China Plans To Seize South China Sea Island From Philippines, Says "Battle Will Be Restricted"

Tyler Durden's picture

Following Japan's proclamations that it will take over another 280 'disputed ownership' islands, it appears the increasingly dis-approved of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's path of militarism and provocation is working. As China Daily Mail reports, citing experts, China intends to take back Zhongye Island - 'illegally' occupied by the Philippines, according to the Chinese. The Chinese navy has drawn a detailed combat plan to seize the island and the battle will be restricted within the South China Sea. Philippines military is building up on the island and the Chinese see as 'intolerable' the "arrogance" relying on US support. It seems the Obama administration may have to 'not take sides' in another fight soon.

Background on the build-up...

Eugenio Bito-onon Jr, mayor of the Kalayaan island group, part of the contested Spratly islands administered by the Philippines, recently confirmed that the Western Command of the Armed Forces of the Philippines has deployed new air force troops in rotation to the disputed island of Thitu, according to Jaime Laude in a report for the Manila-based Philippine Star on Jan. 5.

Known as Pag-asa in the Philippines and Zhongye island by both China and Taiwan, Thitu is the second largest in the Spratly island chain in the South China Sea and the largest of all Philippine-occupied Spratly islands.

Laude said that the air force troops were deployed to Thitu island by naval aircraft, which will give the residents of the island a chance to visit Kalayaan aboard the returning plane. He added that China's maritime expansion into the South China Sea continues to put pressure on the Philippines, and the Philippine Navy have also been stationed in the area to defend the islands.

...

Six countries - Taiwan, China, the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia and Brunei — claim in whole or part to the South China Sea and its island chains and shoals.

And the Latest Tensions...

Via China Daily Mail (translated from Chinese media),

Relying on US support, the Philippines is so arrogant as to announce in the New Year that it will increase its navy and air force deployment at Zhongye Island, a Chinese island that it has illegally occupied for years.

It will be an intolerable insult to China

According to experts, the Chinese navy has drawn a detailed combat plan to seize the island and the battle will be restricted within the South China Sea.

The battle is aimed at recovery of the island stolen by the Philippines from China.

There will be no invasion into Filipino territories.

A report in the Philippines Star confirmed the Philippines military buildup on the island.

Source: qianzhan.com “Sudden major move of Chinese troops this year to recover Zhongye Island by force”

Of course, claims that "battle will be restricted" are nothing but taunting and should China launch an offsensive here, we suspect the already dry and brittle tinder box in the South (and East) China Sea could rapidly escalate.

It's not "defense" if the islands don't belong to the Phillippines in the first place.  That's why the PRC propaganda is so careful to state that they won't invade Filipino territory.  Note I'm not siding with the PRC on the territory dispute, just stating that there is a loophole if BO wants to use it.

Very astute, Lao. In fact, they do; and, they've adhered to them rather scrupulously for a couple decades; in the US:

"The Supremacy Clause is the provision in Article Six of the United States ConstitutionClause 2, that establishes the U.S. Constitution, federal statutes, and U.S. treaties as "the supreme law of the land." The text provides that these are the highest form of law in the U.S. legal system, and mandates that all state judges must follow federal law when a conflict arises between federal law and either the state constitution or state law of any state."

The Native American Nations are Sovereign Entities in the US, and thus enjoy special treaty rights and privileges, which the Nations often enforce in Court and in actual battle.

To abrogate a Treaty is Not Done. It would be like using a shotgun to play Cricket.

Do you think China would stand toe to toe with the US? Probably not. Cyber and economic war will happen prior to any hot war. China has a few simple ways to gut punch the US first.

A gold manipulation story straight from the PBC, or becoming net sellers of treasuries, or trade sanctions of some sort. There are lots of things that they can do. Sun Tzo wouldn't allow them to attack where the US is strong.

Actually, this move by China is more directly aimed at the US than the Japan/China sniff.  Japan has a well-armed Navy/AF and can hold its own against China (sans nukes) without US involvement (and the Chinese know that).  The Philippines are mostly dependent on the US for anything beyond coastal waters.  The US can not avoid involvement in this one without scaring all of its regional allies/puppets.

