Guest Post: Why I Will Never, Ever, Go Back To The United States

Tyler Durden's picture

Submitted by Michael Krieger of Liberty Blitzkrieg blog,

I have been cursed at a Chinese border. In Dubai, my passport was studied by three veiled women for over an hour and my suitcase completely dismembered. In the Philippines I had to bribe someone in order to get my visa extended for a few days. Borders, they can be tough, especially in countries known for corruption.

But never, ever, will I return to the United States of America.

- Excerpt from a must read article by Niels Gerson Lohman

Recently, one of my best friends from college had a horrific experience at the Canadian border. He told me he would write about his experience and allow me to post it on this site, so I hope to have that up in the near future. In the meantime, please take the time to read the story of Niels Gerson Lohman, a Dutch writer, designer and musician who had such a horrific experience at the border he has vowed to never return to these United States. This is an utter embarrassment and reminds me a lot of one of the more popular posts ever on this site:  Why I’m Leaving America by Michael Fielding.

From the Huffington Post:

After a year of traveling, I had planned a last, short trip. I was going to take the train from Montreal to New Orleans. The travels I had been undertaking earlier this year had brought me to places that were meant to form the background of my second novel.

This trip, however, was for my dad. He, a trumpet player, loved New Orleans and had died a year ago. It felt like the first sensible trip I undertook this year. I had been searching for ways to forget about the last hours at his deathbed. He had been ill for 15 years and his body just would not give up. It was a violent sight. I had decided the trip to New Orleans would put an end to those memories.

The customs officer walked by and asked everybody on the train a few questions. Where they were from, where they were heading. The usual stuff. Everybody who was not a U.S. or Canadian citizen was to head for the dining car to fill in an additional green form.

I had not finished my novel yet, but my passport was complete. It was filled with pretty stamps. He did not like the stamps.

First, he saw my Sri Lankan stamp. The customs officer raised his eyebrows.

“Sri Lanka, what were you doing over there?”

“Surfing. Traveling. My best friend lives there. He is an architect.”

The officer flipped on, seemingly satisfied. Secondly, he found my stamps from Singapore and Malaysia.

“What were you doing over there? Singapore and Malaysia? Aren’t those countries Islamic?”

Looking over my shoulder, his eyes searched for his colleague’s confirmation.

“Malaysia, I think so, yeah. But not Singapore. It’s a melting pot. A very futuristic city. Airconditioned to the ceiling. To Singapore I went mostly for the food, to be honest.”

“Sure.”

“I’m sorry?”

“Nothing. And how about Malaysia?”

I explained flights departing from Malaysia were cheaper compared to Singapore. That I only went there for a few days, but also, a little bit, for the food. The customs officer went through some more pages. Then he found my Yemeni visa. He put my passport down and stared at me.

“What the hell were you doing in Yemen?”

“I went to the island Socotra, it’s not on mainland Yemen. It’s a small island closer to Somalia. A very special place, some call it ‘Galapagos of the Middle East.’ I think 85 percent of the plants and animals there, are indigenous.”

In the five hours that followed, I was questioned twice more. During the first round I told, amongst others, my life’s story, about my second novel’s plot, gave my publisher’s name, my bank’s name and my real estate agent’s name. Together we went through all the photos on my laptop and messages my phones had been receiving for the past months. They wrote down the names of everybody I had been in touch with. In my pirated software and movies they showed no interest.

“So… what’s the verdict?”

“We are under the impression you have more ties with more countries we are not on friendly terms with than your own. We decided to bring you back to the Canadian border.”

They brought me back. In the car, no words were said. It was no use. I was defeated. To the Canadian border they said:

“We got another one. This one is from the Netherlands.”

Yep, you got him alright cowboy. Thanks for embarrassing an entire nation.

The Canadian officer looked at me with pity. She asked if there was anything I needed. I said I could use some coffee and a cigarette. She took my passport to a back room and returned within five minutes, carrying an apologetic smile, a freshly stamped passport, coffee, a cigarette, and a ticket to the next bus back to Montreal.

