Iran Sends Warships Toward US In "Message To America"

Tyler Durden's picture

The strategy of appeasement, such as the one recently enacted by the US toward Iran, has its pros and cons: the pros are that the thawing in traditionally icy relations may lead to better trade relations and the spread of the debt-funded Pax Americana to one more country. There are also cons, like for example the "appeased" country no longer terrified of the "appeaser", whose resolve it will then commence testing until the credibility of its presumed superpower is tested by increasingly more. This is precisely what America's enemy number 1 (if mostly for public consumption) until recently, Iran, has just done.

Iranian warships dispatched to the Atlantic Ocean will travel close to U.S. maritime borders for the first time, a senior Iranian naval commander said Saturday. The fleet, consisting of a destroyer and a helicopter-carrying supply ship, began its voyage last month from the southern Iranian port city of Bandar Abbas. The ships, carrying some 30 navy academy cadets for training along with their regular crews, are on a three-month mission.

The commander of Iran's Northern Navy Fleet, Admiral Afshin Rezayee Haddad, said the vessels have already entered the Atlantic Ocean via waters near South Africa, the official IRNA news agency reported.

Reuters reports, citing Admiral Haddad, that "Iran's military fleet is approaching the United States' maritime borders, and this move has a message."

The message is simple: you give an inch, and they take a mile. For now Iran is just testing how much it can get away with as the US seeks to appease the nation as part of its latest diplomatic directive. And as long as the US does not respond vigorously, Iran will continue testing. Then again considering that the US 5th naval fleet is positioned in Iran's backyard just across the Persian Gulf, can anyone blame them?

More from Reuters:

Haddad, described as commander of the Iranian navy's northern fleet, said the vessels had started their voyage towards the Atlantic Ocean via "waters near South Africa", Fars reported.

Fars said the plan was part of "Iran's response to Washington's beefed up naval presence in the Persian Gulf.

In Washington, a U.S. defense official, speaking on condition of anonymity, cast doubt on any claims that the Iranian ships were approaching U.S. maritime borders. But the official added that "ships are free to operate in international waters."

The United States and its allies regularly stage naval exercises in the Gulf, saying they want to ensure freedom of navigation in the waterway through which 40 percent of the world's seaborne oil exports passes.

U.S. military facilities in the region include a base for its Fifth Fleet in the Gulf Arab kingdom of Bahrain. Iran sees the Gulf as its own backyard and believes it has a legitimate interest in expanding its influence there.

...

Fars said the Iranian navy had been developing its presence in international waters since 2010, regularly launching vessels in the Indian Ocean and the Gulf of Aden to protect Iranian ships from Somali pirates operating in the area.

And while we await to see what the US response to this unprovoked Iranian aggression (as it will be penned by the media) will be, here is the most recent breakdown of US Naval forces around the world protecting all of America's national interests.

Finally here is the just tweeted take by the Pentagon:

This is a non event. A destroyer and a helicopter? With trainees?

Even the Canadian Navy could easily take care of them. This is just some kind o.f visit to Cuba or Venezula, if they even get that far. Given the weather we have had this year the cold Atlantic air will send them home anyway. Shit regular -10C weather doesn't comapre to the 33C they left. They'll fuck off soon enuf

They may indeed visit Cuba as part of their cover story.  The real purpose of the mission, apart from its propaganda value back home, is probably to host a secret meeting between high level US and Iranian diplomats.  Either that, or they are exchanging something at sea. I'll leave it to the reader to speculate on what that might be.

Two ships with a bunch of kids aboard.

How about some good old American hospitality, why not invite them to some easy to get to port with good weather when scheduled to arrive and give them a tour of some of America's finest? Offer visas and see how many go back:-)

"Offer visas and see how many go back:-)"

Cold War anecdote:

1981, about the time of the rise of Solidarno??, we had 3 or 4 Polish trawlers docked in Vancouver.  This wasn't unusual - a lot of East Block fishing vessels used Canadian ports to resupply and for shore leave.  This time, however, most of the crews defected and they couldn't leave for lack of personnel.  So they flew new crews out, only to have them defect as well.  I don't know how they got their ships out of there - maybe they hired crews from the Philippines to take them to Cuba or something, but they were stuck there for months.

I know this because the refugee agency I did some work for had a sudden influx of Polish sailors.   Either things were really bad in Poland back then, or they saw the end of communism coming and decided to bail while they still could, using the East Block refugee gambit which was an automatic in back then.

An imploding middle class, Humana announcing its gonna tap the "risk corridor" built into ObamaCare to keep its bottom line from disintegrating...ya know, the usual stuff.

Oh, nobody heard about Humana?

