US Secretly Deploys B-1 Strategic Bombers, E-6 "Doomsday" Planes Near North Korea

Tyler Durden's picture

First the US fanfared the placement of two F-22 Raptors in the Osan airbase of South Korea. Then it demonstratively launched a B-2 stealth bomber on a training mission over a South Korean gunnery range. Then it deployed an anti-ballistic missile defense system to Guam and positioned two guided-missile destroyers in the waters near Korea. And now, courtesy of the Aviationist, we learn that the Pentagon has escalated once more in an ongoing cat and mouse game with North Korea, of who blinks first, and dispatched several B-1 ("Bone") Lancer strategic long-range bombers to Andersen Air Force Base in Guam. What is different this time, however, is that unlike the previous very public and widely trumpeted reciprocal escalation steps, this particular deployment has been kept secret from the public (at least the broader public), "a fact that could be the sign that the U.S. is not only making symbolic moves (as the above mentioned ones), but it is preparing for the worst scenario: an attack on North Korea."

How has the Aviationist learned this?

From his station in Amarillo, Texas, author, investigative journalist, technologies expert Steve Douglass heard something interesting. In a message he sent us on Facebook he said:

“Late last night I monitored “DARK flight of seven” on PRIME (311.000 MHZ STRATCOM PRIMARY) asking for current weather for UAM [airport code for Guam - Andersen Air Force Base]. On the frequency of 251.100 Mhz,DARK flight also was calling for “GASSR 11 and GASSR 12? (KC-135s)  for “Tanker drag to BAB [Beale AFB, California]“.

“Dark” is the standard radio callsign for the 7th Bomb Wing’s B-1s based at Dyess AFB, near Abilene, Texas.

Even if U.S. bombers routinely deploy to Guam (where at least two B-2s are reportedly already based), the fact that seven “Bones” were apparently moving together is something a bit unusual, even if they were not going to Andersen AFB (they might need the weather report for UAM because it was an alternate airfield or simply a stopover on their way to somewhere else).

Actually, it’s also weird that some many big bombers were flying together (as the “flight of seven” heard by Douglass seems to suggest) since a standard ferry flight of multiple planes would normally see the aircraft move individually. And, another strange thing is that the pilot talked about their destination in the clear: if they wanted it to be secret, they would speak on secure radios.

Nevertheless, this might have been a non-standard deployment; a move ordered hours after U.S. satellites and spyplanes from South Korea and Japan had spotted North Korean missiles being readied for launch.

What is even more curious is that instead of merely serving as very expensive deterrence props, the squadron has a very offensive role, and is preparing for attack:

Earlier [Douglass] had intercepted an interesting communication off a military satellite in which an Ellsworth AFB’s B-1B, callsign “Slam 1?, was training to hit a “missile facility” in Snyder, Texas.

A practice run for a mission in the DPRK with a school bus depot standing in for the real thing?

Maybe.

American B-1 bomber pilots have reportedly shifted their training programs, focusing on in East Asia, more than Afghanistan and the Middle East. And, above all, any training mission has many similarities with actual sorties that would be flown against a real enemy in combat.

Anyway, Douglass has recorded an audio snippet of the exercise (available here). Based on the coordinates for Snyder, Texas here‘s the target on Google Maps.

Finally, and most disturbing, is that another aircraft also in the process of deployment is none other than the E-6 Mercury "Doomsday" plane, which are among the pinnacle in US Airforce nuclear war preparedness, tasked with "providing command and control of U.S. nuclear forces should ground-based control become inoperable" and whose core functions include conveying instructions from the National Command Authority to fleet ballistic missile submarines and also to further command post capabilities and control of land-based missiles and nuclear-armed bombers.

You can read more about the military air activity recently monitored by Steve Douglass in an extremely interesting article he posted on his blog that not only summarize the contents of the messages he sent to The Aviationist, but provides some more details about the alleged overseas deployment of E-6 Mercury “doomsday” planes from Tinker AFB, Oklahoma.

Perhaps to Kim Jong-un the military escalation to nuclear war is only one big joke, but to the US it is increasingly appearing very serious. And perhaps this is precisely what the Pentagon wanted all along?

