A Rat-Infested "Shithole" - This Is New York City's Worst School (And The Reason Why)

Tyler Durden's picture

In Europe, "it is all austerity's fault" or so the conventional, and very wrong, wisdom goes. Or rather, fauxterity, because as we showed months ago, with European debt and spending soaring, tax revenues plunging, and zero actual reforms since Draghi's "whatever it takes" speech made any actual attempt to fix the economy through fiscal policy irrelevant (after all the Goldmanite at the head of the ECB will fix any runaway bond yields), the main thing that actually ails Europe is sheer political incompetence and unbridled corruption (and the hangover of record debt, but as every Keynesian knows, even more debt will easily fix that).

As it turns out, the same applies for the US: because in a country in which the lack of economic "growth" and prosperity are attributed to the occasional sequester, and a stingy congress that refuses to unleash the spending floodgates, the money is perfectly sufficient - the problem is that quite often it ends up in the hands of people who one may call criminals, if one were so inclined (although legally is prohibited at least until they end up convicted in a court of law).

Take the case of public school PS 106, located in Far Rockaway, Queens - the school is allocated $2.9 million to serve a low-income population with 98 percent of its students eligible for free lunches. As a Title 1 school, it gets extra federal funds. There is one problem: none of that state money actually makes its way to the students, and with no class, or books, and a rat infestation, PS 106 has officially earned the title of New York's worst school.

The Post details the educational process at one of New York's public schools:

Students at PS 106 in Far Rockaway, Queens, have gotten no math or reading and writing books for the rigorous Common Core curriculum, whistleblowers say. The 234 kids get no gym or art classes. Instead, they watch movies every day. “The kids have seen more movies than Siskel and Ebert,” a source said.

The school nurse has no office equipped with a sink, refrigerator or cot. The library is a mess: “Nothing’s in order,” said a source. “It’s a junk room.”

No substitutes are hired when a teacher is absent — students are divvied up among other classes. A classroom that includes learning-disabled kids doesn’t have the required special-ed co-teacher.

About 40 kindergartners have no room in the three-story brick building. They sit all day in dilapidated trailers that reek of “animal urine,” a parent said; rats and squirrels noisily scamper in the walls and ceiling.

* * *

But five months into the school year, PS 106 classes still don’t have the books or teacher’s guides.

They have no reading program, no math program,” a source said, adding Sills blames outside administrators for not sending materials. Teachers muddle through by printing out worksheets they find online, buying their own copy paper.

The DOE gave no explanation for the missing curricula but said it’s “working with the school to provide students with physical education.”

Surely, all of the above is the result of some evil, cheap legislator who refuses to release another million or two to satisfy the school's pressing budgetary needs. Actually, no. It turns out it is all the principal's fault:

The principal — Marcella Sills, who joined PS 106 nine years ago — is a frequent no-show, sources say.

Sills did not come to school last Monday. On Tuesday, she showed up at 3:30 p.m.

On Wednesday, The Post found her at home in Westbury, LI, all day before emerging at 2:50 p.m. — school dismissal time. Wearing a fur coat, she took her BMW for a spin. She showed up at school Thursday, but not Friday.

When Sills, 48, does go to work, it’s rarely before 11 a.m. — and often hours later, say sources familiar with her schedule. “She strolls in whenever she wants,” one said.

The school hasn’t had a payroll secretary in years.

Not only that, but the school's community members also state that they have never seen a budget tracking the income and spending. Well, the income is clear: generous taxpayers. As for spending: it's quite clear where the funds are being embezzled.

When [Marcella Sills] is out, an assistant principal is left in charge. Yet Sills, who gets a $128,207 salary, also pockets overtime pay — $2,900 for 83 hours in 2011, the latest available records show.

Unfortunately, it all goes downhill from there, because any attempts to rectify the situation are halted before they will even begin.

Staffers won’t speak up or even file a grievance with their union because Sills will retaliate, a source said. Parents wonder if higher-ups know what’s going on.

