Sales Of Hitler's Mein Kampf Are Surging...

The headline of this post is one that I am not sure how to interpret, but undoubtably marks something of significance. Personally, there have been many occasions throughout my youth, as well as my adult life, where I had a desire to read Mein Kampf. I was always curious to get into the mind of one of humanity’s greatest sociopaths. To get a glimpse of the thought process of a man capable of such cruelty and evil. To understand the types of words he used and the various psychological tactics he employed to manipulate an economically destitute and politically demoralized German population.
These feelings welled up inside of me once again back in 2008, when I feared that a financial and economic meltdown could cause the U.S. population to be thrust into the arms of a demagogue. I wanted to be able to more accurately identify the rhetoric of one of history’s more “successful” demagogue dictators in order to be able to spot similar trends should they arise in my time.
While I never got around to reading it, I did read part of one of Hitler’s speeches from before the war. It was interesting to not how he did not openly speak as a raging psychopath on his way to destroying much of Europe. Rather, he attempted to appeal to his audience as rational, passionate leader there to protect and exalt the German people back to greatness. That was the scariest thing of all.
This is what the top sales chart on iTunes’ category Politics and Current Events looks like.
At this point I’d like to remain hopeful that these sales trends spring from a similar curiosity on behalf of the population, rather than from a darker more hateful place.

How could that be?
Chris Faraone explains why in a fascinating essaythat argues ebooks provide the perfect format for reading controversial material. “Mein Kampf could be following a similar trend to that of smut and romance novels,” Faraone writes. Customers may have not wanted to be seen reading the book or having it on their shelf at home, but the cheap digital copies “can be quietly perused then dropped into a folder or deleted.”
Ebook reviewers’ comments support the 50 Shades of Grey theory. “I think I waited 45 years to read Hitler’s words… I wish I had read it sooner,” wrote Steven Wagg. “Curiosity killed me to get this book,” said another reviewer. The document also functions as a warning: “People need to understand that if we do not learn from people like this, then we will fall into their traps again,” Ray D’Aguanno wrote on Amazon.

In my own circles, I haven't noticed any change in attitudes that would suggest everyone it ready to start a genocide.
I have noticed that quite a few people fear or are aware of the conditions leading to a dictatorship. I suspect this awareness is driving the curious to this book in their search for parallels.
There's one helluva strong under current going on. Went to the range tonight & met 2 people. One an ex-cop from a small BFE town another had an ATF buddy. Both stated at dinner how close we are to anarchy. Wasn't even the topic of conversation at the time.
Astute observation. I think most people realize that something is going terribly wrong with their country and that traditional sources of information are untrustworthy. Hence the interst in unsanctified material.
To be honest nearly everyone with a brain has to realize we are in unchartered waters, even the unicorn worshipers who put him in office have realized something doesn't smell right.

Now would be a good time for people to read or reread the classic work by a real journalist, William L Shirer, The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich.
That pathetic piece of propaganda has been throughly discredited. Try to keep up.
I found this book to be among the most influential in my life. For the wrong reasons! The most egregiously misleading fact was a quote attributed to Hitler by Bormann. This was to the effect that 'there won't be a single Jew alive (or living, German lebend)in the new Reich.' That seemed conclusive proof of the Holocaust to me and lead to my life-long hatred of the Nazis and their kind.
However, as I was to discover much later in life, Shirer scandalously omitted the second part of that quote. This was to the effect that Jews would be banished to Madagascar, Palestine or 'the frozen Russian steppes'...clearly extermination was nowhere in the plans. This brazen and unscrupulous misrepresentation typified the book. I personally was left with a feeling of seething resentment at having been so badly duped.

I call bull$hit on this Mein Kampf book buying spree claim which was also widely publicised in the UK. Think about it: most people do not buy books, and those who do, favour fiction or things like: how to get thin, make a million, do my taxes, or other self-help stuff.
Who owns the publishers, and why do they want to stir up a storm of outrage, claiming Hitler is getting attention?

