Rand Paul's #Filiblizzard Enters Its Sixth (Now Tenth) Hour

Tyler Durden's picture

Starting at 1147ET, Rand Paul began his James-Joycean discussion on US-based Drone strikes, six hours later (and with some minor aid from Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) and Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX)), he is still going. Have you ever felt so strongly about something that you were willing to talk about it for over six hours? From Cruz's note that today is the 177th anniversary of the fall of (or stand at) the Alamo to Paul's rhetorical (we think) question to the President: "Are you going to just drop a hellfire missile on Jane Fonda?" We suspect the night is yet young as the snowquester continues.

The Atlantic summarizes:

Rand Paul spent Wednesday doing something you don't see very often—an honest-to-goodness, non-stop filibuster speech on the floor of the U.S. Senate. Lacking the 41 votes necessary to prevent a cloture vote that would block the nomination of John Brennan to be the CIA director, Paul chose to stall the old-fashioned way, through the original meaning of the talking filibuster. As long as Paul spoke (and stood), he held the Senate captive — and he had a lot to say about drones.

Paul opened by vowing to "speak until I can no longer speak." He held true to that, though senators from several other states (including a Democrat from Oregon) came to the floor to ask questions, during which breaks Paul presumably attended to necessary personal needs.

Paul's was the first talking filibuster since Bernie Sanders spoke for 8.5 hours back in 2010, beginning at around 11:45 a.m. and lasting well into the evening. Whether or not Paul's intended audience — the president — paid any attention remains unclear.

By way of reference (via About.com), The record for the longest filibuster goes to U.S. Sen. Strom Thurmond of South Carolina, who spoke for 24 hours and 18 minutes against the Civil Rights Act of 1957, according to U.S. Senate records. Thurmond began speaking at 8:54 p.m. on Aug. 28 and continued until 9:12 p.m. the following evening, reciting the Declaration of Independence, Bill of Rights, President George Washington's farewell address and other historical documents along the way.

Some choice, totally out-of-context quotes, so far (via The Atlantic):

"If there was an ounce of courage in this body, I would not be here alone."

"The point isn't that any body in our country is Hitler..."

"If you're going to kill people in America, you need to have rules and we need to know what those rules are. ... I don't want to find out that having seven days worth of food in your house is on the list."

"To be bombed in your sleep? There's nothing American about that."

Cruz is a Neocon Goldman Sachs whore  -he'll put on an act trying to show he is concerned-may even give an occasional good vote  -but Cruz is owned by AIPAC/Goldman Sachs  -don't ever doubt that for a second. Texas made a big mistake being fooled by this con man  -He and fellow Senator John Cornyn are as bad a pair as you get  - might as well be represented by Lyndsey Graham   - the closet homo who is owned by the bad guys.

but what if your cafe experience poses a
dire national threat to the well being of the

like in the movies. you might have some codes that

been on your case and has warrants to tap your phone
and you are about to make a critical ph ............
iiiiiiiiiii zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.................
and the next thing you know you have spilled your latte.
then what?
see? they need the greater authority for greater hypothetical
security which requires the elimination of your liberty and
you are left with the cafe menu of choices but you, my friend,
are a vegetarian at a burger establishment in cow country.
but that was the last thought you were allowed and passers by
barely noticed as the drone dissolved into the distance,
never even landed. in time it never even happened or they say
there were some anomalous heat signature fluctuations near/at cafe
11 in sector 9, i hear jen is pregnant?
.
i can't wait for the first reality t.v. drone strike program,
when it becomes fully normalized. still, few will sense there is
a problem.

