Why I stopped worrying and learned to love the currency collapse

For the past 300 years, the historical pattern has been for the era marked by a century to continue into the following century by fourteen or fifteen years.

Let me explain.  Everyone knows that the 19th Century, its uprightness, its optimism and sense of purpose, the halcyon days of British Empire, came to an end with World War I, starting in 1914 and building to a nasty crescendo by 1916.  The 20th Century had arrived, and it had some real horrors in store for us.

Germans before Kraftwerk

But if we return back another hundred years, we notice that the 18th Century ends in 1815 with the final defeat of Napoleon, that final project of the Enlightenment and of the French Revolution.  With the Congress of Vienna in 1814-1815, we have a new Europe along the lines of Metternich's plan, and the 19th Century at last is here.

"Sorry, guys.  My bad."

In 1713 and 1714, we have the Treaties of Utrecht, Baden, and Rastatt, bringing an end to the era of Spain as a major power, and the rise of the Habsburgs.  Louis XIV dies in 1715, after reigning for 72 years.  The Baroque period is over, and we are now firmly in the 18th Century.

War of Spanish Succession

We still live in the 20th Century.  Nothing much significant has changed in our lives in the past twenty years.  Symptoms of a deeper rot are appearing here and there, foreshadowing a larger crisis, but the crisis itself has not arrived yet.  We still live in an era of Pax Americana, the old republic very much a strained and tired Empire now, with the U.S. Dollar as the world's reserve currency.

That is going to change.

The next task for History is to dismantle the untenable structures and institutions put in place by late Modernity, which have been extended now as far as they can go.  Our debt-based monetary system will collapse, our unbacked fiats will be worthless.  The debts and unmeetable obligations will all default.

There are ironies and great contradictions as the former home and hope of Liberty becomes viciously unfree and increasingly despotic.  Our leaders no longer govern, but try instead to rule us -- they are less legitimate with each passing day, their laws corrupt or worse.  They are nearly finished, and will be swept away with the tide.

Just as in 1914, the internationalist system will break down, dashing the hopes of the would-be first-world nations.  We will probably have a pretty good war as well, or many local ones worldwide.  These transitions tend to involve war.

Deflation first -- it clears the way for the complete loss of faith and hyperinflation that will follow.  The next big wave down in the financial markets is the battering ram.  The U.S. national debt is about faith, so is quantitative easing, and so is the very idea of magical coins that could ever be "worth" a trillion dollars.  When this is faith breaks, in concert with loss of faith in perpetual growth and unlimited cheap energy, then things will move very, very quickly.

There is nothing any of us can do at this point, except navigate the rapids as well as possible, and to stay out of the way of a dying empire, which is still very dangerous in its death throes.  We are actually very privileged to be alive and witnessing this next transition, to what we do not know just yet.  But what an honor to live at this time, not in ignorance but with an existential resolve to come out of it alive and much the wiser.

Ass Americana

There are several others who don't post any more. Too bad. Anyone remember Leo who was always humping solar stocks?

RobotTarder was an grade-A asswipe, a troll and a smug  pro-Bernanke, pro-Establishment conformist of the worst kind.  This site is only the better for his absence.

And fighting for the oligarchs, or whichever side promises him more lucre --- that's all that really matters with him.

But no, in fact he is still having breakfast and lunch with various stuck-in-the-past pension fund managers, then bragging about it to whomever he can pin down.

From a Sarajevo War Survivor:
Experiencing horrible things that can happen in a war - death of  parents and friends, hunger and malnutrition, endless freezing cold, fear, sniper attacks.

