With a government intent on growing its entitlements, welfare state, and implicitly it's debt load... what could be more terrifying than the future debt-serfs refusing to be born into existence. As the birth rate in the US tumbles to yet another multi-decade low, one has to ask how confident the young adult of today is and how, again, the Japanization of America continues to indicate a dark future ahead...

That's what they think, but instead they'll going to import unskilled labor in the face of the next wave of automation. Automation focused almost entirely at eliminating low skill jobs. These new wage slaves are simply going to be new clients of the welfare state and only speed it's collapse instead of saving it.
They were never intended to save it. They are only useful because they work cheap, and they vote. Cheap labor for the Red Team. Votes for the Blue Team. Every sociopath wins! That's all that matters. It's the New Feudal World Order.
Then why did they do it in Europe? They don't really have a red team to speak of, and what red team they do have would be blue here.

There is something big coming, that has never happened before, and I don't think even our elites have fully grasped it yet. The ruling class, for the first time in history, won't need surfs. They won't need them to fight their wars, serve them, work for them, or even buy their products, which will be impossible without a job. When we reach the inevitable conclusion of automation the 1% simply won't need the 99% for anything, and when they realize this it's going to get very interesting.

Thanks to automation we'll need much fewer unskilled workers, but hey the birth rate was falling, so it all works out. It would have been nicely coordinated if not for mass immigration from the third world. This coming social issue will be entirely of our own creation.
If the future holds what I fear then automation will go the way of the do-do bird. Who will be able to afford it? Kuntsler makes good points on that topic.
It would seem to eat itself about half way thought. Technological advances are currently fueled by a consumer market, but once automation grows enough it destroys much of the consumer market. Maybe they are hoping to coast across the finish line on Keynesian economics. Give the consumer the money directly through entitlements and he'll still buy the latest new gadget. We just don't know because in that world our rules break down. Marxism doesn't work because there are no workers, and free markets don't work because nobody has any money to buy anything. I do know it's going to happen, because people want it to happen.

Yep you hit the nail fair and square on the head there. My proposed solution: If people don't want to work then pay them not to work. Just make sure that they cannot breed either, and make sure that the workers still get more money than the non-workers. And sort out education so those who want to learn how to solve the world's problems (eg energy shortages) can do so. Sounds great when I say it fast. Shame that the implementation ain't so simple.

The story I heard is that poor people breed like rabbits in the hope that a couple will survive to look after them when they get old. When people are assured of care in their later years, and infant mortality is low, they spend more effort feathering their nest than filling their nest. Of course, this was a comparison of third world countries and western middle class. Results may differ for modern, warped welfare incentives in "developed" nations.
This is due to having nothing but shit jobs, so sane people don't start families.
The government answer will be immigration reform, but that just makes the problem worse since it increases bodies on the non-taxpayer end of the curve and does nothing to amortize the cost of social welfare programs.

Not only shit jobs, but massive debt. People are getting out of college at 22-24 and they are buried under mountains of debt, and then they enter a job market full of the shit jobs you mentioned. In most cases, both husband and wife have to work, leaving little time to have children, and little money after living expenses and debt payment, often working jobs that do not require a college degree anyway. On the other end of the spectrum, you have the FSA and another army of illegals who care nothing for rather or not they can afford children, since the nanny state will just give them more money for nothing. Those that should be having kids are having 1, 2 or none. They give great thought to the decision and put a great deal of time and effort into their children. We waited 12 years and had two - replaced ourselves. Both were top of their HS classes, are well rounded and going to top colleges (which we saved assiduously for). They are everything you could want in kids and are capable of doing pretty much anything.
If we were 20 years younger, I'm not sure we would choose to have children given how screwed up things are.
In contrast to other extended family members (so the genetics aren't all that different) you have many single parents (never married or divorced) who had more kids at an earlier age, who were not as well educated (or as innately as smart). They are happy as Assistant Managers at Dunkin Donuts and their kids are..... well, not exactly grandkids you'd brag on. Compared to our 4 in 2 generation larger family you see 7 or 8 in 3 generations during the same time frame with incomes that are FAR lower. Some have been on welfare or gotten WIC or Food Stamps. Scarily, this is 'MIDDLE CLASS' behavior - or at least people who were born into the middle class. Even the more successful have rarely matched the living standards of their parents. We seem to be alone in having done FAR better than ours. The main difference is that we went to marginally better schools, cared about education and worked our tails off. We WAITED until we could afford kids and lived below our means once we were financially secure.
'Lower classes' are even more dysfunctional, have even more kids and depend even more on the giv to get by.Having lots of kids early in life - outside of a stable marriage - is a guaranteed path to poverty (though government seems to reward this behavior and makes it affordable).
The masses are - sadly - conditioned NOT to think, be ambitious or plan for anything. They slide through school and will barely get through college (IF they can get in and pay for it).