“Why don’t they get on them? I don’t understand that,” said Michael Moore, father of a second-grader.

Another father, Roland Legions, added. “They’re not doing right by the kids.”

One mom said she couldn’t get a meeting with Sills to discuss concerns. Another said Sills is “just not professional.” “She should be here,” the mom said. “How is she going to run the school if she’s not here?”

She won't. But she will gladly collect her paycheck while the student spend time watching movies with the rats. Actually, scratch that: "A spokesman denied the trailers are rat-infested."

In conclusion:

“This school is a complete shithole, but nobody in a position of power comes to investigate. No one cares,” a community member said.

That's ok - nobody cares, which means one can once more fall back to the traditional bullshit excuse and again blame those evil stingy legislators who refuse to give Ms. Sills a few more million to collect for doing... nothing.

We can't shut this school down. The kids have a constitutional right to fuck around all day and watch movies.

There is a prima facie case of malfeasance at least, and fraud at worst. Book her, and her cohorts, right up the chain of 'command'.

Mr President,

This is your moment for humanitarian intervention in this country. Any decent person will be appalled at this story, and the wasted opportunities for children and their parents because bureaucrats are failing them.

Much respect to the rare whistleblower who overcame intimidation to highlight this venal crime against children, their parents and trusting taxpayers.

Shall we sing?

America the Beautiful

O beautiful for spacious skies,
For amber waves of grain,
For purple mountain majesties
Above the fruited plain!
America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
And crown thy good with brotherhood
From sea to shining sea!

O beautiful for pilgrim feet
Whose stern impassioned stress
A thoroughfare of freedom beat
Across the wilderness!
America! America!
God mend thine every flaw,
Confirm thy soul in self-control,
Thy liberty in law!

O beautiful for heroes proved
In liberating strife.
Who more than self their country loved
And mercy more than life!
America! America!
May God thy gold refine
Till all success be nobleness
And every gain divine!

O beautiful for patriot dream
That sees beyond the years
Thine alabaster cities gleam
Undimmed by human tears!
America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
And crown thy good with brotherhood
From sea to shining sea!

O beautiful for halcyon skies,
For amber waves of grain,
For purple mountain majesties
Above the enameled plain!
America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
Till souls wax fair as earth and air
And music-hearted sea!

O beautiful for pilgrims feet,
Whose stem impassioned stress
A thoroughfare for freedom beat
Across the wilderness!
America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
Till paths be wrought through
wilds of thought
By pilgrim foot and knee!

O beautiful for glory-tale
Of liberating strife
When once and twice,
for man's avail
Men lavished precious life!
America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
Till selfish gain no longer stain
The banner of the free!

O beautiful for patriot dream
That sees beyond the years
Thine alabaster cities gleam
Undimmed by human tears!
America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
Till nobler men keep once again
Thy whiter jubilee!

This song represents the spirit of the American country of people much better than the warmongering thing and joke called "The Star Spangled Banner" that represents the US nation on the Potomac.

The first stanza could be a confession of the US' war-crimes in fallujah.

Oh, say can you see by the dawn's early light
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming?
Whose broad stripes and bright stars thru the perilous fight,
O'er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming?
And the rocket's red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.
Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

And the tragic joke: "...land of the free, and the home of the brave." LOL

I am American citizen, not US subject.

Unfortunately I believe that the black citizens of America have drunk too much of the "racism" Kool-Aide to be redeemed. They will one day march upon the rest of America and be in for a rude awakening.

With that said, I also believe that black America and its rancid state are a glowing edifice of what only government can accomplish with people and their souls. They also serve as a kind of canary in the coal mine, as what they plan to do to the rest they tend to do to them first.

Take heed, the blacks are just getting into the station of our destination; A bit ahead of the rest of us, but still on the same train.

