Rand Paul's #Filiblizzard Enters Its Sixth (Now Tenth) Hour
Starting at 1147ET, Rand Paul began his James-Joycean discussion on US-based Drone strikes, six hours later (and with some minor aid from Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) and Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX)), he is still going. Have you ever felt so strongly about something that you were willing to talk about it for over six hours? From Cruz's note that today is the 177th anniversary of the fall of (or stand at) the Alamo to Paul's rhetorical (we think) question to the President: "Are you going to just drop a hellfire missile on Jane Fonda?" We suspect the night is yet young as the snowquester continues.
The Atlantic summarizes:
Rand Paul spent Wednesday doing something you don't see very often—an honest-to-goodness, non-stop filibuster speech on the floor of the U.S. Senate. Lacking the 41 votes necessary to prevent a cloture vote that would block the nomination of John Brennan to be the CIA director, Paul chose to stall the old-fashioned way, through the original meaning of the talking filibuster. As long as Paul spoke (and stood), he held the Senate captive — and he had a lot to say about drones.
Paul opened by vowing to "speak until I can no longer speak." He held true to that, though senators from several other states (including a Democrat from Oregon) came to the floor to ask questions, during which breaks Paul presumably attended to necessary personal needs.
Paul's was the first talking filibuster since Bernie Sanders spoke for 8.5 hours back in 2010, beginning at around 11:45 a.m. and lasting well into the evening. Whether or not Paul's intended audience — the president — paid any attention remains unclear.
By way of reference (via About.com), The record for the longest filibuster goes to U.S. Sen. Strom Thurmond of South Carolina, who spoke for 24 hours and 18 minutes against the Civil Rights Act of 1957, according to U.S. Senate records. Thurmond began speaking at 8:54 p.m. on Aug. 28 and continued until 9:12 p.m. the following evening, reciting the Declaration of Independence, Bill of Rights, President George Washington's farewell address and other historical documents along the way.
Some choice, totally out-of-context quotes, so far (via The Atlantic):
"If there was an ounce of courage in this body, I would not be here alone."
"The point isn't that any body in our country is Hitler..."
"If you're going to kill people in America, you need to have rules and we need to know what those rules are. ... I don't want to find out that having seven days worth of food in your house is on the list."
"To be bombed in your sleep? There's nothing American about that."

...shall be my brother!
Congress is full of busters.
dubs.
Tag-team style, in lieu of old-style single speaker, just might enable a long, record-breaking filibuster. We would see that happen at a little after Noon tomorrow (Th. 3/7), the lead-up to which, and follow-through, might actually draw some real national attention...
...so we would hope.
(That would be tough to ignore, even for a busy President.)
"Code Pink", for those that do not know, has to do with the following:

Well, I as many here have been hooked on this for hours on end. My respect for these gentlemen is profoundly increased. There may be hope in the Senate at last. I expected endless time consuming readings and ramblings. Instead, I am getting an welcomed education. This has been long overdue. Its going to be an interesting night and tomorrow as we see who else has the huevos to step up.
Thank You for your succint observation PacOps. A great deal of effort has been put forth by many here just to get to this point. As has been noted earlier: This is the political version of "Fight Club". I have many years of fightclub experience and what I am watching is a thing of beauty.

"History teaches us that the capacity of things to get worse is limitless. Roman history suggests that the short, happy life of the American republic may be coming to its end... [the US will probably] maintain a facade of constitutional government and drift along until financial bankruptcy overtakes it.
Of course, bankruptcy will not mean the literal end of the United States any more than it did for Germany in 1923, China in 1948, or Argentina in 2002-03.
It might, in fact, open the way for an unexpected restoration of the American system, or for military rule or simply for some development we cannot yet imagine. Certainly, such a bankruptcy would mean a drastic lowering of our standard of living, a loss of control over international affairs, a process of adjusting to the rise of other powers, including China and India..."

