Foodstamp Nation In Turmoil: EBT System Goes Dark, "Glitch" Blamed
In the past five years it has become apparent that America can survive a near-fatal financial system collapse, an economy teetering on the edge and kept ticking only thanks to the Fed's now perpetual QE, a collapsing standard of living for everyone but the wealthiest 0.1%, declining wages, zero interest rates, surging food, energy, rent, tuition and welfare costs, and pretty much everything else, as long as the welfare state keeps humming along. Any be welfare state we mostly mean providing the daily bread to the nearly 50 million Americans living in poverty and surviving only thanks to the only thing to have exploded to epic record highs under Obama (in addition to the Fed's balance sheet of course): foodstamp usage. However, the true stability of the US may be tested very soon following reports that due to a "possible computer glitch" the Electronic Benefits Transfer System, aka EBT, ala Foodstamps, is offline. Cue mass panic among the best-weaponized population in the world. Naturally, this latest fiasco involving a country that has grown accustomed to sucking on the government's teat was immediately blamed on a "glitch" - just like everything else that is slowly but surely breaking in the New Normal.
CBS reports:
Reports from around the country began pouring in around 9 a.m. on Saturday that customers’ EBT cards were not working in stores. The glitch, however, did not appear to be part of the government shutdown. At 2 p.m., an EBT customer service representative told CBS Boston that the system was currently down for a computer system upgrade.
The representative said the glitch is affecting people nationwide. She could not say when officials expected the system to be restored.
People calling the customer service line were being told to call back later.
State officials said they were preparing a statement to further explain the issue.
The federal EBT website was unavailable due to the government shutdown.
People in Ohio, Michigan and several other states found themselves unable to use their food stamp debit cards on Saturday, after a routine check by vendor Xerox Corp. resulted in a system failure. Shoppers from Maine to Oklahoma had to abandon baskets of groceries because they couldn't access their benefits.
Ohio's cash and food assistance card payment systems went down at 11 a.m., said Benjamin Johnson, a spokesman for the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services. Ohio's cash system has been fixed, however its electronic benefits transfer card system is still down. All states that use Xerox systems are affected by the outage.
Xerox spokeswoman Karen Arena confirmed via email Saturday afternoon that some EBT systems are experiencing temporary connectivity issues. She said technical staff is addressing the issue and expects the system to be restored soon.
As a reminder, this is how many Americans and households were on foodstamps as of the most recent monthly update (hint: a record).

During a routine test of our back-up systems Saturday morning, Xerox’s Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) system experienced a temporary shutdown. While the system is now up and running, beneficiaries in the 17 affected states continue to experience connectivity issues to access their benefits. This disruption impacts EBT beneficiaries who rely on the system for SNAP and WIC. Technical staff is addressing the issue and expect the system to be restored soon. Beneficiaries requiring access to their benefits can work with their local retailers who can activate an emergency voucher system where available. We appreciate our clients’ patience while we work through this outage as quickly as possible.
In short: Cue panic, because while the Nasdaq may be down for 3 hours and only a few vacuum tubes would notice, take down EBT, and you will have a full-fledged revolution in no time.

I'm probably the only one of everyone I know who thinks of these things and tries to warn everybody...unfortunately even with all these warning signs hardly anyone I send this stuff to takes the time to prepare. But I still keep trying to warn them in hopes of getting through to them before the shit hits the fan one day. So below is what I just sent everyone, and will share with you all as well:
And one more thing regarding an event such as this occurring. This is all the more reason to stock up on food and supplies ahead of time that could last you longer than a few days. Think about having at least 4 weeks or even a few months worth of food and supplies.
If another "glitch" happens to the electronic systems in this country it may not only just affect the EBT system. It may very likely affect all electronic transactions as well as ATMs everywhere.
All the more reason to keep your money out of the banking system and stash cash and carry cash just in case you run into something like this and do need to venture out to get anything, food, supplies, gasoline, etc. Cash and silver will be all that will work at that point and you don't want to end up with all your cash trapped inside the banking system and have no supplies for the long haul if you need to stay indoors for a long stretch of time.
Most people don't have more than 3 days worth of food or water in their homes in case of an emergency. Most stores don't have more than 3 days worth of supplies either. And a situation like this won't be like a Florida hurricane coming where everyone has time to go out and prepare and everyone is nice and polite and not in a panic. It will be the exact opposite.
It will be just like today where the system just shuts off and then you're screwed, and that is when the worst in people will come out very quickly. You will not want to be out in that kind of situation trying to find food and supplies.
Prepare for this shit ahead of time and you won't have to go out and do battle against the rioting hordes of the Free-Shit Army who would just rather kill you than help you.

Do you know what will happen the next day? Iraq will strart to trade all of it's resources in currencies different than the US dollar and then you're practically broke.

Here's the main problem as I see it, while there are legitimate people in desperate need who truly depend on the program, there are many more who have abused the system to the point where it's a street revolution in waiting for the inconvenience. There is an irrational belief in America today that government money is completely free, and that peoeple are entitled to it as much as they are to their constitutional rights. At this point, there is no quick and easy solution to reduce the amount of dependancy on the federal government. It is viewed as a God given unalienable right.
What sucks is that there are really unfortunate people who desperately need these benefits for survival, and I have no problem with contributing for this cause. BUT, a clear majority in my opinion, have gamed the system for their own personal benefit, and their advocates will scream bloody murder if any reasonable alternatives are suggested to repair the system. It's the rabbit hole Alice, and we've jumped in head first. The solution is ridiculously simple; match benefits to the immediate need, and gradually reduce them to zero while offering realistic options for independance.
We got a better chance of landing men on Mars before a majority of Americans vote for responsible government in my opinion. And a peoples revolution is the only way this government will function as an independant republic into the 22nd century. Unfortunately, things will have to get much worse before this event occurs, which means bad, bad times are coming for the many. More likely, a dictatorship full of broken promises and empty rhetoric will displace the greatest form of government mankind has ever seen thru suffocating surveillance, systemic propaganda, and physical coercion. Farmers, fisherman, and hunters have been replaced by takers and theives.
Don't just blame the bankers, lobbyists, and politicians for the way things are, blame the people who slept while it happened. This is a good site for introspection, but it's not enough, speak to all your peers and post in every major publication that we will not accept corruption, deceit, fraud, and waste from our government. And then vote accordingly. Educate, inform, and empower fellow citizens that we have had enough. The Demlicans and Republocrats are not the answer, but the problem. YOU ARE THE ANSWER!! When systems like EBT go down, it was probably just a glitch. It just shows how dependent the masses are on 1s and 0s flying around the backbone these days, and how biggger problems will happen later on.

Just a glitch, of course. But a backup system should have been in place that would buffer the impact. Phone lines were also down. I find that very odd. Xerox offered to act a delivery service of temporary cards, and it was nonoperational as well. There is really no excuse for this. Incompetence at best. This could have caused a riot.
