Russian Ships Carrying Soldiers Said To Be En Route To Sevastopol

Those tracking the developments in the Ukraine, and specifically the Russian response to this weekend's coup, will be interested to note that according to the Russian flot.com website, the large landing ship Nikolai Filchenkov, previously known for its participation in the Syrian naval arms build up, is expected to arrive in the Crimean port of Sevastopol carrying 200 armed soldiers, sent from the nearby Black Sea town of Temryuk.

From Flot.com

Today at 12:00 from the Russian port of Temryuk should arrive in Sevastopol, the large landing ship "Nikolai Fil'chenkov" with 200 soldiers on board. This was reported today by the chairman of the Ukraine "Freedom" faction Oleg Tyagnibok citing sources in the Crimean.

"I can show you the text message" - said Tyahnibok and read: "Today at 12:00 is expected the arrival from the port of Temryuk in the Russian Federation in the city of Sevastopol large landing ship Nikolai Fil'chenkov from the Black Sea Fleet of the Russian Federation. It will bring about 200 armed soldiers from the 328th Marine battalion, who are based in Temryuk and 10 BTR-80."

He also noted that "on February 22-23, ... IL-76 flights airlifted from Kubinka (Moscow region) to Anapa, personnel from the 45th Airborne Special Forces unit and additional divisions were relocated via four Il-76 flights from Pskov to Anapa. And from Sochi to Anapa were transported six Mi-8 helicopsters"- said Tyahnibok.

This appears to not be an isolated move as the naval build up seems to be escalating. In a concurrent release, Izvestia Kiev reported that out of Kubinka, four ships carrying special forces, are being relocated to Anapa. From there, in four hours, they will depart fo Sevastopol at a speed of 10-15 knots, citing "Izvestia in Ukraine" as a source.  According to the source, the redeployment is "qualitative, not quantitative" and that the Ukraine is following these developments.

It remains to be seen if the Ukraine, or its brand new NATO BFFs, will respond in kind.

One thing as an American. The US corporations who build and sell military equipment to the US taxpayer are having a very good day. The famous Military Industrial Complex is going to profit from this in a major sense. Let' stop pretending, the USA is in the business of war. We don't manufacture for export, or manufacture for the domestic market, we unload container ships from China and Germany. We print money and unload tankers from Saudi Arabia. We have only one real industry and that is war. All else is the service economy, health care, education and government. Subtract those and there is no USA economy, other than the war economy.

Why does poverty soar, wages fall and jobs go to China? While the Fed prints and the USA is at war in 7 nations, soon to be eight.

Agreed.  Which is why I'm confused as to why Sikorsky Aircraft just announced another 600 job cuts in CT.  Wondering if it's just part of the general economic squeeze or what.  Wouldn't surprise me is they slowly exit CT for greener pastures down south.  Oh by the way Governor Malloy, Cabelas in East Hartford would like to thank you for another incredible quarter!  The entire store was mobbed on Saturday and almost everyone had ammo in hand!  Next to your mentor Barry the Bomber, you get second place for gun salesman of the year!

Yes indeed, a new chapter in the long-running story of Ukraine as one of the most corrupt countries on earth.

So how did a thieving dicey oligarch make her way to the head of an insurrection against corruption? Listen to the infamous tape of US State Department spokesperson Victoria Nuland, where she cursed out the European Union for its timidity in stage-managing the opposition leadership: she told the US ambassador that Vitali Klitschko, the champion boxer and head of the UDAR ("Punch") party is too combative to be able to get along with the State Department’s chosen candidate, former Prime Minister and head of the National Bank Arseniy Yatsenyuk – who heads up Tymoshenko’s party, known as "Fatherland."

This stage-managing illustrates the essential principle that must inform our understanding of the Ukrainian events: the role of the United States government in this affair is utterly pernicious. While funding and encouraging the Ukrainian people to rise up against a gang of kleptocrats, Washington plots behind the scenes to install their own favored thieves in power. But that is only the beginning of the Obama administration’s crimes.

The larger game being played here is a geopolitical one, with Ukraine in the role of a pawn. As Reuters reports, Washington has already raised the stakes to the level of a military crisis:

"The United States and European allies warned Russia not to send forces into Ukraine on Sunday as rival neighbors east and west of the former Soviet republic said a power vacuum in Kiev must not let the country break apart….

