The Eastern Ukrainians Are Revolting

Tyler Durden's picture

It is hardly surprising, given the drastically divided nation, that when Vitali Klitschko's pro-European political party ventured to Kerch - a city of the eastern edge of Ukraine in the Crimea region - things did not go entirely according to plan... This is the region that Russia has stated it is willing to go to war over and is deep in the pro-Russia territory... headlines galore are coming out of Ukraine but all that matters now is the Russian response...

Especially after Tymoshenko's earlier comments:

  • *TYMOSHENKO URGES PROTESTERS TO STAY IN INDEPENDENCE SQUARE
  • *UKRAINIANS OBLIGED TO BRING YANUKOVYCH BACK TO KIEV: TYMOSHENKO
  • *TYMOSHENKO: UKRAINE MAY BRING CHANGES IN OTHER EX-SOVIET STATES
  • *TYMOSHENKO: UKRAINE WILL HELP OTHER COUNTRIES UNDER `DICTATORS'

A EuroMaidan meeting does not go quite as planned in the east/west of Ukraine...

As is clear from this map - the nation is desparately divided (Kerch is on the eastern corner of the Crimea peninsula at the bottom on the map)...

As Russia warned before...

"If Ukraine breaks apart, it will trigger a war,” the official said. “They will lose Crimea first [because] we will go in and protect [it], just as we did in Georgia.” In August 2008, Russian troops invaded Georgia after the Georgian military launched a surprise attack on the separatist region of South Ossetia in an effort to establish its dominance over the republic.

...

The brief conflict with Georgia pitted Russia indirectly against the US and Nato, which had earlier tried to put Georgia on a path to Nato membership. The Kremlin regards the Georgian conflict as the biggest stand-off between Russia and the west since the end of the Cold War and it has fed determination in Moscow to push back against what it believes to be western attempts to contain Russia.

...

The warning of a similar scenario comes because Ukraine’s civil conflict has fanned tension in Crimea. On the peninsula, located on the northern coast of the Black Sea where Russia’s Black Sea Fleet is stationed, ethnic Russians make up almost 60 per cent of the population, with Ukrainians and Crimean Tatars accounting for the rest.

...

Volodymyr Konstantinov, speaker of Crimea’s parliament, said on Thursday that the region might try to secede from Ukraine if the country split. “It is possible, if the country breaks apart,” he told the Russian news agency Interfax. “And everything is moving towards that.” Russian media also quoted him as saying Crimeans might turn to Russia for protection.

Some humor might help...

But it's pretty clear who they blame...

Its beyond any shadow of doubt (now) that O'Barry is as corrupt as they come, so he's got that going for him, in certain gang circles...lol.

But...as far as his leading this nation into war, we've already cut his nuts off in Syria, thats where they can be found...which is a good thing. Putin already knows this, so it'll be up to the military might and "high minded diplomacy" of the EU (ROTFL!!!) to sort this one out for themselves.

Not us.

I suspect that the Russians could come to some agreement with the Germans over how to split Poland.  ;-)

They don't want or need Hungary, would like t to have direct access to Serbia, Montenegro and the Adriatic.   They'd like to have a permanent port on Cyprus even more, but the Brits won't leave.  If they did, the US would take over in a heartbeat.  In which case the Russians would rather have the Brits stay put.

Turkey has always played on both sides, while looking out for its own interests.  They know human nature and history too well, to do otherwise.

I just really really good at this topic, ranging from lying about the number of deaths from hunger and ending the lie that most of the dead were ethnic Ukrainians. Stalin did not fight with nationality. Stalin fought with the class of prosperous peasants of any nationality.

- Do you know where it came from the word "famine"?
- Do you know what year it first appeared?
- You know exactly who coined the word in order to give visibility famine genocide?

In the event of that East/West split of Ukraine the offensive ballistic missiles that the NATO "ass puppet" will have pointed at Russia from the Western side...  Notice how I left out the use of the words "Missile Defense Shield" that of course is their to protect Russia in the event Iran decides to attack Eastern Europe but that NATO and the U.S. refuse to include Russia in regarding it's "construction" even though they signed a treaty with the U.S. for inclusion.

I hate to say it but Stalin knew the slimy Zionist Jew bastards in England an the U.S. would have won the game had their not been an Iron Curtain and he had a good reason to be paranoid.