1. Stockpiling helps. but you never no how long trouble will last, so locate near renewable food sources.
2. Living near a well with a manual pump is like being in Eden.
3. After awhile, even gold can lose its luster. But there is no luxury in war quite like toilet paper. Its surplus value is greater than gold's.
4. If you had to go without one utility, lose electricity - it's the easiest to do without (unless you're in a very nice climate with no need for heat.)
5. Canned foods are awesome, especially if their contents are tasty without heating. One of the best things to stockpile is canned gravy - it makes a lot of the dry unappetizing things you find to eat in war somewhat edible. Only needs enough heat to "warm", not to cook. It's cheap too, especially if you buy it in bulk.
6. Bring some books - escapist ones like romance or mysteries become more valuable as the war continues. Sure, it's great to have a lot of survival guides, but you'll figure most of that out on your own anyway - trust me, you'll have a lot of time on your hands.
7. The feeling that you're human can fade pretty fast. I can't tell you how many people I knew who would have traded a much needed meal for just a little bit of toothpaste, rouge, soap or cologne. Not much point in fighting if you have to lose your humanity. These things are morale-builders like nothing else.
8. Slow burning candles and matches, matches, matches

This is not gluttony.  This is starvation.  When a vital nutrient is missing from our diet, our body will demand we continue to eat until it's necessary level has been sustained.  That is why some people will eat paint chips off window sills or dirt - their bodies are craving potassium or iron, iodine, magnesium.  All essential for other nutrients already consumed to be ABSORBED.

Americans are too vain to walk around looking like this willingly. Diet Industry is a billlion dollar operation.  You may  find a skinny or proportionate girl and it is either because she has a healthy diet or she is on speed.  Girls need iron due to the menstrual cycles.  FFS

Escapeclaws's picture

Good point. Because of soil exhaustion American food is devoid of nutrition and the body's craving nutrition forces you to eat contiuously. In this respect, it is not surprising that there are so many cases of anorexia. If you want to stay thin you have to exit the cycle of eating non-nutritious food alternating with compulsive hunger. Depending on the individual's metabolism, this compulsive underlying craving for adequate nutrition can lead to the results shown. Poor people, who cannot escape bad food and pay for high quality protein-rich food are particularily vulnerable. Proportionally, there are far fewer fat rich people in America. So, interestingly, a good part of the disdain stimulated by this picture is the usual ZH disdain for the poor. The picture was chosen specifically to reinforce the stereotype. Hey, even ZH knows its audience and is moving product...

You don't see as much of this in Europe because they have not exhausted their soil to the same extent with big industrial farms where the soil is supplemented with the bare minimum and the plants are either GenMod or full of pesticide. The exception to this are the anglo-saxon countries where poorer people stuff themslves with greasy french fries cooked in rancid oil.

Bunny and escape, you are absolutely correct. I have a friend who is a diet counselor that specializes in treating the morbidly obese. She told me the common factor is EXTREME hunger. Hunger that normal people never experience. She said the fatter they are the worse it is. Their satiety is all screwed up too. For me at around the fourth bite of food I start to feel full. I rarely ever over eat naturally. For them a big bucket of KFC won't even begin to stop their hunger. The road to a normally functioning body is a very difficult task when it's so far down this path and she told me most don't make it. Their brains are also stimulated by this food. She showed me a brain scan of an obese women eating a donut. It lit up like a Xmas tree! Then she showed me a scan of an elite triathlete eating the same donut. Barely any activity. Obese people have a similar response to this junk food like people on cocaine! Horrible hunger and a cocaine like response. No wonder these people look like they do.

OT. But perhaps interesting?  Historically.  Napoleon and the little corporal were magnificent for British power and banking.

Why?

(1) French/British contest in North America.  French/Indian war.  Revolutionary war guided by Rouchambeau, Lafayette, French Navy, push to Yorktown British surrender.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jean-Baptiste_Donatien_de_Vimeur,_comte_de_...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gilbert_du_Motier,_Marquis_de_Lafayette

Then French Revolution, Napoleon rise.  Napoleon sells Louisiana territory to new Americans.  Exchange weakens American financial position, removes French contest in New World.  Gives Napoleon sums to prosecute war in Old World.  Combines Spanish and French Fleets.  Trafalgar kills French Navy.  Leaves Atlantic a British Pond, leaves Americans ripe for invasion.  Waterloo allows banking syndicate to purchase back British bonds at fraction (free market massive tax of unparalleled scope).  This condensation of bonds into one banking entity would never have been allowed were it not a British Policy. (Red Shield would've been assassinated and all possessions confiscated if acted alone).  War 1812, burning of Washington capitol, reintroduction of British led banking cartel to control New world finance.  Conquer without stationing troops and without widespread knowledge by chattel.

