A World Drowning In Fatties: 1.5 Billion Of The World's Adults - One In Three - Are Obese Or Overweight

Tyler Durden's picture

While it will hardly come as a surprise that in the age of pervasive, accessible and cheap pink slime fast food, more people than ever are obese, the actual numbers may be a shock to most. Conveniently, quantifying the world's obesity epidemic is precisely what the London-based Overseas Development Institute has done with a just released report titled Future Diets (pdf link). Its findings are stunning: more than a third of all adults in the world - 1.46 billion to be exact - are obese or overweight.

The main culprit: the development world, where the number of obese has nearly quadrupled from 250 million to 904 million between 1980 and 2008. What this means for the world's soaring healthcare costs needs little explanation: "On current trends, globally, we will see a huge increase in the number of people suffering certain types of cancer, diabetes, strokes and heart attacks, putting an enormous burden on public healthcare systems." according to the co-author of the Future Diets report. That's ok, the already insolvent world, drowning in record debt, obviously can afford to spend even more on a record population of fatties.

AFP summarizes the report's main findings:

The study said the rise in obesity was down to diets changing in developing countries where incomes were rising, with people shifting away from cereals and tubers to eating more meat, fats and sugar. The overconsumption of food, coupled with increasingly sedentary lives, was also to blame. The report said there seemed to be little will among the public and leaders to take action on influencing diet in the future.

"Governments have focused on public awareness campaigns, but evidence shows this is not enough," said Wiggins.

"The lack of action stands in stark contrast to the concerted public actions taken to limit smoking in developed countries.

"Politicians need to be less shy about trying to influence what food ends up on our plates. The challenge is to make healthy diets viable whilst reducing the appeal of foods which carry a less certain nutritional value."

Below are the report's key findings straight from the horse's mouth:

  • Over one third of all adults across the world – 1.46 billion people – are obese or overweight. Between 1980 and 2008, the numbers of people affected in the developing world more than tripled, from 250 million to 904 million. In high-income countries the numbers increased by 1.7 times over the same period.
  • Diets are changing wherever incomes are rising in the developing world, with a marked shift from cereals and tubers to meat, fats and sugar, as well as fruit and vegetables.
  • While the forces of globalisation have led to a creeping homogenisation in diets, their continued variation suggests that there is still scope for policies that can influence the food choices that people make.
  • Future diets that are rich in animal products, especially meat, will push up prices for meat, but surprisingly, not for grains. This suggests that future diets may matter more for public health than for agriculture.
  • There seems to be little will among public and leaders to take the determined action that is needed to influence future diets, but that may change in the face of the serious health implications. Combinations of moderate measures in education, prices and regulation may achieve far more than drastic action of any one type.

Some other pretty charts from the report:

So, in other words, as long as the overweight world can eat its cake, and have others pay for the diabetes medication fees, all is well. However, once this too unsustainable ponzi scheme ends, run. Or at least jog casually away, because one doesn't have to outrun everyone... just the fattest. And there are a lot of those around.

Any type of medication for high blood pressure or type 2 diabetes requires the patient also make significant changes in their diet and excercise regimen. Medications and surgeries alone will not save their lives. Yes they are going to present a very high cost to any medical care system but those that don't get with the program are not going to survive very long anyway.

there is no doubt there are a lot of fatties out there. just spend a day in any theme park in the United states and you will see plenty.  however, i have been categorized as obese by the US gov't and I'm 6'2" 225 lbs.   according to their charts, I should weigh 180 to be considered of "normal" weight, which is ridiculous.  i played college sports, work out all the time and can run a 5k in 21 minutes.  the prospect of me or anyone else similarly built being categorized as obese because some agency dink has a chart that says so, is total nonsense, much like the statistics in this article.

People live to eat, they don't eat to live.

And let's face it, food is a great pleasure - second only to sex.

Gluttony is a sin, but look around you and see how much money is made selling food.

Not just "fast food" but every food outlet whether it be a restaurant or the grocery store.

Observe the display of food in the grocery stores of the developed world; so much good food and so many choices.