This ladies and gentlemen, is what we have become.

Those of us Canadians travelling between Canada and the US - often regularly - maybe cheap fuel, dairy - whatever, can attest to the fact that entering and leaving the US are two entirely different experiences.  Entering the US can often include an hour in a stuffy backroom answering the same mundane question over again as to why exactly we would choose to drive six miles to buy cream cheese and eggs... Entering Canada consists of a stern accountant with his calculator at the ready making sure I have declared every possible taxable item - the illegals in the backseat be damned unless they carry a taxable value to the CRA....

The problem with anecdotal evidence is everyone's got some. I just got back from a weekend in Maine, and the border guard going into the US couldn't have been nicer. He smiled, cracked a couple of jokes, and we were on our way in less than 2 minutes. coming home, the Canadian guy asked how long we'd been away, where we lived, glanced at our passports, asked what we'd bought (clothes), asked what we wanted to declare ($150), and sent us on our way, again in less than 2 minutes, and not a penny in duty asked for.

If you travel to Yemen you're more than likely going to get that treatment. It wouldn't have anything to do with the presidents drone program though would it? The one where we create as many terrorists as we get rid of and the one kill list we're all sure to be on eventually for telling the truth about our loss of liberty. The one that's supposed to make us feel safer. The one that looks and feels like stasi.

When will the truth become an act of terror ...

I call total BS on this argument. What percentage of the American population has even heard of these places, or could locate them on a world map? For a border agent to know of them, and the national sympathies or major religions is just unbelievable. Unless he just happened to hit that 1 in a million, savvy, "highly-educated" border guard that proceeded to use that knowledge against the author. Hmmmm... Nope.

I call bullshit on your thought. Last I checked (admittedly it was a long time ago) the TV spews the names of nation states that "hate us for our freedoms" at least every 30 seconds. 24 hours a day. On 30 different channels.

So while they might not be able to find it on a map (no argument there) they are fully aware of the names of these places.

He should quit his bitching and be thankful he didn't end up in Guantanamo. Freedom has it's price. I know they are harassing millions of innocent people-but one day it will all pay off  -someday we just might get a terrorist.

Besides, there are benefits to TSA harassment - fewer people fly, so that means fewer airplanes polluting the skies. Global warming is a serious problem  - airplanes deplete the ozone layer and cause pollution. It's gotten so bad, that for the last few months they even had to cut back significantly on the fleet of planes used to to disburse chemicals in the Chemtrails program-a program which, by the way  -i support. Not sure what they're spraying -or why  -but it must be for a good cause. I truly believe that.

Fighting terrorsim is complicated. Yes, there will be inconveniences to all of us -especially to Muslim loving foreigners like the writer here -but TSA agents are our first line of defense against foreign terrorists who seek to come in to do harm to our Country.  We should support our TSA Troops at our nation's airports.

I gave you a thumbs up because it had to be satire.  Only Butthead could be that stupid.  BTW, it's nanoparticles of oxides of aluminum, barium, and strontium that are the major components to the chemtrails.  Some say there are other toxic goodies added for special effects.  It's conclusively documented that they use military air bases around the planet.  The why is a bigger question.  The NWO always has at least five major reasons for their evil deeds.  Since the chemtrails are starting to kill off a lot of plants in the Pacific NW, some hypothesize that only Monsanto aluminum resistant frankenvegebles will be able to grow soon.  And they are causing people all sorts of respiratory problems.  Make people asthmatic and then kill them off.  As Henry Kissenger put it, "We have to get rid of all these useless eaters."

Why In the World Are They Spraying.

Around 15yrs ago a friend of mine told me he was going to go travel in the US.  I asked him "Why the fk would you ever want to go that gulag shithole?'

