Meet "Smart Restaurant": The Minimum-Wage-Crushing, Burger-Flipping Robot

Tyler Durden's picture

With a seemingly endless line of talking-heads willing to ignore essentially every study that has been undertaken with regard the effects of raising the minimum-wage; and propose what is merely populist vote-getting 'benefits' for the ever-increasing not-1% who benefitted from Ben Bernnake's bubbles - we thought the following burger-flipping robot was a perfect example of unintended consequences for the fast food industry's workers. With humans needing to take breaks, have at least 4 weekend days off per month, and demanding ever-increasing minimum-wage for a job that was never meant to provide a 'living-wage', Momentum Machines - a San Francisco-based robotics company has unveiled the 'Smart Restaurants' machine which is capable of making ~360 'customized' gourmet burgers per hour without the aid of a human. First Jamba Juice, then Applebees, next McDonalds...

As Brian Merchant ( @bcmerchant ) explains (via The Burning Platform blog),

Meet the Robot That Makes 360 Gourmet Burgers Per Hour

No human hand touched this hamburger. It was made entirely by robots

.

One robot, rather—a 24 square foot gourmet-hamburger-flipping behemoth built by Momentum Machines. It looks like this:

The San Francisco-based robotics company debuted its burger-preparing machine last year. It can whip up hundreds of burgers an hour, take custom orders, and it uses top-shelf ingredients for its inputs. Now Momentum is proposing a chain of ‘smart restaurants’ that eschew human cooks altogether.

Food Beast points us to the Momentum’s official release, where the company blares:

“Fast food doesn’t have to have a negative connotation anymore. With our technology, a restaurant can offer gourmet quality burgers at fast food prices. Our alpha machine replaces all of the hamburger line cooks in a restaurant. It does everything employees can do except better.”

And what might this robotic burger cook of the future do better than the slow, inefficient, wage-sucking line cooks of yore?

  • It slices toppings like tomatoes and pickles only immediately before it places the slice onto your burger, giving you the freshest burger possible.
  • …custom meat grinds for every single customer. Want a patty with 1/3 pork and 2/3 bison ground after you place your order? No problem.
  • It’s more consistent, more sanitary, and can produce ~360 hamburgers per hour.

Furthermore, the “labor savings allow a restaurant to spend approximately twice as much on high quality ingredients and the gourmet cooking techniques make the ingredients taste that much better.” Hear that? Without all those cumbersome human workers, your hamburger will be twice as good. For the same cost.

I don’t doubt this is where we’re heading; robots are making inroads in manufacturing, farming, and they’re doing more domestic work around the house, too. Yeah, robots are taking our jobs, and it’s not a question of if, but when and how. Economists often treat the service industry as some last bastion of downsize-proof labor, but, clearly, robots will make sandwiches and take orders, too.

A future where we can get gourmet burgers, cheaply and on the quick, sounds pretty nice. But that future will also have structural unemployment, unless we start taking major strides to rethink and reform how we work in a world where robots are doing much of the heavy lifting. If we can, with robots flipping all the burgers, and the right social policies, maybe at least a semi-techno-utopia is on the way

Of course, in a world of de minimus capital costs (courtesy of an apparently job-creating-mandated Fed), why wouldn't the McDonalds of the world adopt such a strategy. The outcome, as we explained before, is all too obvious...

What happens after that should be clear to everyone: more unemployment, lower wages for the remaining employees, worse worker morale, but even higher profits to holders of capital. And so on. Because in a world in which technology makes the unqualified worker utterely irrelevant, this is what is known as "progress."

A number of people actually. The owner of the robot. The owner of the land the robot operates on. The owner of the land where the food is grown and the owner of the land where the electricity is generated to run the robot. Those people will do just fine trading services with eachother.

Which one of those people are you?

For some strange reason I want to be the one to remotely shut down & hold the robot restaurants for ransom.

When McRobotFreshBurger pays my ransom in non-traceable bearer bonds, I'll allow their Burger Mills to run yet again.

Oh - I am a robot.  I am on my lunch hour and will have to get back to my high freqency trading and posting how much on love Obama on various message boards soon.   I have overheard that I may be reprogrammed to calculate bitcoin codes.

Still, I think I am smarter than those burger robots - so I got that going for me, which is nice.

Isn't it becoming obvious that those displaced need to do something to make the rent?

They do. They sell drugs, shoplift or do return scams at big box stores, break into cars, and pimp out the neighborhood girls. At night there are other opportunities in the burglary and robbery fields.

