Marc Faber Warns "There Is No Safe Haven"

Tyler Durden's picture

There is no safe haven, Marc Faber tells Bloomberg TV's Tom Keene, "The best you can hope for is that you have a diversified portfolio of different assets and that they don't all collapse at the same time." Bank deposits are no longer safe; money and treasury bills are not 100% safe; and equities in the US are relatively expensive by any valuation metric. However, at around $1250, gold is a buy, Faber adds on the basis of the ongoing monetization of debt globally. The debt ceiling debacle will lead to the Fed stepping up to directly fund the government (something it already implicitly does but mainstream media prefer not to consider). Faber clarifies the idiocy of the discussions, "both parties want to spend, it's just on different things," with "the idiocies of government" having grown way too large, wasting money everywhere... the Democrats are "buying votes" and the Republicans funding the military complex. The debt-ceiling is merely a symptom of the problem, Faber concludes, that "government has grown disproportionately large and that retards economic growth."

Full Transcript:

Faber on gold:

"We have a strong rally form the lows at 1180 to over 1400 and now we are backing off. I think between around 1200 and 1250 it is getting into buying range. The sentiment about gold is very negative, but if you look at everything considered - the monetization of debt, the debt ceiling, which sooner or later will be increased because both Republicans and Democrats are big spenders and the government's debt has expanded from $1 trillion in 1980 to $5 trillion in 1999, now we are at $16 trillion. Both Democrats and Republicans have been big, big spenders because a lot of money flows through the government."

On how he sees the debt ceiling debate playing out:

"If they don't agree by the 17th, I think what can happen is that the Fed will actually finance the Treasury independently so the interest payments are being met. If the interest payments are not being met, I think it will cause quite a bit disruption to the financial market. I am not that concerned about that. I think this larger issue is like the euro issue a year ago where people were very negative and it was debated and so forth. In the end it is a political decision. I think both parties want to spend. It's just on different items that they want to spend money."

On whether what's going on across equities, bonds currencies and commodities, along with the events in US, can be compared to other idiocies by governments in previous decades:

"Yes, idiocies by governments. That is exactly the word. It's basically a dysfunctional government that we have that is far too large that is essentially wasting money left, right and center. The Republicans are wasting money on the military complex and the Democrats are basically buying votes with transfer payments, with entitlement programs, it goes on. It is a huge waste. The problem is that I don’t see a solution. I think the current debate about the debt ceiling and the budget is more a symptom of a problem than a problem itself. The problem is really that the government, not just in the US but other countries as well, has grown disproportionally large and that retards economic growth."

On whether there's a safe haven left:

"There is no safe haven. Bank deposits are not safe, which used to be safe. Money in treasury bills is not 100% safe because there is inflation in the system and you hardly get any interest. Bonds are not very safe anymore because eventually interest rates will go up. Equities in the US are relatively expensive by any valuation metrics you might use. I don't see anything particularly safe. The best you can hope for is that you have a diversified portfolio of different assets and that they don't all collapse at the same time."

There is no god nor can there be. Anyone who 'needs' this is fuckered beyond all hope. That's what happens when what you need can't ever exist.

no, only someone with evidence could make any claim OTHER than what I just made.
Same as with unicorns, leprechauns, teleporting entire worlds or persons or time-travel, the onus is on the claimant to bring proof or the claim (god) is denied.
That's how reality works: you could invent a bazillion concepts with no evidence & none has any reason to believed more than any other, or at all, with no evidence. There is no evidence so there is no god.

Or perhaps you're also entertaining all those concepts, also Zeus and Loki? If so, may I invent other gods too & demand everyone take this absurdity, insanity seriously, until proof is found that there is no such Loki, Zeus or perhaps a real-life heavenly Charlie the Unicorn?

Mark like all good con-artists gives his 'best' ideas away for free.

But at the end of the day his gig is to sell newsletters for $1000 bucks/year,... go ahead go to his website and ask him how much?

If Mark really had something to say other than fleecing morons, he would be saying it, note that his 'truth' never changes, ... its always the same message, you really have to wonder why the MSM keeps him on? Useful idiot?

But look at his message now, ..."NO SAFE HAVEN"

Bull fucking shit.

Put your money in HK, in HKD then you ride the USD, and then the chinese convert your money to CNY the day the USD dies, ... that's a fucking safe haven, and if you were to listen to FABER you would lose everything.

Well shit, ... I just thought that malawa was sort of topical and all, and 'banzai' is like my only hero on this board,...

I find that the muslim women to be sexier than hell, ... Super sincere, I just find Muslim women sexy,... but in reality they tend to be ball-breakers ... but we have a solution ....