It's a paradox of institutions and central planning.  The moment they are formed, their continued existence supercedes their very purpose.  Anything that flies under the banner of "for the greater good."  Similar to pretending every person has an opinion worthy of being heard.

Schools in America are a business for - profit, the little retards go in, and the only things that change when the little retards come out is

1) Their Hight(grade schools)

2) The level of debt their family has accumulated to send them to school.(college)

3) The principles and head-staff are driving lambos paid for by student loans.(college)

The principal at a friends school drives a 2013 White Lambo, that is parked in-front of the school every night.

The average student at the college has over 30,000$ in student debt.

Its an art school.

Just shows you how stupid the world is.

No one in charge of a school actually gives a shit about whats going on in the school.

Schools are "loan mills" pumping out debtors to pay for investors lambos and mansions.

Schools are debt slave training camps, and loan mills nothing more , nothing less.

Community based- home schooling is probably the future.

Idiot, this article's goal, as almost all ZH articles, is to lead one to give up on public funded school systems, throw up our hands, cut our local taxes and pretend our neighbors can afford private school fees even as they have their wages shifting down toward subsistence levels.

Middle daughter is a high school teacher.  She has masters in education and started at 38k a year in a community where average property taxes on 180 K house are 6k a year.  Their class sizes went over 40 students on average and they voted to strike.  In the year preceding the strike they were stomping up and down for more teachers to be hired all while the district hired four administrators at over 100k a year.  Starting pay.  It isn't only education.  Working in home improvements for years I dealt with permits,  inspectors and municipal govermnents all over W and NW burbs of Chicago.  I truly hate to make a generalization but I will.  Government employees attitudes toward the common citizen in general are disdainful.  Their wages and pensions probably on average 30 to 40% more than a private industry job in same category and retirement and health benefits out of this world.  I don't think it is fixable.  I withdrew from the grid.  No more feeding the beast.  I am traveling to Ohio in a couple weeks to help quarter cut and wrap four grass fed steers.  In exchange for my meat cutting services I will come home with a quarter of fine beef.  I think a whole lot more of this is going to be going on in the future.  I was offered a job last week as a factory manager in an operation that is a multi million dollar business at a salary identical to what I was making in 1983.  If it was 1984 it would have been poetic.  I think we have reached "enough."  If a person is aware to what is going on around them hopefully they are working toward a personal peace.  I haven't given up making a difference where I can but I will not shoulder the burden of feeding ten other healthy and capable adults and provide their health care services via government with my taxes any longer.  An elephant is tethered while young so by the time it is an adult it won't even consider pulling that tether from the ground.  Americans are that grown elephant.  Sad

Healthcare, education and the nice retirement = pension, but only by being able to handle the fruits of your labor through these promises can they skim off the top. Starts at the lowest level and filters on down into heads of departments and principals etc.

Because the middle layer knows the level of corruption above, the higher ups are then compelled to protect this middle layer so they do not get found out.

THE KIDS SHOULD BRING A NO WIN NO FEE CASE AGAINST THE SCHOOL FOR FAILING TO SERVE THE PURPOSE OF OF GIVING THEM AN EDUCATION. Reckon they could win too, and bypasses the middle to higher level corrupt part that prevents accountability.

In Zimbabwe, Education is of paramount importance. Often in mud floored grass shacks, the children walk from miles around (when it is safe) to learn as much as they can in the short amount of their lives they will have a chance to. Most teachers are volenteers. 75% of the population speaks english along with their native toung. In so many of the important parts of a society the U.S. falls far short of that which can be found in Zimbabwe.

Family, community, moral certitude, In the U.S. these foundations of a stable society have been undermined and attacked.

How far will the "graduates" of this fine academy go in their lives?

And the Department of Education is just one example in a nation where the examples are legion. And the people become anesthetized and immobilized by the overwhelming barrage of such reports that they bcome lost. The only solution is for the people to rise up and one example at a time demand accountability. Will that occur? Not likely. For fear that some one will look at us and say, and what is your culpability? Where were you when? And now the spotlight is on you. Who among us is williing to have our plasma tv's threatened by the consequences of the spotlight?

