For First Time Majority Finds President Untrustworthy: Obama Approval Plunges Among Young Americans

Tyler Durden's picture

Whatever the deteriorating economy could not achieve (courtesy of Ben Bernanke's relentless bubble blowing and pumping of the S&P 500-driven "wealth effect" distraction) for the past four years, one NSA whistleblower succeeded in a few short days, when earlier today, CNN - hardly a media known for its criticism of the administration - released a new poll according to which not only did Obama's approval rating drop by 8% in the past month, "one of the sharpest, fastest plunges in his presidency" to 45% from 53% (the first time the majority had a negative opinion of the president), not only did the majority find Obama to not be honest and trustworthy for the first time ever in his presidency, but Obama's support with one of his core constituencies - young Americans under 30 - imploded, plunging by 17 points. CNN adds: "That's particularly discouraging heading into 2014 because Democrats have felt they have a lock on the youth vote after the 2012 elections. "The drop in Obama's support is fueled by a dramatic 17-point decline over the past month among people under 30, who, along with black Americans, had been the most loyal part of the Obama coalition," CNN Polling Director Keating Holland said."

Ted Turner's news network adds the following:

The president also dropped 10 points among independent voters, from 47 percent last month to 37 percent. Obama's disapproval among independents jumped 12 points to 61 percent. Again, more bad news for Democrats because those independents are especially important in mid-term elections in which older, more conservative Americans predominate.

The network pointed to several major scandals as evidence for the drop.

"The White House has been under siege over telephone and Internet surveillance, the Internal Revenue Service's targeting of conservative groups, its handling of the terror attack on the U.S. consular post in Benghazi, Libya, and the Justice Department's collecting journalists' phone records as part of the government's investigation into leaks of classified information," CNN reported.

"It is clear that revelations about NSA surveillance programs have damaged Obama's standing with the public, although older controversies like the IRS matter may have begun to take their toll as well," Holland told the network.

The rest of the findings of CNN's poll:

  • A slight majority disapproves of the actions of the man who leaked the NSA documents. A majority of respondents also believe Edward Snowden, who fled to Hong Kong, should be brought back to the United States and prosecuted.
  • Six in 10 disapprove of how Obama is handling government surveillance of U.S. citizens. That's higher than the 52 percent who disapproved of George W. Bush on the same issue in 2006, when government surveillance was also in the headlines.
  • Obama's approval rating on terrorism, although still above 50 percent, has taken a 13-point hit since mid-May.
  • The president's approval rating on domestic issues like the economy, immigration and the deficit dropped by 2 to 4 points, within the poll's sampling error.

So how is Obama responding to the criticism? He is doubling down. From Politico:

President Obama defended a pair of controversial National Security Agency surveillance programs on Monday, arguing it’s a "false choice" to suggest people "have to sacrifice our freedom in order to achieve security."

With polls suggesting the controversy over the NSA programs are cutting into the president's approval rating, Obama stood by the surveillance as a tradeoff that citizens must make to remain safe.

"To say there’s a tradeoff doesn’t mean somehow that we’ve abandoned freedom," Obama told Charlie Rose, according to a transcript of the interview obtained by BuzzFeed.

The president went on to defend the NSA spying as "transparent," while defensively acknowledging that many on the left and right had compared his anti-terror policies to those of his predecessor, former President George W. Bush.

"The whole point of my concern, before I was president — because some people say, ‘Well, you know, Obama was this raving liberal before. Now he’s, you know, Dick Cheney.’ Dick Cheney sometimes says, 'Yeah, you know? He took it all lock, stock, and barrel,' ” Obama said.

Sounds about right. As for this upcoming Charlie Rose interview:

Obama leaned heavily during the interview on explanations that had already been given by the administration to justify the programs. He noted the NSA's role in disrupting a planned attack on the New York City subway system.

"The one thing people should understand about all these programs though is they have disrupted plots, not just here in the United States, but overseas as well," Obama said.

The president declined to comment on Edward Snowden, the former defense contractor who admitted to leaking details of the NSA surveillance programs.

Or just the usual, trite(sic) and true(sic) talking points.

obammy will have his work cut out at G8 with the others breathing down his neck on Prism scamming, and having to play poker with China over Syria and Snowden.

