Obama Administration Embeds "Government Researchers" To Monitor Media Organizations

Tyler Durden's picture

Submitted by Mike Krieger of Liberty Blitzkrieg blog,

Last week, I highlighted the fact that the latest Press Freedom Index showcased a 13 point plunge in America’s press freedom to an embarrassing #46 position in the global ranking. If the authoritarians in the Obama Administration have their way, this country is set to fall much further in next year’s index.

Incredibly, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is set to roll out something called the Critical Information Needs study, which will embed government “researchers” into media organizations around the nation to make sure they are doing their job properly.

No this isn’t “conspiracy theory.” It is so real, and represents such a threat to the First Amendment, that a current FCC commissioner, Ajit Pai, recently wrote an Op-Ed in the Wall Street Journal, warning Americans of this scheme. He writes:

News organizations often disagree about what Americans need to know. MSNBC, for example, apparently believes that traffic in Fort Lee, N.J., is the crisis of our time. Fox News, on the other hand, chooses to cover the September 2012 attacks on the U.S. diplomatic compound in Benghazi more heavily than other networks. The American people, for their part, disagree about what they want to watch.

But everyone should agree on this: The government has no place pressuring media organizations into covering certain stories.

Unfortunately, the Federal Communications Commission, where I am a commissioner, does not agree. Last May the FCC proposed an initiative to thrust the federal government into newsrooms across the country. With its “Multi-Market Study of Critical Information Needs,” or CIN, the agency plans to send researchers to grill reporters, editors and station owners about how they decide which stories to run. A field test in Columbia, S.C., is scheduled to begin this spring.

The purpose of the CIN, according to the FCC, is to ferret out information from television and radio broadcasters about “the process by which stories are selected” and how often stations cover “critical information needs,” along with “perceived station bias” and “perceived responsiveness to underserved populations.”

I have no idea what country I am living in at this point.

How does the FCC plan to dig up all that information? First, the agency selected eight categories of “critical information” such as the “environment” and “economic opportunities,” that it believes local newscasters should cover. It plans to ask station managers, news directors, journalists, television anchors and on-air reporters to tell the government about their “news philosophy” and how the station ensures that the community gets critical information.

Participation in the Critical Information Needs study is voluntary—in theory. Unlike the opinion surveys that Americans see on a daily basis and either answer or not, as they wish, the FCC’s queries may be hard for the broadcasters to ignore. They would be out of business without an FCC license, which must be renewed every eight years.

Should all stations follow MSNBC’s example and cut away from a discussion with a former congresswoman about the National Security Agency’s collection of phone records to offer live coverage of Justin Bieber‘s bond hearing? As a consumer of news, I have an opinion. But my opinion shouldn’t matter more than anyone else’s merely because I happen to work at the FCC.

I am simply speechless.

Read the full Op-Ed here.

So who runs the corps.  Who owns them?  The corporate interests are bad enough, but what about the political slant of the managers?

And why do they often seem to largly put the same news stories in front of us... zimmerman...twerking....  human interest fluff... sochi follies....

We're... #46 in the World for Press Freedom! It took us 50 Years to get here... But we made it!

We need to celebrate this momentous occassion by getting a collection for t-shirts to the likes of Wa-PO, WSJ and NYT staff with those words emblazoned on the front and back Congratulations ladies and gents for a cover-up Well Done!

Apparently, #46 is too high on the list for the .gov.  Gotta push that number lower.  .gov is getting more "in your face" everyday.  Won't be long before they just announce all media will be state-run.  There will be no licenses, all media employees will be federal employees.

This is why I don't watch anything anymore. I've long been "off the grid," at least media-wise. Ironically, it was the Fox News coverage of the invasion of Iraq, the first instance of embedded journalism that I know of, which did it for me. I hate the word "embed" as an adjective applied to journalism. It is nothing less than an open admission of "we control the horizontal and the vertical, and most importantly we control the narrative."

Right. And broadcasters use the public airways for free because they supposedly serve the public interest. But instead of serving the public interest, they keep the American public uninformed by serving up irrelevant bullshit such as what Millie Cyrus did yesterday.

The oligarchs who own our mass media and decide what the American public sees and hears like to keep the sheep in the dark. The Wall Street Journal's editorial page is little more that these oligarchs' loud speaker. And the people outraged because the FCC is seeking data that will prove the media keeps us uninformed are little more that the oligarchs' useful idiots.

Why don't you correlate that with those that vote in contestable Congressional districts...

And/Or show that choice of MSM News influences the vote...

Then we be talking...

However if that could be demonstated, I am sure that we would have heard of it...

In other words the corporate MSM is basically irrelevant...

FWIW, the times I do happen to see MSM news, I see more infotainment than anything resembling news...