When one is a small island nation without global competetive advantage, one must contrive a new formula or die.  Thus, banking feudalism transplanted to new world.  Big Win for Union Jack.  Destruction of perennial enemy (France), destruction of only competetive fleet, freehand in navigation, reconquering of new world, retirement of almost millenial debt by other means.

(2) Germany.  Emergent global power in 19th, 20th century.  German/British bankers seeing decline move over pond.  Establish central bank franchise/concession.  Financial shift.  German fleet insignificant.  Submariners make asymmetrical warfare possible, molest shipping, british navy.

Major mistakes.  Encirclement of Dunkirk.  German forces should have captured/killed BEF.  Not doing so preserved military middle management and battle tested line.  Unbelievable, unforgiveable.  Taking France in 6 weeks destroys them as global power.  Allowing Vichy a contorted policy.  Germany should have quickly seized French fleet (did not) allowed its destruction by British at Mers-el-Kebir. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_the_French_Navy#Destruction_of_t... .  Loss of greatest capture of military tools in global history.  Then with Britain only 16 miles away, German attempt at crossing (protected by fleet of uboats) and capturing the ISLE foregone, token Battle of Britain with paper airplane fight.  Doing so would capture all factories, wealth, fleet, and conscriptable men.  Consolidation of power.  NOT DONE.  Turned instead to Russia under worse weather than Napoleon, destroyed nation's fighting force there allowing Anglo-American threat to build to overwhelming strength.  Defeat left all of Europe (Germany & France foremost) open to imposition of A&A philosophy and banking.  Killed continental superpowers.  Left the east bereft of alliances, pushed Nippon to easy defeat.  Pacific & Atlantic A&A fleet reigns supreme. Uncontested winner of 19th & 20th Century wars, Britain and their Igor (USA).  Open fields wherein to impose one's will through politics and finance.

Yes, no better agents for Norman-Saxon Royals than those two smallish men who commanded now extinguished national powers.

What other nations are presently poorly led by smallish men?  Into the lion's den, my friend.  The land, the resources, even the corporations are evergreen but in one generation (40 years) all the presently important steerers & drivers will be pushing up the daisies.

perhaps, though remember how incredibly rich the British upper class was at that time - and became even further. plenty of spoils for 6'000 families to own 60% of the world's assets

And our American Cousins had their own banking system until the Panic of 1907 shook their confidence. though of course NY City is many ways London's sister

Alexander, this all Webster Tarpley or possibly Lyndon Larouche stuff. Webster tends to see the Brits as evil incarnate, as any one can see in reading his book "Against Oligarchy" for free at tarpley.net. The Brits in their history were manipulated by the Venetians, the real source of all that is wrong with the modern world, according to Tarpley. (At least he avoids anti-semitism, though he has been accused of 'latent anti-semitism' by some.)

I find Tarpley fascinating to read as he has extremely interesting insights and an encyclopedic and profound grasp of history. However, I'm in no position to judge the value of what he writes. I do get annoyed when he states things that fly in the face of conventional understanding, such as "Marx was a British agent and disciple of David Urhquart who himself is a product of the Venetian tradition," or words to that effect, without any backup for those who would like to test such a claim.

Recently, he has been claiming that the Americans and the Russians are in fact natural allies and that the Brits, operating through their asset Harriman, persuaded Truman, essentially an incompetant dupe, to fire up the cold war. This was so they could continue to exercise great power on the world stage as part of the 'big three', America, Britain, and Russia, rather than assume a role more befitting the small bereft-of-empire backwater they had become after the war.

Edit: On re-reading your post, I see that it is not Tarpley derived, as it struck me at first. However, I would be interested in any impressions you have of Tarpley's "Against Oligarchy". Meanwhile, can you recommend any books that accord with what you express above?

Increasingly I'm thnking that they protect COMEX and hit other sources like GLD. COMEX lets them manipulate pricing, and it seems like activity has slowed on the inventory drains.

My guess is that if you're not a BB playing the manipulation game, they will make it increasingly harder to participate in the paper gold market in order to protect the system as long as possible. I'd been hoping for a default as well, hard or soft, but at this point I think it just won't be allowed to happen.