There will be no government program that prevents people eating good food that tastes delicious and that they can obtain by driving their car to buy.

Besides, the corporatocracy that runs the governments won't allow it; they make too damn much money off of it!

Turn on the T.V., look at the circulars, notice the ads on the Interwebs; they all show delicious fatty, salty, sweet food with the pounding message of CONSUME!

I call bullshit on the cereals and tubers. When my diet was primarily potatoes and grains I was 50lbs heavier. Even when I kept it at 1200 cals per day and was hungry, exhausted and grouchy to the point of depression. I eat no wheat or any processed food now. Now it's 7-10 oz of protein, massive amounts of raw and some cooked veggies, quinoa, oats and a little raw dairy. I exercise at least five times a week. At 52, I'm in far better shape than I was in my 30s.

The answer here is simplicity. Exercise, foods in their natural state, preferably organic grown by yourself or someone you trust, and some form of stress relief. My favorite being lots of sex and yoga. This is all it takes. But, certain people would cease to make massive amounts of money.

I call bullshit on the cereals and tubers.

I would both agree and disagree with you here, Miffed.

I think a BIG distinction needs to be drawn between WHOLE grains and the highly-processed, fiber and nutrient-poor, high glycemic index white flour-based carb foods so common in the Western world today.  I can tell you that I feel a VAST difference between eating white flour noodles (which I rarely consume), or white bread, vs. a bowl of brown rice or barley with my veggies and meats.  The blood sugar spikes typical of consuming processed, non-whole-grain carbs are radically higher, and more destructive to the body in many ways, than are the lesser and broader increases in blood sugar brought about by eating whole or unprocessed grains, aren't they?

Happy New Year akak!

I do agree with your point. It's been so long since I've eaten white flour (last time I did I felt so ill and tired I never did again) I have forgotten what it's like to live on it. I think I was chronically tired and thought the feeling normal. I'm so vibrant and full of energy now few my age can keep up with me.

I must keep grains at a minimum. I do eat wild and brown rice but usually mixed in a soup or stew. Potatoes kill me. I gain weigh rapidly. I don't eat them more than once or twice a year. I do occasionally eat yams or sweet potatoes. Funny thing is I'm 1/2 Irish and 1/2 English so this shouldn't be a problem. But I had potatoes for Christmas and boy do I regret it and just got back from a 5k jog that was pathetic.

I also notice when I run, if I have had the improper fuel the day/ night before, it makes a noticable difference. I always carb load on Friday for my usual 10k Sat. morning run. I find if I don't eat the whole grain pasta it makes difference.

Don't even get me started about eating some lettuce mixed in the day/night before. Happens a couple times a year, the very reason my route includes the in laws shop with facilities :) But man does that screw up ones pace.

It really is amazing how in tune one gets with the body when you tend to eat clean, and notice when you do not.

Insulin spikes when eating carbs. Regardless of whether they are whole grains or not. The added benefit of whole grains is that you have fibers, which will make you feel full, hence, eat less.

But 20g of carbs from a whole grain bread slice or 20g of carbs (including the added sugar) from a white bread slice will do roughly the same insulin wise.

Fri, 01/03/2014 - 14:57 | 4297244 akak
akak's picture

My understanding (which may be incomplete or incorrect) is that blood insulin spikes are much reduced when ONLY whole-grain foods are eaten, as opposed to refined and processed white flour products.  Also, the carbs from literal whole grains will be digested and absorbed more gradually than they would be from food made from the same grain ground into flour.  Is that not what the whole glycemic index is about?

i started subbing soy protein, soy nuts and soy chorizo, and i swear it has jump started my metabolism and made the exercise i do much more effective. oatmeal and sprouted grain bread are good alternatives, grain is the basis of the food pyramid, (see also macrobiotics, which has been pushed aside by what i call radical vegan diets) i don't fear the grains, but i am reluctant to take on too much protein, because its hard on the kidneys, and as you get older you don't need the muscle mass. and i agree that you have to find a lifestyle you can sustain, or you will always feel deprived, angry, and tired.

