Edward Snowden: "The US Government Has Been Hacking China For Years", Meet TAO
It's a good thing Obama and Xi met last week, because following the latest revelations by Edward Snowden, just released as part of an ongoing series of interviews posted by Hong Kong's South China Morning Post, there may have been some very awkward silence between the leaders of the world's superpowers. Especially since what he revealed once again exposes the US as nothing but a schoolyard hypocrite bully, which has been spinning a PR campaign "exposing" Chinese hackers as the biggest threat to internet security and privacy, when in reality it was the US that has done the bulk of snooping on Chinese soil.
Snowden said that according to unverified documents seen by the Post, the NSA had been hacking computers in Hong Kong and on the mainland since 2009. None of the documents revealed any information about Chinese military systems, he said.
One of the targets in the SAR, according to Snowden, was Chinese University and public officials, businesses and students in the city. The documents also point to hacking activity by the NSA against mainland targets.
Snowden believed there had been more than 61,000 NSA hacking operations globally, with hundreds of targets in Hong Kong and on the mainland.
“We hack network backbones – like huge internet routers, basically – that give us access to the communications of hundreds of thousands of computers without having to hack every single one,” he said.
“Last week the American government happily operated in the shadows with no respect for the consent of the governed, but no longer. Every level of society is demanding accountability and oversight.”
Snowden said he was releasing the information to demonstrate “the hypocrisy of the US government when it claims that it does not target civilian infrastructure, unlike its adversaries”.
“Not only does it do so, but it is so afraid of this being known that it is willing to use any means, such as diplomatic intimidation, to prevent this information from becoming public.”
If true, Snowden's allegations lend credence to China's longstanding position that it is as much a victim of hacking as a perpetrator, after Obama pressed Xi to rein in cyber-espionage by the Chinese military.
The irony continues because in world in which China suddenly has the moral superiority to an America, that is more reminiscent to the "Evil Empire" USSR from the 1950s than anything the founders had envisioned, it is Russia that Snowden exposes as the country not afraid to stand up to the world's most arrogant bully:
Asked if he had been offered asylum by the Russian government, he said: “My only comment is that I am glad there are governments that refuse to be intimidated by great power”.
Here SCMP reverts to FP magazine to present the NSA's Tailored Access Operations or TAO:
Published in Foreign Policy magazine and called "Inside the NSA's Ultra Secret Hacking Group", the story by Mathew Aid lifts the lid on the US's covert cyber operations in China. The US continually accuses China of cybercrime. However, senior Beijing officials accuse the US government of hypocrisy and allege Washington is also actively engaged in cyber-espionage.
"The Chinese government's allegations are essentially correct," the article reveals. "According to a number of confidential sources, a highly secretive unit of the National Security Agency (NSA), the US government's huge electronic eavesdropping organisation, called the Office of Tailored Access Operations, or TAO, has successfully penetrated Chinese computer and telecommunications systems for almost 15 years, generating some of the best and most reliable intelligence information about what is going on inside China."
When the latest allegation of Chinese cyber-espionage was made last month, it alleged hackers employed by the Chinese military had stolen the blueprints of more than three dozen American weapons systems. The Chinese government's top internet official, Huang Chengqing, responded that Beijing possessed "mountains of data" showing the US has engaged in widespread hacking to steal Chinese government secrets.
Revelations about the NSA's Prism operation from former CIA undercover operative Edward Snowden have added fuel to Beijing's stance, and Foreign Policy's exposé confirms China's claims.
"According to former NSA officials … TAO's mission is simple. It collects intelligence information on foreign targets by surreptitiously hacking into their computers and telecommunications systems, and then copying all the messages and data traffic passing within the targeted e-mail and text-messaging systems," the story revealed.
"TAO is also responsible for developing the information that would allow the United States to destroy or damage foreign computer and telecommunications systems with a cyber attack if so directed by the president. TAO, sources say, is now the largest and arguably the most important component of the NSA's huge intelligence gathering network."
Back to Snowden and his conclusion:
“I’m very grateful for the support of the public,” he said. “But I ask that they act in their interest – save their money for letters to the government that breaks the law and claims it noble.
“The reality is that I have acted at great personal risk to help the public of the world, regardless of whether that public is American, European, or Asian.”
We can only hope that the same public will care.

no one really likes the truth but every

is based on it, so bring it.
