House Passes Clean Debt Ceiling 221-201 With Vast Majority Of Republicans Voting Against

Tyler Durden's picture

The clean debt ceiling bill has just passed the House where it got the required majority in a 221 to 201 final vote, with just 28 Republicans voting Yea (and 199 voting Nay) - a vote that has made history with the fewest number of votes from a majority on a bill that passed the House since 1991. It also means means that with a Senate passage assured, the US can now spend away until March 15, 2015. The final breakdown:

  • GOP: Yea - 28; Nay -199
  • DEM: Yea - 193; Nay -2
  • Total: Yea - 221; Nay - 201

And one for the history books:

Considering that the vast majority of Republicans voted against John Boehner's latest "plan" to do the Democrats' work for them, and pass a clean debt ceiling, perhaps it is time to look for a speaker who represents the interests of more than just a tiny fraction of the party... and the Democrats of course.

Roll call adds:

Of the 28 Republicans voting for the debt ceiling, there were only four members of GOP leadership: Speaker John A. Boehner of Ohio, Majority Leader Eric Cantor of Virginia, Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy of California, and Chief Deputy Whip Peter Roskam of Illinois. As a matter of principle, the speaker rarely votes, making this one particularly notable.

Many of the first votes for the debt ceiling came from chairmen of various committees. Of the chairmen voting for the bill, there were: Ways and Means Chairman Dave Camp of Michigan, Oversight and Government Reform Chairman Darrell Issa of California, Appropriations Chairman Harold Rogers of Kentucky, Foreign Affairs Chairman Ed Royce of California, Armed Services Chairman Howard “Buck” McKeon of California and Natural Resources Chairman Doc Hastings of Washington.

That means 15 other GOP committee chairmen voted against the measure, including Budget Chairman Paul D. Ryan of Wisconsin.

GOP Moderates

Some Republicans who fall along a more centrist point on the political spectrum — the same ones who fought for a “clean” bill to fund federal operations during the government shutdown — voted “yes” on Tuesday. They include Charlie Dent of Pennsylvania and three New Yorkers: Michael G. Grimm, Peter T. King and Richard Hanna.

Retiring Republicans

The politically tricky vote for a debt ceiling was made easier for those Republicans who are retiring. Included in that group is McKeon, Frank R. Wolf of Virginia, Jon Runyan of New Jersey and Howard Coble of North Carolina.

Vulnerable Republicans

Vulnerable Republicans were faced with a choice about how to vote Tuesday night. These Republicans aren’t vulnerable because they face tough primary challengers from the right; they’re vulnerable because they reside in districts with light Republican support. Those lawmakers facing bruising re-election bids in November who voted with Democrats are: David Valadao and Gary G. Miller of California, Frank A. LoBiondo of New Jersey, Patrick Meehan of Pennsylvania and Dave Reichert of Washington.

“I’m grateful to the speaker and the Republican leadership for giving this House this opportunity to act in a way that is consistent with the constitution,” said Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., speaking in the chamber in advance of the vote. “I thank my Democratic colleagues for never wavering from this position and standing firm on behalf of all Americans.”

It's a no win vote for both sides. I've followed politics for a long time and I've never seen a more gutless bunch. Doing the right thing has never been easy but with todays media never holding anyone accountable it's a given that now one day in the future our debt will matter and it will ruin all.

To all you idiots who downvoted me, the Senate was just forced by Cruz to require 60 votes for the Senate version to pass. McConnell had to go find enough Republicans to vote for the bill instead of allowing them to all vote NAY. LOL! It's amazing how you folks manage to survive each day must less read message boards and vote in elections. If you want to know why things are so fucked, look in the mirror.

He has just guaranteed that the slim majority in the house will be replaced by a democrat majority who will speed 'the end' along.

How?  Well I'll guess that every republican voting for this will be ousted in November.

And I would venture a guess that you understand that when your income is sufficient to pay your mortgage, car payment and groceries, you are not in default. Just because you had been borrowing money every year so that you could keep your promise to give your nephew some money every week, pay for your membership to the gym, get a hooker every Saturday, buy ammo for the guy down the street to do target shooting, etc etc and now you find that you don't want to borrow any more to support these things, doesn't mean you are in default. It means you may have to break a few promises you never should have made to begin with.

Tue, 02/11/2014 - 23:59 | 4426748 Debt Slave
Debt Slave's picture

Really, I really do understand.

I don't need to bullshit. It's very simple. If the government balances the budget, it stops borrowing money that the Fed prints up out of thin air. It means the bloated bond market goes into the toilet. It means Goldman Sachs and JPM will have to find other swindles and maybe even go bankrupt. It means there will be no "growth" since every penny of every dollar is borrowed into circulation, mainly by the government selling it's debt for endless wars and stupid domestic waste. Right now the miniscule "growth" we have had over the last five years is the result of printing and spending trillions of inflated dollars, hot off the press.

The economy is not created by the government borrowing and spending. That is how money is created. What we really have here is an economy that is operating in spite of the government's borrowing and spending. If what you are saying has any merit at all, then you must concede that the government must manage the economy or it all goes to hell. A government that is managed by idiots and charlitans like Pelosi, Reid, Boehner, and Obama.

With morons like that in charge, I submit to you that it is going to go to hell anyway, and in a MUCH bigger way.

You see, it IS possible to have an economy based on something other than debt. We could have an economy based on productive wealth, but then that leaves the parasites (who hate work) in the cold and since they are currently in charge, there is no way they are ever going to allow that to happen.

The government could balance it's budget and issue debt free currency instead of using a private banking cartel and paying interest for the privelege of issuing and spending it's own money. It's all just a matter of national priorities.

The economic consequences of a drop in Federal spending?

