Europe Is Set To Mandate "Remote Stopping Device" In All Cars For Police Use

Tyler Durden's picture

Submitted by Mike Krieger of Liberty Blitzkrieg blog,

Well this sounds like one of the worst ideas I have heard of in a long time. Naturally, it would emerge from the EU, the sorriest excuse for a fake government the world has ever seen.

While I have reported previously on regulatory efforts to put all sorts of invasive mandatory devices in U.S. automobiles (from October of last year Big Brother is Coming to Your Car), this idea from the EU take things to a whole other level of insanity.

From the BBC:

A device that would enable police to stop vehicles remotely is being considered by an EU-wide official working group, it has emerged.

The feasibility of such technology is being examined by members of the European Network of Law Enforcement Technology Services (Enlets).

The technology could impact on both road safety and civil liberties.

Civil liberties? What are those?

The BBC understands it would take several years for any such technical proposal to be drafted.

One EU document, from 4 December, sets out the Enlets 2014-20 work programme as including: “Remote Stopping Vehicles”.

It says “this project will work on a technological solution that can be a ‘build in standard’ for all cars that enter the European market”.

It is not clear what cost implications that would have for car makers.

No, but the implications for the peasant class are crystal clear.

The work of Enlets is little known and has emerged in part through documents published by the civil liberties campaign group Statewatch.

These people are out of control.

Full article here.

[ZH: Perhaps this utter insanity would be more palatable with a different marketing angle? At least we can have a laugh as the encroachment on personal privacy and civil liberties continues unabated]

I think the headline on this post may have jumped the gun a little bit. There is something of a difference between "being considered by an EU working group" and "set to mandate." The article avers it would take several years just to get the proposal drafted. Given what we know of European bureaucratic efficiency, even that may be optimistic.

However, I agree that, should such a ridiculous notion ever be implemented, most people would simply disable and/or remove the device. Therefore, in order to have any hope of sustaining a workable concept, the EU group would have to be considering at least one of the following ideas. 1) Drivetrain integration. The remote stopping device is such an integral part of the drivetrain (or the electrical system) that removing it would physical disable the automobile. Problem? This is still easy enough to work around by installing replacement components. Another level of redundancy must be layered on somewhere, which reults in something like 2) Always-on transponder system. Using the cellular phone model, the remote stopping device would constantly maintain a link with a network from which it sends and receives signals. This would likely be acomplished through a minor modification of existing cell towers. If no signal is found, the car does not start. This theoretically prevents people from removing the device, but is still susceptible to workarounds. So for a final redundancy, the transponder link will be checked against some sort of parallel optical verification protocol. Traffic cameras will monitor cars as they go by. If a camera sees a car with no transponder signal, it alerts the police and they pull you over the old fashioned way. Problem? Complete lack of compliance overwhelms police response ability.

All of which leads me to believe that this "proposal" will be quietly round-filed before it ever sees the light of day. It's too expensive and difficult to implement. And besides, in a few years' time the EU will be up to its eyebrows in more pressing matters.

The power to hack and control cars already exists.  That they are going public in Europe just underscores that they are on their way to using it liberally and openly.  You have some good technical points but electronics have shrunk so much you need a microscope to find and now there is tech to power them w o battery or wires.

Nigel Farage broke that juicy bit about remote stoppers on KWN couple of days ago.

But well worth repeating many times over. Gosh, who'da thunk it??

They also have a similar device for airplanes of people they don't like.

Just dont buy a NEW vehicle. Fuck the bastards. Why buy a new vehicle anyway. You loose $$ a soon as you drive it off the lot.

More the 90% of millionaires do not buy NEW vehicles(their not stupid). Its all better than the Jones bullshit. Save your $$ and buy

an older car. Besides you'll need all the $$ you have when all SHIT hits the fan which is not far off.

Years ago, probably in '90s, I read/heard about a law making it illegal to interfere with govt tracking devices in vehicles.  Think it was fed law.  Anymore the law is superfluous with technology enabling trackers so small and cheap there can be multiple layers of them, virtually invisible.  They'll get power beamed to them or operate off stray energy.

Not to sound like a prick, but since the police has the legal power to stop you, what's weird about a proposal to make you... stop?

Or does there have to be a highway chace first? While endangering everyone else on the road?

a) it's not voluntary

b) this is going to be must-have gear for every crook, and not just the ones with badges

c) there's something perverse about you being forced to pay for something that has the exclusive designed purpose of doing you harm, isn't there?