Wed, 03/06/2013 - 20:47 | 3306923 blindman
blindman's picture

if we live in a system that approves of exterminating
uncharged, uninfected, "presumed innocent"
citizens, or anyone else, why do we
need a warrant to listen to a phone call or e-mail?
.
do we even need a judicial or legislative branch of government?
.
so cspan would have to find something else to put on the tube?
. (maybe poker games?)
i never liked the idea of presumption of innocence anyway...
i'm a suspicious person, like most i presume everyone is just
as guilty as they are innocent; of what i don't know but
you get the idea and so do the courts. most of the time they
convict and sentence people for crimes they never committed,
it is the system of justice as they call it. the a.g. realizes this.
.
it could all make sense if you just change the presidential
title to King or Lord God. or maybe just have the man claim
The True N Only One God speaks to him directly informing him
which heat signatures are Evil. americans and israelis
could accept that, generally speaking.
the criteria for entry to a secret kill list is also secret.
i wonder if the king lord can exterminate entire classes of people
in the name of paranoid national security? why not? it has been
done before, there is a rich history of it. the attorney
general would not object or find legal fault because the king
can do whatever he deems appropriate, council must assist or he
finds new council.
some might think there was a war fought, revolutionary, to put all
this garbage to rest. i thought that too but all that has been
forgotten due to the blind allegiance to fiat debts incurred to
the federal reserve note system. it takes millions of debt notes
to become a representative of the poor and that debt is owed to
the bankers, that is all the politicians need to remember.
.
we no longer elect presidents, kings are selected for us by
the bankers and they can kill anything they want to kill, anywhere,
anytime. the "economy" would like many thousands of drones in the sky
for strikes and surveillance. nukes in drones? how long?
here the thing, can man, has man, ever said no to a technologic
application
on humanitarian grounds, principles or moral consideration?
there a clue to our problem perhaps?
the answer is no, in times of war, no. there another reason
war is so seductive and destructive.
.
so now we hear the twitter update ...
someone brought up the peace prize and killing the citizens,
your employers - taxpayers - the actual real people populating
the country,
with drones. that is a good point and disorienting.
and then he said the american public is frustrated.
i don't think "frustrated" really covers it. not to become
acrimonious but there is contempt involved in the public
attitude to being treated like a non person. a terrorist for
living and being aware of the crimes that are resulting in the
destruction of what has been called "the last great hope" for
mankind , right or wrong. there are principles there, principles
some deny ever existed or ever could exist among men. they won't
have that discussion in public because to take one side of it
is to confess and embrace a lust for power over other men for
the sake of your own ignorant and deluded fantasy.
.
heat signature? non humans, it isn't even homicide.
it may be too late for us.

rand paul just used the term "..our killing program ..
(determined by) heat signature..." . paraphrased. so are
we to accept we now have a "heat signature based killing
program"? seems like we got to this sick place so quickly,
already normalized. they need to call it something else ..
like..." heat signature based deep cleansing program ".
i could hear that out of that creep press secretary kid obama
sends out to talk to the prestitutes.
that carney kid, he even sneers like cheney. he looks like
someone who would say anything to anyone for a snickers bar; smart
kid if you're addicted to snickers and the finer things in

Sen. Yeah, I became suspicious of Ron Paul when, in 2008, he handed his followers over to the "Constitution Party" which is actually a christian extremist group.  Interesting article.  I haven't trusted Rand since day one.  It was pretty clear early on he rode his fathers coat tails and was not cut from the same cloth.

That was my 1st and last attempt at participating in Politics.  Went to my state convention as a delagate for Ron Paul and watched the shadiest dirtiest and most childish antics I've ever seen from a large group of adults.  I figured it extrapolates out to the federal level and was certainly the end of my remaining scraps of faith in "the system".

I see this board is somewhat split on Rand Paul because of his past statements.  I share those concerns as well but let's put some of that into context.  Being active in politics is not like posting on ZH or any other blog.  You actually have to face your foe face to face.  No hiding behind a computer screen.  You have to take the stage and make a speech in front of a large group of delegates and media who are filming what you say and flashing pictures of you.

When, it comes your turn to speak, you have to hope the guy/gal in front of you was a complete idiot but they often are not and are polished speakers sent by the party.  When it is your turn to speak, you take the stage the lights are on you and your knees are a little weak.  Everything you rehearsed that you were going to say suddenly betrays your mind and at that point you have to go into extemporaneous mode.  When that happens, you had better have a solid core of beliefs to draw from or you are fucked.

Would you be pissed at me to know that I sort of pretended to back the McCainiac to get myself elected to GOP office in 2008?  Once elected, I turned on them so fast it made their heads spin.  In politics, you lie your ass off or you will never be elected to jack shit except coffee gofer.  Have you, who are hating on Rand right now, ever stood up in front of a large crowd of potentially hostile people and tried to deliver a speech much less a filibuster in front of the world?

There can be a lot of reasons why Rand said what he said when he said it.  You have to remember that Rand is not Ron and needed to seperate himself from his father to some degree.  Rand wanted to appear to be moderate.  While I found some of what has Rand has said to be abrasive in the past, he is making up for all of that now in the spirit of liberty.

While I have no illusions that this nation can be saved at this point, valid arguments can still can be presented and that is what I see and hear Rand doing right now.  To me, a veteran of listening to overwindy politicians at various political conventions, what Rand is doing is inspiring.  I sincerely hope that he can keep going as long as possible and it is a great thing to see some other Senators have his back.  The recent Twtter comments reading on the floor were outstanding.

well, well stated!  You expressed my sentiments exactly. Rand is his Dad in substance (maybe better) but not in style. You have to play politics, you have to learn the art of making coalitions if you want to get things done. Rand knows hjow to work the Glenn Beck types  -he knows how to use them, just as they need him to show they are not completely phony Neocon establishment whores. Rand is very smart  - he played up to the Neocons and his dumbass Tea party morons by criticizing Hagel  -but there was never any doubt he would not vote for him   -especially if his vote was needed. Rand is the future and the hope  -the best chance we will have to get a real choice in 2016.

