Why would we develop new lightweight metals for military vehicles and some sort of incorporation into things we are going to export instead of manufacturing our own heavyweight socks and denim jeans for ourselves? There's no way the average person can hope to make $25 to $50 an hour on some kinda high tech stuff. On the other hand, with reasonable prudence, a person can eat on $7 to $12 an hour.