What with Obammy clown in EZ, Barroso, now getting slammed by france in return for his barking on France's media & film veto we may find that Barroso willl have his work cut out to stay top dog in EU.

France has some leeway as Merkel is now in the sprint to September elections so she will keep her mouth shut to reelection.

More realistically, he will be remembered as the president who took the reins of a country with a failing financial system, an auto sector on the verge of liquidation and two wars and did enough to help put us back on stable footing again despite intense political gridlock.

Are things perfect? No, but by the end of his term unemployment will be below 7% (or close to it), the stock market will likely continue to flirt with record highs, our economy will continue to grow at a 2-3% clip and our projected deficit will be a very manageable 2% of GDP.

If things continue on their current trajectory, history will be relatively kind to Obama once it is all said and done.

Mon, 06/17/2013 - 19:49 | 3666355 CaptainObvious
CaptainObvious's picture

Check your premises.  He took the reins of a country (dishonestly and while completely unqualified) with a failing financial system caused by the TBTFs that he chose not to prosecute, an auto sector on the verge of liquidation that should have failed, shoved us into at least three more wars that we can't afford, and did more than enough to ensure that the US will never be able to pay its debt unless we go to hyperinflation or bankruptcy.

The unemployment numbers are all bullshit, revised upward and downward as the week's narrative dictates.  The stock market is rigged and run by the same fuckers who caused the financial meltdown in the first place.  Our projected deficit should be making you shit your pants if you are capable of basic math.

History will be kind to Obombya only if he remains dictator in chief for life.  The winners write the history, after all.

Damaged governments do not "heal".

They are comprised of people and it takes proactiveness and a collective change of mindset on the part of an electorate who want to see things turned around.

Unfortunately, those who are willing to stand up and lead such a change are hamstrung from the start because the system is now stacked against them.

Just getting on the ballot is almost impossible in many States unless there is a "D" next to your name.

Getting any form of objective coverage from the media who disseminates information to the voters is now a joke.

Raising money is out because contributors have been, and will be, targeted.

Even the people willing to work on someone's campaign have to think twice because of the ramifications of such a move.

Even making a phone call now can get you on a list.

As soon good men and women stick their heads up to even speak of change, their souls and reputations are raped by the IRS, DOJ and multiple other organizations hell bent on destroying opposition.

Most people these days think protests are carried out via email, Twitter and emotional Facebook posts (which the politicians laugh about).

This gig is over.

The system is far too gamed.

This post on Reddit was in response to someone who said he didn't mind the privacy invasion:

I live in a country generally assumed to be a dictatorship. One of the Arab spring countries. I have lived through curfews and have seen the outcomes of the sort of surveillance now being revealed in the US. People here talking about curfews aren't realizing what that actually FEELS like. It isn't about having to go inside, and the practicality of that. It's about creating the feeling that everyone, everything is watching. A few points:

1) the purpose of this surveillance from the governments point of view is to control enemies of the state. Not terrorists. People who are coalescing around ideas that would destabilize the status quo. These could be religious ideas. These could be groups like anon who are too good with tech for the governments liking. It makes it very easy to know who these people are. It also makes it very simple to control these people.

Lets say you are a college student and you get in with some people who want to stop farming practices that hurt animals. So you make a plan and go to protest these practices. You get there, and wow, the protest is huge. You never expected this, you were just goofing off. Well now everyone who was there is suspect. Even though you technically had the right to protest, you're now considered a dangerous person.

With this tech in place, the government doesn't have to put you in jail. They can do something more sinister. They can just email you a sexy picture you took with a girlfriend. Or they can email you a note saying that they can prove your dad is cheating on his taxes. Or they can threaten to get your dad fired. All you have to do, the email says, is help them catch your friends in the group. You have to report back every week, or you dad might lose his job. So you do. You turn in your friends and even though they try to keep meetings off grid, you're reporting on them to protect your dad.

2) Let's say number one goes on. The country is a weird place now. Really weird. Pretty soon, a movement springs up like occupy, except its bigger this time. People are really serious, and they are saying they want a government without this power. I guess people are realizing that it is a serious deal. You see on the news that tear gas was fired. Your friend calls you, frantic. They're shooting people. Oh my god. you never signed up for this. You say, fuck it. My dad might lose his job but I won't be responsible for anyone dying. That's going too far. You refuse to report anymore. You just stop going to meetings. You stay at home, and try not to watch the news. Three days later, police come to your door and arrest you. They confiscate your computer and phones, and they beat you up a bit. No one can help you so they all just sit quietly. They know if they say anything they're next. This happened in the country I live in. It is not a joke.

