Putin on the surface seems easy to admire. I believe for a brief moment he even gave the West a brief moment of the benefit of the doubt. But the CIA's involvement in the Orange Revolution in 2004 squashed any hope the man might become a permanent ally. There still is cooperation with the West but it is disitegrating. Putin has been most shrewd about energy trade and consolidation. I believe him dangerous because he will have no qualms how many are killed if global hostilities break out. I used to boil a large pot on the stove every night, dredge out the heavy stuff from the bottom, and the oily stuff from the top and then use it for a shower in the morning. One you separated out about an inch of crud the water looked remarkably "real". And the meal looks "light" for breakfast, that is their heavy meal. They have come a long way since my first trip in '74.

If it truly was about sports, then yes the Canadian Hockey team would sleep in a dorm and that is what everybody would eat. Typical cuisine is heavy on meat - in kebabs, stews, or in stuffed pasta -- and eggs, especially in crepes -- or different types of bread topped or stuffed with egg and/or cheese.
Holy shit, I stayed in the broadcasting media quarters just opposite the Speed-Skating arena in Nagano and my quarters were palatial in comparison. Had a delicious free breakfast evey day and found a hole-in-the-wall restaurant where I could get a bowl of miso soup the size of a bathtub for $8.00. Believe me, if you're not one of the top, elite athletes, you don't do much sleeping during the Olympics, hence the reason condoms are everywhere! Indeed, the top Olympic sports are drinking, dancing and f@*^ing.

Just a couple of random thoughts, if I may. Please read all of them before deciding the point I am trying to make. If indeed, I am.
I've travelled more than most Westerners to Eastern Europe, and am an American who has lived in Germany/Switzerland/and Poland for most of my adult life.
I've experienced everything the reporters have tweeted. I know about the sewage systems that have been blocked by flushed toilet paper (hence, one is expected to place used TP in the trash). I never drink water from the tap in that part of the world, either, though I am more concerned by heavy metals than bacterial contamination. I've eaten plenty of food in Russia/Ukraine/Moldova, and, it is indeed different from the West, especially breakfast. Breakfast usually winds up being whatever was left over from dinner the previous evening. I've slept on beds that would make a concrete black seem comfortable by comparison. I've also seen plenty of manholes with the covers missing because they had been stolen.
I have never ridiculed the Russians for any of this, I just accepted it as being the way things are over there. Hell, I've always enjoyed "roughing it" during my visits, you might say. So. I have really mixed feeling about all this in Sochi.
1) If things are indeed as bad as is being claimed, then there should have been a full court press in Sochi to get things up to Western standards, if the world was to be invited there. (That said, part of me thinks that the spoiled western reporters need a dose of reality, on how the rest of the world lives). But still, this is the Olympics, for goodness' sake.
2) So, why wasn't such effort expended?
3) If it was, were the contractors incompetent or corrupt, or both? Underfunded?
4) Who, if anyone benefits from Russia being seen in such a bad light?
5) Surely, the local government officials had to be aware of what was at stake, in terms of Russia's global reputation.
6) We already know that the liberal press hates Russia and Putin. So why give them more ammunition?
