Sales Of George Orwell's 1984 Have Surged 6884% In The Last 24 Hours

Tyler Durden's picture

In the last 24 hours, sales of the 'big brother' book 1984 on Amazon.com have soared by almost 7000% as the reality of the surveillance state come to the public's attention. As Liberty Blitzkrieg's Mike Krieger notes, we suppose it makes sense that people would want to get up to speed on the dystopian world being constructed rapidly and secretly around them. 1984 is now the 4th fastest rising sales book and 184th most popular on Amazon!

The Centennial Edition 1984 book...

And the Combination 1984/Animal Farm book

Perhaps this tweet sums it up...

+10.

But bear in mind that it is tactically useful to think that TPTB are the masters-of-the-world when it comes to "Leveraging".  They will 'leverage' (lever, ratchet, borrow, steal, usurp) any and all Assets, Ideas and Connections of the Masses.  This includes leveraging Ancient Prophecies & Myths, Literature, Technology, Sci-Fi plots & tech ideas, and ZH ideas.

Anti-depresents in general... something like 11% of the population is on them, though I suspect the number is much higher. Then factor in the % who are on "illegal" mind altering drugs... not to mention what we consume through the food and water supply that we aren't even aware of... We have Soma in spades.

I believe America is experiencing the backside of curve when putting to use the old economic theory of The Law of Diminishing Returns from a technological/societal standpoint.  From the first Big Blue until the initial stages of the internet we were getting great returns concerning productivity and societal issues.  Life was made easier as a whole.  Over the last few years we hit a peak and this latest information pretty much confirms we are in the midst of experiencing negative returns from all of these technological advances.  Sure there are some niche pockets in business/medical/transportation that can still benefit but when looking at society as whole I can't come to any other conclusion.   Now the question is will the authority ever come to that same conclusion (assuming I'm right) and then what to do about it.

I have a feeling the authority/elites will, in the words of Dylan Thomas, "not go gentle into that good night".  Maybe the real question is will the citizens go gentle.  Who blinks first?

Ah yes, life's about to become a real 'Bitch', when Mother Nature makes the two-edged sword of Demographics and Finite Growth swing against you. Those who think they understand math (exponential growth), are about to learn that some equations have what is called a Domain and Range.

For better or for worse, the rich and TPTB are trying to front-run that in their way, the way you are trying to in your way (on your budget and network).  In our case it'll be Survival of the Fittest, and in their case Survival of the Best Leveraged.  Or so they think.

Here's all of his novels for E-readers, via Australia (which the US is bullying atm over the laws it wants in place). I'd recommend "Homage to Catalonia" as well.

Obviously, if you are a Citizen of the USA or a member of the EU you would be breaking your local law to read these within your National Boundary. That is between you and the NSA and the US / EU held copyrighter if you chose to break said law.

The way I see it, feet on the ground (as good ole Simon Black would say) is that kids at 19 are pretty much the same as 19 year old kids of every other generation, except those faced with a military draft.

They are not very political, and they are still very naive (or, 100 out of 100 on a naivety scale).

Friends and acquaintances of mine, closer to 29, are starting to get political, but still naive.

My acquaintances here on ZH are, what 35-55, on avg?  And we are not naive in the slightest, any more.

Give it time.  Help the kids out.  Judging them (as being hopeless) won't help.

Is it because the NSA is more interested in other targets ?

So many people died during WWII, soldiers and civilians, every life lost was tragic and criminal.  So its not that the Holocaust was unimportant, its just that millions of people of every ethnicity and walk of life all were massacred.  The just thing is to treat all the lives lost equally, not to lament the loss of one's own people, at the expense of forgetting the sacrifice of others.

Vonnegut's Player Piano has already been mentioned ... brilliant dissection of corporatism as well as the future Vonnegut saw immediately post-war where first the physically-skilled workers would be displaced, and later even the knowledge workers.

A lesser-known work that is perhaps more relevant to today's situation is Ira Levin's This Perfect Day ... a novel with a cradle-to-grave society that has succeeded in erasing most knowlege of history in favor of a persistently drugged and child-like populace who are essentially fed human chow and Cokes and who no longer use money, instead being informed by computer link whether they can or cannot have a particular item from a store shelf based on cybernetic whim--indeed all of what we would view as choices are instead directed by computer. They also die at age 62 (death panels, anyone?), unaware that their euthanasia is not simply the natural order of things.

It's as if the clone society of the movie The Island has been extended to all of humanity. Naturally to make the plot move forward, the protagonist hears some stories from a grandfather who can still remember how things were before the control grid was imposed, and he accidentally doesn't receive his drugging and thereafter contrives to avoid it.

Good book. Perhaps better at seeing where we're all going than 1984, although lacking the political exposition.