Of course.  China will sell a huge portion of their UST holdings, create chaos, internal.  You could cripple essential services, finance services very easily.  This is the thing,  Obama knows this as does the Fed, that the Fed could have a significant write-down on it's holdings and pay the goverment less.  They have written about it, albeit a small discussion.  But it's a weak point that could be massively effected.  Which means military gets paid less, now, Yelland does a trillion a month of money printing, inflation to hyper inflation start will to build i.e energy costs.

Can you imagine the protests and internal strife that will follow.  The Chinese aren't stupid, but they will look for vulnerabilities ala Art of War.  I would say America's economic vulnerability is it's horror show.

Sun, 01/12/2014 - 21:54 | 4325999 DirkDiggler11

The Chinese aren't in great economic shape either. Can you imagine the economic impact if we were to place 200% tariffs on everything imported into the US from China? That would get inflation fired up in the US, while crippling the Chinese economy. Remember, the one thing the commie bastards running the Chinese government fear more than any foreign military is an uprising from their own citizens.

Sun, 01/12/2014 - 22:01 | 4326006 suteibu

That inflation would probably piss off the Walmart army.

While the Chinese may not like their government, they like the American government even less.  Nothing would soothe the angst of a bad economy for the Chinese than a fight with the US.  The patriotism is deep in China, especially against the West (and Japan).  Your calculations would likely cause more problems for Obama than for Xi.

I would add that the Chinese spent more than two generations under strict Marxist rule.  They know how to hunker down.

In case of War with China the US Government declares the Treasuries to be Null and Void. If the USA either Wins or Loses the War the Bonds will be VALUELESS to ANY HOLDER.

Nobody on the World Market will touch them. China loses all value. They would have to dump well before any conflict. In fact if they started to dump em masse the USA will just go to War.

It will have little impact on the Domestic Front in America.

On the other hand shortage of Cinese made crap will happen. But we will be able to feed ourselves. China...well...China will have a problem with that. We will also cut off the Sea Lanes rapidly and starve them from OIL.

We have a Navy. Their Navy is Green Water and Regional. Our Navy is King of the Oceans. We will emerge victorious.

Then it will go Nuclear.

Then everyone loses.

China is testing the waters, and building an understanding of how the US and Japan (or even the world) will react to a similar scenario. I think an military attack by China would be presaged by an economic attack.

That being said, these islands are at the far southern edge of the territorial claim so they might be a good place to start to make their claims to the whole area more legit.

Are you a Constitutionalist?

We signed TREATIES with these Nations. The US SENATE ratified the TREATIES. They have as much LEGAL POWER as the Constituution and Federal Laws.

Whether or not you like it is MEANINGLESS. It is called the RULE OF LAW.

I do NOT, nor did I ever, support the invasions of Iraq, Afghanistan, or Libya, because they...DID NOT AGRESS against our Allies or the United States.

I did support the Gulf War because Iraq attacked Kuwait and...WE HAD SIGNED A TREATY WITH KUIWAIT. Once Iraq was expelled the war was OVER.

We have TREATIES with both Japan and the Phillipines.

I do not like US Servicemen going overseas and dying for ILLEGAL WARS OF AGGRESSION and AMERICAN IMPERIALISM.

But we must HONOR our TREATIES. We must honor our word if we are to have ANY CREDIBILITY.

I do not like it whatsoever. I do not want to see anyone die needlessly.

However if China aggresses against our Allies it must happen. It sucks. It goes against my peaceful instincts. But it is the Rule of Law.

It is too bad that the US Government failed to heed the admonitions of the Founders...AVOID FOREIGN ENTANGLEMENTS. So they made provision for that in the Constitution...HOPING our Senate would be wise enough, or POLITICALLY DIVIDED ENOUGH, TO NOT RATIFY TREATIES.

But that did NOT HAPPEN.

This was 100% predictable and it seems like the USA is trying to provoke a real war with China via its proxies. China must not think it can effectively fight Japan, so it's considering taking out one of the US's weaker satrapies first. I don't know whether the brewing conflict is avoidable or not, but one thing's for sure; the US and its client states are continuing to escalate the situation when diplomacy and disengagement are called for.