It has nothing to do with missiles or jooooos. They got the missiles trained on Russia in Poland and other states. It just makes it easier to launch them closer they don't get an advantage on range or reach just the amount they could fire off in one shot since they can get closer using a sub for example and launch off a few missiles at any time. Only way it become about missiles is if the Crimea doesn't stay under Russian control and I don't just mean as far as missile shields goes. This all about power and controlling the pricing of it to the preferred customer aka the EU and Europe in general. All the other issues are of minor consequence.

Agree, don't think Crimea is going to be under anyones control other than Russia, but it doesn't help to have the Country split in two with offensive missiles pointed at them.

We both know that there is no such thing as a "Missile Defense Shield", there are only "offensive" missiles which is why the farce of an Iranian threat is so absurd.

If that is the case then the Russians will most likely make it clear under no uncertain terms what happens next and the US is going to wind up a pariah if they push the issue. The Russians won't blink if the stakes are high enough.

I still disagree about the missiles because this isn't the 1960's anymore and they have 1st strike capability to hit the east/west coast via sub fleets if they really want to. US has the same capability to do so from the Black Sea so grabing the Ukraine strictly for missiles doesn't get them any closer plus the minute they put in missile batteries the Russians are going to have everything targeted 24/7 anyways from the Crimea and Black Sea so it basically a one strike volley (deadly but only a single volley) and that is it. Submarine on the other hand can get multiple shots off with the right maneuvering.

Guess it all depends Dewey on the number of "blackhole" submarines the Russians and Chinese can and already have deployed that carry their strategic nuclear arsenal.

I think it's safe to say that the "incident" off Catalina Island is a good excuse for our Government to tone things down in the immediate future in this part of Eastern Europe and Asia. Lest we forget what almost happened 3 years earlier in Ossetia.  Not certain where our military is in the morale department but if the DOS and CIA keep tickling the "funny bone" of the Russian neighborhood I think it's safe to say the stay they may be pondering will be quite different then the ones they have enjoyed in Iraq and Afghanistan over the past 12 years.

Suffice it to say "encirclement" of other superpowers can certainly be a real bitch in the money and personnel department(s)!

I've had a fairly intense interest in the Ukraine ever since the Soviet Union went tits up. While most of my naval service was spent up in the Barents, one of my shore deployments found me on a naval intelligence staff with its eye fixed firmly on the Soviet Black Sea fleet and its home port at Sevestopol.

When Ukraine became an independent republic, it had a fuck-ton of the former Red Army's hardware and a God-awful amount of tactical and strategic nuclear armaments. It had the potential to become the most powerful industrial center in eastern Europe by a large margin (outside of Russia, of course). Of course, we all know how that story ended: the Ukrainian government "repatriated" all of that nuclear hardware, pared down the military and sold off much of its tanks, planes, etc (although much of its small arms inventory ended up on the global black market, as former Red Army generals made for a brisk payday).

As time wore on and Russia became resurgent, Putin began issuing Russian passports to anyone in the eastern Ukraine (and in particular, Crimea) who asked and could establish even the most ephemeral of Russian heritage. The goal, of course, was to establish any pretense whatsoever to justify a casus belli should intervention become necessary to seize the Crimea for Russia...and protect its strategic interest with regards to Sevestopol.

Sevestopol is now what everything that happens from here on out in the Ukraine is all about.

To my way of thinking, the Crimea has historically been a Russian possession. It only ended up as part of the Ukraine because of all the machinations that occurred during the October Revolution. Russia could only have given Crimea to Ukraine with a wink and a nod, knowing that the Soviet government would have the total control over the area anyway. After the Soviet dissolution, Russia was in no position to rectify the situation militarily, especially since the Ukraine was in possession of one of the Red Army's largest military formation and oh, by the way, was also a nuclear power.

Well, they aren't now. And Russia is in a position to rectify the situation in regards to Crimea. Putin will move to occupy the Crimea and probably a good sized portion of eastern Ukraine. Europe will do nothing, because of their anemic military and the salient fact that Russia controls their energy supplies. Bath House will do nothing because...well, do I really have to detail the reasons? We are all familiar with them.

The Ukrainian military will try to resist, most likely. But this isn't 1991, and they will be brushed handily aside. The new Republic of Crimea is a foregone conclusion at this point.

Crimea was always Russian.  I think it was Khrushchev who assigned the region to Ukraine in 1954, but back then this was a purely administrative matter, it was just easier to run things that way i guess.  It certainly did not mean anything within the context of the USSR.

