Then And Now: What 100 Years Of Change Looks Like, In One Infographic

Tyler Durden's picture

As we rapidly approach the 100 year anniversary of the Federal Reserve (signed into law on December 23, 1913) and the 16th amendment (ushering in that IRS favorite - the income tax) a question arises: what was life like a century ago? Conveniently, the following infographic breaks down some of the main ways in which life has changed in the past 100 years: from life expectancy, to marriage, education, employment, wages, entertainment, sport, and shopping (we finally find a time when JCPenney was actually popular), all the key ways in which the world and life in the US has changed in the past century are mapped out.

Then vs. Now

"1913: No deodorant, toilet paper, air conditioning, antibiotics, novocaine..."

1913: No crack, rap, meth, abortion factories, or global warrentless surveilance. Freedom of religion rather than freedom from religion. The right to bear arms was still in the bill of rights rather than a justification for DHS buying a billion rounds of jacketed hollow points a year.

Forward!

There was a lot of addiction back then.  It was to patent medicines (which contained alcohol, opium, morphine, cocaine, and cannabis), and other stuff that doctors would briefly think was non-addictive, and prescribe to their patients who are were in agonizing pain.  Then they'd get all their patients addicted.  And then they'd realize that they'd addicted their patients.  But it was too late.  It was horrible.  The rich ones would go to sanatoriums to get over their addiction, but it wouldn't work.  The poor ones would end up dead in alleyways.  The middle class ones would be a humiliating burden on their families, and die young.

I'm not kidding. this is true. about 100 years ago, in japan, they used to have a one inch thick rope tied to both sides of the river hanging  a foot below the water line in the river. and they used to ride it after.

In the 50's, I remember people used fans to keep cool in the summer.  The better off class had evaporative "swamp boxes."  The "rich" American Airlines pilot up the street had central air conditioning (the only actual air conditioning in the neighborhood.)  People took it easy in the heat of the day, drank lots of iced tea, kids played furiously outside and miraculously no one died of the heat.  Hot?  Go to the movies or do your shopping during the worst part of the day's heat (remember "it's 20 degrees cooler inside" signs?.)

Now, if the temp gets above 77, people wilt in misery.

Nation of pussies.

They still make swamp coolers.  We have one.  They work very well in dry climates.  Much cheaper to run than an air conditioner.

Ha ha ha you remind me of an interview I read by a woman who worked in settlement houses (social services) in that era. She said they did a lot of good work but could not convince the immigrant housewives to buy lard, white flour and potatoes in place of olive oil,  macaroni, tomato sauce, garlic,  fresh fruit and vegetables even though they were cheaper and offered more calories per dollar spent.

I still use only a fan to keep cool (air conditioned air makes me sick). ..and in the winter, I just throw on an extra shirt or a sweather. When people drop dead during heat waves these days I can't help but think that heat waves around 1913 did not cause nearly as many deaths as they do now...

The biggest change has been that then over 40% of the population lived on farms and owned arable land - to less than 1.9% of the population now who have land they could grow food on - or the knowledge to do so.

>> I fucking live in the wrong age.

I honestly can't think of a time frame I'd rather have shot my wad in.  I was born in the mid 50s.  I envy and respect my grandfather, born in 1890, but I really wouldn't want to have to have dealt with his hardships.  Anything from tooth aches to heart attacks to infectious disease.  I hate our over population and the pollution and the general disaster humans have been for other living creatures on this planet, but my personal space has been pretty cush.  A very small fraction of the humans to have lived have had anything like the run I've had, and I'm just a low end nobody by today's gluttonous consumption values.

And I sure wouldn't want to be born today, or anytime I can imagine in the future.  I really think we are living in the zenith of human kind and sitting in front row seats to watch the beginning of our slide back into a balance with natural forces.  And, as fascinating as nature is, it is brutal.

My grandfather was born in the early 20th century, got a government job, didn't get sent over for WWII, retired in his forties and chilled in Vegas with his pension until he finally passed away in his nineties.  He was one of the happiest guys I ever knew til the day he died; never a care in the world.

Now here I am, just a century later, watching my country being intentionally destroyed by my own traitorous government--economically, morally, and most importantly demographically--with all likelihood looking like it's all going to hit the fan in my lifetime.

All I tell myself is that it could be worse--I could have been living during the Mongol invasions or something.

And prices should have went down by a tremendous amount due to gains in technology leading to increased productivity, not up. All of the benefits of those technological gains plus some were siphoned out of the economy by the Fed over the last 100 years.