The Chinese leaders are not stupid, but squandering such a large ammount of political power by irritating most of their neighbors for something they can not win or keep seems like a bad deal for them.  Unless it is about distracting their public from internal problems. Economically the Chinese economic leaders are stating conflicting goals like restraining inflation and growing the economy.  Perhaps their political and military leaders are chaiotic as well. If so, the Chinese communist party is likely in internal conflict about many things and this is only an outward expression as their different party members pick sides. The phrase 'may you live in interesting times' is a curse in the far east. I hope nothing interesting happens.

Looks like in the effort to engage military force protecting USD as reserve currency, US is tightening it's military grip around China's sea boarders through its allies by provoking China to military conflict.

The question would be, when China looses its temper, if ever? China is one of most peacful nations in the modern history books specially when compared to US, Russia, Germany or UK.

Countries no longer need best military powers to defete other nations. There are many other tools. Most likely Chinese will through all their UST bills onto the open market when their temper is lost.

In the counter strike US Fed will unveil $5T (you think other countries will sit on their USTB?) open market buy operation in one day and that will end USD.

With violence. That they lost does not change the fact that they respond with xenophobic violence. Ye He Tuan, Chang Mao, India, Vietnam (twice), the border disputes that ring China in Bhutan, India, Pakistan and elsewhere, Tibet (settling a score that is 1300 years old); the Chinese will make The Americans look like Swedes.

Correct. Whilst the Chinese have underestimated opponents and over estimated their hand in nearly all encounters since 1800, the fact is that they want what they want and they are going to take it unless something or someone physically restrains them.

We are rapidly headed back to the days of Tribute to The Empire.

Apply this to every contested island, Taiwan, northern Vietnam, all of the China Sea, and the land border areas that were - at any time during the past 2,000 years - part of 'Greater China'.

They want it all back. Every single square metre.

And any Chinese treasures in your museums, too. Thanks.

Goddamnit. Bereft of sarc- no one knows fuck concerning Philippine history...including Filipinos...and the lobotomized USSFs brat-kids currently "not" anywhere near some island where (ha. ha.) terror-like Al-somethings hate our freedumbs.

Well shit! Sarc-switch "Flip"-ed.

Suffice that said, a few bits which might interest ZHers.
The reason for history-mystery is lack of account+no records. You, my friends, would be in decent company to assume Filipinos speak the Tagalog, have a few variations regarding the nucleic-acids, dialectal stuffs and customs. Also 85%ish catholic and lotsa Pros. (Winks to any Aussies here). These folks are low landers. Their history has 3 "parts": 1. Spanish gave them the pope stuff. Spanish not being fond of wtf sounding family names tamed the savages and by force of some law gave 'em Spanish names. That explains migels-a-plenty in an odd part of globe. Also the "millions" killed thing (forgotten history v10).

2. Direct reaction to T-Shitabelts "kill all over 10 years of age" geno-thing, known as the American-Philipino War (contrary to the books was 1899-1916, not 1899-1902) was the creation of The American Anti-Imperialist League, courtesy of a Mr. Samuel Clements, possessor of big-balls. Read his papers on the subject and transcripts of him verbally destroying various proto-Fed(bank)ster, mil-complex assholes and other Eastern Establishment Luminaries. To the T: Iraq V1 (HW), 2 (W) and 'Ganistan war M.O. were based upon the old tactics learned almost a century prior. Including water-boarding (see cover of TIME 1902) and enhanced "burning alive" interrogation tech. Also the classic "thousands of kid/moms/dads in hut light-on fire" strategy. Well over a million civilians were camped and slaughtered. The # is higher but can't be proven, unless you take some years, go there and write some book or some shit on the stuff.

3. Japanese Death. This ugly shit was (any vets here?) shared by both US/PHIL persons. Lots more info here (had several uncles, 2 still alive) who were PAC Theatre.

anyway. The whole mega-gold/HSBC/JP et. them stuff?

turns out, not a fable. If you really look hard, are good with computers and know or have someone who knows someone who is a "TPTB", the shit gets quick fantastic. I suggest poking around a bit.