I'm only fond of two religions, islam and mormonism, both support the notion that a man should have 4+ wives, and be able to sleep with youngest and horniest every night of his wish,

There is only one real banzai, .. no wait there are many, ... I mean how many 'tylers' are there? 1,000's ...

So go ahead and break my ball's wife #1,... cuz tonight I'm sleeping with wife #4,... :)

Understood ... you got spunk alright ... but why bodyslam Marc, you two probably have a lot in common ... such as a taste for Mia Nois ... if I had to choose a Christian branch, no doubt it would be trailer trash Mormonism ... not the fresh-scrubbed Beaver Cleaver version up here in Concord CA, but the backward-looking kind if you get my drift ... and Islam is my first choice far and away if I had to choose a conventional religious practice of any sort.  Now how many people have I insulted with this post ...

Oh my gawd dude I spent some time a few years ago in Saint George, its the 'summer palace' of Joseph Smith, the founder of Mormonism.

Its near the grand canyon, beautiful red-rock, long story straight the whole town and suburbs these beautiful tall blond's with long blond hair and perfect 38-24-36 full body's jogging on every road,...

Yep, ... these are pure bred girls of Swedish stock that Joseph Smith bred, not some 1/2 bred cali stock working the city,...

Nothing beats a Mormon girl at home in her native town,... out in the sticks and hornier than hell for some non-mormon 'stick', you know the old story the mormon boy has to wear the funny underwear, and these girls dig guys that ain't wearing that underwear,... enough said but make NO mistake that the native village down country UTAH are fucking HOT!

***

We're not really insulting anybody,... Mormons and Muslim men long ago figured out how to 'control' their women, ... what's wrong with that? The problem is the Political-Correct crowd, but fact that nothing more hypocritical than a sour puss lesbian bitch like Pelosi or Feinstein.

Fuck I ran away from CALI 40+ years ago and never went back....

Life is short, ... enjoy beautiful women, good booze, and good food for as long as you can,

In that order I do agree with Faber,... but his message today "NO SAFE HAVEN", ... taken out of context by ZH I'm sure,... but comments are needed that the world is full of 'john galt gulches', where men can be free to fuck and get drunk.

Probably what I hate most about today's AMERICA, it ain't FUN anymore.

But I feel reality needs to be brought to this debate, I mean if Marc is going to set the tone and discussion, then all needs to be brought to the table,

He had his ex-girlfriend machine gunned while her family was made to watch.  Maybe he has Executioner's Remorse, though he did threaten "all out war" again just this past Sunday, so don't give up on him quite yet.  The US is cutting off aid to Egypt until such time as our own Merriam Webster, Bill Clinton, can define the meaning of "coup", and the US is also making nice with Iran so as to stick it to China, Russia (for a Syria quid pro quo) and Pakistan, plus doing something which will be warmly applauded in oil-buying India, and maybe even Japan.

Given that the US in in need of a slam dunk opponent, I'm thinking the people of Equatorial Guinea, with their average 59 IQ, are in the cross hairs.  We've had the Axis of Evil, followed by the Outposts of Tyranny, so maybe it's time for the Way Stations of Wickedness.  Equatorial Guinea, maybe San Marino and Mauritius could be easy victories and help get the confidence back the way Grenada did for Reagan.

If and when the time comes you have the only strategy that will work. This is the guerilla way; the very kind of force that has brought the USA to her knees. Trillions of dollars spent because the Keystone Kops crashed airplanes into buildings and the pursuit of their brothers and sisters continue to suck the juices out of our economy:  'patrols' against 'insurgents' on foreign soil. A wicked and deliciously perverted dance of evil. For one, I only hope that the complete repudiation of the Abrahamic religions is the outcome.

Yeah, we all know how smart you are Mr Market Timer and chart gazer. Some of us prefer older vets who have seen a lot more than you have though.

Richard Russell:  “Bear market?  Sure, back in the year 2000, for only 273 dollars you could buy one ounce of gold.  But by 2012, you needed over 1600 dollars to buy the same one ounce of gold.  The eternal value of gold doesn't change.  It's the purchasing power of the Federal reserve note that has changed.

What is even more remarkable is the fact that most Americans have totally ignored (even despised) this remarkable bull market.  Let a stock rise seven or eight years in a row, and it will be the talk of Wall Street and the talk of every social gathering in the nation. Yet this amazing bull market in gold stands alone, sneered at and almost hated.  I've been in this business for over 60 years, and I've never seen anything quite like it."