"There’s been a lot of discussion about whether the risk adjustment tools embedded in ObamaCare amount to a bailout for the insurance companies, or are a reasonable feature of the law. There’s been far less information about how much money the insurers stand to gain from these measures, to offset their expected losses.

Now we have some hard numbers. Humana announced that it expects to tap the three risk adjustment mechanisms in ObamaCare for between $250 and $450 million in 2014. This amounts to about 25 percent of the insurer’s expected exchange revenue. This money is needed to offset losses that the insurer will take as a result of slower enrollment in its ObamaCare plans, and a skewed risk pool that weighs more heavily toward older and less healthy members than it originally budgeted.

More than half of the money will come from the $25 billion reinsurance pool that ObamaCare provides (collected through a tax on employer-sponsored health plans). The other half will come mostly from the risk corridors. Humana is expected to book the money as revenue to offset shortfalls between what it collects in exchange premiums and pays out in medical claims."

How would the average citizen be able to know the truth of such a headline?  It could be true,  but just as likely a useful distraction by the US government.   Another magician's trick, you know where there is an over the top show going on in one area to garner the attention of the audiece while the subterfuge is happening in another area overlooked by the crowd.

Naturally that is a ridiculous assumption, a tinfoil hat wearing conspiracy theory by a guy lving in his mothers basement eating hot pockets and watching porn.

But actually, if we check the records, I think Iranian ships have been traversing these waters since the early 2000s when Amadinejab got tight with Hugo Chavez and Fidel. I think their ships have been routinely docking at Cuba and Venezuela, so is this really "news???"

There's a big bear behind those Persian flag ships.

"Through this movement of Iranian war ships, we are witnessing the movement of chess pieces in this game of global, 3-D chess. We must keep in mind that this game has different boards, layers and pieces.  The Iranian ships are but one piece on one board. There are many others, each inter-related.

Simply put, Iran is a proxy nation of Russia, much like North Korea is a proxy nation of China. Both Russia and China have military and economic interests in Syria, which is the back door to Iran."

In ancient times Greece was invaded a couple of times by the Persian navy. Things did not go well for them. From memory their massive fleet was on one occasion wrecked by bad weather and the next time round they were routed at the battle of Salamis when their massive fleet was sucked into narrow straits by a bit of smart thinking by Themistocles.

On dry ground Alexander also gave them a few lessons in defeat as well.

I think they still remember those ancient lessons so I doubt there will be trouble.

Who knows the crew might even seek asylum in the USA.

Appeasement?

A small roll back in illegal sanctions designed to stop Iran from doing what it is already not doing is appeasement?

The US helped Iraq employ chemical weapons against Iran, overthrew Iran's democratically elected government to help British and American oil companies rape Iran's oil resources {giving the Iranians themselves something like 10 cents on the dollar for their oil}, along with Israel supports terror groups in Iran and asassinates civilians, all while surrounding it with military bases, parking the equivalent of Russia's navy off its coast, and constantly threatening it....   and a slight reduction in the sanctions is "appeasement"

The author is either ignorant or a shill for the neocons...

Which is it?

Here's Netanyhau lying about Iraqi nukes.

Here's a brief overview of the 20+ history of Netanyahu's claim that Iran was "months away" from a nuclear weapon.

 - similar reporting from the Washington Times

Here's a short article noting significant evidence that Netanyahu was involved in a nuclear smuggling ring - stealing from the US.  Do the Israelis have a hidden nuke in the US somewhere - to blame on Iran?

Here's Netanyahu being told to help bring about the Jewish Messiah  (Israel and Jews will dominate the world in this post Temple, Talmudic, and very unspiritual rendering of what a "Savior" is  - the harbinger of a Jewish Reich.  The whole video is worth a watch.

Here's evidence that Israel, or its neocon 5th column fabricated evidence precisely when it became clear Iran had stopped any computer design work on a nuclear weapon:   http://original.antiwar.com/justin/2007/12/10/iran-nukes-and-the-laptop-...

Our civilian and military intelligence agencies have reached consensus positions that Iran is not working on a nuke - although one could hardly blame them for wanting the deterrent.

After all, Israel and it's 5th column in the US really, really want that war.  And why not lie, lie again?

It worked in Iraq, after all. And, those were lies, ladies and gentlemen, not mistaken interpretation of intelligence.

What's a million Aye-rab dead for the sake of Greater Israel?

I wish more people knew about our history with Iran. After the revolution they actually disbanded their military having understood Thomas Jefferson that a standing army is a threat to a republic.

Then we assisted Saddam Hussein in his war with Iran. They were caught completely off guard. The Iranians have been heavily militarized since that time.