Fiat Monetary Theory: The Gamblers
'The Gamblers'
"The historical behavior of interest rates and growth rates in U.S. data suggests that the government can, with a high probability, run temporary budget deficits and then roll over the resulting government debt forever.
The purpose of this paper is to document this finding and to examine its implications. Using a standard overlapping-generations model of capital accumulation, we show that whenever a perpetual rollover of debt succeeds, policy can make every generation better off.
This conclusion does not imply that deficits are good policy, for an attempt to roll over debt forever might fail. But the adverse effects of deficits, rather than being inevitable, occur with only a small probability."
Ball, Elmendorf, Mankiw, The Deficit Gamble
As with most Ponzi schemes, modern fiat currencies are a matter of degree, belief, and tipping points.
There are always limitations in any system, and in paper money systems the debt must be balanced by real growth and investment, an organic growth that makes the rolling debt burden, which is really the basis of the money itself, sustainable and productive. That growth must be broadly based in order to support consumption from within the system itself, and this implies income commensurate with increasing productivity.
The failure of every fiat currency has been tied to the abuse of power, in the non-organic use of created money not to increase the productive growth of the economy, but to establish monopolies, cartels, speculation, and of course, aggressive war, all in pursuit of the outsized enrichment of a relative few who define themselves as an elite.
And human nature being what it is, all paper money systems have failed within a few hundred years.
There is a variation of Fiat Monetary Theory, also known as fiat money, which seeks to distinguish itself by its name in addition to its penchant for sophistry, called Modern Monetary Theory.
This variant eliminates the debt problem by switching from a debt based currency to a pure fiat currency issued directly by the government. The longer term problem of currency revulsion, or the rejection by the people of the stated value of the currency, is resolved by greater use of government force.
The resort to force is a tell tale marker of all ideological cults which are unable to achieve a natural stability and an informed, willing acceptance. That force may include psychological persuasion including propaganda and ridicule.
We are seeing something like this today in Europe, with the compulsion to enforce austerity as the technocrats and careerists refuse to admit that, that by its very design, the Eurozone is inherently unstable.
And the reforms required to avert disaster are unthinkable, because they will diminish their wealth and power. And so they become increasingly desperate and self-destructive.
Since the leaders are naturally superior, it is the people that have failed them, because they did not believe enough, work hard enough, sacrifice enough. And so they must be punished." jca

Now it's Marco Rubio trying to interject some reason and restraint into the discussion. I wish him luck; but it's time to stand, and prevent further inroads against life and liberty by a rogue administration bent on dominance. The Supreme Court could also weigh in on this, and mention how the Constitution does not allow extrajudicial murder based on Executive whim.
Come on House, time to start the impeachment hearings. You have plenty of evidence now. If Harry Reid stalls it in the Senate, then there's got to be some way to convince him to do his job. Maybe if enough public pressure gets built, he will see the need to behave like a Senator instead of a politician.
What if a Senator were confined to a wheelchair? Would he be unable to wage a filibuster?
That's ridiculous... Of course the Senator would be able to wage a filibuster... So long as they kept talking...
Why do I get the feeling this fillibuster is going to end with a hellfire missile?
The 2016 presidential slogan has been established, simple yet appropriate:

here a biscuit. if americans support the use of drones,
with their inherent and inevitable short comings, against
innocent persons, collateral damage heat signatures, in far
off places why would they think they themselves should not
be subject to the exact same injustice? by what criteria,
principle or exception to this murderous promiscuity do they think
they have earned or are otherwise entitled to exemption? by what virtue?
some one might ask? it is not a "surrender" to contemplate
that thing formerly known as "justice". it is a virtue leading
to coherency and perhaps peace, that thing that is always there
waiting to destroy the war based economic disease poised to accelerate
the destruction of the entire planet and all quality of life,
certainly all liberty and freedom and government by the people.
Although proud to be a Kentuckian supporting Rand, I am ashamed to say Senator McConnell is from my state. Someone take the mike from him please and send him off to the glue factory with other Kentucky Derby nags.

Who are those guys running around behind Senator Toomey? The Gestapo?
Browncoats. (I keed, I keed)
Minority Leader McConnell, the other Senator from Kentucky, is an old-school slimy money politico. Slimy. (I know. I'm in Kentucky.) It is interesting and telling to see him come out (along with the other guys who, pushing midnight, are gathering in the Senate chambers) for a crack at the microphone. There's some momentum here. No one wants to be left out of something memorable and significant.
+1 Ludwig. This is an interesting event to be sure.

Evasion and obfuscation is the only response given so far by Holder, as rightly highlighted now by this professorial senator. Is Holder up to the job or simply a 'useful idiot', and 'educated fool? It beggars belief that a U.S. Attorney General could be so shallow, and ignorant.
Dumb like a fox.
I used to think Bush's AGs were the worst...dull witted partisan bootlickers. Holder has shown me the light that nothing is worse than a cunning partisan bootlicker. He is the American equivalent of Beria to (insert American equivalent) Stalin.
Now Durbin is trying to obscure the issue, bringing in irrelevant 9/11 trivia to try and defuse the opposition. He's a tool, and we must be making a difference if he finds it necessary to get up and bloviate and bore the audience away from the issues.
Durbin makes snakes look upright and righteous.
Fuck You Dick Durbin, you baiting piece of shit. Sorry. Had to say so.
Citing 9-11 as reason to suspend habeas corpus is the weakest rebuttal. Nine-Eleven was bullshit, and the murderers still need to be brought to justice.