Cows, horses, elephants etc don't need to eat meat for protein and neither do people.  I have great energy on a whole foods plant based (WFPB) diet with a green smoothie every morning.  I eat all I want and my weight's been stable for 6 months at levels I last saw 40 years ago.  I get the same wattage output on a bike or elliptical machine at heart rate 10 beats slower than I did before.   I even stopped drinking coffee in the morning because I don't need it, I wake up with energy.

I rely on these guys for non-fad guidance:

T Colin Cambell, Phd; Caldwell Esselstyne, MD; John MacDougall, MD;  Dean Ornish, MD; Michael Greger, MD.

It can be a little awkward when invited to dinner.  I just eat what's offerred and try to eat more of what fits my usual diet and less of what doesn't.  So I ate at various times over Christmas:  two pizza meals, eggs benedict, lobster, local sole, some cassoulet, six oysters, a few cookies, a few cookies, a piece of cake.  I figure if I'm 90 or 95% WFPB, I'm good.  I gained no weight over the season.  Works for me.

there are two separate problems here, when native cultures leave their traditional diets, and when westerners no longer have the basic stress of everyday life.

in our culture people who are now nearly 100 did not necessarily have good diets, or diets with fresh fruits and vegetables. food processing; packaging and shipping has made the balanced diet a basic right for every american regardless of their climate or region or economic condition. diet isn't the complete answer.

the children of that generation were not obese either, because that was the age of anxiety, nuclear bombs, (if you couldn't find a job you went on welfare, and that was like going to jail, and going to jail meant you were a failure. there was deep shame if you were suspended from school.) what happened to the age of anxiety? we medicated our way out of it, and government assistance, entitlements became the norm, not the exception. show me a fat person and i'll show you someone with a personal sense of entitlement, a fundamental belief system that everything will come out just the way obama is telling them, and they are usually pumped up on antidepressants (they used to give meds to professional athletes and soldiers before the big battle, now we premedicate against a let down)

our food supply is better than its ever been, though you can argue about the quality of agribusiness products, organic products are affordable and available as well. so that leaves the medication problem, but if you took away all of americas antidepressants for a week, obama would be hiding in basement of the WH, and the entire Congress would be in recall. this is why obama is subsidizing healthcare.

Good food is available in most places but most food is not good.  Factory farmed food is generally loaded with antibiotics and toxins and filthy.   I recently read that 50% of chicken breasts tested positive for drug resistant bacteria.  Nor is it illegal to sell salmonella infected chicken.  Read some about how factory farmed chicken is processed.  It's not just the inhumanity but the filth.  Soaking carcasses in a water bath (to increase weight) - a dilute fecal broth -- yum yum.

I had to crack up on the comment with slim pretty women in San Francisco and fat women in San Jose...is that really true?  I'm in so Cal and it's a mixed bag everywhere down here.

The problem with all of this though is companies and banks trying to predict profits on slimming folks down.  The best deal is still education and human to human help and support to work on it.  We know it's an issue and we don't have perfect people walking around out there but if you read enough reports from insurance companies, OMG these bad folks are just bankrupting the country so something in the middle here without making the obese criminals would be nice.  A while back I took on an insurer with one of those stupid reports promising we could save a trillion over about 5 years slimming people down..well do you think that's going to happen in 5 years unless you take food away from all?  Trillion was an exaggeration and millions and billions are always up for discussion.

Pay attention to the "news content farms" that are coming your way as if you have not noticed they are doing this with automated bots that write stories...and they can set the parameters on the templates to put weight on the story where ever they want.  It was like today I called a story a farm content resemblance with trying to create a sense of urgency over the fact that ER room visits will increase with Medicaid.  Well think about that, can you do anything about it, no. It's a hospital issue if in fact the study has any real weight but again the "news content farms" are making their way to news channels everywhere and they are powerful so stop and think what you get your bowels in an uproar about..and there are things to get stirred up about as Zero Hedge finds ton of them.  Just watch out for the nonsense though as we will see more of this and interesting to watch Forbes Media/Magazine to see if they get a buyer for their "bot journalist" as if you not noticed some of thier content is bot generated and they made no bones about it and told all when they started their bot news.  They still have journalists over there too and some good ones but they get mixed in with the bots.