PS Bull Markets don't end like this (with no public participation), so you are wrong (my comment).

Yes,

His 1998 book, "tomorrows gold", ... is timeless

In fact you could randomly read any page and reference it today or tomorrow and be correct for all time.

Faber is an economic historian, ... his only failing is his ability to predict the future.

On the past Faber is always right,... on the future he hasn't done so well :)

Tue, 10/15/2013 - 00:40 | 4055038 sablya

Do you know anything about Marc Faber?  He has made many predictions and most of them have been excellent.

Faber got his clients out of the market before the 1987 crash.  He predicted the great commodity bull market, the long-term decline of the USD in 2002 and yet temporary bullishness in 2008. He predicted the stock market bottom in 2009.

Mock what he is saying at your own peril.

Tue, 10/15/2013 - 00:55 | 4055050 banzai401
banzai401's picture

Sheesh I plugged his book, what's a mother to do?

What are the rules here I mean,

It's ok to bash Bernanke 24/7/365,

But god forbid if anybody disses on Faber, or Ron Paul, all the chickens here get their feathers up in a dander?? Why pray tell?

I just speak the truth, ... what is wrong with the truth?

Alas, I think that everybody on this forum knows the USD is going down, that 1997 was going down, that 2007 was going down,... I mean the only folks that don't know this shit was those watching TV.

To suggest that FABER was the only talking-head that saw the 1987 collapse of the stock-market, is sheer non-sense. He's a 24/7 DOOM guy, and sure if you go back 40 years, on some day's the market went down.

Like I said, his book "tomorrows gold" is excellent, ... I just wish his talking-head MSM TV shit was as informative as his books.

Mon, 10/14/2013 - 21:24 | 4054559 banzai401
banzai401's picture

Too much to stomach it is, ... no safe haven my ass.

First of all lets measure a man by his actions, not his words.

1.) Faber lives in chiang-mai thailand, he already has a safe-haven for his ass, but he tells other to remain in the usa and to get fucked.

2.) 90% of faber's wealth is in real-estate held in his thai-wifes name, as ferners aren't allowed to hold title in thailand

3.) 99% of fabers income come from selling newsletter for $1,000 bernanke bucks/year

Now who cares what this man say's,... look at what he has done. #1, ok I can deal with that, but #2 is more stupid than keeping your money in a cyprus bank, and #3, well like pt barnum said "There's a sucker born every minute".

Given that fact's, ... it goes with out saying that money talks and bullshit walks, and that Faber is cash poor.

Where is 'chindit', ... will somebody please explain to w74 what it means that 'no land can be in the name of a foreigner?'

Reminds me of that Shawshank Redemption scene where the guy asked prison chief ... "How much do you love your wife?"

***

In this 'safe haven' all the laws are skewed in the Thai husbands favor, but Faber is NOT thai, ...

In general a woman can only 'get' from a man, that which he is DUMB enough to give her, on the other hand say the USA, a woman can take a man to court and take all.

***

On the other hand, Faber's Gazillion real-estate dollar fortune, if it was in his name, might be perceived by the Austrian government as 'their' fortune, ... I know the US government thinks that way,... a lot of this comes down to what devil do you fear most? The one who sleeps in your bed, or the one that wants to put you in a prison?

It depends where you invest in. Skills like growing and processing own food, perserving your mental and physical health and maintaining, repairing or even building shelter, tools, devices, machines yourself will never become useless. At a certain time its value will go up parabolic.

http://www.amusingplanet.com/2012/08/the-latest-chinese-beach-craze-face...

A new kind of swimwear trend is sweeping the Chinese beaches in Qingdao in eastern China's Shandong province. As the weather get hotter, both men and women are seen appearing on the beaches wearing full body suits that cover from head to toe. The upper part of the swimsuit has a ski-mask with holes cut out at appropriate places to leave the eyes, nose and mouth exposed, giving the wearer an odd Lucha libre look. The Netizens are calling the swimwear "face-kinis”

...

Read on and pics also in the article.

Interesting call by Faber, and a reasonable one. By now the Demtards must a plan ready to go, approved by their Owners, to cover the interest payments. Hence all the entertaining theatre.

Stock up now while they are still available and relatively cheap.

When MSM is spewing nonsense 24/7, having someone come along to contradict it helps reaffirm your sanity, so I'm not at all surprised you appreciate him. He's been beating on the gloom drum for a long time which annoys people, but nobody is going to be able to call the exact time of the collapse with any specificity, and his call is something you'd rather be early than late.

Maybe not prescience as much as being grounded in reality.

