George Zimmerman was acquitted of all charges on Saturday for the fatal shooting of unarmed black teenager Trayvon Martin in this central Florida town in February of last year.
If he had been convicted, the 29-year-old former neighborhood watch volunteer, who claimed he acted in self-defense, could have been sentenced to life in prison for second-degree murder or up to 30 years for manslaughter.
A panel of six women jurors rendered its verdict in the case, which sparked a national debate on issues including race and profiling, after a trial that began in Seminole County court on June 10.

A Florida jury finds George Zimmerman not guilty.
Zimmerman, 29, said he was acting in self-defense when he shot the unarmed Trayvon Martin, 17, in the chest during an altercation in a gated community of Sanford, Fla., on Feb. 26. 2012.
He was not charged for 44 tumultuous days in which the case generated large protests in several cities, turned a hooded sweatshirt like the one Martin wore into a symbol of solidarity, and drew the attention of President Obama, who said, “If I had a son, he’d look like Trayvon.”
As debate over race, guns and Florida’s “Stand Your Ground” law swirled, a special prosecutor appointed by the governor announced April 11, 2012 that Zimmerman was being charged with second-degree murder – a move that his supporters said was meant to quell the public outcry.
Zimmerman pleaded not guilty throughout the case to the charges against him.
When the trial unfolded a year later, prosecutors argued the volunteer neighborhood watchman was a wannabe cop who “profiled” Martin as the teen walked back from buying Skittles at a 7-Eleven, and then followed him against the advice of the police dispatcher he called to report a suspicious person.
“That child had every right to be where he was,” Guy said in a closing argument.
“That child had every right to do what he was doing, walking home. That child had every right to be afraid of a strange man following him, first in his car and then on foot. And did that child not have the right to defend himself from that strange man?”
The defense told jurors that Zimmerman was just doing his civic duty when he was ambushed by Martin, punched in the face and slammed repeatedly into concrete before he fired a single shot that pierced the teen’s heart.
“That’s cement. That is a sidewalk. And that is not an unarmed teenager with nothing but Skittles trying to get home,” O’Mara said.
“The suggestion by the state that that’s not a weapon, that that can’t hurt somebody, that that can’t cause great bodily injury … is disgusting.”
Over the course of testimony, 56 witnesses took the stand, including Martin’s and Zimmerman’s parents, who disagreed about who was heard yelling for help in the background of a 911 call made by a resident of the Retreat at Twin Lakes during the fatal confrontation.
Zimmerman did not testify, but his call to the non-emergency police line, his statements to investigators and even a TV interview were part of the evidence jurors could consider. The panel was also given photos of Zimmerman’s injuries and pictures of Martin’s body at the scene and at the morgue.
Well aware of the passions surrounding the case, soon after the jury began deliberations Friday, the Seminole County sheriff appealed for calm whatever the outcome might be.
"We will not tolerate anyone who uses this verdict as an excuse to violate the law,” Sheriff Donald Eslinger said.

Yup. We saw the same thing out of California. The go-to charge is civil rights violations, since it appears to not be double jeopardy. Zimmerman isn't clear yet.

A great day for the justice system of the United States. With the not guilty verdict of George Zimmerman, the American people can sleep well knowing that the justice system worked in this case, despite the President of the country, through his Department of Justice and his abetting media, inflaming and injecting race into a situation that clearly didn't meet that bar.
Except Zimmerman now has a $million legal defense bill for defending himself against charges that never should have been brought in the first place. So even when he "won", he lost big time. His life is ruined.
The prosecutor got paid his salary and got some great airtime. He will cash in once he goes into private practice.

Allow me to introduce myself. I'm one of the "racists" of which you speak. I was born in Alabama, and I live in Alabama today. I was a child in the civil rights era. I very clearly remember sitting up late at night listening to my father and my uncles discussing the affairs of the day. Back then it was customary for the women to prepare dinner and serve it. After dinner, the women would clear the table and leave the men to smoke and pontificate.
I remember them up late at night when the Federal government deployed troops into the streets. I remember them talking about the Northerners coming South to stir up trouble. I also remember hearing them talk about how "black folks shouldn't have to put up with that - that's just not right" when something bad would happen. They didn't want their daughters speaking to blacks, but they also didn't want blacks to be beaten or victimized.
They weren't perfect, in fact they were flawed in many ways, but they weren't racists. They simply faced a moral quandry. They knew segregation was wrong, but they also knew that eliminating it would have consequences. They just wanted blacks to "stay over on their side of town". The racial issues of the day were seized upon by politicians who deliberately inflamed passions and drove wedges for political gains.
I also remember what black people used to be like. Neat, clean, well spoken. Hard working. Discriminated against unfairly and illegally. Abused and maligned. I remember that a black woman's kitchen was the cleanest place on the planet. Spotless. Black women used to scrub under their fingernails before handling food. You stayed the hell out of a black woman's kitchen.
I remember those that had a black maid - a mamie if you will. She had full permission to whip your little white ass if you had it coming. Ever had a fried pie cooked by an old black woman? I have. They put love into what they cooked.
Under segregation, many black men owned their own businesses because blacks were not welcome in white establishments. Black men owned restaraunts, dry cleaners, barber shops and everything else. They paid taxes, they met payroll, they provided jobs, they supported their families and they served as role models in their communities. And they got treated like second class citizens for their efforts.
Take a trip through Alabama and Mississippi today. Go out into the country. Find the 70 and 80 year old blacks. The ones that lived through the shit. They don't hate white people. They shrug and say "Well, things was different back in them days". Talk to them about not having shoes until they were ten years old. Spend a summer doing construction work with a 60 year old black man that could swing a sledge hammer one handed in hundred degree heat. I have. Get him to teach you how to catch possums to eat. I did. Guess how I got started trapping? But they've moved on. The people that suffered the worst harbor the least resentment. They got over it.
It's the young, thug, government coddled generation that sucks. The young blacks are seething with hatred for injustices they have never experienced. They have been given free education, free food, free housing, free cell phones and free every damn thing else. The Federal government has destroyed the black family.
Blacks today are no longer clean, respectable and well spoken like their forefathers were.
The blacks that fought the Civil Rights struggles think the blacks today are shit - because they are. The niggers of today are light years from the black men of yester year.

But in the 1950s the black churches organized the "Black Deacons" who would show up with shotguns when a crowd of whites threatened a few blacks. They never had to fire a shot in their entire history because the crowds always scattered when they showed up. I love those stories. There is zero evidence that GZ accosted Martin. If the gun had been presented, rather than pulled from concealment only at the moment of reasonable fear of grievous bodily injury, there would have been no punch thrown. The prosecution had the cell phone records and witness testimony before they insisted on a charge of Murder 2, which was egregious. The prosecution knew that when told "we don't need you to do that" GZ headed back toward his car. They also knew that Martin had already proceeded nearly to the back door of his father's home before, for whatever reason, proceeding in the other direction. They also knew that FL law recognizes justifiable lethal force in self-defense even if one threw the first punch, if the other person in the fight makes exit from the fight impossible by blocking the door or sitting on the opponent. You seem not to realize that there was a witness to the fight, a complete set of phone records providing the timing, and one party with no injuries prior to the shooting, the other having many many wounds. You are in danger from muggers. You are not in danger from Neighborhood Watch.