"...he knows who and why 9/11."
Compartmentalisation. Only a few know the big picture from the inside.
I think the perps would have to brag about it or something for the information to be captured and visible to our hero.
imo, it's most likely a different kind of analyst with a different kind of access that would have access to 12 year old aka archived data.
We shall see.
Of course, 12 years ago many people like Edward should have been warching and listenning. I guess that's at least part of what the "drill/exercise" was all about.
I already know everything I need to know about 9/11.
CISCO probably has on all routers and all switches and hub a backdoor granted for US government officials.
So, if CSCO has this then that basicly means that there is no privacy at all. Not even with your Proxy as all traffic also goes hrough CSCO routers. Just an idea ;) THINK!
Right. Just don't buy a CISCO router.
It applies to all of the big IT manufacturers, and were not talking commodity hardware, but enterprise hardware of the sort your ISP is running.
Anything that is connected to a network and runs software can have a built-in backdoor.
Nowadays, when most things are implemented as embedded circuits (i.e. a microprocessor plus some software) rather than a bundle of discrete electronic components, most things can have government-mandated backdoors.
So that will be routers/modems (not just business ones, but even the home Wi-Fi internet access points), mobiles phones (not just smartphones), PCs, Macs, Game consoles, Newer TVs, Cell Towers, Newer Cars, Blu-ray and more. Oh yeah, anything which has a USB connection can install a device driver on your computer and thus have access to EVERYTHING.
If the US can get the likes of Microsoft and Google to given them access to bulk user data, why wouldn't it be able to put pressure on any large company with significant US operations that makes hardware (say, Apple or Dell) to have backdoors in its products!?
Frankly, the "my TV is watching me" crowd is probably right nowadays, at least when it comes to Internet TVs with built-in webcams.
(PS: I say this as both an Electronics Engineer and a Software Engineer with some knowledge about IT security).
For many years now, my personal response to this has been to avoid big brands and above all, avoid American brands.
Been in bed with .gov since the beginning.

the NSA is so powerful and controlled by MIC power structure, with ramifications in all three branches of the state : legislative, judiciary and executive, not to mention the fourth estate where it dominates; Media, that it can in fact short circuit even the White House if it feels it is antagonistic to its strategic aims; which represent the interests of the MIC lobby now in total cahoots with big finance; aka Carlyle, KKR and consorts.
I am not saying that is the case today but it could be on specific issues and programs where the WH could have a differnt focus/objective than the MIC. We can see that the partisan divides still exist currently in the corridor of powers of Pax Americana oligarchy.
This guy is striking at the heart of the Oligarchy conspiracy and pointing specifically to the hard facts concerning the use of a smoking gun pointing at the MIC's strategic rival of the age, in this instance : the increasing geopolitical stand off with China; and in the back ground with Russia.
That the people of the world be collateral victims of this power play is evident. For their US american counterparts, as tax payers their contribution is vital to MIC survival and their faith in the power balance is key to this national invasive strategy just like during the COld war days.
Whereas no real threat exists today to US interests; China is its key partner not its military rival. This standoff is thus a unilateral bluff by oligarchy to impose US cyber dominance without taking into account the ethical arm twisting of privacy laws, and sacrifice of liberty rights of billions of humans around the world; totally outside the narrow security mandate of the NSA but nevertheless made possible by the all encompassing misuse of digital cyber ressources and unbridled usurpation of authority beyond constitutional boundaries.
Awesome smoking gun now put on the world table before the eyes of 7 biliion people by Mr Snowden.
Bravo sir!
+1 f.p.
ditto
Exactly, why would China commit suicide by doing something to kill their biggest marginal export market.
China surveils their citizens even more than the usa does. They no doubt cooperate on everything.
True.
falak +^
when you bitch slap an oligarch in a chinese forest does anyone hear it?
enquiring minds need to know. LOL
Chinese State Security agents probably have Snowden under constatnt watch, to prevent any rendering action by the CIA. With these latest details about USA spying on China, the Hong Kong government will take no real action on any attempts to extradite Snowden.
Early on, somebody on ZH called this guy 'Jesus'.
I don't believe in Jesus but I really like this guy Snowden.
Not quite a Neo - but close.
I know the Entertainment/Military/Government/Industrial Complex will use everything in the playbook to discredit him like they've done with the rest.