That was 15yrs ago - now its about 1,000 times worse.  Its not directly the fault of the American people - but even 15yrs ago I couldnt understand why they didn't have a revolution - now, its beyond sanity what they are complying with.  The UK is pretty much in the same place now as well - time for some global public disobedience in my opinion.

Raise a flag, sing an anthem and bend over for a good hard ass fking.  Seriously, flags and anthems?  Nationalism?  Even after a labotomy I would expect people to be able to see through that kind of crap.  Classification into groups is the most useful method of control ever invented - peer pressure, nationalism, racism, sexism, patriotism, ostracism, ex-comminication and so on and so on - we need more individual human beings who reject all forms of classification - then we might have half a chance.

I have a theory that after the 2008 collapse Americas handlers (Zionist) knew it was all over. They figured that they would pump it up a little and stick the Nigerian in the oval office to take the heat when the ballon pops. Stir up a little race sentiment to keep the confusion and distraction going to help put the natives off the real race that caused it. They didn't have him fucking Rahm in the bathhouse for nothing.

Please, don't give up on the Untied States.

I agree that the Federal Government is totally out of control and led by Socialist ideologues.

The Federal Reserve is running the United States, which is totally unconstitutional. It's like legalized criminals running the country.

But I'm staying in the US, I'm not running away. They are going to have to kill me.

I'm staying and I'm fighting against the criminals.

+1 for "Untied States".  If that was a typo, it was funny as hell, and if it wasn't a typo, it was even funnier.  Now, if only we could untie ourselves from the States.  I'd move to the first state that had the balls to secede.

Cry me a river, like Americans give a shit about foreigners denied entry (we don't) most don't leave.

If 100% of the foreign  population were denied entry America would be a lot better off.

Now there is a stereotype role model Amerikan dumb fuck. When the majority of Americans become like it then Amerika would have arrived at full fascist banana republic status. Fat, dumb, full of guns, and broke (oops sorry got most of those already). Don't worry it won't be long before other countries (except your slave master, Israel) will lose all desire to visit a terrorist nation like yours. Sorry about the failure of your last terrorist debacle in Syria, try again you might do better next time.

Well guess you haven't been around much.

Big world lot of nice people all over.

Let see who make people illegal, that congress that 82% of your countrymen don't trust.
Aha.. governments putting line's in the sand to fight over.
Seems like kind of a con to get the fools to be afraid of their own kind "HUMAN ILLEGALS" OK let's make a bigger goverment because we are chicken sh*ts.
And let pay our higher taxes so we can bomb more country's and stir up more hate and then give more money to  the war machine.

Think about it.. as a human killing each other over space that most at best will  only occupy for less that 8 decades.

But it's better because they told me so.
Got to love ya, kind of like a Democrat defending Obama's killing by remote grandmother machine.

Been in this USA for all 39 years of my life. I have a great job and get to travel to some great places around the world. I'm finally able to afford to take nice vacations to other countries. One thing I have learned in the past few years is the the US is not the best country in the world. It is quickly going down the shitter. No country is perfect, but in general the US has one of the largest income disparities in the world. It is THE most corrpupt, regardless of what some dick on cable news tells you. I'm looking to get the fuck out soon. I've had enough of the bullshit. It a goddamn embarrassment to say you are from the USA anymore.

The UK are paranoid eejits as well. The last time I was there I was stopped and questioned by police at Heathrow for 30 minutes. It obviously was to do with the fact I had a beard at the time and multiple visas from Central Asia (and other places). When the cop had finished I asked him why I was stopped, he said because I 'travel a lot'. I asked him a second time and he said because I 'travel a lot'. Like, WTF?!

On leaving the UK by train I forgot I had a Swiss army knife in the top of my backpack. Even when I took it out and showed them they wanted me to empty THE WHOLE BAG. I almost missed my train because of the time it took to empty, look over my items and re-pack.

Eejits. I won't be going back to the UK in a hurry. I'd hate to think what grief I'd suffer from this idiocy if I had dark skin as well, or a passport from a non-English speaking country.