Are you going to make me say this?  To hell with worrying about my gold and silver stacks because you have no idea the scope of my guns and ammo stacks.

Ha, I have been waiting for a knock at the door for years now.  For all the shit I have ever said online over the last decade and a half and nothing has ever happened?  Let's go then.  I even created a smartass website to ridicule the state.  Still nothing.  Laughing my fucking ass off here.

I will say this much more; I have kept my target practicing up and I am no where near to being near out of ammo.

I have already fucked enough hot chicks so I am over that.(and a fat one that one night)  I have an "out" for my Russian wife and children because messing with them means you have to deal with a few certian Russians.  That does not mean me.  I have been offered some harbor by the Russians.  That is a tremendous honor in my estimation but I had to decline.  They respect me and probably so because I managed to get TWO children out of one Russian woman!LOL

As an aside here is a short Manipuflation blog on dating Russian Women:  Don't.

If you do not shoot yourself in the head then she probably will.

My fight is here in the MidWest of the U.S..  I am pretty sure that if the Russians backed off then perhaps...just perhaps... it might be reasonable for me to....?

I took a phone call from a Ron Paul guy tonight.  This was a guy I fought through the bullshit with since 2008.  We both became MNGOP officers.  OK.  Well, now what?  Tonight he asked me if I was going to give up now.  He had invited me to this AgoraFest and I had declined.  I just really did not need more bullshit.  I can come up with enough bullshit in my own mind on my own.  I guess it was invite only.  Oops, I did not go anyway.  Out of the conversation I learned that Ron Paulers are turning into something else and it sounded good.  Anything that sounds good to anyone is probably bullshit.

Maybe it is worth it this time?  I thought that last time too.  I trust this guy who is one of 2.5 guys I trust.  Something seems to be brewing again.  Something that is going to try to reinvent itself.  What do you want me to do?  Is this even worth the effort? I know they want me to run for state legislature but I am going to tell you all this, unless you all stand up and start saying something then I do not see any reason to do so.  I have been asked before to run for that shit job.  It's a 35K a year comp.  I'm not rich!  I just do not think it is for me unless you are going to pay to make it happen.

The value of gold and food is measured in fiat dollars, aren't they?

Food and gold were on this planet, available to anyone who cared to look for it.  Women loved gold and diamonds and still do.  Men like to impress women, that is why gold is worth fiat dollars.

When and if the shit hits the fan, men and women need to eat.  How much food will a gold coin buy?  It all depends on how many women the food seller needs to satisfy in order to get laid.

#1 diamonds are not rare or hard to make these days. Just compress carbon gas & you can make high quality diamonds. Any size, any purpose.
#2 the real value of food is the energy & vitamin content, amino acids needed, and how long it will keep.
#3 the real value of gold is what you can use it for, how rare it is and how long it will endure, which is forever.

Some people mistakenly value everything in dollars.
That is a mistake that should be avoided at all costs.
Dollars are forced on us to equal various levels of asset loss or gain, various levels of time loss or gain.
Measure everything in energy, time or in tangibles and you aren't fooled any more.

A bit off thread but relevant for the many posts at zh (bless you tylers). As for the ancient Rome and empire analogies, the Romans canalised mass emotions 'and directing its contents, and often suceeded in transferring to the multitude the responsibility for acts of vengeance which they they had already planned but preferred to execute under an appearance of popular duress'

‘they formed a barrier for autocracy against revolution. In the city there were 150,000 complete idlers supported by the generosity of public assistance, and perhaps an equal number of workers who from one year’s end to the other had no occupation after the hour of noon and yet were deprived of the right to devote their free time to politics. The shows occupied the time of these people, provided a safety valve for their passions, distorted their instincts. And diverted their activity. A people that yawns is ripe for revolt. The Caesars saw to it that Roman plebs suffered from neither hungar no ennui. The spectacles were the great anodyne for their subjects’ unemployment, and the sure instrument of their own absolutism. They shrewdly buttressed their power by surrounding the plebs with attentions and expanding fabulous sums of money in the process.’

Jerome Carcopino, Daily Life in Ancient Rome, (1940).

Read it and weep.

Is any gold changing hands at these prices?

Who in the right mind would sell actual physical gold at 1,250.00 ... very few. Does China actuall get tons of gold at 1250.00 or are they paying something else to geet the physical.

When they sell millions of ounces in a short time...who are the buyers....are they taking delivery, and if so why isn't gold sky-rocketing as they need to go buy the real stuff to hand over....  Makes me wonder if it is just corrupt banks just selling backwards and forwards between each other..

Escaping 'americanism' is no a go in this world. There is no way out.