Anyway, show me numbers if you can find them, I can be convinced that I am wrong if you can show the right data...

Until then as far as I am concerned the MSM news influences nothing...

Who gives a rat f$ck about the level of influence?  Who cares that most of corporate news is a tool to dumb down the public by focusing on the flashy sugar (Beiber, Lardassians) vice the substance of whole grains and veggies (stories on corruption in the corporate and gov world)?  This specific story is about the f-cking arrogance of political commissars to dictate what is important information that must be presented, or more likely, hidden from the public.  Even more to the point, the bottom line of the final study can easily be written now (because it probably has already been written):

"Fox News has demonstrated persistent and systemic bias.  MSNBC is the most insightful and unbiased television media outlet."

The fact that they don't do their job of reporting the news accurately and objectively means everything. Many of you people note that the country has been going downhill for several decades. The fact that the news media have been lying whores for the left/liberals/feminists and the Democratic Party is a major reason why. Think of it this way, if it didn't matter why would a left wing administration go out of its way to muscle a overwhelmingly liberal media even further to the left.

Things are getting worse so they need more aggressive lying on the part of their media allies. Also, there is an election coming up, they need to ratchet up the propaganda. Of course it matters, if it didn't you wouldn't be coming to this site every fucking day you passive aggressive contrarian pussy.

CNN's fuckery in Iraq was unreal - the '91 sound stage stuff I can forgive, but remember Baghdad Dan or whoever - the staged shooting with CIAnderson "bar room handjobs" Cooper?

How people could have a hard time accepting that foreign states interfering in Syria tried to frame Assad for using the sarin gas they had themselves provided to the rebels, as an excuse to justify the invasion/regime change  they've wanted for years...  is beyond me.. it takes 5 minutes of googling if you're capable of reading as fast as even an average college student.

But then even Hersh had a hard time presenting his findings in the US.

The reason The One spoke of the "evidence" in the way he did was a lot of the spooks, and DIA, refused to sign off on it as the rank and file were beginning to loudly grumble about the obvious 7 countries/5 years false flag bullshit of it all.

But yeah - people just forget that CNN has repeatedly got caught fucking around, and that's leaving aside having former AIPACer Wolf Blitzer covering the ME for us....

They lied about Vietnam.  They lied about Iraq and the press complied.  Why on earth do you think they wouldnt lie about Syria and Iran when neocon position papers have for years talked about remaking or reshaping the middle east... these are countries which have been on the hitlist since before Clark's 7 countries 5 years speeches.

Are you that much of a partisan shill, really?

Yes, Flak - the preponderance of the credible evidence is that the sarin gas was used by foreign funded and armed rebels in order to pin the blame on Assad, so the redline would be crossed and America could act as Al Qaeda's air force.  Seymour Hersh's article does a good job of exposing the effort to "fit the facts around the goal".   US intelligence would not back the assessment.  Obama only backed down and went to Congress because of public and intelligence agency resistance.

Am I 100% positive - of course not, but that's what the preponderence of the credible evidence suggests.  What fucking evidence do you have, dummy?

They're just looking for an excuse.  You'd be willing to believe it if only it was a republican or "tea party " member in office, you dumb, easily led cunt.

Glad ZH posted this.  This is troubling not just on its face, because it is likely that there is a lot more going on than this.  They already have spooks greenlighting/okaying stories at the networks and big newspapers like, certainly the times.

This is in addition to the controls that come with consolidated corporate ownership [about 6 mega corps] as well as ownership and control by the usual suspects at all of the tv news outlets and most of the top 20 circ papers.

Which is why the internet isn't safe for long.  Controls will be needed.

Well it's here! First they use the country's physical security to create information gathering that we find from an individual is collected in incredible detail using every source imaginable to violate our Constitutional rights of privacy by using General Warrants specifically outlawed by our Fourth Amendment. Their followers defend it as necessary for our safety!

Then we have persecution of political groups against this administration who uses the Agencies of our government to prosecute them in the most vicious ways to teach a lesson.

Now they are going to modulate and later modify what we see and hear from our "Free" Media.

It's time for Americans to put aside politics and take up our Constitution! On our private information, Our 4th Amendment is being violated! It is unconstitutional to issue General Warrants! There is no argument to that!

There is no doubt from the punishing activities that took place on citizens  by the Agencies of our government to keep them from having certain incorporation structures that others including our president has occurred. Our Agencies went in and terrified innocents.

And now, the mandate that the FCC watch dogs will go into the media and intimidate and modify information we receive from what our Constitution guarantees as a Free press away from government intrusion.

Please put aside political leanings. We are becoming the Soviet Union under Lenin and later Khrushchev under their rules of government. This will effect all liberal and conservative.