I just wonder if the sheeples are finally going to get it this time.
But what if the MIC does... nothing?
Neither acknowledges, nor denies... that would be the premier play in my book. I can hear it now, "you don't have a need to know."
An historical examination of US "leadership" depicts such as an analgous fungi Candida; a hungry gutted single celled amoeba; caniverous, souless, parasitical, and destructive disease. Best described as a Cancer; a cancer that is in the hiatus of its final death throes; a "State" in "extremis"; a society that has consumed itself; is feeding on its own children, blind, and with no values. A nation where all its "leaders" are cowards which demand that "truth" be obliterated, and abolished.
The USA was originated as a Constitutional Republic; it is now an out-of-control banana republic where the Law of the Land is corruption and the more the better.
A study in the USA sometime in the '90's showed that ~97% of the Americans believed in lying as good, totally acceptable and appropriate. It was recognised at this time, upon these results that the US was in decline. Where there is no integrity, there can be no coherence and no values.
What has caused this crisis? The answer is that it is the Banking system itself has devoured the values upon which the US was founded; where there is no freedom and no liberty there can be nothing but oppression and the stench of death in progress. That the Banking system itself has been known to be the cause of societal destruction for in excess of 3,000 years, we appoint the uneducated, the liars and thieves; the lowest of the criminals available to government office; the murderers; the genocidists the living dead and the incompetents.
What the world needs today are human beings of values, intergerity, courage, and competence. Too bad that only 5% of humanity consists of such types in probability and few if any would ever be attracted to the zombie jamboree of today's "governments". Let it burn!
Ho hum
This is all very rich. The US is going to expect Hong Kong to turn over the guy because he has revealed that US spies are breaking Hong Kong law? Right.
You're playing it well E. Godspeed, mate.
Never, ever forget that WE are the government. All Three Hundred and Ten Million of Us. The 600 +/- lying and craven employees of ours in Washington, DC are not the government they are our employees. Even the phrase 'The government' has been rendered vague and mysterious over the years.
Those assholes are just the temporary hired help, and they begged for those jobs. And they all swore a solemn oath to the Constitution, which is their public job description, and is really an oath to all 310 million of Us that they will not betray us, their employers. We are the Sovereigns and they absolutely hate that and when they are attacking the Constitution they are really attacking our sovereignty which can never, ever be allowed.
Every bit of any authority they have comes from Us with strings attached that are prescribed and well known in the Constitution. Edward Snowden, 29 years old, is the one who upheld his oath.
Citizens have the right to choose between Fascist Pepsi and Fascist Coke. They like fascist cola, don't disagree there, but even if they didn't, those are the only two choices.

de jure, you are right. de facto we need to work on it.
Attack the 900lb gorrilla! You go first!
"...exposes the US as nothing but a schoolyard hypocrite bully..."
That just about sums it up. Well said.
But with some serious toys...
With an attitude like a 12yold with an Ak-47 or RPG.
I'm saving my money for stamps for my own letters. Screw the government.
Well, they photo the front and back of each envelope, but maybe they don't open them. Yet.
How is it that ZH can manage their own commenting system, but Infowars has moved to FB, Google, Discus for comments?
That one is easy... the most powerful open-source blogging platform in the history of the internet... Wordpress.
Sites that use FB and 3rd party commenting systems are almost invariably ca-ca.
and wordpress takes bitcoins.. sure sign of the devil
A lot of people on infowars are saying the old system, which didn't work well, was Wordpress layout and that is owned by Discus.
22WM, how did you come to the conclusion that sites that use third party platforms "are almost invariably ca-ca"? I can agree with you on that regarding FacePlant. As for Disqus, I am not sure about it either because your comments can transfer between sites. This can be handy however when shit like the following gets re-posted all over the place.:-) ZH's platform is no more secure than anything else out there because the following was pulled from another ZHer last week and I have been merrily spreading it all around the net whenever I can including FacePlant.