3) Its hard to say how long you were in there. What you saw was horrible. Most of the time, you only heard screams. People begging to be killed. Noises you've never heard before. You, you were lucky. You got kicked every day when they threw your moldy food at you, but no one shocked you. No one used sexual violence on you, at least that you remember. There were some times they gave you pills, and you can't say for sure what happened then. To be honest, sometimes the pills were the best part of your day, because at least then you didn't feel anything. You have scars on you from the way you were treated. You learn in prison that torture is now common. But everyone who uploads videos or pictures of this torture is labeled a leaker. Its considered a threat to national security. Pretty soon, a cut you got on your leg is looking really bad. You think it's infected. There were no doctors in prison, and it was so overcrowded, who knows what got in the cut. You go to the doctor, but he refuses to see you. He knows if he does the government can see the records that he treated you. Even you calling his office prompts a visit from the local police.

You decide to go home and see your parents. Maybe they can help. This leg is getting really bad. You get to their house. They aren't home. You can't reach them no matter how hard you try. A neighbor pulls you aside, and he quickly tells you they were arrested three weeks ago and haven't been seen since. You vaguely remember mentioning to them on the phone you were going to that protest. Even your little brother isn't there.

4) Is this even really happening? You look at the news. Sports scores. Celebrity news. It's like nothing is wrong. What the hell is going on? A stranger smirks at you reading the paper. You lose it. You shout at him "fuck you dude what are you laughing at can't you see I've got a fucking wound on my leg?"

"Sorry," he says. "I just didn't know anyone read the news anymore." There haven't been any real journalists for months. They're all in jail.

Everyone walking around is scared. They can't talk to anyone else because they don't know who is reporting for the government. Hell, at one time YOU were reporting for the government. Maybe they just want their kid to get through school. Maybe they want to keep their job. Maybe they're sick and want to be able to visit the doctor. It's always a simple reason. Good people always do bad things for simple reasons.

You want to protest. You want your family back. You need help for your leg. This is way beyond anything you ever wanted. It started because you just wanted to see fair treatment in farms. Now you're basically considered a terrorist, and everyone around you might be reporting on you. You definitely can't use a phone or email. You can't get a job. You can't even trust people face to face anymore. On every corner, there are people with guns. They are as scared as you are. They just don't want to lose their jobs. They don't want to be labeled as traitors.

This all happened in the country where I live.

You want to know why revolutions happen? Because little by little by little things get worse and worse. But this thing that is happening now is big. This is the key ingredient. This allows them to know everything they need to know to accomplish the above. The fact that they are doing it is proof that they are the sort of people who might use it in the way I described. In the country I live in, they also claimed it was for the safety of the people. Same in Soviet Russia. Same in East Germany. In fact, that is always the excuse that is used to surveillance everyone. But it has never ONCE proven to be the reality.

Maybe Obama won't do it. Maybe the next guy won't, or the one after him. Maybe this story isn't about you. Maybe it happens 10 or 20 years from now, when a big war is happening, or after another big attack. Maybe it's about your daughter or your son. We just don't know yet. But what we do know is that right now, in this moment we have a choice. Are we okay with this, or not? Do we want this power to exist, or not?

You know for me, the reason I'm upset is that I grew up in school saying the pledge of allegiance. I was taught that the United States meant "liberty and justice for all." You get older, you learn that in this country we define that phrase based on the constitution. That's what tells us what liberty is and what justice is. Well, the government just violated that ideal. So if they aren't standing for liberty and justice anymore, what are they standing for? Safety?

Ask yourself a question. In the story I told above, does anyone sound safe?

I didn't make anything up. These things happened to people I know. We used to think it couldn't happen in America. But guess what? It's starting to happen.

I actually get really upset when people say "I don't have anything to hide. Let them read everything." People saying that have no idea what they are bringing down on their own heads. They are naive, and we need to listen to people in other countries who are clearly telling us that this is a horrible sign and it is time to stand up and say no.