Averell Harriman & Prescott Bush traveled to Berlin and interviewed the Thyssen family with a view to founding a German-U.S. bank. The Thyssens were already behind-the-scenes owners of several financial institutions that allowed them to transfer their money from Germany to the Netherlands and from there onto the United States. Read it so you can understand the madness. There are a lot of parallels that one can draw from his "lunatic" writings to the things that our modern "free world" leadership has to say today. If you want a real eye opener, I suggest you also read Hitler's "Second Book". While it is technically an untitled work as it never officially went to press, it will really blow your socks off. In it, he details how he used the United States as a role model for his own actions in Europe.
What the history books and schools don't want to teach is that he simply looked at how the US grew since its inception by doing to the indians what he sought to do to the Jews and other ethnic minorities. The best evidence shows that North America once had some 50M Native Americans living here and over the cource of some 150 years of westward expansion their numbers were reduced to fewer than 5M. Mostly due to diesase and direct slaughter with the remaining being herded into reservations, this served as the exact role model that Hitler was looking for in order to justify his own actions.
The world is a dirty place and no nation has clean hands when it comes to how they rise and prosper. Study your history as you should and not as they want you to and you will learn this very grim truth. Soon, those at the top will also learn the grim truth of what happens when you abuse the privlege of power. Keep your head down and focus not on changing the system but being one of the few left standing once the dust settles. That is a word to the wise.

Of course it didn't. Hitler simply continued what had come before him. The whole western world hated Jews during this time, in imperial Germany the Jews and their money were considered a force behind the progressives, who many saw as a threat to the German empire. But more than Jews, he hated internationalism. The western Jews, with no homeland, going from land to land with "no allegiance to any government", were a prime target to direct this hatred. At the same time, the mostly Jewish Bolshevik leadership with their internationalist agenda were high on his list of "crush-or-be-crushed".
The times were very different back then. Winston Churchill, representing the British Empire, didn't rally his men with pretty words about the honor of the British Empire when facing the Japanese. No, he rallied them with words about defending the honor of their "race". Such were the times.

Indeed in Mein Kampf Hitler wrote that when he was young he sympathized with the Jews over the discrimination they received. But he was a German nationalist (Germanic people, not just the country) and a national socialist and rightly saw large numbers of Jews as aligned with international socialism aka communism. He, and many other Germans, saw that group as behind Germany's surrender in WWI and thus as an active enemy of the German people.
As you note, a large part of the Bolshevik leadership in Russia were Jews, rather like the Democrat party in the US, and Hitler was aware of their role in leading terrible violence against ethnic Russians. He and many other Germans believed Jews had been leaders in betraying Germany once (the WWI surrender, the reparations Germany had thereby agreed to pay and the surrender of some territory) and was not going to give them a second chance.
O.K., this would be funny in some dystopian future where government has completely failed and the populace of all nations have no understanding of the past.

Having read "Mein Kampf" in my youth, my observation is that it was fortunate for Adolf Hitler (and unfortunate for a good portion of the world at that time) that his oratory skills FAR surpassed his writing skills. His writing sucked. Big Time. You really, really woud have to work hard to generate any kind of enthusiasm for writing that bad.
If you want my opinion, the only idiots who would think that his writing was even possibly worth reading would be semi-morons who can barely read. (Hint: Most wanna-be Nazis)

Reading a book is an entirely different thing than following and believing in the ideals that a book espouses. I only comment on this because it seems like you would harshly judge someone for wanting to read it, yet you were somehow immune to your own condemnation.
Initially, I'm finding it difficult to argue against your arguments. Your reponse is not at all unreasonable. I left so much out. My visceral reaction to this book as legitimate literature (I'm being generous, it does not belong in that category) is based on decades of reading literature, both good and bad. Yes, after some thought, I urge you to get a copy of this book and read it. You cannot judge the good from the bad until you have those extreme differences to compare. There is NO Doubt in my mind that you will end up deciding that this book belongs in the category of "I wish I hadn't wasted my time on this"

A confrontation with fascism today is as inevitable as it was in the 1930's. This time, let us stick to words.
Given that Stalin killed at least twice as many people as Hitler, and ruined Eastern Europe for the better part of the 20th century, it is arguable that between the two of them, we picked the wrong ally.
Ideally, the best solution would have been to let them destroy each other, while staying completely out of the way.
Letting Stalin have western Europe, all of German technological advances and scientists etc would've been disastrous for America and the world. I'd say America got one of the best deals in world history. The rest is irrelevant.

I've never believed any of the answers given. Somebody either fucked up royally OR there was a concerted decision made by the US and Russia to divide up Europe and at least the initial phase of the Cold War was contrived in such a manner so as to fool the Populaces being subjugated (1) domestically in the USSR and US via the Russian and US Military Industrial Complexes and (2) in Europe as captured production/consumption markets.