Korean War #2 or WWIII or MenWithTinyPenis-capades, no matter what happens it's bad. In my opinion the US can not approach this in any type of acceptable manner, as we will be looked at and attacked more so than we are now. It's strange to see the odd reactions from Russia and China around this situation, the MSM stating both countries are talking and working with the USA.....while (http://freebeacon.com/russian-bomber-roulette/) that is going on too.

The Castro article was an interesting view point on this situation as well, and right in saying we haven't been this close to a nuclear situation since his debacle back in the 50's.

Guess we can only wait and see how this pissing match turns out for the worse.

General "Buck" Turgidson: Mr. President, about, uh, 35 minutes ago, General Jack Ripper, the commanding general of, uh, Burpelson Air Force Base, issued an order to the 34 B-52's of his Wing, which were airborne at the time as part of a special exercise we were holding called Operation Drop-Kick. Now, it appears that the order called for the planes to, uh, attack their targets inside Russia. The, uh, planes are fully armed with nuclear weapons with an average load of, um, 40 megatons each. Now, the central display of Russia will indicate the position of the planes. The triangles are their primary targets; the squares are their secondary targets. The aircraft will begin penetrating Russian radar cover within, uh, 25 minutes.

President Merkin Muffley: General Turgidson, I find this very difficult to understand. I was under the impression that I was the only one in authority to order the use of nuclear weapons.

General "Buck" Turgidson: That's right, sir, you are the only person authorized to do so. And although I, uh, hate to judge before all the facts are in, it's beginning to look like, uh, General Ripper exceeded his authority.

What happened to Obama's superior diplomatic abilities in dealing with North Korea, Iran etc... as compared to the Bush admin?  That was one of his big boast in his first election that he and Hillary and the gang would be much better, treating these countries with the respect they deserve, at bringing them to the negotiating table and being able to diffuse all of this foriegn relation strife that Bush had created due to his approach to these countries.  You remember how he was going to restore America's reputation in all parts of the globe, especially with the countries that Bush insulted by calling them the "Axis of Evil".   Hillary did warn that we didn't want Obama answering that phone at 3am.  I guess another part "Hope and Change" that we must now hope that the situation changes.

The fat kid with a bad haircut and nukes does not understand the consequences of his actions which could kill millions in the region. He was kept as an overfed House cat.

This is more a problem for China and Russia than the U.S.

Deng Yuwen, the deputy editor of the Central Party School's Study Times journal was suspended last week from his position after penning an anti-North Korea editorial for the Financial Times.

Mr Deng argued that China's relationship with North Korea had become a liability. "Why should China maintain relations with a regime and a country that will face failure sooner or later?" he asked. "Once North Korea has nuclear weapons, it cannot be ruled out that the capricious Kim regime will engage in nuclear blackmail against China," he added.

Learn to play chess, munchkins.

China is North Korea's biggest trade partner, political ally, and aid giver. The old men in the Politburo play two games: public and private. Much like the BIS.

Fred Dickson, chief investment strategist at D.A. Davidson & Co. in Lake Oswego, Oregon, says the disruption could be especially painful for Apple, which counts on Samsung – also a competitor – to produce key parts for the iPhone such as the “flash memory,” the working memory, and the applications processor. According to an estimate in the Economist magazine, Samsung parts count for about 26 percent of the cost of an iPhone.

“If I were Apple, I would be worried,” says Mr. Dickson.

Castro called the situation "incredible and absurd," and said war would cause terrible harm to the people of both Koreas and benefit no one.

"This is one of the gravest risks of nuclear war since the October Crisis in 1962 involving Cuba, 50 years ago," he wrote, a reference to what is known in English as the Cuban Missile Crisis.

The US West Coast is 5,000 miles from North Korea.

You guys have been playing tic tac toe with these four subs ever since 2008.

Well you finally lost one. The Whitehouse knows it, Kim knows it and that's why we are escalating onto a war footing, because one of the Type 033's is somewhere between Hawaii and the West Coast... and no, you cannot track it.

Personally I don't think there will be a flashpoint, but the US pivotting onto a MAD footing is very telling. Do you really believe the US would be scrambling in this way if they thought Kim was bluffing? What about all his other bluffs?

The whole point of nuclear weapons is to "create an environment of paralysing fear", IF one of North Korea's subs is dark and loose off the US West Coast then just how much stress do you think there is in the Pentagon just now?

Because Kim is pushing the USA's buttons and the US is responding by escalating like never before. NK has always talked of war and nuclear strikes, why is the US behaving so differently this time?