DO YOU WANT TO BE The Generations that surrendered our Constitutional Freedoms that our children will understand under servitude years from now?

Don't fight this for political reasons. Fight this for our children's futures!

When Castro came to power he introduced "embedded researches" in the press.

They would read and rate each article published by any journalist and their evaluation printed just below the article.

That lasted for a while after which all newspapers were confiscated and closed down.

Just a few months ago the Shield Law became a hot topic among independent journalists. This new and IMHO, frightening development may be related.

Who's a journalist? Sen. Dianne Feinstein wants to draw a line

http://www.latimes.com/opinion/opinion-la/la-ol-dianne-feinstein-congres...

When I teach journalism classes, I like to shock the students by telling them that journalists aren’t professionals in the sense that doctors, lawyers, accountants or even beauticians are.

You don’t need a license or a degree to work as a reporter or editor in this country; in fact, if Congress or a state decided to license journalists the Supreme Court surely would blow its 1st Amendment whistle.

And yet ... though government doesn’t license journalists, for decades it has defined journalists for certain purposes. Exhibit A: Although the Supreme Court has rejected the idea that reporters have a 1st Amendment right to protect the identities of their confidential sources, most states provide a “privilege” to that effect.

California’s so-called shield law -- part of the state Constitution -- says reporters and editors for newspapers, magazines and broadcast news organizations can’t be held in contempt for refusing to identify a source or turn over unpublished information. In 2006, the California Court of Appeal extended the protection of the shield law to  “news-oriented websites.”

Any legal definition of “journalist” can be nitpicked. For example, Pennsylvania’s shield law covers journalists who work for a publication of “general circulation,” which would seem to exclude student journalists and reporters for religious, union and other special-interest publications.

"the press" in the 1st meant and should be taken to mean the printed word, not journalists or newspapers.

The fuckwits on the left railed against Citizens United both because they love the idea of the state being able to jail people they don't like for making a documentary, and because they take 'press' to cover their beloved newspapers, even though the Times for example.. is a fucking corporation.

the revelation that obama is a fascist is even more shocking that the revelation that george bush is a globalist. these people have no more control of the system than you or i. you would imagine that at some point one of them would throw up their hands, and say i can't do this! but of course they don't constantly promote you even though you failed at your last job unless they have something in mind. and there is no greater hubris than that born of dubious achievment, gosh they really do love me?. and the best way to discourage this behavior is to make an example of it, but are demonstrators willing to lay seige to the WH {Kiev?} in order to make the point? and what is that point anyway, the protestors want to be part of the EU? they deserve more than rubber bullets for stupidity. [me thinks the MSM has got it wrong again] this might be the decline of all central government power, why is the US not leading the change? obama has already sanctioned the american middle class. whats wrong with americans that they cant' see they worse off than a bunch of russian peasants.

One of the ugly realities of modern communication is the ability to send out millions of messages directly and unfiltered,  lends itself to be used in unsavory ways or to gain advantage. This becomes a real problem when one person or a small group controls the message and uses an army of tax paid employees to shape, spin, and send it forth.

Capitalizing on the possibilities of the digital age, the Obama White House is generating its own content like no president before, and refining its media strategies in the second term in hopes of telling a more compelling story than in the first. This takes the idea of the bully pulpit to a new and dangerous level. More on this White House propaganda machine below,

I had worked hard on the copy, turned it in to the Desk, and was getting a cup of joe when Jim, the editor, walked up.

"Bill, go see the PO."

I froze. Political Officer? What had I done wrong? "Wha... what is it, Jim?"

He looked at me with concern. "I don't know, Bill. Shit, who knows anything nowadays? Just go see him, now!

I left my coffee and scrambled down the hall to the PO's Office.

***

The PO was a little guy with a clubbed foot. He could be charming but also very biting in his comments. Somehow, he always knew the latest scandal before I did.

"Ah, hello, Smith."
"Hello, Mr Gribbles. I heard you wanted to see me."
"What's wrong with this copy on Washington DC events?" He asked, handing it back to me. I began reading, nervously. I glanced at Gribbles and he wearing a sardonic smile. I could feel the sweat forming as I stared at the silver epaulets on his black uniform.

"Come now, Mr Smith, I have not got all day."
"Uh, I can't find anything, sir." Shit. Was I going to end up like Johnson, lose my journo license and take up  hawking O-Phones on the streets? I shuddered. What had I done? I looked at Gribbles, nervously.

"Oh, very well, you left out 'Great and Glorious' before our Leader's name," Gribbles said, ominously.

"Sorry, sir. I was in a hurry. I'll fix it immediately."

"Excellent, Mr Smith! You have done this twice. Am I going to have to keep an extra eye on you?"

