Russia To Add "Stealth" Subs To Mediterranean Force

Tyler Durden's picture

Many have been surprised by the lack of public response by Russia to the ongoings in Ukraine. Aside from some comments by Siluanov, the response has been concerning in its absence from the iron fist. However, quietly and with little new coverage, RiaNovosti reports that the combat capability of Russia’s naval task force in the Mediterranean will increase significantly - for the first time in decades - following the first deliveries of Varshavyanka-class submarines (with advanced stealth technology dubbed "black holes in the ocean") to the Black Sea Fleet.

Via RiaNovosti,

Russia formed a permanent naval task force in the Mediterranean last year to defend its interests in the region. The move was widely seen, however, as a response to calls for international intervention in the worsening civil war in Syria, Russia’s longtime ally.

The task force currently consists of 12 warships and auxiliary vessels, including the nuclear-powered missile cruiser Pyotr Veliky and aircraft carrier Admiral Kuznetsov.

According to Chirkov, the Russian warships are taking part in an international operation to remove chemical weapons stockpiles from Syria.

“In general, the tasks assigned to the Mediterranean group are absolutely clear: to thwart any threat to Russia’s borders and security,” the admiral said, adding that it is normal practice for any country to keep naval assets in vital regions around the globe.

Chirkov said that the first Varshavyanka-class diesel-electric submarine, the Novorossiisk, will join the Black Sea Fleet in 2015.

The Defense Ministry has ordered a total of six Varshavyanka-class subs, dubbed “black holes in the ocean” by the US Navy because they are nearly undetectable when submerged.

...

The Varshavyanka-class (Project 636) is an improved version of the Kilo-class submarines and features advanced stealth technology, extended combat range and the ability to strike land, surface and underwater targets.

The submarines are mainly intended for anti-shipping and anti-submarine missions in relatively shallow waters.

...

The Black Sea Fleet has not received new submarines for decades and currently operates only one boat: the Kilo-class Alrosa, which joined the navy in 1990.

And if you have been paying attention, we own the kinetic space doofus.  Those ramjet missles we are testing are kinetic aircraft, pilotless drones.  They are anywhere in five hours.  What do you think is now aboard carrier protection groups?  Laser and kinetic defense.

You guys can keep masterbating in your we will destroy America militarily meme.

The grownups are talking.  Go back to playing with your ninja legos.

Nobody "owns" kinetic space.  A carrier can be taken down with one little tiny missle, that are cheap, numerous and fast.  Carriers are very expensive, and not very replaceable.  Missiles are easily transported covertly, are cheap, and did I mention numerous?

The analogy would be mosquitos with a highly deadly disease, and a very penetrating mouth vs an Elephant.  The elephant loses probabalistically 19/20ths of the time.

Go do a search on Google on the F-35.   There are lods of videos.  Supposedly, there was a simulation over the Taiwan Straits with F-18s, F-35s and maybe a few F-16s.  They were up against Mig 29s and some other variants.

The F-35s were the worst of the bunch. F-18s only did marginally better.   Apparently, this war game scenario was kept secret but a lot of it got back to Australia and possibly Canada.  Watch for F-35 cancellations.

https://www.google.com/#q=war+game+scenario+f-35+taiwan

The creepy and evil NWO Rand Corp. ran the simulations.  One of the quotes was that the F-35 would be clubbed like baby seals.  A total piece of shit jet pushed by corrupt MIC.

The F-35 has been a black hole for the USA defense budgets.   One of the worst disasters in USA military procurement ever.  Right up there with LBJ/Obama's friend AIPAC Lester Crown's General Dynamics F-111.

The piece of shit F-35s software code is still not done after a decade?  They probably have Indian and affirmative action coders - like the people who did the ObamaCare web site.   The Russian missiles probably have top rate Russian coders.

Because conventional submarines like these will be relevant in a full blown conflict of the scale you describe.

That's what Tartus is for, other than parking nuclear s300s within range of Israel without "proliferating" them to Assad. And then there are treaties that prevent closing the Bosporus, not mention the global banking syndicate really doesn't Turkey turning into Greece.

Useless? No.  Very tactically limited and easy to contain especially if Turkey/Greece fully cooperate and engage in coordinated activities?  Yes.  US never really worried about the Soviet naval presence in the Eastern Med.  It was always the units out of Murmansk and Archangel and the units in the Pacific out of Vladivostok that caused them nightmares because the difficulty in containing them.

I kinda see where the Tylers are going with this....if we keep up our spending ratio (6:1) to others for 'defense'....then they are going to try and bankrupt us (like we did the Russians some time back).....no need for open war (not yet at least)...let us build what we can't afford and eventually we won't be able to pay for the soldiers or the operation/upkeep of these behemoths.....

All it would need is say for the Iranian navy to steam up outside New York and shout "Allahu Akbar" a few times...

Say, didn't they transit the Mediterranean just a couple of weeks ago?

If Russia would arrest the Rockefeller family descendants and the Rothschilds, Goldman Sachs and the FED, Jamie Dimon etc. and bring them to trial for crimes against humanity in Russia then I'm all for them and any other nation that does it.

Long live the revolution against financial perverts.

Odd to see how many submarine warfare experts are collected here on ZH.  And significantly more confident about the US Navy's problem free dominance over the Russians than the US Navy is. And not one mention yet of their P3s and P8s.  Which seems odd. Perhaps our resident tacticians would hold them in reserve.  Maybe the Russians will do us the courtesy of leaving their sweet, sweet Backfires back home...

Anyhoo, isn't the more basic question why the US would risk having a decent portion of its Navy sunk or damaged over Ukraine?  What, in the fuck, is with all the warmongering.

a question for all those debating the merrits of russian vs us conventional military power...

does it really matter? in the end will it make any difference who has the best toys?

of course not. it all pales next to each nations nuclear arsenal .

and the simple truth of any conflict between the us and russia is that sooner or later it would go nuclear. and despite what most americans who suck the teet of military superority propaganda may wish to beleive, we can not stop there's any more than they can stop ours.

so lets not worry about who has conventional bragging rights, cause there are no winners in this game.

"From Russia with Gold" http://goldminersreport.com/library/from-russia-with-gold/

Mother Russia is one of the most resource rich countries on the planet, with an enormous endowment of oil, natural gas, diamonds, and of course gold, among many others.

She is the  largest oil producer, with the 7th largest reserves, behind only OPEC member states.  The country is neck in neck with Iran for the largest natural gas reserves and is the world’s largest diamond producer.

Russia has wealth to last 3,000 years http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2204566/Russia-diamonds-Source-S...

Just remember one thing. This fleet is operating in Russian waters. As such it is close to its base and to military materiel, fuel etc. It doesn't have a long supply trail. Any other nation attempting to challenge the Russian navy in this area would be hampered by lack of ports to call at and lack of resupply stations. Only a very hubristic and arrogant nation would even attempt such a foolish move. Do you know any pretentious and prideful country like that?