I think a large part of this is a result of simple cultural changes with the advent of birth control and differing social norms that do not include lots of children.
Apart from that a decreasing population is not a catastrophe for mankind. It IS a catastrophe for collectivism which essentially requires growing more prosperous populations willing to give up ever larger amounts of their productivity to the wise redistribution of the State. Because all states spend and promise more than they can tax the future requires huge numbers of happy debt serfs who will while away 60+ hours a week with 70% tax rates...and like it!
Collectivism destroys itself over time through a host of ways, mainly by penalizing all of productive life while rewarding connections to government officials and the unproductive. It simply becomes less and less and less desireable to take business risks, investment risks, engage in long hours, and even start and fund families. The Russians are trying to use government incentives to raise the birth rate. Japan and all of Europe is in the same boat.
I also just believe that emotionally no one is excited about the future socialist utopia...even those who advocate it. Who invests in that future in any way?

My stepson lives at home and works a $9 an hour job. He's a good kid and helps out with expenses but he's as close to being able to get married and start a family as he is to climbing MT Everest. My daughter lives with my ex-wife and works a $10 an hour job. Both are in their twenties.
We are building a world where a whole generation or two of young people have endless sources of cheap entertainment but never the means to actually accumulate wealth or build an independant family life. The majority of the jobs these days that pay what we used to call a living wage are in government, corporate management or medical and financial professionals. Everything else is in the process of being driven down to minimum wage.
Welcome to an 'american' world. It is a cosy place to live in, you'll see.

No ... it's being pushed by global business ... more warm bodies to work at minimum wage in the US, so they don't have to pay the exorbitant 'fees' charged elsewhere to other governments and gatekeepers.
That's the supposed theory behind it, but if you look at it, immigration is a net loss because the average income is at the bottom of the scale -- I think quite a few studies have indicated that it's a net loss due to benefits v. taxes collected. California certainly seems to reflect this.
I suspect even if we structured the law to encourage immigration of high-earners, it'd still pan out to be a net loss, since most of those would compete with high-earning professionals already here (like we see with H1B visa abuse in the tech industry.) The only place there's a definite gain is in professions with obvious shortages (likely healthcare in coming years) where extra bodies actually results in extra tax revenue.
The demographics will prove you wrong. I am a Finance Analyst and did the crunching a few years ago, using the 2000 Census and 55% of the Hispanics, made less than $40K a year, which means they didn't pay any taxes. But with an average of 2.9 children each, they always reaped the Earned Income Tax Credit, even though they didn't pay any taxes at all. And those children now cost almost $13K a year, apeice in the California School's. That's just shy of $39K a year, so to me, they take out, waaa-ay more, then they put in. About 99% of the kids, get free breakfasts, lunches and after school 'snacks' and after they're out of school, free child care (we call it CALWORKS), where we pay illegal mothers, to babysit each other's kids.
Add in WIC, TANF and a slew of other 'alphabet soup' Federal and State entitlement programs and you have an unmarried, mother of two children, with no income, no jobs, bringing in $36K a year in benefits. That doesn't include Section 8, which would bring it to at least $50K a year. And these are the people, that are producing record number of progeny.
Does this factor in abortions performed since Roe V Wade 1973? -55,000,000 and counting or just straight up (no births)?