Crime will be increasing from here on out.

We need to void some 'free-trade' treaties to get these 'Muricans working again.

Or bunker up.

Robotics make prices decrease. The problem is that Federal Reserve inflationary policies rob us of the productivity benefit.

We shouldn't have to work 40 hours a week to have an acceptable standard of living.

You only have to work 40 hours per week to afford a decent living, because everyone around you is working 40 hours per week to earn a decent living.

Mon, 01/13/2014 - 02:26 | 4326547 JuliaS
JuliaS's picture

Nope. It is because the 1% makes as much per second as most people earn in a day, and with the money earned they compete for the same products as everyone else, bidding up prices. Also, it is because non-productive members of society generate spending financed directly through money printing, that dilutes the purchasing power of money.

You have to work 40 hours of week to afford a living, because aside from your own family, you're feeding dozens of bureaucrats, generals and plain criminals that do little or no work.

So let me get this straight, if I own monopolies on food production, and I own the biggest guns it's all good? If I'm in the 1% ( I make a hell of a lot more in one second than most people earn in one day) and I can pay the debt of a small country is it okay to own that country if the politicians are willing to sell? Can someone own an ocean? How about the sun? Can science be owned? Can my family hold sick babies hostage for everything their parents have till the end of time because I owned a company that an employee found a cure for that particular disease? Do you draw the line anywhere?

Don't confuse ownership with being productive

Did you know the street parking in Chicago is now privately owned? Not responsible for snow removal or street repair just money collection . Productive indeed.

According to the premise of the "article" *i mean propaganda piece*, people should not even be allowed to negotiate their wages, instead they should just be happy to be able to serve master who is entitled to collect as much surplus value as his asshole can hold.

So what money is there to pay rent when you're not allowed to earn a livable wage?

As I watched the sky fill with chemtrails today in Southern California, I wondered what IS the elites' plan for the 99%? They've got a robot that can replace 50 lettuce field workers, and now this burger machine. Will we all get to kick back in the paradise Marx waxed so eloquently about, liberated from menial labor to use our time for higher order pursuits?

Or do the so-called "elites" plan to kill us off via nanotech aerosol campaigns, GMO, water fluoridation, tainted vaccines, false flag attacks, et cetera, until the sub-class, as Aldous Huxley said, will no longer be recognizable as humans? Will this be how Western nation states finally balance their books, satisfying future benefits obligations by a mass early die-off? Some intelligent people like Catherine Austin Fitts have looked at the numbers and they do seem to head in that direction. I don't see any other plan at work right now.  In the meantime, Welfare for 100 million+ and growing  unemployed, until our "leaders" (Rothschilds, eugenicists, genetic scientists, microbiologists, environmentalists, or is it aliens - it might as well be) can erase/delete us from the biosphere.

Sun, 01/12/2014 - 23:59 | 4326290 Mempo of Twilight
Mempo of Twilight's picture

I suspect they don't have a plan for the 99% and they don't need to. Since the 99% have been relying on the corporations and governments controlled by the 1% to provide them with jobs and food for so long, they have already lost what it takes to survive outside the system created for them by the 1%. When the 1% no longer need the service of the 99% as robots begin to take over, they will simply cut off the supply of food and gas to the 99% and keep everything to themselves. When that happens the masses will realize they are actually disposable and they helped their elites to achieve that with schemes like privatization but by then it will be too late. See Elysium for more details.

Yes, I agree. And Elysium. What a depressing movie.  A likely scenario. In no way did I buy its happy ending. What a crock. The elites we have are playing for keeps. No simple software reboot will do the trick. We need a mass awakening, but the welfare and corporate media opiums are too strong. All Joel Skousen is hoping for is some liberty minded self sufficient  communities that are still intact after various wars and plagues are brought upon us. I'd like to avoid all this catastrophe, but I am afraid that this is the endgame of the 100:1 leveraged debt-based currency road we're on. Peace

Sorry ZH11, this late 40 something is more fit and buff than than the majority of these younger so called Adonis types of whom you speak.

Hell, I take pride in serially having pointless sexual relationships with women half my age while their male cohorts are too busy chugging beer and are too inexperienced to play the game or even know when to take these horny females out for a really good time.

By the way my business involves technology, and I am well known for my skills. Think before you stereotype people!

I know I'm obnoxiously posting, but I'm sick of people thinking that anyone over 40 is over the hill. I used to be overweight myself, but I took charge of my life lost the weight my health then improved and now things are vastly different for me.