I bought and read Mein Kampf about a year and a half ago. I had always planned to read it...it informed many of the most important events of the last century. Something like that seems worth reading.
The scary thing about that book is that if you strip out all the idiotic jew-hatred and a few other moronic and nonsensical fixations, a lot of it is, if not brilliant, I would say very sound political commentary. He showed an incredibly accurate read on people in general and Germans/Austrians in particular, especially their reactions to politics. He was a polemicist and propagandist of the first order, and wasn't afraid of broadcasting his views far and wide.
People who read that book will find much that makes sense and some that makes no sense, but because it overall is a very smart work they will swallow some of what they may not agree with or that seems wrong. That is what made it such a dangerous book in the 1930. That is what makes it such a dangerous book in the 2010s. If a person with the right mix of charisma and lack of conscience (Obama comes to mind) were to latch onto that book and amplify its ideas in our political sphere, it might not be so good.
Like I said. Interesting 150 pages but diluted in amongst 600 pages to make an overall dull read. Re the Jew hatred: He took too long to get to the point but when and as he described them as parasites of the world, I thought he would have a totally accurate picture, if only he replaced the word "Jew" with "banker". I'll let others argue about how much the two do or don't overlap.

I just punched up a free copy of Mein Kampf on the Internet and read a few paragraphs throughout the book. The droning garbage is unreadable! At best it represents a highly personal formulaic interpretation of the life and times of the author, but at worst is just his own coded, nutty concepts droning on page after page, not truly relevant or meaningful to anyone but himself.
I don't think this "work" could have any effect on any person at this time , and I don't think it can be attributed as some kind of force or cause of the Nazi era or WWII. I think all Hitler's other actions, his speeches, his minions, and their creative and violent fighting, is what took over Germany at that time.
But I don't think this gibberish book could mean much to anyone but to Adolph Hitler himself, and I don't think it was any secret or key to the Nazi takeover of Germany, in and of itself.
Exactly reading this BOOK will not teach you a fucking thing about NAZISM.
It will not tell you how HITLER came to Power.
It will not TELL YOU who PAID for HITLER to come to power (BUSH TRIBE)

Turgid, hard to read, but the chapter on propaganda is genius. I struggled thru it years ago as an amateur WW2 historian. The key though, is he did everything he described in his manifesto. Until he began to believe the propaganda image he created for himself, he was one of the greatest Warlords in history. He came close to ruling all of Europe and Western Russia. He made 3 mistakes: he stopped his advance into France, allowing the British to escape at Dunkirk. He wasted 6 weeks bailing out the Italians in the Balkans ahead of Barbarosa, and he failed to follow Admiral Raeder's advice to sew up the Mediterranean. Had he sealed off Dunkirk, taken the British out of Egypt, and delayed the Russian invasion by 1 year, we would all be speaking German.
At the end, he was a deluded psycho, living like a hermit in a bunker, creating his own reality. When he could no longer ignore reality, he chose suicide.
The Germans were told over the radio that their Fuhrer had died a valiant death leading his soldiers against the Bolshevik onslaught.

Only 8 British divisions were in France in 1939-40: It is not a lot.
Apart these 8 divisions, which succeeded to quickly re-embark at Dunkirk thanks also to the sacrifice of the soldiers of the 1st French Army of the North, France was let alone facing a nazi-fanaticized country with a population of 80 million (vs. 40 million in France), a particularly well prepared war-industry, and an air superiority of 5 vs 1. At the same time the “US ally” refused to sell planes on credit to France !
Hitler didn't make only the 3 military mistakes you mention : He commited many others (Battle of Britain, Stalingrad, Koursk, …etc )
He actually didn't want to fight with England but wanted to achieve a rapproachment with England that would give him a free hand on the continent. But Churchill refused to comply, which lead to the war with Britain. Had Britain complied with Hitler in the first place, or surrendered to the attacks against it, there would have been no platform for the US to later participate in invading Europe.
That would have left Hitler with a one front war against Russia that Germany would have won and had Germans been in control of all the resources of Europe and Russia, it would have been a greater power than the US. Look at the power of Germany within Europe now, even after having lost WWII, been demolished and dismembered.
And yet the mind which created it appealed to millions of Germans and created a world war which killed tens of millions.
What the book tells you is that your ordinary person will follow just any old nutcase if they promise the world.

Judging by the number of up arrows this comment elicited it seems many buyers of the book want to read it for the same reason I do, to see if the problems and hardship I see around me is random or caused by the planning of intelligent personalities. People want to compare notes with what Hitler saw as causing Germany problems in its day and what they see causing problems today. Let's hope that if they agree with the causes of the problems they do not agree with Hitlers final solutions.