If you look at a map of the old Russian Empire prior to fall of the tsarist regime, you're right - Crimea was a part of Russia proper. After the formation of the Soviet Union, while Crimea was still a part of Russia, it was still handled out of Kiev purely as an adminidtrative matter. Krushchev merely formalized the arraingment as he ascended through the ranks of the Pilotburo. He was Ukrainian, after all, and had quite a large amount of clout to wield. So you are exactly right.

That's the $64 billion (adjusted for inflation) question, isn't it? But here is what I keep thinking about, again drawing from the information I was privy to during my time in DNI:

In 1991, Russia was very much a defeated superpower. Her economy was in shambles. Her military deplorably underfunded, poorly equipped in comparison to NATO. There was a sufficient amount of information to suggest that at least one-third, and likely much more of her silo-based ICBM arsenal was in such a state as to be inoperational (which was neither here nor there, because her Typhoon and Delta-series boomers most likely had perfectly operational ICBM missles, MIRV armed and with global reach).

It was at this time that Russia was reaching out her hand in friendship to the West. And what was the response of George H.W. Bush's administration (and Clinton, and W thereafter)? To push NATO right on up to her borders, thus poking the wounded bear right in the eye. What could have been the beginning of a US-Russia-European hegemony of peaceful coexistence hence thereafter turned into a continuation of the old Cold War rivalry. The results of which you see today. My former colleagues and I could only shake our heads - we had spent most of our adult lives on the front lines of the Cold War, and all our hopes to see it ended were dashed in but two short years after the dissolution of the USSR.

Anyway, where does it go after Russia occupies the Crimea and sets up a puppet "republic?" I rather doubt that Russia stops there. They will move to occupy much of eastern Ukraine, on the pretense of protecting all those people with Russian passports. I could envision them even making a go for Kiev, not to occupy, but to bring the pro-western government to heel. NATO is going to have an interesting choice to make.

Remember that NATO was formed for the sole purpose of containing the USSR (read: Russia) and detering any attempt by that power to march to the Bay of Biscaine. If NATO does not respond forcefully to any attempt to partition Ukraine (or failing that, to march on Kiev), can NATO retain any credibilty as a military organization..or indeed its raison d'ete for existence? Enquiring minds, and all that.

" can NATO retain any credibilty as a military organization..or indeed its raison d'ete for existence?"

NATO  has "Faithful" members like Turkey and Greece. Could you tell us which way they are going to back Nato and the EU, AGAINST Russia??

Greece will do whatever its puppet masters in Brussels tell them to do.

Turkey is a wild card. Their attempts to get into the EU has been fraught with pitfalls from the beginning. I'm not sure that their Islamist PM is all that gung-ho about membership in that clusterfuck anymore. If he is, he'll back whatever the EU does. If not, watch him do the opposite. I'm keeping in mind the Muslim insurgents in Chechnya, and Erdogan's hard-on for their ideology. I think the ongoing Muslim infilitration of Europe (via Europe's easy open borders and immigration policy towrds NEMA) might have some influence on Turkey's thinking, too.

You're not wrong about the Greek people's feeling regarding their current government. The ascendence of parties like Syriza and Golden Dawn tell the tale. But look at it this way: When push comes to shove, will the Greek electorate fall into line...like they did when they elected New Democracy (ostensibly center-right. Que the LOLs at this point) and the Socialists to be their coalition partner, all for the purpose of keeping Greece in the Eurozone (and by extension the EU). I'm quite resigned at this point that the Greek populace has precisely zero fight in them when it comes to confronting Brussels' dictates...but damn, I'd sure love to be wrong about that.

We are about to witness some very significant geo-political shifts, and the weeping crime of it is that all we have available on our side is assholes like the State Department bitch who couldn't keep her ignorant mouth shut on an unsecured line. And who never, ever will be made to pay for her treasonous actions, because she is one of the insiders who think they run the world. Until they don't.

Thanks. And you're welcome. I've been out of the service since 1994, so keep in mind that most of my inside info is dated. Still, so much of what I was privy in the Crimean sphere is still classified to one degree or another. Indeed, everything of an operational nature (especially of my time under the Barents) is a no-no.

One thing is for certain: If NATO has any military card to play, it would be the US that has to do the heavy lifting. The European contingent of NATO is a joke, having been protected by the American military umbrella since the end of the Cold War...western Europe's military power has dwindled to near nothing. Note that NATO could not even dislodge Khaddafi in Libya until America got involved.

Then you'll know exactly what to 1917 , the state of Ukraine , has never existed on the political map of the world. And you will also know that the so-called "Kievan Rus" - is the name of only historical period , but not the name of any state education.

