guns, it's fun thinking about them, etc. but they are only an absolute last-resort when your life is on the line.  Let's all hope and pray the US government dissolves as peacefully as possible.  They have to know it's almost time to throw in the towel.  Too many Americans own guns for there to be a serious totalitarian crackdown, and the Internet has been birthing new libertarians by the boatload over the last 10 years.

Kudos to the Egyptian military who will probably back the people like the Polish Army also backed the Polish people - ditto the Romanians.

I worry about slimy f**ks like scum Pentagon and Joint Chiefs scum like Betrayus who were screwing muzzies in Tampa(x) named Kelly.   The U.S. military has a poor record because they usually support the elites.   They did after WW1 in shooting veterans also the BS Civil War,

The egyptian people voted for the muslim brotherhood MAJORITY in their parliament, plus an even-more-muslim brotherhood minority party, that together are well beyond a supermajority.    A dictatorship is what they'll have, whatever happened today, punctually, with Morsi.    Also, it isn't the army that'll be threatening lives there.    It will be biblical scale famine, if they can't get the foreign aid to keep flowing.

You're correct. That's probably not going to stop them from at least making a cursory effort at attempting to seize the citizenry's gold and guns.  No one's stopped their plunder yet, so there's no reason for them to stop.

That said, the turd brains of the Obama regime tend to be very lazy about everything other than campaigning.  After all, that's what totalitarianism is - a pointless, continuous, campaign. Nothing more.

Fuck 'em.

Some would, for sure. But those gun buy back programs generally get old junk.  Folks who understand why they've invested in an AR or AK probably aren't going to turn them in just because the despot ordered them to in the name of superstitions or dreams conjured up by his father.

Whoever that was.

Love it or hate it, the AK is one of the great icons of the 20th century.  No other rifle has been built in the numbers it has.  With that in mind, it is more than likely going to turn up in any collapse scenario you care to imagine.  For that reason alone, people should be familiar with it.  It is heavy.  The ammunition is heavy and it rattles when you move with it. Still it works every time you pull the trigger if the ammo is good and it will shoot through a cinder block.

I am one of the small arms makers the article is referring to and I am currently producing AKM's and AK74's. The AK is the quintessential battle rifle, its accuracy very good, albeit not as good as that of an AR15 but this comes with a price. The AR15’s cannot compare to the AK when it comes to reliability and that is what is most important in battle, that whenever you need it your weapon has to work. It is the difference between life and death and the AK exceeds this requirement hands down. Considering most combat engagements occur at less than 100 yrds the AR15’s performance is overkill. Besides who wants to have to breakdown and clean their weapon every time they you use it, theoretically you could never clean your AK and it will function for a very very long time. It’s a tank while the AR15 is a Mercedes, which one would you want to go into battle with?

If you can find and afford a V.58 with a proper receiver and pre-ban Czech parts (including original barrel) buy it.  I have to agree with the V.58 snobs -- the V.58 is probably superior to the AK.  Lighter, better rcoil management, more accurate.

It looks like VEPRs and Saigas may get hard to find (at least under the current stamp), buy them while you can: http://cheaperthandirt.com/blog/?p=32272