This documentary is about the foreign policy of the United States. It is the first of three parts. It demonstrates the importance of the political economy, the Mafia principle, propaganda, ideology, violence and force.
It documents and explains how the policy is based on the interest of major corporations and a tiny elite to increase profits and the United States governments own interests in maintaining and expanding it's imperialistic influence.
Inside the United States this has been made possible with a propaganda of fear for the horrible enemies like the Soviet Union, Communists and so on and a love for "free markets", "democracy", "freedom" and so on. Externally (and increasingly internally) this has caused massive poverty and suffering, genocide, war, coups, crushed unions and popular movements and environmental destruction."

Does anyone doubt that Obama wants the United States to be considered a battle field?
Does anyone doubt that Obama will rally the MSM to drown-out all criticism?

Lots of effort LC55. We can smile tonight. Only tonight.
Right on. But, maybe it is a start!
It was more than a start. The new normal narrative was hijacked last night. That was a line drawn in the wet concrete. I just try to keep things in perspective and put my usual use of hyperbole back in my vest pocket for things like that. Have a great day LC55!
Why not talk about trying the Chinese president, Chinese congress, Chinese criminals justice system and Chinese lobbies?
I'm disappointed -- if kinda relieved -- the filibuster didn't go all night. I was prepared to go all the way (and work tomorrow). I missed the end on a smoke break, pacing, thinking....
Not to belabor the 9/11 thing, but the references tonight got me thinking. It was not an obscure understanding in the day -- late-90s - Y2K - Bush Fla. election sham w/Supreme Court installation of a President, Dot-Com crash, Bush's declining popularity, other circumstances -- it was not an obscure understanding that the Elite were chomping at the bit for "another Pearl Harbor." It was required: Things and events were oscillating too wildly. The people had to be "brought to focus."
After the first plane hit, one of my employees called to tell me we were under attack, and wanted to know if we were working that day. That was the first I'd heard of it. (And of course we would work that day.) We hung up, and all I could think was "Those sons of bitches actually did it." The day and days after rolled out as they did, and the rest is "history."
The mainstream media acted as enabler to eventually put Saddam Hussein into one of the pilot's seats. But there were pockets of skepticism on the internet. One site, the original 9/11 Timeline (its founder soon departed), had rafts of documentation and analysis on the plausibility (or its lack) of the event as depicted, of the countless discrepancies in the (formulation of the) official narrative.
I was going through a divorce and drinking a lot, so I've forgotten way more than I retained. But one heavily corroborated fact still sticks with me: The severity of the turn of the second plane into the second tower was so tight, it could not have been done by human strength, but only by remote control.
I've known this for what? ~ twelve years? But it didn't hit me 'til tonight, listening to sellout politicians cite 9/11 as reason for accepting vague pledges of political restraint. THAT plane was a drone!
Shit. I've never put a word to the thing. That plane was a drone.
.

Some with notes, but most of it was extemporaneous especially RP's. I'm really glad that I saw as much of it as I did.
You know why people like Dick Turban jumped in? He needed to add a counterpoint for the state media to write "state diplomacy" masquerading as news piece concerning this filibuster. Holder initially establishes a strawman argument then it is used that as a fallback position aka Dick Cheese Turban. That is exactly how it will be framed in hit pieces against Rand today and tommorrow in state media mouthpieces like the Associated Press. It went on too long and got too much social media coverage aka top trending tweet was #standwithrand that rule number one of disinformation if we don't talk about it, it isn't an issue no longer applies.
If you don't think so here are some of the rules of disinfomation as the White House, Capo Ball Holder and their associates used them.
1: If you don't speak about it, it isn't an issue.
A: Well that one is easy, why did Rand do the filibuster in the first place genuises?
2: Become beligerant and evasive.
A: Did they bother to give Rand a straight answer?
3: Make strawman arguments
A: See Holder and his 9/11 and Pearl Harbor justifications.
4: Invoke Authority
A: Hairy Reid...
5. Establish new or fall back upon previous strawman arguments
A: Dick Cheese Turban
And the state media will use those strawman arguments in the name of "public diplomacy" to print as news.
You may see the state media and public diplomacy trolls use some other disinformation techniques like the following
Motive Questioning aka call it political gain and not a real principled stand.
Hit and Run tactics aka comments in the peanut gallery on major traffic "information" sources.
The tried and true name calling and ridicule.
Fitting of facts to alternate conclusions. Probably see this used in "news" pieces aka the strawman arguments made.
Especially the ridicule. The portrayal of Rand Paul as a curiosity has been a staple of the media for awhile now.
I know few will see this but it's an interesting read:

Convenient how Al Queda is hissing and spitting on the MSM today.
To be fair and mentally unbalanced here is the AP piece. On the surface it seems neutral but it most certainly is a state media hit piece.
I'll break it down. Show how the disinformation in the article.
http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/U/US_BRENNAN_CIA?SITE=AP&SECTION=HO...
First let's start with the updated portion, which of course is moved to the top since most people don't read more than about 2 - 5 paragraphs in and then skip to the conclusion without reading the middle portion.
First the original headline.
Senator uses old-style filibuster to block CIA nominee.
Now the updated headline is this
Senator's filibuster on CIA nominee divides GOP
To be fair McCain needed to get his sleep first before chiming in so they couldn't run with this angle until now.
But the fact is this establishes 2 disinformation techniques
1. Change the subject.
It is obvious why on multiple levels. it also sets the table for the technique.
2. Establish new or fall back upon previous strawman arguments
Key word associations, subtle almost subliminal influence of ideas
GOP Divides
Why is this important this is where math and linguistics cross paths. When you put words into a vector based matrix distance between words usually has a correlation between the relevance of one word in relation to another as far as implied meaning, in this case the distance measurement would be 1 since they are right next to each other. Order is not that important only distance.
Lets analyze the update first.
WASHINGTON (AP) -- The GOP has split over a Republican senator's filibuster of President Barack Obama's CIA nominee and claims about the use of drones in the Unites States.
A: This isn't the real story just a subplot but the fact it is put to the top is to minimize the original reason and try to change the narrative. This update should be it's own seperate story and be sourced as related news. Change subject, strawman comes next.
Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul spoke for nearly 13 hours on Wednesday, demanding an answer from the administration on its authority to use lethal force and drones.
A:Change subject again, that is not what he asked, he asked for answer from the administration on its authority to use lethal force and drones on U.S. citizens on within the borders of the United States.
But Republicans John McCain and Lindsey Graham said Thursday that Paul's claims were unfounded, and said the debate unnecessarily created fear among Americans.
A: Emotionalize, Antagonize, and Goad tactic being used here based upon the change subject tactic established in first paragraph.
Key words associations here
debate unnecessarily created fear
Only problem there it wasn't a debate, it was a filibuster. People like Dick Cheese Turban tried to turn it into a debate.
Graham says Obama's actions were similar to what Republican President George W. Bush did.
A: Associate charge with old news. Blame Bush tactic, also plays into the emotionalize tactic.
McCain scoffs at Paul's suggestion that the U.S. would have attacked Jane Fonda when she traveled to North Vietnam during the war.
A: Ridicule and minimizing of the assertation instead of backing it up with some hard proof. Remember Rand is asking he isn't the one responsible for doing said action.
THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.
Break in stories at least they let you know where the break is but this is 6 paragraphs in now and most people's attention spans who are not really overly interested in this will have start to have wandered by now. Placement of update obscures the original story just like on boards here once the stories move off the front page or down the list they get less views.
I'll analyze the main article next....
Before I get to the main article they totally watered down the original article so I'll go with their now-official spin.
http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/U/US_BRENNAN_CIA?SITE=AP&SECTION=HO...
WASHINGTON (AP) -- Republicans split bitterly Thursday over a GOP senator's old-school filibuster of President Barack Obama's CIA nominee John Brennan amid claims that the administration could use drones to target Americans suspected of terrorism.
Just hours after Sen. Rand Paul ended his nearly 13-hour talkathon - and got an endorsement from Minority Leader and fellow Kentuckian Mitch McConnell - two senior Republicans on the Armed Services Committee dismissed Paul's claims as unfounded and ridiculous and expressed support for Obama's controversial drone program as the nation wages war against terrorism.
A: Same tactics as stated above for the first 2 paragraphs. Only difference now they added an new change the topic by spinning it back to Brennan's nomination and the Mitch McConnell subplot. They still dance around the real issue of killing Americans on US soil.
Freudan slip on the AP's part of the editor deflecting blame away from their new boss?
Obama's controversial drone program
Both Sens. John McCain of Arizona and Lindsey Graham of South Carolina also challenged members of their own party.
"To my Republican colleagues, I don't remember any of you coming down here suggesting that President Bush was going to kill anybody with a drone," Graham said in remarks on the Senate floor.