We really have no idea how far their abilities go and how far they will go in using them. The brother of a good freind of mine was flying to England a few weeks back. He bought his ticket on line as many of us do these days but the online service would not allow him to print out his ticket. When he arrived at the airport he was pulled aside and questioned. I don't think he thought a lot about it as we all hear the stories about airport security and just assumed he was the unlucky random pick. He was allowed to fly out but upon his return flight from England he was detained again for a more lengthy "interview". As it turned out he was flagged as a potential threat. When he pressed the issue he was told it was due to the fact that he had purchased ammo reload supplies with the same card as he bought the ticket. Now, I suppose the connection here is not a huge stretch, but one can't help but wonder to what degree they abilities to proccess this kind of info. I'm pretty sure this is in part enabled by last years's Consumer Protection Bill that was supposed to protect us from unfair credit practices but also happens to allow data mining of all credit card purchases. This thing runs deep and there is no telling where it will end.

Obama was elected by the young and minorities.

But Obama is just the latest and greatest fuckup since the Great Society was spawned which led to today's debt overhang.

What is amazing is that even during this difficult economic time, there are normal citizens having great success. There are many others having decent success and living fulfilling lives. It's shocking how much opportunity is still out there, in the USA and other countries.

Politicians have been a workaround situation my entire adult life, and while they are worse than ever, they are still just a thing to be worked around. And I'm still doing so.

I've been told since the early 1960's that everything was going to collapse, and that money would be worthless, etc. I was told that there was no difference between Democrats and Republicans, and both parties were conspiring to ruin the country.

Maybe so, but they suck at it, luckily. I'm glad I didn't just sit on my butt for 45 years waiting for the collapse to happen. What a waste that would have been.

Yes...I'm not under any delusions that we're headed for a picnic.

Every dog has its day. There are no more Roman emperors, there are no more Mayan priests disembowling people at the top of pyramids, and there are no longer any Egyptian Pharoahs.

Some day soon (and probably sooner than most realize) there will no longer be a Federal Reserve Chairman, or a Bank of International Settlements. No more democratic or republican parties, and no too big to fail banks. These are relics from a time of abundance, a time of pyramid buidling, when the topsoil was thick and the oil wells gushing.

We have now entered the stage where things fall apart. The collapse phase. No amount of printing presses, fraudulent accounting or big media lies can put this pyramid back together. I'm not wishing this upon anyone, but that's where we're at. A cursory study of ecology, statistics, the exponential function and thermodynamics (let alone reading the news) is all one needs to realize with total certainty that we are now in collapse.

The silver lining is that all thes assholes go down with their pyramids! There's not a thing they can do, nothing. Their power to control is depleting right along side their oil and natural gas wells. They oh so want you to think there's a zillion years of oil! and Ben Bernanke is this super smart guy who can make the economy work again by adjusting a few levers.

It's over though, and when you finally get a look behind the curtain, you'll see not powerful rulers of the world, but desperate, insecure, frail little people.

I think we are at the "Emperor is Naked"  part.   We as a culture officially knows everything is fake.

So, Yes,  the collapse for reasons you outlined, has to happen and it will happen, but the pin prick in the balloon is the world wide epiphany or collective public acknowledgement that all markets are rigged,  News is fake,  govenment lies,  and we are in over our heads and it's coming down.

"They regularly increase and multiply the first injuries, till at length the inattentive people are compelled to perceive the heaviness of their burdens.--They begin to complain and enquire--but too late.--They find their oppressors so strengthened by success, and themselves so entangled in examples of express authority on the part of the rulers, and of tacit recognition on their own part, that they are quite confounded: for millions entertain no other idea of the legality of power, than that it is founded on the exercise of power. They voluntarily fasten their chains, by adopting a pusillanimous opinion, "that there will be too much danger in attempting a remedy," or another opinion no less fatal, "that the government has a right to treat them as it does." They then seek a wretched relief for their minds, by persuading themselves, that to yield their obedience is to discharge their duty. The deplorable poverty of spirit, that prostrates all the dignity bestowed by divine providence on our nature--of course succeeds. From these reflections I conclude, that every free state should incessantly watch, and instantly take alarm on any addition being made to the power exercised over them," - John Dickinson, Letters From a Farmer In Pennsylvania:, Letter XI, 1767