Might as well include this in as well... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cgo8sm-gBPU (It's a parody NSA Public Service Announcement)

There’s one thing I’m still unclear about. To what extent can Booz Allen Hamilton and Carlyle use their findings from this spying contract work for other non-NSA related activities? Are there any restrictions? I can imagine much of the information they gather from civilian networks being extremely valuable in the private sector too, giving them commercial advantages over their competition. It would not be unlike the advantage SAC was gaining in the markets from information gathered through expert networks. I can imagine BAH and Carlyle wanting to protect their exclusive access to that information at all costs. It’s potentially a lot more valuable to them than anything they make off their government contract with NSA. If so, is this not also another example of crony capitalism, with the government funding activities that produce huge indirect profits for a select chosen few?
3rd party bribery and extortion comes to mind.
Page 47 of the BAH ethics policy I believe.
Good question. Reminiscent of recent revelations of Bloomberg reporters accessing terminals....
Snowden helps to ramp up the exposure -- the greatest fear of the Narcissist and Sociopath -- but also brings more-quickly-now an awareness of the Control which precludes any "reasonable" solutions.
Said another way...
Snowden tells the world: "it is all corrupt!"
We knew that.
Tyler says: "We can only hope that the same public will care."
And therein lies the real problem, because the public (enough of it now) does care,
but is hitting a brick wall, and that is called Control.
That is why I suggest the attention be placed on the 535.
You will rue the day when you had Control so neatly and appropriately defined, and neglected to remember, er, care in the right direction.
We want the Goods on Dick O!
If he doesn't have them, he may be a fake.
I think it should be considered that Snowden might be connected to the Chinese somehow. It's all true about the NSA but much of that information was already known.
His statements are too quoteworthy & too poetic. Hong Kong is an odd choice and it's also an odd choice for Snowden to compliment China on its respect for free speech. The revelations about the NSA operations in China is a little too convenient. I believe he must be enjoyng Chinese State protection at this time and officially, they are not saying a thing domestically. This is all a little too tailored for the West to gobble up.
Something isn't random enough in how this has unfolded.
so what do you want.. someone from the NSA to just twitter binge from their cube in the middle of lunch?
So, he's a Chinese asset? A mole?
"Something isn't random enough in how this has unfolded."
The move to HK may be very clever and based on expert advice. I saw a reference (trying to find it now) where a legal expert said that the extradition process in HK has some technical legal hitches. These hitches effectively stop any extradition of political asylum seekers for years.
The last time someone held the President's feet to the fire like this, they were plane crashed. Maybe another bird will soon fall from the sky?

Perfect time for another false flag event.
"...when in reality it was the US that has done the bulk of snooping on Chinese soil...."
and by the same token the bush crime syndicate and its cia are the biggest terrorist organizations, bar none, on the planet....
now i am no friend of the chicoms, but the usa is a terrorist nation....it preys upon its citizens, it murders american and foreign leaders, it has as much blood on its hands as adolf hitler because its wall street plutocrat put hitler into power.....the rockefeller nazis are adept at beating the crap out of people without leaving any bruises....
the rockefeller nazis murdered john kennedy.....joseph califano - living piece of shit - along with al haig and cyrus vance constantly spied electronically on jfk and rfk while they were in office....but i am sure it was for "their protection."
Simon Black just offered one of his hidden Inca Palaces for Snowden to shack up in
Simon was at the local Wallyworld today trying on a new pair of shades.
Oh, that kid is Past Tense now. As I wondered in a comment on the German reaction, Now the Chinese have to "Officially" acknowledge it and respond.
It matters not that both Germany and China already knew everything, Now all their respective citizens know too.
We may have reached that juncture when we go from "Everybody knowing it personally, but not acknowledging it to each other" To the state of "Everybody knowing it and having to officially acknowledge to each other that each other knows"
Commonly called "The Emperor is Naked" moment.
Things will be interesting.
i believe a few days ago google put that up on their homepage
This is the government Americans wanted and built during the hysteria of 9/11. As we sow, so shall we reap. This is gonna be a bitter crop.
Rusty - where are u in the multiverse? This is the government Americans wanted
Nothing the american people want is important one way or the other. You are not paying attention.
This pesky internet has to get shut down. Back in the day guys like this would never be heard from......
Edward Snowden is a spy. I believe he concocted this scheme to release documents to the press as a way of gaining (gaming) public support. He was spying for either China or Russia (or freelance). He is a computer geek and he must have seen clues that the authorities were onto him, so he knew he was going to be caught. So he executed a scheme to gain public political support so he would have options for asylum. It was actually very clever of him to do this. Otherwise he would just be another spy who got caught and was sentenced to life. Instead, he has political supporters and could possibly get asylum in several countries.