Just imagine if prices would have been going down over the last century and not up. The amount of benefit stolen through inflation from humanity by the government / Fed duo is almost unimagineable, just so they can have the power to redistribute those resources as they please.

It was about 1913 that my greatgrandmother died in childbirth at age 26, having children 7 & 8 (twins).  She was a Yankee girl who had had made the terrible mistake of marrying a brutal Southern army officer.  Yankee men were less inclined to breed their wives to death.

It was a horrible, horrible time to be female, just because of that.  Death in childbirth was *common*.  Many other things were better, but if you're dead it's hard to enjoy them.

I guess all of the ZHers who wish they lived in 1913, are assuming that they wouldn't end up in the trenches inhaling the mustard gas in 1917.

What I miss most about the "old days" is that the countryside was beautiful then.  I look at the photos of the time before the strip malls and the highways, when there were real downtowns built of marble, and picnics by wooded lakes, and feel sad that we're utterly surrounded now by UGLY machine-made crap.  It's an aesthetic loss, but really ultimately a psychic one too.

Who cares about degrees?!

If you had good education in home and surroundings and became at least functional human being without any school than it is much better than creatively crippled, extremely entitled yet barking mad Ph D who has mastered bullshitology. I don't know about exactly 100 years, but from the time outright public schools went through USA analphabetism is in fact now again more common.

It only really shows that people spend way more time in shools.

Same thing about unemployment, it is quite useless without % in workforce and % working less than 1 full time job.

a labourer would expect a minimum $400/week today....

so when the house of cards collapses , PHYSICALLY OWNED gold and silver will revert to the mean $400 silver, $6- $10,000 gold AT TODAYS VALUES , NOT ACCOUNTING FOR IMMINENT HYPERINFLATION

It is like a perfect storm is coming.

US Economy collapses as Obama care destroys the health system, and Obama gets kicked out of office for disgracing the US presidency and everything he enacted over the past 6-7 years as law, is thrown in to question as he was illegitimate as President.

Once heard a comment, not so long ago.....that Obama would be the last president of the United States. Sort of sent a shiver down my spine followed by a "no, could never be"....but I wonder.......The Neo Cons (National Socialists and their Banker partners) go full retard in 2001, and due to events are able to set up the super surrvelience state under the noses of the world, they need more time to put it in place but the "Republican" president is making the natives restless, so they drop in a new distraction, Obama......nothing changes, "he" carries on with the NeoCon policies as he is ordered to do.....as useful idiot in cheif, he will be unaware he is being used, and the left will cheer him on as he is "not bush".....oh, but he is you stupid fucks, he so is.......

When they (National Socialists and the Military Industrial Complex) are done with putting their plans in place, Obama can be ousted and due to the chaos at the time, martial law be brought in over the USA.......and with that, the greatest threat to tyranny the world has ever seen, would be silenced.

I've spent a fair amount of time studying all manner of old photos, and there is a very distinct and obvious difference between those born before around 1940 and those born after. And it's not because the latter were in color.

Through "Better Living through Chemistry," we managed to completely upset the environmental (and specifically hormonal) conditions under which we - and all other animals - evolved, and this explains all sorts of things that have heretofore been relegated to matters of society and culture. For example, there is very clear evidence that females have been masculinized and males have been feminized over the last sixty years. Not just humans, but many many species of animals. Some folks here rant about metrosexuals, but do you really think these kinds of things are under conscious control? All you guys taking Viagra: do you realize the reason you need this stuff is because they are pumping you full of estrogenic hormones like Bisphenol-A? Did you know that DDT is both estrogenic and also anti-androgenic? i.e. acts like estrogen and it inhibits the production of testosterone. So much for those DDT proponents, whom I notice are always male.

As tempting as it is for me to make fun of men that need Viagra, it's not a joke. Sperm counts are dropping around the world (they have declined 50% in 50 years in developed nations), but the thing I find stunning is that men seem to be completely ignorant of this fact. I guess ya'all will be taking your ladies to the local stud to get impregnated once you can't reproduce? Viagra only helps get you up, it doesn't make sperm.

Wake the fuck up.

Yes!!!!  +1000  Thank you!!!!  An excellent summary of what is going on.

Females HAVE become masculinized.  And is is due to a change in the chemicals that we are surrounded by and consume.  Think about it:  why did feminism come into being when it did???  Why didn't you have feminism, at ANY OTHER TIME IN HUMAN HISTORY????  Women have always been as smart as men, and as hard working.  And there has always been *some* decent form of contraception available; not ideal, but something.  What was different about the 1970s???