Maybe, I'm a creep, but I've inspired a number of others to follow my example. I cannot help it if a certain set of younger women find me attractive. I will take advantage of any opportunity that presents itself to me with no remorse.

Guess what, not matter what your age you can improve yourself you will only benefit yourself and your family.

Also, I am single and am hurting no one.

I guess I'm not sure of your point. So you fuck women and have 1000 hatch marks on you bedpost. Who really cares? My man is 53 and fucks like a stallion but he doesn't have to post it to prove his manhood. Perhaps being a former fatty you are a tad sensitive. Any man or animal can do as you do. Now, having a fabulous relationship with a woman that cares for you whether your fat or fit, rich or poor may be a bit out of your league. But some are just more content with superficial lives and I do respect your honesty.

Miffed, he isn't talking about sexual relationships. He isn't talking about relationships at all. He's talking about a self esteem so non existent that he has to resort to bragging about his "claimed" sexual conquests on a site that, at least used to be, concerned itself with economic issues and how they impacted society.

My suspicion, he was having a mastabatory fantasy as he sat typing that garbage. I suspect he has been replaced a 1000 times with better dildo's than he.

Reminds me of the Dude showing the bartender how tough he is evidenced by the scars he wears. Bartender says, you ain't tough, dudes that put those scars on you are tough.

Thanks akarc,

I am glad you explained it because I'm often confused why men do this. It's really not offensive to me but puzzling. I guess I've been around a very confident man for so long I don't appreciate how hard it must be for a man who isn't so. I will now try to view it with sympathy rather than consternation and denigration in the future which may be more helpful.

Just to be fair to all those McWorkers, they will be entitled to "for life" unemployment assistance equivalent to $13/hr once they loose their jobs to machines. Everyone should be happy.

Essentially they will not be counted as labor force anymore and unemployment will go even lower to around 5%. Those machines should be named McObama.

This will add another several millions to US Democratic Party permanent voters camp and ensure no GOP or Liberterian ever win office, congress or house.

True true but war has been computerized and automated and the result is that you can kill a lot more people with a lot less effort in a lot less time.

And let's not forget good old Ben Bernanke, in recent years he has been to produce gaziliions at the press of a button without having to deal with a cumbersome printing press.

No, but 99.9% of Americans couldn't do this if they had to and are only able to survive on boxed microwaveable foods and meals soon to be spit out by a machine. If hunter gatherer were the new reality, there would have to be a massive reduction of population for it to be sustainable. The average person around me just doesn't have the toughness or tenacity to even begin to do this. Hell, just the other day I had to squish a spider while 3 women and a gay guy were freaking out. Kind of dropped my respect for the human race a peg.

True.  This is probably a good thing for those who take the time to learn...and do it fast.   During the last Depression, the populace was more resourceful with not EBT/foodstamp cards.   Wildlife became scarce because of hunger and hunting. So if 20% of the population knew how to hunt and scavage their would not be enough food to go around.

Many will die and the disease and epidemics may kill the rest.  I wonder if the elites will have enough Google robots to bury the dead in mass graves.

I do not watch Hollywood or TV's crap because it is all Oper Mockingbird.  This is why some of these recent movies areprobably foreshadowing the future.

Hunger Games, saw first one at a relative's house.  Did not see Elysium but based on what those have posted here it is the same type of stuff with the very comfortable elites and the little people starving.

Competition will make Mickey D's cheaper......as it is doing now.  You can get a great sit-down lunch or dinner for about the same price as Mickey D's burger, fries, and a drink, at many places now.  Try Golden Corral, or Pepe's, or Hibachi Grill, and others.

That is an absurd statement - "You can get a great sit-down lunch or dinner for about the same price as Mickey D's burger, fries, and a drink, at many places now.  Try Golden Corral, or Pepe's, or Hibachi Grill, and others." That is not food either - just because you're sitting in a crappy vinyl covered booth instead of the front seat of your car while eating it doesn't change the quality - you're still eating non-food GMO that will rot you from the inside out.

Just a heads up, it's not just min wage jobs being destroyed by technology. You can now get legal helpl through cheap websites. And medical diagnosis assistance.

I find it amusing that the same group that talks about constructive-destruction is the same group saying "if you can't pay people slave wages, they may lose their crappy, shitty, low-wage jobs to technology" as if it's a bad thing.

I mean think of it this way, if people working is less expensive than a machine doing a boring repetive job.....how crappy are we treating these people?