The Belgian immigration on the other hand were fine to deal with.

My 1st passport is from the USA. I live in Asia. I speak 5 languages. I have lived in 4 countries and been to far more. When I talk with other travelers and expatriates I tell them, the Canadians especially, that I do NOT recommend that they transit ANY USA airport. All I hear are horror stories, and they are all far worse than this tale from a Netherlander.

One can save a lot of money by flying into L.A. airport, but the savings are not worth it when one is treated as this man was.

I fear that soon, the USA and its citizens will be viewed as Palestinians or Mexicans - unwanted visitors, diaspora, permanent migrants moving from one nation to the next.

I thought I posted a couple of weeks back about how Mrs. M and the juniors were greeted at US customs at MSP.  Customs asked for the paperwork that Mrs M and I filled out and had notarized BEFORE they went to Russia.  There was no problem on departure from the US or entry into or exit from Russia.  The only problem came upon re-entry into the US, but not for my Russian wife.  Our children were the "suspects" even though they were travelling on US passports and are natural born US Citizens.

"Where is your husband?" they asked my wife.  She replied that I was likely downstairs waiting for them and I was indeed there waiting patiently.  Mrs. M had to drag out all of the paperwork for the children regarding permission to travel abroad upon re-entry into the US.  Jeebus Fucking Christ these tired children are finally home and you statists retards only NOW ask if they have permission to travel?

Could someone tell me why the customs agents at airports are armed?  To my knowledge there has never been an incident at an airport that required one of those lazy fat foul-mouthed punks to fire at someone. (I can understand arming them at the land border)

Yet they each pack hi-capacity 40s and three full mags. How is this horrific cost justified?

And why do they earn $100,000 to $120,000 a year?

This article comes at a convenient time. I just happen to be in Toronto on business and I am amazed at 1. How clean the city is. I've not seen the squallor like I do in US cities, 2. How nice the people are. Even the cabbies are friendly, 3. How glad Canadians are that they are Canadians.

I'm sure Canada has it's share of asshole politicians, but there is no way they can come close the the politicians in the US. They are the biggest assholes in the world. So I'm wondering if Canada would be a better place to live than the US. Yeah, sure, they pay more in taxes, but look what is happening in the US. Obamacare is a tax according to 5 out of 9 supreme court judges. Even people like me who get health insurance through my company, the rates are going up. Hence, we are being taxed to finance more subsidies.

I think I'm willing to may more in taxes just to not have to be around the fucking idiot US citizentry. Does Canada have 25% of it population on food stamps? Probably not. Stupidity and ignorance do not seem to be celebrated here like the US.

I don't know. I've been feeling like the US is not the place to be anymore. I'm so goddamned disgusted with government and the gimme attitude of the population that if half of my wages are going to be confiscated anyway, at least I would not have to hear about Obama, Nancy Pelosi, John McCain and every other fucking douchebag in Washington DC on a daily basis. Unless people wake the fuck up and bring down the federal reserve and get back to constitutional republican form of government real soon, I may be looking real hard to get out of that festering herpes sore known as the USA.

You may be correct, but not for the reasons you think. Canada has stringent immigration standards and not just anyone can waltz across the border and start sucking the national teat like can happen here. As usual, most of the ones coming in this directions are probably FSA'ers.

Any American without a criminal record and with a college degree can probably get into Canada. Lots are - it's about 35,000 per year recently, vs 10,000 Canadians going south. However, in percentage terms, the original poster was correct.

There's also a percentage of recent immigrants that use Canada as a stepping stone to eventually enter the U.S.  While Canada has pretty stringent immigration laws, the province of Quebec has their own criteria for entry.  If you can speak French, you're much more likely to be approved for entry and from there, they just fan out to the rest of the country.

