A Rat-Infested "Shithole" - This Is New York City's Worst School (And The Reason Why)

Tyler Durden's picture

In Europe, "it is all austerity's fault" or so the conventional, and very wrong, wisdom goes. Or rather, fauxterity, because as we showed months ago, with European debt and spending soaring, tax revenues plunging, and zero actual reforms since Draghi's "whatever it takes" speech made any actual attempt to fix the economy through fiscal policy irrelevant (after all the Goldmanite at the head of the ECB will fix any runaway bond yields), the main thing that actually ails Europe is sheer political incompetence and unbridled corruption (and the hangover of record debt, but as every Keynesian knows, even more debt will easily fix that).

As it turns out, the same applies for the US: because in a country in which the lack of economic "growth" and prosperity are attributed to the occasional sequester, and a stingy congress that refuses to unleash the spending floodgates, the money is perfectly sufficient - the problem is that quite often it ends up in the hands of people who one may call criminals, if one were so inclined (although legally is prohibited at least until they end up convicted in a court of law).

Take the case of public school PS 106, located in Far Rockaway, Queens - the school is allocated $2.9 million to serve a low-income population with 98 percent of its students eligible for free lunches. As a Title 1 school, it gets extra federal funds. There is one problem: none of that state money actually makes its way to the students, and with no class, or books, and a rat infestation, PS 106 has officially earned the title of New York's worst school.

The Post details the educational process at one of New York's public schools:

Students at PS 106 in Far Rockaway, Queens, have gotten no math or reading and writing books for the rigorous Common Core curriculum, whistleblowers say. The 234 kids get no gym or art classes. Instead, they watch movies every day. “The kids have seen more movies than Siskel and Ebert,” a source said.

The school nurse has no office equipped with a sink, refrigerator or cot. The library is a mess: “Nothing’s in order,” said a source. “It’s a junk room.”

No substitutes are hired when a teacher is absent — students are divvied up among other classes. A classroom that includes learning-disabled kids doesn’t have the required special-ed co-teacher.

About 40 kindergartners have no room in the three-story brick building. They sit all day in dilapidated trailers that reek of “animal urine,” a parent said; rats and squirrels noisily scamper in the walls and ceiling.

* * *

But five months into the school year, PS 106 classes still don’t have the books or teacher’s guides.

They have no reading program, no math program,” a source said, adding Sills blames outside administrators for not sending materials. Teachers muddle through by printing out worksheets they find online, buying their own copy paper.

The DOE gave no explanation for the missing curricula but said it’s “working with the school to provide students with physical education.”

Surely, all of the above is the result of some evil, cheap legislator who refuses to release another million or two to satisfy the school's pressing budgetary needs. Actually, no. It turns out it is all the principal's fault:

The principal — Marcella Sills, who joined PS 106 nine years ago — is a frequent no-show, sources say.

Sills did not come to school last Monday. On Tuesday, she showed up at 3:30 p.m.

On Wednesday, The Post found her at home in Westbury, LI, all day before emerging at 2:50 p.m. — school dismissal time. Wearing a fur coat, she took her BMW for a spin. She showed up at school Thursday, but not Friday.

When Sills, 48, does go to work, it’s rarely before 11 a.m. — and often hours later, say sources familiar with her schedule. “She strolls in whenever she wants,” one said.

The school hasn’t had a payroll secretary in years.

Not only that, but the school's community members also state that they have never seen a budget tracking the income and spending. Well, the income is clear: generous taxpayers. As for spending: it's quite clear where the funds are being embezzled.

When [Marcella Sills] is out, an assistant principal is left in charge. Yet Sills, who gets a $128,207 salary, also pockets overtime pay — $2,900 for 83 hours in 2011, the latest available records show.

Unfortunately, it all goes downhill from there, because any attempts to rectify the situation are halted before they will even begin.

Staffers won’t speak up or even file a grievance with their union because Sills will retaliate, a source said. Parents wonder if higher-ups know what’s going on.

“Why don’t they get on them? I don’t understand that,” said Michael Moore, father of a second-grader.

Another father, Roland Legions, added. “They’re not doing right by the kids.”

One mom said she couldn’t get a meeting with Sills to discuss concerns. Another said Sills is “just not professional.” “She should be here,” the mom said. “How is she going to run the school if she’s not here?”

She won't. But she will gladly collect her paycheck while the student spend time watching movies with the rats. Actually, scratch that: "A spokesman denied the trailers are rat-infested."

In conclusion:

“This school is a complete shithole, but nobody in a position of power comes to investigate. No one cares,” a community member said.

That's ok - nobody cares, which means one can once more fall back to the traditional bullshit excuse and again blame those evil stingy legislators who refuse to give Ms. Sills a few more million to collect for doing... nothing.