A: Same original tactics which is blame Bush and change the topic. Only problem there Lindsey some of them weren't in office when Bush was President like 2 of the biggest helpers of Rand's filibuster Mike Lee and Ted Cruz.
Notice how the key word associations of debate causes fear have been removed from the article now.
McCain scoffed at Paul's contention that the U.S. would have targeted actress Jane Fonda during her trip to Hanoi during the Vietnam War.
"I must say that the use of Jane Fonda's name does evoke certain memories with me, and I must say that she is not my favorite American, but I also believe that, as odious as it was, Ms. Fonda acted within her constitutional rights," said McCain, a prisoner of war in Vietnam for 5 1/2 years. "And to somehow say that someone who disagrees with American policy and even may demonstrate against it is somehow a member of an organization which makes that individual an enemy combatant is simply false. It is simply false."
During the height of the long war, Fonda traveled to North Vietnam, visited with the enemy and was widely vilified.
A: They dropped the ridcule and mininize the question tone disinformation technique now and try to make a more reasonable argument for McCain's statement. Try to make him look more sympathic and reasonable now in his condemnation of that statement by adding more context. Hehe they must have read my critique... Of course the emotionalize and invoke authority techniques are used with this line a prisoner of war in Vietnam for 5 1/2 years. His war service has nothing to do with the issue.
Key word associations and repeated for emphasis.
is simply false. It is simply false
Question is who is being false there. I'd like to say McCains's question fits Anwar al-Awlaki to a tee but there most certainly is more to that story than is in the public record and that it is not fair to speculate on without all the information on the table. His son also is a valid person to answer that (who wouldn't have been considered by any definition a combatant).
After his remarks, Graham told reporters that he had planned to vote against Brennan's nomination but now intends to support the nominee because the confirmation fight has become a referendum on the drone program.
A: Graham trying to have his cake and eat it.
Paul is pressing the administration for greater clarity on whether the Obama administration has the authority to use lethal force, such as a drone, against a suspected terrorist who is a U.S. citizen.
"Do you have the authority to kill Americans on American soil?" Paul summed up the question for reporters on Thursday. He said he had not received a response from the White House.
A: Finally it only took them 7 paragraphs to get to the key question.
BTW AP just updated the article again.
Here is the AP update.
The Obama administration bowed to demands from Republicans blocking a vote on the nomination of John Brennan to head the CIA on Thursday, stating there are limits to a president's ability to order drone strikes on U.S. soil against suspected terrorists who are American citizens.
The reassurances were contained in a letter from Attorney General Eric Holder to Sen. Rand Paul, a Kentucky Republican who staged a filibuster across 13 hours on Wednesday demanding an answer to the question.
It was unclear whether Holder's letter would persuade Paul and others supporting him to permit a vote on Brennan. If not, a test vote is set for Saturday.
The letter itself is brief:
"It has come to my attention that you have now asked an additional question: `Does the president have the authority to use a weaponized drone to kill an American not engaged in combat on American soil?" Holder wrote Paul.
"The answer to that question is no."
Brennan has long appeared to hold enough votes to win confirmation.
But the letter marked the administration's third concession in recent days in its attempt to bring the matter to a vote.
Earlier this week, responding to demands from lawmakers in both parties, the White House gave members of the Senate intelligence committee access to legal opinions justifying the use of lethal drone strikes against terror suspects. It also gave Republicans documents relating to last year's deadly attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya.
If substantiated, WOW. Time to check some less biased mouthpieces.
Since Holder answered I'll stop ripping apart the AP but I can't let this one little piece from the article slide by without commenting.
This point goes back to word associations and distances.
From the article
"Cruz, an insurgent Republican with strong tea party backing"
See how they defined the Republicans and Ted Cruz and guilt by association linking the Tea Party to the word insurgent. Cruz must be really pissing some people off in high places already in such short time for a subtle character hit like that.
The official definition of insurgent
http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/insurgent
1
: a person who revolts against civil authority or an established government; especially : a rebel not recognized as a belligerent 2 : one who acts contrary to the policies and decisions of one's own political partyI'm sure they meant it in a double entendre type of way, since we know who else is considered insurgent types that certain agencies like to drone.
