On China's Rising Hatred Of The Japanese, And Why The BoJ Just Doesn't Get It

Tyler Durden's picture

It is becoming increasingly evident that Japan is attempting to use monetary policy to paper over the cracks of imploding foreign policy decisions. The 'storm in a teacup' that has brought China and Japan into fierce rhetorical battles over the Senkaku (or Diaoyu) Islands is having far more deep-seated impacts on the people of the two nations - and implicitly their buying habits. Unfortunately for the embattled Japanese - they are the ones in need far more than vice versa. As Bloomberg reports, discrimination against Japanese is increasingly common in China, as the head of China's Honda plant notes, he’s "never worked in a more hostile place." The dispute over the islands is raising resentment with bars and restaurants showings signs at the door saying, 'Japanese are barred from entering.' "Wherever I go, like department stores or in taxis, people ask me whether I am Japanese," and the reaction can be frosty. Simply put, no matter how cheap the Japanese make their cars by explicitly devaluing their currency, the largest auto market in the world (that of the Chinese) will not be buying; summed up rather bleakly, "I don’t really care about [car] brands,... but there are cars I won’t buy -- the Japanese ones. The reason is simple: Diaoyu."

A sign suggesting no entry for “Japanese” is seen on a notice board posted outside Feng Bo Zhuang diner in Wuhan, Hubei province on April 22, 2013. Asked about the sign, “My boss thinks the Japanese are way wrong on the Diaoyu islands issues, so he decided to put up the sign,” said a manager dressed in a Kung Fu master’s outfit who identified himself only by his family name, Zhong. “It’s also our way of marketing, because Chinese people were all angry.”

Via Bloomberg,

...

Discrimination against Japanese is common in China, according to Yasuhide Mizuno, the head of Honda’s venture in Wuhan, ... says he’s never worked in a more hostile place.

...

Wherever I go, like department stores or in taxis, people ask me whether I am Japanese,”... When he says yes, he said, the reception can be frosty.

Mizuno’s experiences in the city, site of one of the bloodiest battles of the Sino-Japanese war in the 1930s, illustrate why sales for Honda and Toyota Motor Corp (7203). have yet to recover since violent protests across China seven months ago.

...

Japanese carmakers are continuing to lose share in the world’s biggest auto market.

The future of Japan’s car companies in China “is tied to Sino-Japanese relations, and there isn’t much one company can do through marketing,”

...

“I don’t really care about brands,” Chen said as she checked out the gleaming models on display at the Shanghai Auto Show. “But there are cars I won’t buy -- the Japanese ones. The reason is simple: Diaoyu.”

...

First-quarter China deliveries for Honda, Nissan Motor Co. and Toyota (7203) fell even as overall Chinese car sales rose 17 percent. The share of Japanese brands dropped to 15 percent, versus a peak of 23 percent in 2011, according to the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers.

...

Japanese expatriates are still turned away from grocery stores, but not as often as before, he said. The Wuhan Tianwaitian Golf Country Club is always booked when he tries to reserve a tee time, he says, though it’s better than simply being told Japanese aren’t welcome on the course, as was the case a few months ago.

...

“I hope relations will improve so we can have a better business environment.”

...

But with Japanese government officials again visiting the Yasukuni Shrine -- a ritual seen in Korea and China as tantamount to paying homage to war criminals -- the automakers and their employees continue to suffer collateral damage.

...

Mizuno said. “This is a tough time for us to live in China.”

I'm not an authority on Chinese history but if I went through what they went through during the opium wars, the millions of purposefully destroyed lives that it produced and the crappy deals they got from the British & American forces, I might suspect western style living was not all that it was cracked up to be.

China's perverse habit of keeping painful memories on life support, whilst forgetting the details of its own uncomfortable and/or hypocritical actions earn it no respect among thinking, intelligent people.

The Japanese could solve two problems at once, and end up looking like the "good guys" in this tense situation:  simpy apologize for their crimes against the Chinese during the war, and offer the stupid islands in reparation.  If done properly, with grace and sincerity, the amount of goodwill they would generate would probably make them the #1-selling national automotive brand in China for 25 years, and defuse a potential war.

Of course, that assumes that any politician woiuld be willing to do the right thing, instead of the politically-expedient one.

Actually Yogi, you have it ass backwards.

It's the Chinese that denigrate the Japanese as "dwarves" and have considered the Japanese confucian sellouts/not real asians, since the 1870's or so.   China has always looked down on Japan, which is precisely why having their asses whooped repeatedly by Japan on land and sea hurt their pride to such a degree that they simply cannot put it behind them. Pathetic, really.

For 110 years, the numbers stood as gospel: 618,222 men died in theCivil War, 360,222 from the North and 258,000 from the South — by far the greatest toll of any war in American history.