     (1) A quick, short collapse, followed by a reset on debt, loss of "surplus population", world depression / famines / widespread death & destruction, followed by

     (2) A long, slow, protracted rebuilding of what is absolutely essential to survival, with nothing left over for trivia, political correctness, ecomadness, waste, fraud & abuse; reduced Federal power / drag on the economy (what's left), less / ignored regulations, barter for a while, agriculture renewal and slow recovery

The economic consequences of a continuation of Federal spending at current levels?

     (A) A long, slow, protracted and painful default process, currency collapse, slow starvation and loss of industrial activity, followed by

     (1) and (2) above.

How do you like your chaos, hot or served iced with pain and suffering?

If federal spending were cut, unproductive enterprises currently sustained by that spending would fail, and the resources which they currently employ would be freed up for productive use, resulting in an increase in total production.

An increase in federal spending has the opposite effect; resources currently employed in productive enterprises are forcibly  redirected to unproductive enterprises, resulting in a drop in total production.

Anyway, speaking of economic illiteracy, you're an MMT retard, correct? You think that reducing the public debt will reduce private savings, due to your retarded accounting tautology? Amiright?

It's a myth that the US has to default because it needs more money to spend on government programs. Default is a result of poor management of accounting of revenues & expeditures. A default is just a honest way of saying we have no more money. THe democrats, & Boehnor rather wait until the global markets dump US government bonds & force inflation on the people, because in the meantime, it's politically expedient for the short term, and the present to keep on borrowing, and spending money. Hyperinflation, and default are a difference without a difference. You simply ran out of money in both cases, or more accurately purchasing power. Boehner, and democrats will never stop borrowing, the debt ceiling will increase, and increase, until investors decide that it ain't worth it anymore. I doubt even republicans would make substantial cuts to government spending. They usually go for little cuts, here, and there, like food stamps, what not. Consider the fact they actually defended Medicare Part D, & they are always wanting to increaswe military spending.

You are giving a yoeman's effort j. Unfortunately, economic illeteracy runs rampant. Nonsense about balanced budgets sounds pleasing, but few understand what happens on the other side.

I try to be optimistic, but I fear the Oligarchs have fully routed us. They have average middle class citizens speaking their language about balanced budgets and unfunded liabilities. The Oligarchs have average middle class citizens believing that their assests don't belong to them. It's quite breathtaking. Sadistic, but very impressive. I suppose the adage about never underestimating the stupidity of the American public applies.

Progressives? You mean people like Teddy Roosevelt? Or woman's suffrage? Or moving children out of factories? Are those the progressives you are referring to? I'm with you on the big bank and financial services industry, and their political puppets, unfortunately the rest of your post is shit.

The progressives of today are no Teddy Roosevelt. Teddy was a real man. He took a bullet to the chest and went on to give his speech before getting medical treatment. Progressives of today are the most brainwashed cheerleaders for their government idols. Progressivism is the religion of the weak-minded. Teddy would put his boot up the ass of your modern progressive becuase they are such pathetic pussies.

So you consider youself a progressive? Hmm.

For those keeping score at home Republican's 54 Democrat's 41(Presidential Debt ceiling increases since Harry Truman). Oh who am I kidding there is only one party, and to paraphrase George Carlin "you are not invited". At this point it doesn't matter, if "we" can't pay back 18 trillion why not make it 50. I'm just hoping to make it to 80 and if I get sick they can give me 3 hookers and a hot dose. The new Medicare Medicaid program.

Why don't you do a little research and learn about Congress.

They micromanage very little, indeed.

Just as those portions of the government responsible for financial oversight don't engage in much of that... unless it comes to the probably illegal Iran sanctions - Treasury has lots of dual citizens working day and night on that.

Do you need another link to explain the difference between the debt ceiling and continuing resolution?

As far as micro managing things, please explain the tax code?

Tax Code: The body of Federal law which incentivises young women to have babies out of a stable relationship, funnels benefits to public employee unions, allows corrupt corporate managers to pass off losses to the ever shrinking middle class; a massive aggregation of moved commas and stilted grammar that almost defies any analysis.

For further explanation my hourly rate is $1274/HR.  (plus tax)

Do NOT think for one minute that many of the Republicans who voted against the bill are actually against it, or are against Boehner. This is the 'best' re-election result for them. Now they will not be blamed for a debt ceiling crisis - and they get to say they voted against raising the debt limit - even though they knew it would pass if Boehner brought it up. We now face the new reality of 'Hope and Change'. Place your 'Hope' in gold, and stack your pre-1965 'Change'.

The compound interest paradox provides the explanation of why it is a mathematical requirement to constantly create more debt, and why the Fed and our owners cannot allow deflation. The majority of Republicans voting against raising the debt limit is political grandstanding. If no democrat voted yes, the GOP would still have to pass it all by themselves.

"Winning" the Presidency is like being first in a three-legged race.  Sure, you got to the finish line b 4 all others, but you are still tied to the other around your bound leg, you smell like old mold, and if you attempt to do anyting but stand still, you fall flat on your face.

Just like everyone else who supposedly lost.

I wish to Kalki that she had won 6.5 years ago, because by now we would only have to endure that sickly doughy face, cottage cheese thighs, and whining entitlement riddled voice for 1.5 more years and then she and her disciples can go off and have a circle jerk about the loss of the most "powerful woman in the world".

Why didn't I just join the democratic party for one year and work for her campaign just to finally be rid of her in 18 months instead of having to once again listen to the lesbian, homosensual, feminazi, sidney blumenthal and other men who sit down to pee contingent, the befouled, stinky hot-breathing dragons who have placed all their bets on the worst woman in the world to get a chance at 4-8 yrs in the jump seat of AF1?