"Nossir. I'll try to do better. I will do better. For you and our Leader."

"Excellent response, Mr Smith. I think we will get along fine. Now, hurry up, chop chop!"

It is clearly written with broad agency announcements for information and intelligence,  so cannot be plausible denied or disproven, that obscure sections/sectors/departments within the US military [industrial complex and virtual machine] are also into exploration and researching development of reality manipulating and monitoring and mentoring for the means of preserving and providing offensive security defence for systems in attack command and control. …… with US tax dollars and QE funds just doing IT and their own thing, y’all.

.

It does have one a’pondering and a’wondering and a’wandering down tracks though, which would have one asking whether the present White House/Obama Administration and Federal Government and Military and Cyber Commands are in competition with each other for the spoils of Power Command and Control Warefare, with it being just too big a small step for men and a giant quantum leap for their kind and a bridge too far for them to cross together, in cahoots with each other and conspiring to create a Unified State of Affairs.

.

It is wise to consider and realise that such barriers do not afflict or affect or infect and infest others, as may be clearly enough surmised and be ably enough supported by the evidence presented in the cryptic submissions which can be read here …… http://www.ur2die4.com/140221/ ..... so don't let it be said by anyone or anything that you were never told and forewarned and forearmed.

.

IT tells a tale which is not a false trail however improbable one views the possibility. Some, and they be more than just a few and many, might even recognise it as quite laudable and noble honest gospel and support it and in so doing reinforce and invigorate it and even dynamically be enabled to reconfigure it personally with valid valuable valued system input for future systems outputting/sharing.

.

Quite whether that be Proprietary Intellectual Property claimed to belong to the Wild Wacky West rather than Exotic Erotic East is another totally different question and a quite private and pirate matter to be considered although most probably not in public lest it terrify and terrorise the natives.

not one but two pussy riot / russia bad stories in the NYT today.

Why do they need minders when the major newspapers and newsstations are owned and run by the usual suspects who hate putin for ejecting their rapacious oligarch cousins from his country?

I guess our civil liberties over here are all secure then, given the lack of coverage and all.

" But everyone should agree on this: The government has no place pressuring media organizations into covering certain stories. "

Niet niet tovaritch, not everyone should agree on this. One of the duties of the government , is to prevent too much dangerous neuronal activity in Americans brains. It's a sanitary measure. Seeing what fiasco Obamacare seems to be, the government has wisely decided to prevent brain surgery, at all cost.

That's why, there will still be free press ...  you will have different newspapers : The New-York Pravda, The Washington Pravda, The Sacramento Pravda, The ..... , ....

See ? All those different newspapers .....

with exactly the same contents, of course.

I told you. There is NO "CONSTITUTION" and no "United States", it was Usurped by the installation of British foreign agent Barack Hussein Obama, born British due to a British subject father. There is a reason that the Central bankers want an illegal entity in the Oval Office (When there is no legal "executor of the laws" then there is no law, and the "law" is only what evil men say it is). When ZH starts talking about this, then it will be truly subversive. As of now telling the truth is a revolutionary act--- and we aren't there yet,

Subversive?  .gov has spent multiple trillions to keep the fantasy that "all is normal" going, when in fact the real economy is dead (as measured by the production of value). 90% of comments on ZH could be deemed subversive. ZH'ers, myself included, forget that this site represents a microscopic % of population. (see Dec 31st best of ZH) The top 5 rated stories garnered just over 200.000 hits. By the time the point of veiw expressed on ZH is embraced by 3% of population, the anti-subversive laws will have already been implemented. For now, those who see the horrific reality of the world economy, and the propaganda being spewed to keep the masses comfortable in their slavery, are less than a single flea on an elephant.

This is a widely read blog. The truth of the Usurpation of the Presidency and knowledge of it could be spread far and wide by talking about it here. The beatings will continue as long as Obama the domestic enemy Usurper stays in office. Removing him would be a revolutionary act, and the first step in recovering US Citizen sovereignty.

Obama does not receive benefit of the "de facto officer" doctrine, since he has acted in bad faith, and millions are aware of the Usurpation. But many more need to become aware.

One of my biggest concerns about the NSA spying on Americans how much was being spent, because if we are spending a lot of money on this consider it a big red flag. It recently came out thanks to information leaked by  Edward Snowden that the "black budget" last year was a massive 52 billion dollars.

This is the money used in "secret" spy operations, and it is enough to send shivers down the back of those that have read about the totalitarian society of Oceania described in George Orwell's novel Nineteen Eighty-Four. In Orwell's novel, all citizens of Oceania are monitored by cameras and are fed fabricated news stories by the government. More on the drirection we are moving in the post below,