God, I have always wanted to drive one of those things! In the late 90's when I was in Russia, I got to drive a 6 wheel drive former Red Army Truck. That thing was unreal, it could drive through anything, and I mean anything.

I suspect that Putin's strategy here is to make a few discreet moves to protect Russia's existing assets in the region while waiting for the new Ukranian regime to destroy itself, as it has already done once before.  What more can you expect from a government made up of a professional boxer, a hair stylist and a bunch of nazi simpathyzers.    P.S.:  Why hasn't Obama fired Nuland for stupidity?

RMolineaux, I think you are right. Putin needs to give the revolution in Ukraine enough rope to hang itself, and note, it already has started. The revolutionary right wing is vowed to fight on. Kiev is a shambles, no real government, and the infighting is breaking out.

No, Putin will only react if Kiev tries to assert control in Crimea or East and South Ukraine. But only after locals resist the radical rights advance.

After reading Paul Craig Roberts piece, I am trying to figure out how the western pro-nationalist or as some say far right (nazi) group is going to react.  PCR said they are a pretty big group with guns.   They hate the Russians but they also supposedly hate the EU.  The question is who do they hate more?

Are the Christians in Western Ukraine also Orthodox lik ethe Russians?  Maybe they will realize that the EU/USA/IMF gang are the same people who were behind the USSR.  The enemy of my enemy is my friend.

Don't worry about the ships carrying soldiers, instead worry about the ships that are unmanned and don't carry soldiers.  They tend to go places that ships carrying soldiers don't.

Remember, it only took 300 Spartans to stop the entire Persian army... This group will likely occupy an oil/gas asset in the Crimea. They are there to shoot - so that no rag-tag force takes over that asset. If they get attacked, they will be able to call for help and it will be considered an attack on Russia.

I am amazed at the idiots on thie board that can't see what is going on here.  Why can't you put it withe the big picture?  The Ukranians vote not long ago to stay out of the EU.  The EU and US send thugs and henchmen in to start riots and complain to the world how bad the people of Ukrain have it.  They run this "viral" video of some hot eastern European chick crying out for help and support.  Got eveyone stirred up against Russian the "evil empire".  Of course they do this as Putin and Russia are trying to put their best foot forward at the Olympics.

The bankers want the Ukrain.  It is an agricultural powerhouse of the region.  People need to wake up.  The EU and the US are the bad guys.  I am for Russia if for no other reason than a balance of power.  Some of you need to do some homework.  Working for the EU isn't all its cracked up to be.

Can you really say that giving up your national sovereignty and working for German bankers is any better than working for Putin?  I'll take the Russian side.  At least they let me have my own government as long as I send them some wheat.

It's like the gov analyst I heard on the David Webb show talking about "Chinese agression".  He mention a border skirmish with the Russians, Korea, and some other nothing incident.  Then he went all the way back to 1600 b.c. to talk about some "Dynasty".  Can you believe it, 1600 b.c.?!  To prove a point on Chinese agression?  Really?  The Chinese haven't been agressive in the last 100 years.  Never realy aggressive outside their borders in the last 1,000 years.  Hell, even the Kubli Kahn wasn't a China-man.  WE are the agressors.  The US.  We have been in more wars and international incidents in the last 60 years than China has in the last 1,000.  Yet they are the agressors and we are the peace keepers.  What bulllshit!

Wake up people!  It is not that hard to see what is happening and who is lying.

Russia is getting ready to send in troops because no major power would not be prepared when facing such an unstable situation in a major neighbor and when said neighobr hosts a significant military installation. Should Ukraine end up in the soup then you can bet your ass Russia is gonna send troops into the country. What we would we do if it happened in Canada? Of course, even if Russian troops only enter Ukraine due to the country descending into a full-on civil war that will still lead to empty condemnation from the great sanctified West who will admit to no fault in creating such a situation.

Last report I heard was that Yaunkoyvitch as hiding in that area after being blocked by his previous border guards from flying out of the Ukraine to Russia.  Russia' new warship could be partly a taxi service to their former ally now deposed despot Yaunkovitch.  The way things are going Yaunkovitch could be a lingering liability to Putin if left in the Ukraine making Putin and Russia look weak.  The people I know in the Ukraine are sure that Russia has not given up and new problems are ahead.