Duh, in the 1950s; when plastics and other materials were invented and spread far and wide, those women of the 70s were being born.  Their mothers' wombs were flush with all that crap.  The changes persists over generations.  Now we also get it, as geekgrrl says, from BPA  -  they line food cans with the stuff!

I am happy that women can now be scientists and doctors and politicians, and that they can take contraception at will and don't have to marry.  But this did not come about as a result of a *social* change.  It is the result of a human-created environmental chemical change.

Geekgrrl is also right about male sperm counts, and feminization.  Is it any accident that the most brutal cultures (Afghanistan, Pakistan) are the most chemically pristine?  Just wait til they get plastic bottles.  *That's* what we should drop on them.

To add insult to injury, young men are now being sold all sorts of noxious "personal grooming products" that act as a direct delivery system of these estrogenic substances.  My grandmother and my mother and I use(d) no creams or other cruds and little makeup; perhaps that is why we can't compete as well as we might.  Fathers, give your daughters some sunblock with some oxybenzone in it if you want to produce a corporate raider.

I thought it went without saying that men were real men and women were real women just 70 to 100 years back.

I believe that men tend to lag behind or react to women when it comes to these chemical and social changes. What I mean is, I believe masculinzed, domineering women largely appeared before feminizied, submissive men became so widespread. One thing is for sure... you don't see many late night TV commercials for estrogen boosters... only every manner of testosterone booster imaginable.

Sex between the sexes has never been more screwed up or polarizing as it is today. It's my belief that heterosexuals with strong sex drives and an appreciation for old-fashioned roles and manners are a small and perhaps threatened minority. There is certainly a large pool of sexually confused, sexaully lethargic, sexually ambivalent folks out there. My advice? Lay off your hand and lay off the children and go screw a consenting adult.

While your points are true it appears the facts havn't put a single dent in the overall population growth of the planet.

I don't think you have to worry about humans figuring out how to breed because soon we'll have designer babies where parents get to choose how their chromosomes are mixed when producing a child (we already can 'select' based on various genetics with in-vitro etc.).   Hell everyone someday will be able to pick genes from their favorite movie stars, wrestlers, olympians, etc. (I'd like Mels ass to go with Tom Cruises chest, and lets go for J. Long penis in that boy haha)

As to the environment and 'sustainability'.   Most people have a heck of a time balancing a checkbook, or understanding simple directions, and are taking care of their families, parents.  They are either too stupid or too busy to give a shit one way or the other until something hits them directly and even then they typically arn't going to be able to make the connection that B resulted because of action A.   Even if they could their limited publically installed and reinforced belief system would probably force them to dismiss the real truth of fact.

As to Viagra, go for younger women and do the sperm enhancing things, as to sperm stop smoking dope/drugs, lose weight, work out, avoid foods and things that have estrogen like hormones (i.e. eat closer to home, more naturally and try to stay away from foods/waters in plastics).

One thing people seem to really want to ignore is that even the natural foods of today are less full of key minerals and nutrients due to the increasingly nutrient poor soils they live in.  This lack of good nutrients affects the entire food chain bottom to top then heap on the poisons, toxins, GMO, chemical additions, modification, irradiations, etc. etc.

"As to Viagra, go for younger women"

I think this is in poor taste, but I largely agree with most of the other points you've made. As for this particular point, let me again point out that Viagra does not produce sperm. Once the average sperm count goes below a certain threshold, the birth rate will be declining rapidly.

Already many so-called first-world nations have sub-replacement birth rates, and rely on immigration to make the numbers look good. Why do you think the Mexican population has exploded in the US?

1 loaf of bread in 1913

0.05 cents.

1 loaf of bread in 2013 2.20~3.00$ depending where.

The Federal Reserve has increased the cost of bread by about 5900%.

800$ in 1913 = 16000 loafs of bread.

26,364$ in 2013 = about 8800 loafs of bread (I rounded up)

By my logic, you were twice as rich in 1913 as you are now.

Thats not even factoring in that todays bread, isn't even really bread, its some kind of geneticly modified thing thats half the size of a normal loaf and probably 80% woodchips and filler.

you owe your living standard to the progress of technology, which has improved the human condition INSPITE of the Federal Reserves Thievery.

If technology stayed the same as it was in 1913, everyone would be starving and or/dead because of the fed.