With the coming of the Chinese Citizenism Communautist Party, came the idea of non humans, the only way the Chinese citizenism system found to resolve its inner contradictions. Every human being is entitled to rights, if some are not, that is because they are not human beings, but half-man half-thing.

The atrocities committed against the Chinese by the Japanese were 70-80 years ago. Thats 3 generations ago and since that time the Japanese have been very peaceful members of the world. I think it's time the Chinese get over it and move on, but I sincerely doubt that will happen as the Communist scumbags will do anything to stay in power. If anything, the world should be outraged at how China treats the citizens in their western-most province and in Tibet, as well as their continuing support of the North Korean Gulag.

You have to view this in context.

The Chinese are embattled with all of their neighbors over border or island disputes. A mix of internal politics, needing to give more authority to the equivalents to the Coast Guard and the Department fo Fisheries, plus some idea that they could find natural gas and oil there, China is fussing with Vietnam over the Paracel and Spratly Islands. Go ahead, try to find them on the map. east of Hoi An, they are just dots at any magnification. The Vietnamese parliament is taking none of the Chinese bluster, and they have passed resolutions declaring that those islands belong to Vietnam. Some of the proudest moments in Vietnamese history are memories of defeating China.

The Chinese are even fueding with India over a northermost province of India, fueding with Indonesia and Philippines about sea rights, actively irritating South Korea with support of North Korea, fueding with Mongolia over border issues...antagonistic toward every neighbor they have. It is not in the best interests of China to be this way, but it is just their DNA to squabble. And you thought our State Department owned 'stupid'.

The Chinese whipped up anti-Japanese fervor in the Chinese populace back in 2007. They needed a foreign devil because things were getting tense, and they propagandized against the Japanese. Citizens attacke the car of an ambassador, Japanese property in China was attacked, and ultimately Beijing had to pull in the reins.

This is nonsense from China, but you go try to talk to them. Meanwhile, there is no capital in the Tiger countries and SE Asia that isn't warming up to the United States. Even Myanmar is coming around.

Go visit Vietnam or Cambodia and discover how welcomed, liked and admired Americans are by the folks in the street. No resentment, no issues, rising economies, happy people. Leave the whole Vietnam War behind you when you go, the Vietnamese consider that ancient history, and do you know my cousin who lives in Houston? A completely different experience than the smug decadent miserable drain-circling Zeropeans,

How idiotic to think that a little money printing or some stupid island shifts the sands interms of Sino-Japanese relations.

The Japanese killed huge numbers of Chinese in the 1930's and early 1940's. But the Chinese communist leadership killed even larger numbers of Chinese in the late '40s, '50's and 60's. The Chinese communists need to have an external enemy to divert attention away from their own crimes and the Japanese fill the bill nicely. Also, the Chinese seem to want to flex their military muscles and Japan is looking weak now.

This has nothing to do with the BoJ.

The good ol greatness of humans. It's funny how people go on and on about how amazing the human species is and how advanced or "evolved" it is and yet those in the species show their brilliance with shit like this and of coruse patriotism in general which is one of most asinine things humans do. It's amusing how I am supposed to be conditioned to think humans are so special and chreished (I do not) yet this is the species that will argue and hate each other over some useless islands, not to mention all the other dumb shit humans bicker over with each other. Then of course there is the grandiose view so many people have of that species ignoring the fact a freaking misquito could theoretically wipe out the entire population.

It truly amazes me that the human species has lasted for as long as it has. Based on human nature you'd think they would ahve wiped themselves out a long time ago. If there is by chance a personal god then it would have no doubt been so hands on over time to amke sure the species kept going and I can only assume that same god just gave up and is watching the current world with amusement and disgust.

So because we are examining asian dicks we will need Hubble Telescope to discern which is larger.

I remember the last spat when there were organized protests nationwide and testosterone levels jumped up a bit. After about one week local people were once again wearing Japanese brands, shopping for higher-quality stuff, and stuffing their faces with sushi.

I asked my friend here, "what's with the short-term memory?" She replied, "you still don't understand Chinese people".

Well maybe I don't, but I understand misguided anger when I see it. Come together people.

Selective memory of the Chinese.

The Japanese did some horrible things to Chinese citizens during WW2, but, not to be outdone, the Communist Chinese government should have proven that no one can kill Chinese citizens as well as the Chinese government can.

We're talking about the same country that'll toss you into forced labor camps if you protest against corruption and exploitation. We're talking about the same government that forced college students to "intern" at cell phone factories when they were short handed.

The Japanese are a good distraction for the Chinese government's own issues, but I also got to hand it to the Japanese - they sure it make easy to hate them.

"Country of the setting sun" ? (Hint: the sun rays on their flag have long dissapeared, and what they now have is the moon)