Having never had kids and being relatively prosperous, may I suggest that just maybe a lot of us are choosing to not reproduce, not for the good of the children or humanity but the simple fact that children are an expense to our economy and freedoms? Someone who invests a substantial effort for higher education may actually be pursuing a btter life for themselves rather than some higher ideals, not that they would not be willing to lie to themselves or others about their choices. Having been married several times I know this to be true for those wives. Let us not forget that regardless of all of the peace and earth loving bullshit we hear, there has never been a world more concerned about "Me".

I'm afraid you might have it a little backwards. Homo s. have been breeding like rabbits for 40,000 years. We've spread over every imaginable piece of land that exists, more than any other species. From band to tribe to chiefdom to state to empire to ?Global empire?. And every time we've expanded our territory we have extirminated many other species and habitats and peoples. Remember the fertile crest? Not so fertile anymore. We are headed in only one of two directions: 1) Fast anhiliation due to nuclear war, or 2) slow ahniliation due to the extirmation of our own resources (habitat and species). There's a reason the world is in a mad scramble for the last remaining resources you know. According to many the anthropologist archeologist, ecologist, biologist calculation, it is most likely we will be extinct in less than 100 years (that's the slow death).
Both of these dead ends are due to overpopulation. Reduced populations rates are a good thing in the long run and the only thing that will save our species. I agree with your post. Maybe it's a race between Darwinism and the human brain; is the brain capable to solve the problem of overpopulation by exploring space before we run out of time? I inevitably see a worldwide, fast-acting incurable disease far worse than AIDS manifesting itself if we overpopulate to such extremes.
Although we are wasting billions in an attempt to colonize Mars, true story, when we could be spending that money on the issues at hand, the lack of gravity would kill us before we ever escaped the solar system. If it didn't the germs from any life planet out there probably would, or our germs would kill the species on it.
The real question is: are our leaders smart enough to learn from the past 10,000 years of human behavior? Over and over humans commit genocide and conquer other people. We exploit our resources, deforest entire regions, repeat failed crop practices that leave ground infertile, and force plants, animals, and cultures into extinction. You'd think if people were smart, we'd have figured that pattern out in at least the last 500 years. But alas, the last 500 years have seen the most fatal of the repetitious mistakes. In 1492 only 1/3 of the entire world had boundaries. Humans have always been territorial no matter what sort of society they lived in, xenophobic. Wars are part of our evolution, for resources, to grow our populations. It would take a serious change of behavior or mutation to reverse 3 million years of evolution. This population graph gives me hope, expecially if the rest of Europe is experiencing the same thing.

I don't consider the money being wasted to colonize Mars. Money should be non-existant anyways. Why have it in the first place? Because it elicits consumer power and competition/advancing technology? Humans are intelligent enough to disregard the concept of money and engineer great technology for the sake of mankind. Space colonization is not dependant on money, it is dependant on the human brain's drive to exceed.
I never see my ultimate vision panning out though. Too many people are still of Christian faith. Too many are self-conscious. Too many partake in politics. Too many worry about their 8-5 shift.

One of the hallmarks of fascism or uber nationalism is an anti-immigrant sentiment. Being against open boarders is not anti-immigrant. Everyone is nationalistic to some degree unless you're fine with having your country destroyed. And the free movement of capital necessitates a self regulating market that is NOT achieved by free trade. There's nothing free about free trade. Of course this was meant to push the world into globalism but it's just allowing some like China to cheat the system with their artificially low (slave) wages and currency manipulation. It's Hegelian. Create the problem for the solution you want (global governance). But you just can't eliminate nationalism that easily. People are fond of their cultures and see globalism as a threat. And now everyone is playing the currency devaluation game. So having open boarders, encouraging low wage earners to flow into any country so as to better compete with other slave nations or just to sustain itself is really just a race to the bottom. And as we get closer to the bottom that's when you will see uber nationalism. See Greece and other European countries with rising uber nationalistic tendencies in it's population. You don't lift populations by lowering others.

I live near the "hood". Unemployed, unemployable, low performance, zero skill folks in this area are having plenty of children. The nearby grocery store if full of women with two babies or more. My local experience is that this is an incredibly fertile situation!