Anyway, like most here, this goddamn shit is depressing. Humor and sarcs needed or head-splode. Ugh.

Btw man-thong you fucked up and shat all over the damn place.

Q: Who's in the room and who gives a fuck?

A: random dude who'd most likely enjoy drinking Iron Horse with,

Worst timing. For those unaware, Teddy R and the "patriots" of 'Murica are analogous to Dub-yeeehaw and fat ass walmart freedumbz folk. The former refered to "Flips" as being something "below a dog". The latter, ya'll know.

Flip is nigger. A bit of me (flip-dad) spent his childhood hiding/running/hiding from them Jap-Camps. My shitty flip-dad spent a lot of time doing kid stuff, eating bugs, his dad murdered brother too blah blah, As a teen with no school/job, he tutored the rich girls in return for food and books. His dad when alive sold junk stripped from junk. Made enough peso-things for 1 ticket going 1 way to Murica, gave it to my dad.

Not of drinking age he picked a random city to one way it.
3 goddamn jobs while going school- graduating top of his class as an MD.

It was because of my flip dad and 2 others that state law was changed allowing flips to practice medicine. Not long ago after a few years of me+mom doing a hospice, cleaning shit/blood up everyday uh
Flip died when holding his hand.

Apologizes. War-A-Day + Sheeps-once-friend r overflowing with emphathy

Anyway. Because of this fucking Herr Barry-Le Tard DHS/TSA shit the only family-person I was going to see for the first time ever, after finding her on the webs, I can't go and if it could, lost all contact with her (a niece) several typhoons ago, which I know landed where she lived.

Someone (here I think) said something that hit home, something all here (null trolls) know. (Bad para)

...I used to wonder what it would feel like...living in some fascist place...what WOULD it feel like, knowing the bad guy is "here"

No more wonder

Working at a hospice is not a fun experience. Hard fucking work. A lot of Filipino that I know have ended up in Health Care.

It is too bad that what you came to has turned fascist.

We have a deal with the Phillipines. Not even that jerk off President can turn his back on a TREATY.

China had better back down quick. This ain't good. I do not want another war. But this one is not a matter of Imperialism. It is because of past Imperialism that we have the treaty to defend the Phil;lipines.

We will do it. I do not like it. But we will do it.

That is the problem with the Constitution. You either agree to all of it or none of it.

It is Rule of Law versus Mob Rule. There is no luxury to pick and choose if one is to be Morally Consistent.

Well I support Civil Rights and the Amendments. (That is even though our fucking leaders do not.) So I must also support what it declares about TREATIES.

The significance of Thitu Island is:

1: As the second largest island in the archipelago, at 37.2 Hectares, it amounts to almost half of Philippine's occupied land. While China currently occupies only a handful of reefs this would give china a strong position in the NW Quadrant.

See map here: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/2/2a/Spratly_Is_since_Nal...

2: the 1.4 kilometer "Rancudo Airfield"- this airstrip would would allow china to deliver soldiers, weapons and supplies into Spratly. It is currently used by the Philippines to fly recon aircraft over the region as well as maintaining a regular civilian flight schedule.

http://wikimapia.org/2533831/Rancudo-Airfield

3: the civilian population - While most the Spratly is uninhabited, currently Thitu houses more than 100 inhabitants including children and a small school.

The USA currently hold a Mutual Defense Treaty with the Philippines.

While under ARTICLE V:

"...an armed attack on either of the Parties is deemed to include an armed attack on the metropolitan territory of either of the Parties, or on the island territories under its jurisdiction in the Pacific or on its armed forces, public vessels or aircraft in the Pacific."

the attack on Thitu would trigger a US response it is important to note that under Article 1:

"The Parties undertake, as set forth in the Charter of the United Nations, to settle any international disputes in which they may be involved by peaceful means in such a manner that international peace and security and justice are not endangered and to refrain in their international relations from the threat or use of force in any manner inconsistent with the purposes of the United Nations."

The Teleprompter in Chief could interpret this allow a course of action of burying a response in UN shenanigans, though I must add at a serous blow to the United States global image, it certainly would not be the greatest blunder in US foreign policy of the last 15 years.