No shit Freddie. My company sells to come colleges, and we had to submit property/SSN/crazy records to prove we're straight up. The kick in the balls is anything that says "anti-corruption" and asks for $150 filing fee. The affirmative action paperwork was even better. As for the Clinton Foundation ads, they are following you, did you visit Hillary 2016 in secret? ;)

I think the Tylers are quick to point out how the system is rotten to the core. This is a street level example about how GOVT policy trickles down to results the common man can see. I work in educational services, and there are good, bad, and ugly setups. LTER, Big Bank, Big ED, Big Med, the corruption has spread everywhere. Clickbait is Simon Black with "Sketchy Man"

It's a worthy post in the newfound land of de Blasio

Let's see how the populist handles an obvious snub of 'the people'

Failure, which would be highlighted by the right-leaning Post, or conflict with the teachers union will be good TV.

Nothing will sadly change... But you can still "hope" for it

1-This is a perfect example of taxpayer money wasted on a scale small enough to clearly see the problem and fix it without a "new" state or federal "assistance".  2-Where are the higher ups within the school system?  3-If there's "no teaching" going on, just "movie watching", why didn't the "teachers" who are members of the teachers union (for the children) bring this failure to educate to the attention of someone in enough authority to stop this criminal abdication of responsibility?  4-This sad experience illustrates how indifference to standards of behavior in pursuit of personal gain is so toxic to the minds of the small children whom the government mandates must be educated in such shithole.  That is what you smell, the stench of Education by Government.

I'm not clear on what your point is, but rather than insult TD, you can be true to the inspiration of your moniker, vote with your feet, and perhaps the smell here would improve a bit. What would Ayn do? I think she might consider the sum of Tyler's efforts, the fruits of the labor he has cultivated over these years, the enlightenment he has brought a very wide audience, and say he's a fine capitalist. I doubt she would be snarky and insult our prolific host. Simply wasn't her style.

(Has Hell now officially frozen over?)

The overall level of sensationalistic (as opposed to serious and/or pertinent) articles here has definitely been increasing over the past year or so, regrettably.  One such article every once in a while adds spice; a regular diet of it, though, leaves one hungy.

I remember when weekends here were filled with electronica music spun by Marla, and Tyler posted open forums for talking about whatever was on your mind, simply to entertain the folks here and build community. Had nothing to do with economics or government or the fed. Was that a travesty? Hell no, it was awesome. I'd say The Hedge has matured admirably, the audience has grown astoundingly, and the economic results for Tyler are witnessed by the type and abundance of ads found here. I click on ads here all the time, just to keep Mr. Durden in the chips. (I hope TD is socking it away in gold and bitcoins.)

Perhaps a slight variation of the question you pose is one you also could benefit from pondering: Why are you still here? (The answer may surprise you.)

It is a dystopia already. No one said any of us have to like it my friend. We'll either keep coming here until the information turns into {dis, mis}information or quit when we've had enough. I agree that the substantial increase in sensationalism, change in tone, red meat pieces - they take away from the crux of what ZH is, to provide truthful and fine (this word being why I came here in the first place) analysis on the happenings of the financial/economic/political world. We just have to see what happens.

I've jumped from forum to forum (and IRC channel to channel at one point) since the mid 90s and participated in cultures that thrived. If ZH goes under the bus, so be it, but it'll be a shame to see it fully compromised.

Off topic but NYC related.
http://www.nationalreview.com/article/368234/voter-fraud-weve-got-proof-...

Liberals who oppose efforts to prevent voter fraud claim that there is no fraud — or at least not any that involves voting in person at the polls.

But New York City’s watchdog Department of Investigations has just provided the latest evidence of how easy it is to commit voter fraud that is almost undetectable. DOI undercover agents showed up at 63 polling places last fall and pretended to be voters who should have been turned away by election officials; the agents assumed the names of individuals who had died or moved out of town, or who were sitting in jail. In 61 instances, or 97 percent of the time, the testers were allowed to vote. Those who did vote cast only a write-in vote for a “John Test” so as to not affect the outcome of any contest. DOI published its findings two weeks ago in a searing 70-page report accusing the city’s Board of Elections of incompetence, waste, nepotism, and lax procedures.

The Board of Elections, which has a $750 million annual budget and a work force of 350 people, reacted in classic bureaucratic fashion, which prompted one city paper to deride it as “a 21st-century survivor of Boss Tweed–style politics.” The Board approved a resolution referring the DOI’s investigators for prosecution. It also asked the state’s attorney general to determine whether DOI had violated the civil rights of voters who had moved or are felons, and it sent a letter of complaint to Mayor Bill de Blasio. Normally, I wouldn’t think de Blasio would give the BOE the time of day, but New York’s new mayor has long been a close ally of former leaders of ACORN, the now-disgraced “community organizing” group that saw its employees convicted of voter-registration fraud all over the country during and after the 2008 election.