A: Because the Pentagon is under stress. Dislikes Kim enormously and does not want to capitulate.

I believe Kim will take it to the very brink and then declare a ceasefire again. But no nuclear strike, he will have already terrified the Pentagon out of their wits by that point, that's why they keep scrambling more jets to Guam, that's all they can do.

1.  Having our nukes go off over N. Korea does not enhance longevity of the nearby Chinese, S. Koreans or Japanese.

2. Given how young the new N. Korean leader is, the march to oblivion against the US will cause a military coup.  Which is what our intel suggests.  A fall of the dictator will lead to a nuclear wind-down, thus denying "unapproved" entities from acquiring backpack nukes.  Which is the REAL intent.

3. Another (subtle but intended) benefit of a looming Asian war, especially a nuclear war, would most certainly put a damper of capital flight from the West to Asia.

1. I make sure that Lil' Kim knows that he is about to lose power, and die, so he'd better Do Something.

2. I make sure that he is confident of his personal survival and the survival of his government, regardless of American reprisals, if he assists in the glorious victory of the Middle Kingdom and the Son of Heaven.

3. I provide him with the EMP weapon.  And the technicians to ensure a proper launch and de-orbit burn.

4. I invade his country with 4 army groups just prior to launch.  He is expecting this: a ruse to distract the Americans.

5. After the EMP weapon detonates, I have my men kill Lil' Kim and his entire staff, and all the technicians who were involved in the strike.

6. I immediately offer aid and humanitarian assistance to the American heartland.  Rush food and electrical generators and transformers there.  Tragically, it cannot possibly be enough.  The United States has been reduced to Third-World status for a hundred years.

7. Explain the new realities to commanders of major American bases in the Eastern Hemisphere.  They can live as rich and powerful men, with their own fiefdoms, into their old age, or they can be rapidly expanding plasma, dying beautifully, like fire before the dawn.

8. Announce the formation of the Eurasian Trade Zone, with my Russian partners.  Invite the Europeans to join.

9. Send an email to King Abdullah, in Mandarin, that says "You're working for me now."

This all seems really obvious to me.

Tell me, my fellow ZHers... Am I a Bad Person ?

"China's Satellite Navigation",... is it ready for real time?

What comes into China's air-space never leaves without being personally and permanently id'd per tracer signal? We're encroaching upon their playground as if it was the early 20th century where america was once an invincible vibrant teenager-- but, those days are long past gone? An irreversible vortex have we created from our unmistakeable avarice, hubris, and world-class bullying, {since the founding of the 'FRB [1913] System' }period! These chinese people have been around for milleniums and  have always? been methodical, and religiously conservative.

Lastly. China has never tried to conquer the world... and, as a matter of fact, not until Mao, which coincidently mirrored the USSR Stalin's remarkable timeline?! They were/have always been passive, and a non-aggressive nation... unless of course confronted by [the fucking Japanese and British,... then again, who havn't the British fucked over-- getting the U.S. into two major World Wars for what?!] foreign tresspasser's.

"The Chinese have always been passive and non-aggressive"--NOT. We wouldn't live long enough to count all the wars fought throughout the history of 'China' (which has never really been a country) but let's start with the one between Mao and Chiang that killed more people than WW II, and then the 1850 Taiping Rebellion that killed more than WW I and II combined. China attempted to invade Japan twice, cruelly occupied Vietnam for over a thousand years, and under the Khan emperors swept over east and central Asia all the way to Moscow (leaving in the city a mountain of human heads) in the most vicious campaign of military savagery ever known. Today the Chinese execute more people than all countries in the world combined, threaten every nation bordering the East and South China seas with annihilation, are commiting genocide against theTibetan, Hui and Uyghur peoples and spend more as a percent of GDP on military expansion than any country in the world.

Nice to see a US halfwit blaming the British for everything yet again.

You DO know that America profited very well thank you from both World Wars - especially Number 2, and you DO know that it was none other than self interest (and the scent of yet more profit) that encouraged your country to belatedly join the Allies in WW2. That, and the rather nasty suspicion that Germany was well on the way to developing a nuclear capability, and the capability to deliver it courtesy of your "Favourite Nazi" Werner von Braun's plans for a 2 stage V2.

Alternatively, delivery would have been via the 6-engined delta jet bombers being developed by the Horten brothers. Light years beyond the crap that passed for the "Best of American" design at that time, and for many years later too I may add . . . . . .