So if history is a guide, America has a year or two left.

If China dumps it's US holdings and establishes a new reserve currency of its own next year. Then yep that would be just about right.

The past year of insane stock market gains have been bait to get retail investors to take the hook. The fisherman is getting ready to set the hook, and then there will be no escape.

The bankster class is doing everything they can to make it look like the water is full of prey, without a predator in sight. Giving anyone with a pulse an auto loan, giving kids $100k a year to live off in college. Pushing IPOs up 100% in the first few minutes of trading, making it look like you can get rich in a day off the stock market.

Don't take the bait.

Good link, Tinky. Dovetails with my perception of the dollar as, not money, but a bearer bond with a negative rate of return.

This is why I have a hard time with "deflation" scenarios. Hell, just a little bit of dis-inflation noise created the biggest blitz of dollars in history. Who could have predicted just a few years ago, the Fed injecting $85 billion of these bearer bonds into the system,,,MONTHLY?

Prolly the same crowd who doesn't believe that injection could go to $150 billion, or to save time, directly depositing it into entitlement accounts?

I see it coming down, but not through deflationary conduits. The big "D" comes after the Crackup Boom, with the necessity to instill confidence in the new medium of exchange.

Sorry Tinky, I don't follow this logic, Australia had ~250% GDP private debt and ~0% of GDP of public debt in 2007-08, and ~$21 billion budget surplus, after several surpluses before it.

Why must public debt mirror private debt again?

It looks like a rehash of some of the MMT arguments I've seen ... that all rely on QE to infinity and hope inflation never happens, which is tricky for a place like Japan, where they don't even have energy (forget about fast-breeders now), and material inputs are almost all imported.

BTW, this is just false:

"What our politicians – most of them but crucially not all of them – seem reluctant to understand is that neither the FED nor the ECB nor any other central authority, can limit the amount of debt that is issued into the global markets. "

Sorry, the banks do not have to survive, they should not have survived for this long.

They are being 'bailed-out', mistakenly, and supposedly 'temporarily', tax-payers are being destroyed to 'save' criminal-infested zombies, and that absolutely can and should stop.

"I live for the day that they finally get their due."

Not to be hangin crepe, but that process took 60 years in the Soviet Union. 'Till then, cut out the middle man and work for yourself.

Nothing can stop the American craving for apocalypse. Temporarily bored with raining death on foreigners, Americans are now feverishly dreaming of the collapse of their civilization. Why? Because they need ACTION! Peace and prosperity are for wimps. They want to be really alive, like Walter White. The more secure and prosperous our society becomes, the more desperate the craving for a life and death survivial struggle. Soon these people will start setting their own houses on fire to give themselves an apocalyptic rush.

you know you might be right...

if/ when we ever do achieve the peacful, prosperous and secure society of which you mention we will have to see if your theory holds water.

but since we are currently obviously no where close to that utopian society you outline in your comment I would think the jury is still out...

"The more secure and prosperous our society becomes"...  ah, no, not more secure and prosperous except for the upper 1/10th% perhaps....

Re;  secure and prosperous

it's all relative to the times.   An Ass-Merican on a motorscooter is a sign of properity not seen in most countries of the world.

Throw in the security of the OldFarts on infinite hip-replacment socialist health-care and most of the world would be envious.

Just depend where you are in the pecking order.

That would only work in the Libertarian communities.

The socialist and fascist communities have those pesky govment workers with water hoses that keep those who crave an apocalyptic reset from doing too much damage to themselves or their neigbors.

great post.

but that picture at the bottom...

while relevant to the overall theme some things are always and eternally better left to the imagination.

and that is defiantly one of those things.

The next task for History is to dismantle the untenable structures and institutions put in place by late Modernity, which have been extended now as far as they can go.  Our debt-based monetary system will collapse, our unbacked fiats will be worthless.  The debts and unmeetable obligations will all default.

So we're heading into the Baroque period once again?  HIYO!

If we'd just build another 600+ ship Krugmanian Space Navy, we could have perpetual prosperity again.

All you need is debt debt,  debt is all you need.