Just a reminder about DeCommunist and how he has no conflicts of interest here in making sure this gets investigated.

http://www.discoverthenetworks.org/individualProfile.asp?indid=2592

In the mid-nineties, he served as executive director of the New York branch of the New Party, a pro-socialist, ACORN-affiliated entity to which Barack Obama likewise belonged.

...

In September 2009, when the community organization ACORN was engulfed in several major scandals involving voter-registration-fraud, embezzlement, money laundering, and racketeering, de Blasio wrote a letter to ACORN's leaders reaffirming his support for the organization, though noting that he was “troubled” by the recent revelations.

...

Patrick Gaspard, a former New Party staffer and Obama administration official with significant ties to ACORN, is a close friend of de Blasio and played a key role in shaping the latter's mayoral campaign.

...

After de Blasio's primary victory in September 2013, longtime ACORN leader Bertha Lewis, who said that her political and ideological ties to de Blasio “go back a long time,” predicted a comeback for ACORN’s successor group in New York—New York Communities for Change—under a de Blasio administration. According to a Democratic insider, “ACORN’s long-range plan since 2001 was to elect de Blasio mayor. De Blasio was a big ACORN project.”

Do we really need schools any longer? It seems to me that with the internet schools, like many other institutions and the shitty product they provide, are pricing themselves into irrelevancy. Today's schools are nothing more than state funded indoctrination centers to babysit the kids while the parents serve as slaves to the system.

Engali,

I work in selling to EDU, and I joke about how similar schools and prisons are in the USA. The lunch is the same, both are ATM's for the private sector, and if you don't complete your sentance, you get tracked down and thrown back in. Schools are geared to train kids to guess on a multiple choice "No Child Left Alone Act" testing. I'm pulling my kid at the end of the year to home-school him via the Internet. Charter schools are pioneers, check out Rocketship Education, or the KIPP schools, to see how EDU should be done. At least when I went to Catholic schools, the biggest fear was getting molested....

My sister taught for 2 years in an inner city school, and they had to take out the linoleum tile floors, and put in carpet. The kids would break off the flooring, and make shanks to stab each other. Extra credit - Not the worst school in the district.

Out here in the real world, most people do not have the time or fiscal resources to home school their children.

Removing the enormous government theft in the form of taxes to "support the schools" would help such people, immensely.  We would see many more people opting for this route instead of the mere trickle of families who engage in home education currently.  Along the same lines, by also allowing families to KEEP monies that would previously have been dumped into the Socialist public schools nightmare, would be individual choice among an array of competing schools.

Most are still there in the same buildings that were old then. Now, as then though, most of the problem is the parents. They are either not there chemicaly, physicaly, psychologicaly, mentaly or spiritualy. This gets repeated all over America. Public education is well-intentioned, but attracts sociopaths willing to fuck kids over to the administrative positions due to the unlimited gravy train it represents.

My local district (which is quite small) had a $3M bond election for school improvements. A year later, the money was gone with none of the improvements to the gym promised, no new equipment, pretty much nothing... but $2M of it was spent on the principal's office, including marble and custom art, and of course hundreds of thousands in the remaining balance was spent without documentation. There was no prosecution -- the principal simply moved to another district. They then asked for another bond to do the same improvments promised in the original offering and it (rightfully so) went down in flames. I spoke with a member of the school board that joined just a few years after  the ordeal who whined about how hostile the voters were to bond offerings in the district, and she had no clue whatsoever that this had happened -- none of the remaining people in administrative positions she was responsible for oversight for felt it was important enough to fill her in.

If you look at education spending, it's well ahead of inflation, with no major improvements in the education level of the country. If you look at the spending in detail, you'll find it's all going to administrative positions and contractors building the schools -- virtually none of it goes to teachers or supplies and equipment. It's the same grift we see in banking. Until it all goes, there will be no improvements.

My nephew lives in Arverne which is next to Far Rockaway. He had to get a safety transfer in elementary school because all the black kids (which is all the students) would beat him up and call him white devil. He is actually half Peruvian and definitely looks hispanic. I guess that's the closest thing to white those kids have actually seen close up. Now he goes to school across the bridge in Howard Beach and the school gave everyone an Ipad. So I guess the moral of the story is that the Board of Ed is going to waste your money no matter what, but if you're lucky, you might get some overpriced Icrap for your thousands of dollars of taxes.

There's so much that's all fucked up here that it's hard to know where to start.

All over America people that make ten or fifteen bucks an hour are paying taxes so that twisted fucks like this can take home $129,000 a year. Holy shit, that MUCH money for a principal of a school with 256 students?

Whenever power accumlates in any organization it will, over time, become more and more focused on the well being of it's members. At this point, government at all levels, exists solely to benefit government workers.

$2.9 million for 256 kids is still over $10,000 per kid a year. If you can't educate kids for $10,000 a year per kid then you have deeper problems than one thieving bitch.