@ Flacorps:

Don't be too sure of your answers. IF you are sure, then: Can you really fault the elitists for their thinking?

I find myself in a moral quandary sometimes. I hate this shit, and everything these people believe. BUT, it's no stretch of the imagination to understand their thinking. They look up to the eptomes of culture......and see dumbasses everywhere they look.

I agree with them, that the world would be better off, if there was a "Great Culling of the Masses"........

At the same time, I do care about other people. We'd be better off, as a species, if people abandoned the idea of "What's cool".

As someone who values high art, high culture, high music....I understand their thinking. It saddens me to see people idolize bullshit.

People are naive, but at the same time, they have been kept in ignorance, misled, and lied to their entire life.

If you are lying to people (as the elite continually are), can you really despise them for believing your lies?

Orwell was a pie-eyed optimist. 1984 arrived in sort of the early 70?s, and ah, Orwell’s vision of a horrible future which was a boot stomping on a human face forever is a utopian image because he assumes there would be resistance and human faces; both of which may turn out to be false.

An excellent commentary on this whole debate is Niel Postman's "Amuzing Ourselves To Death" where he makes the hypothesis that in fact, Huxley's Brave New World is the real state to be on guard for.

For myself, a combination of both, as illustrated by the idea that 60% of Americans don't mind being spied upon, seems to show that the mix is the the future and the problem.

Back to sleep, America! We're on your side! And those that are not? They get the boot to the face.

I think we are still in a Huxley Love Your Servitude phase. Once the laws and brown shirts to implement them are in place we will get to the Orwellian boot phase.

Eventually, one of the masses will think that they are missing something. Something more important than twittering while watching honey boo boo while eating doritos and drinking coke. After questioning a few friends if they feel the same way, a boot will be placed on his neck until the feeling of loss passes.

Hollywood primes us for all of this we just don't realize it at the time.  In the mid 90's Will Smith's "Enemy of the State" and the series currently on the air "Person of Interest" shows us all we need to know of what it is capable at a minimum.

Honestly, some people are just followers.  Maybe even most (i.e. 60%).

Personally, I enjoy hanging out in small groups, and having meaningful discussion (something which I find doesn't happen in groups of 4 or more), while others seem to THRIVE off being in groups of 4 or more, all day, every day.  To each their own!

(in my best Borat) "Ver Nice!"

"DHS, the TSA... are going to be elbow deep in riot control in response to an economic incident. At the same time or close to it, gun confiscation will start. It will start on a voluntary basis using federal registration forms, then an amnesty,"

Same as how gold confiscation would go.  I don't believe the next step could be taken, i.e. prying guns from cold dead hands is unlikely to be efficient.

Interesting.  Normally I'm skeptical about most things, including this content.

But what has me a bit 'bothered', is something I have never seen in the US before:  Significant movements of US Army personnel and gear on public roads.  First on I-90, some weeks ago east of Seattle (a whole battery of Patriot missiles etc), and again last weekend in Bend, OR.  Even my kids commented on this.  WTF is going on?

I just read the 'Privacy' [cough, cough] Policy of my DirecTV account and nearly fell out of my chair.  I almost responded with the following text, but decided to post it here instead:

===

What your 'Privacy' Policy [LOL] is telling us, is that DirecTV does not give a sh*t about our Privacy.  It might as well read:

"You don't have any privacy with us.  We collect everything about you that we can, and then process, store, and sell it to anyone for a buck.  And we give it to the 'Constitution-and-Bill-Of-Rights-raping' bastards at the NSA for free.  In real time.  While you watch us, BigBro@NSA and BigHo@DHS watch you".

Forgive my sarcasm and vivid imagery, but you get the JPG/MPEG.  The point is:  "DirecTV cannot be trusted, and might as well be Big Bro."

Expect your (more informed and privacy-loving) customers to adapt/counter accordingly.

===

p.s. Oh crap, now they're hip to my shows that include Doomsday Peppers, documentaries, Free Speech TV, Military Channel, How Things Are Made, Ancient Aliens, etc.  Note to self:  Must spend time on MSNBC and Fox to really confuse them.  Thank God my wife watches DWTS, Hallmark and Family channels.  But when did she add those porn channels to her profile?  /s

WTF are people going to do when they read the book and figure out the other "1984" type shit the Powers That Be exercise.

Spying -OK, got that one.

Ministry of Truth - Oh shit, got that one, too. And a MSM to support it.

Ministry of Law - Yep They make up shit as they go along, do it in secret, and it doesn't apply to everyone.

Ministry of Justice - Actually don't have that, just Holder.

Ministry of Finance - AKA The Ministry of Fuck-You-in-the-Ass-and-get-bonuses-for-it. Bankers on vacation from WS.

Ministry of Wealth Effect - guess who

Yep. It's like a list of characters who are, or should have been in 1984.
