Well if all this is true then I only knew 7 of them and the rest were surprizes. I think Mississippi is the worst of many, many categories though I thought Oklahoma took Obesity away from Mississippi last year or the year before.
The no surprizes for me included: Mississippi, Michigan, Alaska, New Jersey, Hawaii, South Carolina and South Dakota. Add Florida for eight.
I can definitely see Montana, weren't they the last state to pass DUI/DWI laws? I'm not a fan of limits to personal freedom but driving while drunk should be considered attempted murder, it puts too many people at risk. Lost an aunt that way (as a pedestrian, and the police said it was a nasty mess but at least she likely died instantly) so maybe I'm biased.
Tornados in Minnesota? While I imagine they get some I can't see it being worse than some of the plain states farther south. Of course we get a few small tornados here in Maryland during the season. AIDS? That's surprizing, but I guess per capita + D.C. being nearby that makes sense.
Idaho....um, is weak government influence really a bad thing?
I would also make the argument that North Carolina's "worst teacher salary" isn't really a bad thing either. In Detroit they make an average of $71k (versus a national average of $56k which is still way too high) so it can't really be a money factor.
Anyway, the map was produced by the "Cartographic Research Lab" at the U. of Alabama, which basically means an undergraduate from the Geography Department with some very light skills using ArcGIS put this together.

I have seen Baltimore and I've been Baltimore-oriented most of my life. Drove through some of the worst areas (well-trafficked streets) a couple weeks ago and reported my experience here in a comment although it certainly wan't the first. Maryland is about 29% black, with certain spots being 100%. But somehow I thought it would be worse somewhere else, like say, Nevada. Blacks are a very promiscuous people naturally, and when they have nothing to do all day...well....they fuck.
I grew up in the Edmondson Heights/Woodlawn area- having seen that mess as a child I'd be stunned if someplace else had a higher rate and if it did I would want it nuked even faster than Baltimore should be.

I have traveled a lot and this map is useless in measuring the quality of life in our various states or even in a particular state. Cxity life is typically worse than smaller towns. In Az. Phoenix and Tucson suck, but there some great smaller towns.
The winner, hands down, is North Dakota.
I think the person who drew up that map needs to reconsider how they phrased it.