Of course this makes a lot of journalists nervous and I would be too in their shoes, but anyway pay attention and watch the changes and be aware of what gets your emotions going and make sure it's not a bot controlling you:)  The last video at my blog will blow you away when you see how the process is automated and the guy who created the bot wrote and published 10k books with it and put them on Amazon for sale.  News agencies are into to this too as he explains in his video. It just opens the door for a lot more quantitated illusions with creating a virtual world of where they think you should gravitate to.  Old folks like me can see it but the younger crowd under 30 is what I worry about with them being satisfied that they are getting good news with all of this.

Hunting for food.  Hmmm,  I calculated the hours I spent in a treestand and the calories burnt walking/busting through snow to get to it.  I hunted all last year and due to my own choices I wasnt shooting at does the first part of the season.  I was skunked last year and this year spent ten minutes on my first day in the woods before I killed a buck.  One hundred hours minimum hunting last year.  Boneless meat yield 85 lbs from a big buck.  I wont tell you what kind of money I make but you can damn sure bet that venison cost a lot more per lb than king crab or beef tenderloin.  Forget about the 500 a season we pay to lease the land to hunt on it.  If people had to hunt for their meat they would starve to death.  If I had to hunt for meat it would be at night over a block of salt with a night vision scope.  I laugh when I hear people say they could live off the land.  I have worked in orchards and on dairy/grain farms.  Americans in general have no clue where their food comes from or what kind of hard work is involved.  I will say this that for every day of shelf life in processed foods you probably trade an hour or two from your life as the end game.  For those that don't hunt,  I say too bad.  You will never be closer to your roots.  Taking a mature whitetail buck with a bow I think is one of the more underrated challenges in the outdoor world.  I have hunted all my life and hope to until the day I die.  If I die in a deer woods my wife will know where to find me and I will be smiling.  As to the gathering part,  the women still have that down.  Just look at how many shoes your wife owns.  Enuf said.  Happy New Year to all.

Ermm, no. Their fat is full of toxins, so as soon as they starve they will get sick quickly. Fatties are also vitamin deficient, so they will collapse under minimal stress.

It will be the skinny ones that survive as they are used to live with less.

It's all about restricting calories and getting sufficient exercise, no matter what type.  Landed in Vietnam at 175 lbs.; spent one year as a combat medic humping the boonies and working at forward aid stations - my weight dropped to 135 lbs and I could easily carry 60-75 lbs. all day through the hot jungle with no problem.  No easily obtainable snack foods, no couch to sit on and watch TV, carried my food on my back, got plenty of fresh air and exercise, recreational time pleasantly spent with boom-boom girls [many stories there!] - at times it was stressfulful, but you can't have everything......It felt so good to be fit that I have maintained fitness to this day [but not the 135 lb. weight....]

That's actually a great investment, as they are flip sides of the same coin... Weigh Watchers knows they are making people fat (in the long run) that's why their "clients" are coming back year after year.

The genius about the concept is that Weight Watchers' products are as fattening as other products, but sold in smaller packages at a higher price. So you just end up spending more.

Michelle I didn't say women don't know where their food comes from, I said most Americans,  not all.  The shoe thing about women being gatherers also not directed at women that farm for God sakes.  Lighten up.  The wife will be there when we butcher four steers later this month gutting, cutting and wrapping.  She damn sure knows where food comes from and what kind of work it takes to grow/process your own.  Venison will always cost more than beef is all I am saying and the work involved in time and money spent speaks for itself.

You know, even fat is fine, as long as it's natural fat, and not processed.

Butter, olive oil, bacon, pork chops, beef, all good (in reasonable amounts).

The stuff that is making people sick is processed food.

It evolves from a loss of culture, a culture where we learn to cook, to nourish ourselves, and enjoy it. A culture where we invite friends to a home made dinner, and enjoy the company.

You now see families microwaving an individual processed meal for each family member "because they all want something different"... Really mom/dad? Or are you just lazy and don't give a fuck about your kids' health?