With all of these confirmations coming at the same time - Hagel, Kerry, Brennen, Lew, he has been one of the only Senators that has asked hard questions and who has been poking the bear with a stick so to speak.

Even with this fillibuster after waiting for answers to his letters since the 25th of January with no response, he possibly won't be able to stop Brennen from being confirmed, but at least he is able to bring attention to the fact that Obamao seems to think he has the legal authority to kill Americans on American Soil with drone strikes, without trial or guilt.

He possibly won't be able to stop the nom, but he also knows by going about this the way he did that he is going to get a tremendous amount of media coverage which just might be seen by some dolts out there who might get a clue. We will see...........

Narrow minded people have narrow fields of vision. It is very easy to keep things out of their sight (out of sight out of mind, we don't talk about it, it isn't an issue, first rule of disinformation). Same thing with distracted individuals. The Ron Paul disciples are not ideologically consistant libertarians at least the Conservative Republican flavor types. They strike me as born again Christian types just in an ideological type of way. The main thing we have in common is smaller government and rule of law. Idol worship is not libertarianish. Iraq today saw the grandiose enthronement of a new Iraqi catholic leader, and all the world sent its emmissaries to witness this. Billions given to Iraq: most of it stolen by its elite.

According to Wikipedia, a Judas goat is a trained goat used in general animal herding.

Canaduh's picture

100 points for you Sir or Madame! the rest of the wikipedia definition- . The Judas goat is trained to associate with sheep or cattle, leading them to a specific destination. In stockyards, a Judas goat will lead sheep to slaughter, while its own life is spared. Judas goats are also used to lead other animals to specific pens and onto trucks. They have fallen out of use in recent times, but can still be found in various smaller slaughterhouses in some parts of the world.

I found this excerpt from that wiki page very interesting-

The phrase has also been used to describe a goat that is used to find feral goats that are targeted for eradication. The Judas goat is outfitted with a transmitter, painted in red and then released. The goat then finds the remaining herds of feral goats, allowing hunters to exterminate them

Well then, you suggest that I go along with the herd in order to not be targeted for eradication.  To that I would argue you have the spine of a sheep.  Pick your path.

Just so we know what the other rank and file Republicrats were doing tonight.

http://firstread.nbcnews.com/_news/2013/03/06/17211439-gops-graham-on-ob...

Lindsey Graham took the lead on the guest list. Barack Obama extended the invitations. And on Wednesday night, after weeks of gridlock, a dozen Republican senators are dining out with the president.

Planning to break bread? Sens. Saxby Chambliss, R-Ga.; Kelly Ayotte, R-N.H.; Dan Coats, R-Ind.; Tom Coburn, R-Okla.; Richard Burr, R-N.C.; Mike Johanns, R-Neb.; Pat Toomey, R-Pa.; John Hoeven, R-N.D.; and Corker, Johnson, McCain and Graham.

At least Saxby and Toomey took the time to help out Rand before going to dinner. The rest of them just shows you what they care about.

Sad thing is, to be generous, 90% of Americans have no idea what you mean by that comment.  They have no idea about the Reichstag fire, or who the National Socialists targeted first to cement their power (I.e. the German SPD Social Democrats, targeted via the Enabling Act).

RE Rand Paul's fillibuster...he may or may not be a "hero" and at this point, too little too late, but if all you're going to do is wait for the man without sin to appear, good luck with that.  Hell, to be honest I think RP is setting himself up to be John Connor and lead the resistance once the T-100s go operational vice thinking anyone can realistically stop Leviathan from within the system.

Meanwhile, former CIA Director Petraeus' reputation is now totally destroyed after the Guardian had a story showing Petraeus was the evil wizard behind the curtain responsible for promoting the use of Iraqi torture centers during the U.S. occupation.  http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2013/mar/06/pentagon-iraqi-torture-centr...

Bradley Manning, the WikiLeaker, provided much of the information showing the role of Petraeus' immediate subordinates in funding the torture centers.  So naturally, the U.S. Army tortured Manning as much as it could, but no cattle prods which leave marks.  The Guardian website even has video of Petraeus' henchmen on the job, but no audio of the screams from the Sunni torture victims.

Why do I think that the CIA rank and file, which hated Petraeus, had a hand in this story?  Time for another War Crimes Tribunal.

Ted Cruz is actually making sense. I find this novel, unexpected and amazing coming from this new Senator. He is currently saying that Congress has NOT authorized drone strikes, and any such on American citizens on American soil are invalid. This sounds like building a case for impeachment, and I hope those layabouts in the House are listening.

It is enough; too many lies, too many thefts, too many denials of life and liberty. Vickie Weaver deserved better; the unnamed men, women and children of Waco deserved better; and WE deserve better. Impeach Obama, and begin restoration of the Republic.