All so-called eastern regions of Ukraine ( including Crimea and the so-called Ukrainian Settlement ) is the old native Russian land.
Where Russia's rulers at different times, allowed to settle and live Ukrainians who fled from the Polish oppression .
I hope you now understand why on this land, are so many Russian people now.
By the way, most people who died of starvation, is Russian people in the south and east of Ukraine. In western Ukraine, the famine was not. But today, this hunger is outraged western Ukraine, which is generally felt no hunger.

The East Ukraine and South sent a real message to Kiev today! They said they will not only not accept any laws coming out of the revolutionary parliament, but the East and South will now be self financing from here on in. Now do you know what that means? The East and South Ukraine pay almost ALL the TAXES that go to the state. Because they have all the industry and productive enterprises. Since they, as of today, will send no tax money to Kiev, that means Kiev is bankrupt as of today. Not only that, but Russia will not send it's bail out billions to Kiev as of today, but instead to Karkov and to Crimea. Thus the East will be flush with money, while all Kiev and the West Ukraine can do is beg the EU and USA for billions. As of this minute, Kiev has no tax base of any consequence.

Think about that. Money talks louder than tanks. Seriously, what is west Ukraine going to do without a tax base. The revolutionaries are going to get a big lesson in capitalism.

The entire industry and all the natural resources are in the south and east of Ukraine , where 60 % of the population - Russian . Western Ukraine - it is empty.

The entire western and central Ukraine - is traditionally subsidized regions .
They have always lived off the south and east of Ukraine.
They did not suffer from hunger. On the Western Ukraine there was no famine. Hunger was there, where live the majority of the Russian people . Because it is an old Russian land, including Crimea. But what do we see today? Western Ukraine squeals and whines the loudest about the famine, which was not there!

Western Ukraine always sucked tityu of Mother Russia. And they always was ready spit to Russia.
Now, let them try to suck the penis of Uncle Sam! LOL

"silvermail" I appreciate your post. It is nice to see people post with fact based information and opinions. Unlike the propaganda and transparently biased posts of so many on this topic in this thread. You are indeed correct in what you say, but this angers the Western Ukrainians who will never admit the facts.

I believe that the East and South of Ukraine has chosen the best policy they could by now witholding all tax revenues from the West and keeping the money in their lands. It is hard to over estimate how important this tax base is, without it, the revolution in Kiev is simply a bunch of bankrupt rabid extremists.

I was thinking that Putin might let the Western Ukarainians become "wards" or "dependents" of the EU ... then cut off all the oil and resources.

Instantly, the EU has a shit-load of useless eaters, whilst Russia gets all the cream.

Ultimately, it is the promise of "something-for-nothing" which attracts these peripheral nations to the EU.

Sounds like a version of Castro's Mariel Boat crises. It's very interesting to watch how this geopolitical chess game plays out and how Putin handles this "defeat" which is a check but not a checkmate. EU and US are only the horses, Zion is the wests king and rider, and Putin's Russia is the easts king. In the meantime China has a similar problem with the west that Russia has. These two power centers have to have their geopolitical alliances broken up by sowing zionist discord thru proxy US/EU.

Whatever happens, more amateur Ukrainian lap dancers are gonna be heading for the UK. So, since this is supposed to be a financial site, buy stocks of G-string manufacturers and washing detergent companies such as Unilever, good for getting those messy stains out of guys' pants...

Borders are just man-made lines on a map. There is nothing holy about them. In the five billion year history of this planet the nation state is a very recent invention. Of course it suits kleptomaniacal asshole politicians well to pretend that there is something sacred about those geographic fictions known as countries. More for them to steal.

F22 - it is easy prey for the Russian missiles - just a target.
Americans love to boast of such a weapon , which is effective only against a weak opponent .
But history repeats itself.
All this already has been in the Vietnam. American automatic rifles and planes were better, only on the words.
In aerial combats in the skies of Vietnam, "obsolete" Russian MIGs , defeated the " newest " Phantoms United States, by a margin of almost two times .
And the " invincible " at the time B52, appeared just a easy target for "obsolete" Russian missiles.
When Russians decided that B52 should not take part in the war , they were shot down 8 pieces B52 in one day.
After this, in the U.S., was the national mourning. And after this incident, the U.S. Army realy stopped using the B52 in the Vietnam.

Oh stop it.

I'm the first person to give Russian weapons systems praise where praise is due, but the F4 Phantom II *dominated* the MiG once they got the bugs worked out and mounted a gun on it.