What are the best clues that I am right? He lied about his salary from Booz. He stole Thousands of TS documents according to the Guardian (WTF Do you know how hard it is to copy S documents, let alone even TS documents in the post Bradley Manning world?). He had some lies about his background. Anyone who becomes a political supporter of Snowden is likely to have egg on his face when all the facts and truths come out.
Dude, they stamp 'TS' on toilet paper reqs.
Really.
Every motherfucker that ever puched a time clock on this planet lies about how much cheese he makes.
If I made 5 mil last year,,I'd still lie like a son of a bitch and say I made 15 mil to give you more to hate on.
So you might want to set that part of it aside, Nancy Drew.
boozy may have lied also. they may have neglected certain
living expenses from the salary disclosure. the numbers are
a distraction from the relevant relational realities, some
times. time/s
oops -double posted
The picture I get: the U.S. hacks into China servers etc, and finds, OMG, their own stuff (blueprints etc) there. Kinda like breaking into someone's home only to find a video of them breaking into your home.
"The TAO that can be named is not the real TAO."
Punk rock! +1
You spy on Xi! I prenty mad, Dick!
How can I make it up to you, Xi?
HAHAHA, grab ankrels and get ready for Xi Dick
Oh, goody!
I sure hope we are hacking and copying as much Chinese info as possible. I'd like to think our guys are competent enough to steal something good from the Chinese. (Wishful thinking???) Unfortunately, the Chinese have a big advantage over the US. Anything they publish only in their own language almost might as well be classified, as there are not enough Americans who can read it. And foreigners who purchase important native Chinese technical documents from Chinese journals usually get cyber-attacked. I've seen a real example of this. There is a Chinese paper in a native Chinese scientific journal 10 years ago describing "the microwave components of the Aegis System", and an American contractor working for ONR Global was cyberattacked as soon as he used a special Chinese credit card to buy and download the article, according to his presentation several years ago. Unfortunately, the only readable parts of the article were the segments that were in English. The USA does not have enough translators to translate a low-priority document like this in a timely manner.
sad as fuck.
I literally heard one of the sheeple milling about me after work (thankfully not FROM work) utter this nonsense:
"it would be better if we had full surveillance everywhere no matter what. It would make us all safer. There'd never be any more kidnappings"
What a supreme dumbfuck.
The smart ones have already figured out the REST of us won't ever get to see the surveillance AND that agencies using it ARE AGENCIES DOING THE KIDNAPPINGS.
Frightening. It's as if the Church Committee never happened
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Church_Committee
Man the fucking NSA trolls are out in full force tonight. What is a matter you fucks, has your domestic spying game been put on hold so now our tax dollars pay you pathic fucks to troll?
Did I call them fucks enough?
Naw... it seems too perfect. Snowden's mannerisms are too calm/collected for the situation he's in. The reactions to all the questions are without any hesitation or even the slightest bit of fear, suggesting a pre-scripted interview and a possible staged event. So what's the real motive for setting all this up? Perhaps he's intentionally being placed by the US gov to spy on, or even plant a trojan, in China's network after he gains their confidence?
When you turn on the lights the cockroaches scramble for the cracks. The most important reason to intentionally disclose is to watch the behavior of those who yesterday didn't think they were being watched. The want to do a guilty behavior sweep. Anyway that's what I'd do if I was a paranoid waster of billions taxpayer dollars.
The stupid meter has been pinned at maximum for days. I hope it is broken, because if the readings are accurate, this country is terminal.
yo NSA, TAO -- is that pronounced with a T or D?
enquiring minds want to know...
From NSA: we'll access a Beijing professor's account for a definitive answer and get back to you.

I wonder what the other hand is doing right now.
Fuck catching him. By now they must want him so dead, it's not even funny.
What's the over/under on him showing-up in a trash bag in a dumpster behind some downtown HK restaurant?
"The CIA tells us Snowden was so distraught by his lies and the crimes he had committed, he shot himself in the head twice, put his body in a garbage bag, and into the dumpster."
Snowden will suddenly develop an auto-erotic asphyxiation fetish. Tragic. Who knew?
snowden must have down loaded private details on lots of people prior to leaving NSA. Imagine that Boehner and Reid have all the details of their lives recorded for future publication. !