Since Americans and Canadians are very similar melting pots of people I know it isn't that people are 'better' here in Canada or that our systems are better. It's mostly due to that most of us live in smaller communities and so have slightly retained some sense of community, even in bigger cities. I see the friendliness across small town US too. If I were to live in America I'd choose Wyoming, Oregon, Idaho, Montanta ect and probably feel right at home.

The one problem with your plan is that moving to Canada will not relieve you of your obligations to the USA, which considers you a tax slave.

Other countries tax one on country of residence, not citizenship.

To get free of the taxman, get a non-US citizenship, renounce US citizenship, get legal residency in the Phillipines, which tax only Phillipine derived income and only require you to be in Phillipines for one week every three years.  Then you can live and work in any non-US country.

This process takes time and effort but it is the best investment you can possibly make.  I did it.

This topic touches my heart. Why? Because I have also had too many experieces with returing to the United States from Europe. The customs and immigration thugs I have to deal with are at Minneapolis International Airport, in the heart of the US Midwest. This airport offers me a sweet flight on Iceland Air over to Scandinavia or London, my two most frequent destinations. Arriving in Sweden, I present my passport to a pretty young blond lady with a big smile on her face, she opens it, hammers down with the stamp, snals it shut and passes it to me with a happy little flirt "Oh, you have a Swedish name!", I say "Yes, Grandparents were Swedes." "How nice she says" and draws me into a friendly 5 minute conversation about my family and how I like Sweden" All in all a lovely experience. In Finland they open, stamp, and hand back my passport so fast it makes my head spin. In fact, the passport control lady does not even look at me, just stamps and sends me on.

London is not so fast, but very pleasant. Australia they act a bit tough at first, but them become very friendly once you get a few words with them. New Zealand going through customs is like coming home, all love and handshakes.

THEN WE HAVE THE US of Fucking A. My god these mother fuckers are born again hard ass holes!  I have come to know the worst officials, and I look ahead to see who mine is, I have often jumped to another line to avoid the know nazis. I will not relate the horror stories, I have so many. Let me just say, America is truly a NAZI state. The treatment is worse, than any place I have ever been.

At the Minneapolis Airport a few years back, a group of Finnish Musicians were coming to Minnesota to perform at flok festivals. They were detained at customs, strip searched and interrogated for hours. Accused of being drug runners, then potential terrorists. The one Finnish guy could not stop laughing, which made it worse. After words he said the big bully Americans in uniform were so outrageous that a human could not help but laugh at their bluster and threats. This made all the papers, as they demanded to be allowed to fly back to Finland. They waited in the airport a day and a half, and got an Iceland Air to Iceland and then to London, then on the Finland. They wrote about this in all the Finish Papers, it was a big story over there.

I live in the Caribbean and have family living in Europe. Our customary transit-point was Miami, sometimes Newark. I used to visit the US frequently when I was Manager and (later) a Director of our local Chamber of Commerce. The TSA's excesses changed all that. For two or three years now, I have forbidden my young granddaughters from flying into any US airport - and, in solidarity, nobody else in our family flies through the US either. What a sad situation that is. I wrote about it in my personal blog three years ago (see link below). Boycott is the only way, for transit passengers; there are alternative routes. They are significantly more expensive, but they're much less hassle.

Back in the days before personal computers, I once transited from Canada to Asia through LAX to visit family during spring break.  After a thorough search of my luggage, the border patrol thought they'd hit the jackpot when they found my junior year electrical engineering textbook.  Asked if I was planning on transferring this information to an unfriendly nation, and my reply was yes, if they considered my grandmother a threat.  Probably didn't like my reply but since my layover was only two hours, what were they going to do -- send me back to Canada or on to Japan?  Either way, I would be out of their hair.

My friend was turned down from entering Canada. He's a boardgamer, like me. When he showed (he decided to spend some of his retirement touring the country) up with boardgames in the trunk, back seat, and passenger seat, the guard said he couldn't examine all those games in a short enough time, and turned him back.

Or maybe they have a problem with black market Agricola, Ticket To Ride, and Caylus games?