This strikes me as a rather high risk method of testing and destabilizing a young and new leader. Remember the objective is implosion of the NK regime. Kim needs to prove his mettle internally.....especially to the generals, so the thinking would be to provoke him in the belief they will ultimately back down from assured annihilation, and by that time, he has put himself so far out on a limb that he is embarrassed and discredited. Result.....coup or internal turmoil. Perceived as step in direction of ultimate objective

But this is high risk strategy as Kim will feel boxed in with no way back.....he will be forced to make the ultimate attack decision. Assumption would be that the generals will stop him for reasons of self preservation. That is the big gamble.

Fuck this shit.....leave them alone to self implode on their own time scale.

History will repeat with our best hope being to hold a small piece of SE Korea so we can start a counter attack. If we do not have mastery of air, it will be over in a week (as many modern wars are). Yes, I am aware of your point. The US last faced real Anti Aircraft capabilites way back in the skies over North Vietnam. Russian systems proved able to shoot down US aircraft, and so did MIG 21's. But in the long run the US won the ability to keep flying and doing their missions, it was at a loss rate we could accept.

There is a lot of argument over the modern missile versus aircraft. Some inside the services believe that a well integrated mobile system like S-400 and the other missiles which protect S-400, and a large number of decoys to divert the US anti missile attacks, can cause a loss rate that would in the matter of a few weeks to a month make the US losses too high to maintain air control.

This is all very complex. People tend to talk about it in an all or nothing sort of way. But it is about inflicting a certain loss rate that degrades the attacking air force.

Also, the Egyptians delivered a severe shock to the IDF air force on the day the Egyptian army crossed the canal. Over 30 IDF planes lost just over the canal zone, the attacks were called of the next day, and only later as the battle developed did Israel get it's planes back into the battle. In short the Egyptians moved outside their missile cover and then the IDF was able to kill off the armored units.

Much more anti-radar and electronics jamming technology now, compared to 1960's and 70's.

Which would in turn be an immediate prime target for optically guided (air-launched or ground-launched) ordnance.

Of which the Russians have quite a few very effective models.

Worthwhile remembering thet the Chinese are far more chummy with the Russkies than with the US these days. Thet certainly know how to hedge their bets!

Fidel is the only one making any sense right now.

I can just remember 1962.

Actually, I would trust Fidel to mediate this.

This whole situation strongly reminds me of the war that a totally isolated and frustrated Mao entered at the river Ussuri in 1969. He did'nt have any chance to withstand the the Kremlins army. He went all in, and that bluff couldn't be called, so in fact he won. His hidden agenda succeeded: The sovjet union didn't want a second front, so their premier Kossygin showed up, only to be shortly after followed by US-president Nixon.

All american plans to cripple the chinese development of atomic weapons were suddenly brought to halt. The united states became Maos allies against the sovjet union. Kim Jung Uns motivation may be very similar to Maos.

Tom Donilon said that the USA will rearm their forces in the pacific, and that they look out for allies against China. Just Northkorea is not amongst these potential allies. Kim Jung Un noticed that quite well. To the northkorean regime this must sound like an invitation to China, to do with northkorea as it's pleased, after disarming them of course. On the other hand nobody showed any open interest in gaining northkorea as an allied against China.

Northkorea knows quite well, that China will win in the end. It will get to strong even for the USA, and so the USA will cave in, just as they did 1975 in Vietnam. That would render Northkorea a province of China - unless it could defend itself and become a nuclear armed ally of the USA.

So Kim Jung Un knows very well, for whom the bell tolls in the west-pacific, and he estimates correctly that time is running up to position northkorea accordingly.

Just my 2 cents ...

Great theory. The NKorean leadership does hate China because of what they did (try to overthrow Kim Il Sung)... and what they really want is be independant and reunify korea. Anything else is just a mean to achieve that goal.

why wouldn't they just put their nukes in shipping containers and have them delivered under false flag to shipping terminals like san francisco?

Your dangerously nut-case, pathological neighbor who has proven many times that he will not hesitate to kill people has announced to everyone on the block that he positively will come over to shoot you with his new, armor piercing rapid fire. What do you do?

I say nuke 'em first. The Chinese can fill the deficit of 23 million lost NoKo's just by passing out free Viagra and pornography for three days.