Off topic, not really, google, NJ sandy aid money disappears 2014, pick your source.

How much U.S. money was labelled missing in Iraq?  How much here at home? Where does it go?

It is never ending. And will continue to be so, administration after administration, from D.C. to the lowliest municipality, irregardless of the color of party. Why?

People rail agains the mainstream media. And rightfully so. But even when the mainstream media throws it out there what do the "people" do? Flock to forums and bitch about the mainstream media and all this money being wasted.

It would appear bitching does not accomplish much.

Godawful situation. School is an ongoing black on black crime scene. White flight and middle class fleeing the urban areas to the suburbs is/was the only rational response to this crap. Elvis has left the building.

Ladies and gentlemen:
Elvis has just left the building

Elvis has just left the building—
Those are his footprints, right there
Elvis has just left the building—
To climb up that heavenly stair

He gave away Cadillacs once in a while;
Had sex in his underpants,
Yes, he had style!
Bell-bottom jump-suits?
That's them in a pile,
But he don't need 'em now,
'Cause he's makin' Jesus smile!

Elvis has just left the building—
(There he goes!)
Those are his footprints, right there
Elvis has just left the building—
To climb up that heavenly stair

The Angels all love him,
He brings them relief
With droplets of moisture
From his handkerchief!
Cher'bim 'n ser'phim
Whizz over his head—
Jesus, let him come back!
We don't want Elvis dead!

So what if he looks like a wart-hog in heat?
He knows we all love him—
We'll just watch him eat,
So take down the foil
From his hotel retreat,
And bring back The King
For the man in the street!

Elvis has just left the building—
Those are his footprints, right there
Elvis has just left the building—
He's up there with Jesus, in a big purple chair  --- Frank Zappa

And what millions of dollars lost in Huricane Sandy funds are atributable to liberal teachers unions? Again another tool blinded by the blinking neon "union-liberal" signs that go off in their heads  like alarm clocks warning them not to take a chance on objectivity.  No, never ever look at both side. It is one side or nothing. Kill the commie, union, liberal bogeyman and give it to the "they" that have proved they know better.

This reads like most charities in America.

If you look into the tax fililings of your favorite charity via the publically available "Form 990", you'll likely see what I'm talking about. Rarely does more than 20% of revenue actually, phsically, objectively,  make it to the individuals (commonly  about equal to the amount of direct tax support they receive, not counting their tax free & tax deductible components)  and is instead commonly spent on lavish salaries and excessive office expenses while the liberals that run these organizations decry the lack of funding and dire need.

First this article does not reference a charity. It references government edit: arguably the biggest charity of all).  And if you want to reference not for profits then search out the vast number financed by the conservative Koch brothers.  Then google the amount of Federal money gone to New Jersey for rebuilding after Sandy and ask yourself where has the money gone?

If you wish to hold one group accountable you must hold all groups accountable. But you won't d so evidenced by the "liberals fault" meme that holds you captive. Nothing will change.

A school district in our area just lost its accreditation.  So it's students are being spread out to other school districts in the metro area.  The media refuses to show any video footage of the schools in that district.  Why?  They are fucking palaces compared to the school where my kids go.  They've had so much money thrown to that district that has basically gone to union construction teams, technology, administrators, etc. but they've never hired any decent teachers.  Brand new schools there are now sitting empty, while our school was built in the 50's, has great educators in it and a spartan administrative staff and a great PTO... and routinely scores in the top 3 for the state.  The Dept. of Education in this country is simply just another redistribution scheme like so many others - it's not doing much to actually help children in this country.

This is horrible, but what is always funny is how people wish violence on scam artists in edumacation, but make not a peep about the Pentagon losing trillions, Wall Street bailouts, or NSA spying.

People especially get angry when a minority games the system.
