Take an exchange named for "Magic: The Gathering", add some "currency" which in its most tangible form is an electron fluctuating between 0 and 1, and you get this...

You've done more to drive people away from BitCoin than all the other posters here combined.

People who are curious about BitCoin look at your behavior, your immaturity and your passive agressive snarkiness and conclude that BitCoin is a churlish fad that will never become practical.

If you would grow up, conduct yourself like a man, and state an honest, objective case for BitCoin you'd have a lot more people interested in it.

We all thank you, fonestar, for demonstrating to all of us here just how lacking in intellect and ethics the garden variety bitcoin cultist troll tends to be. Your arguments in support of your beloved bitcoin are so twisted, illogical, and removed from reality that they have exactly the opposite effect you intend. Not only that, your dementia provides a much needed, kind of therapeutic, comic relief to ZH readers. It's a win-win for those of us that have avoided falling down that rabbit hole you are so very lost in.

You are delusional. Many ZH'ers have scoffed at bitcoin because it is idiocy at it's finest. When the SHTF what will you do with your intangible internet based digital crap then? If unsure, just look at the photo of the 2 pathetic geeks with this article. They are so very stupid that they think that sitting there with their signs accomplishes something other than displaying their stupidity to the world. It's absolutely hysterical!!

First scenario:  Dollar doesn't collapse.  Bitcoin tries to compete with the dollar and gets crushed.

Second scenario:  Dollar callapses.  Nobody gives a shit about internet coins.

Your "SHTF" scenarios are a joke, which might be funny if it weren't for the fact they were coming from grown adults.  If things got that bad, my guess is the posters here would be the first ones to go.

You could also explore other types of cold storage.

It happens to crypto exchanges all the time. Several more have failed very recently. You can read every day about crypto owners getting scammed by exchanges.

The difference here is that Mt.Gox is big enough to make the mainstream news.

This is just the kind of news that opens the door for do gooder elected fucktards to legislate ownership of crypto currency out of existence. I don't have a dog in this fight but I must admit that anything that fucks with their little human farm is fine by me. But then I have to ask why they have not intervened yet if it is such a threat?  Which makes me wonder who is the main driver if they are letting it float? to what ends? If it is such a threat to their collection racket they would have been all over this lke white on rice, so fuck it, I'm tired of thnking about it.

That "flaw" has not been fixed in the bitcoin protocol. It's still there, it's well documented and almost everyone could abuse it. Bitcoin would be dead within minutes.

But the truth is, an attack possibility, which can be exploited only via social engeneering, known for years and even well documented on a website owned by Karpeles, was used as an excuse for losing 750k coins over many years without noticing? Come on, this fish stinks from its head.

A lot of people don't understand the main pillar of freedom; responsibility.

If you want freedom with your money, you need be responsible for it. If you have gold bullion and store it in the front seat of an unlocked car and it gets stolen does that mean something is wrong with gold?

What happened with Mt.Gox is exactly what happens in a free market. You had a lot of people who did not do their due diligence and gave an entity their money that they shouldn't have. You should never store your bitcoin on ANY exchange. You buy it and put it into cold storage. In a free market the bad apples get pushed away...Mt. Gox is a bad apple and they are gone. A BETTER system will replace Mt. Gox and in fact there are companies like Second Market who are coming out with a US based exchange shortly.

If people want FREEDOM with their money they need to accept RESPONSIBILITY for their money and actions.

So for all the bitcoin bashing liberty loving posters on ZH...you can go fuck yourself. No one in this market got a tax payer funded bailout and as a result a more robust ecosystem will move forward. The rot has been swept away just like it should have been.

Thanks for the great comment.

Everything you said applies not just to money, but various aspects of life in general. The issue today is no one accepts responsibility for their actions and poor decisions, and even worse expects others to make up for any preceived differences from what they have to what they think they deserve. From what I've read America used to have an attitude of pulling oneself up through hard work and determination, but sadly I see little of that in my generation.

"Capitalism without bankruptcy is like Christianity without hell".

Bad analogy. Bankruptcy is foregiveness. Economic systems WITHOUT bankruptcy are like hell. Debtor prisons are the alternative to bankruptcy.

Still, your main point about responsibility is valid. Deposit insurance and bailouts are moral hazards that lead to bank failures. (Bank owners are not lending their own money, and depositors do not subject banks to sufficient scrutiny).

I don't think you will like the feeling of willing to die for a 4 GB flash drive with the possibility of a whole bunch of 000000000000's.

What government has a kill switch on the entire global internet?

The US is pretty close. They have control over the root DNS servers, so they could shut down name resolution. It also seems likely to me that those NSA "taps" aren't one-way and likely have remote management capability, meaning they could at a minimum fracture the internet into dozens of regional subnets with a few commands.

Bitcoin P2P network uses IP addresses. Go ahead and take away all the DNS servers. The decentralized Bitcoin computer will keep on processing uninterupted on top of a network designed to withstand a nuclear winter.

Yeah, that will work past DNS, but it won't work if anyone pops the higher-level BGP routers off.

There are plenty of instances where that's happened as well, and you end up with a very broken internet. Kill the DNS and 99% of the people won't be able to get anything to work, and the 1% will get taken out with the router blocks.

Perfect example would be ZH. Many of us here keep the ZH IP address around in case there is a DNS-level attack  (last time I checked it didn't work due to an IP to hostname redirect on the ZH side, though that can be fixed with a hosts file entry). The approach would be useless if the BGP routers were taken out on the US or Swiss side.

The internet as it exists today is nothing like the IP packet goes anywhere it wants, damage resistant network it started as. If it were Netflix wouldn't have needed to dump cash on broadband ISPs to keep them from fucking with their packets.

There is really only 1 government. You should know what happens when countries think they are independent of the system. When the men behind curtains say turn it off, its going to be lights out online. These fucks will do anything to keep their scams going at all costs. Do not underestimate the enemy. Bitcoin is sticking around because it is no threat. it will never be allowed to be a currency unless the central banks of the world are behind bitcoin.

What bollocks. The guy on the right was on the news crying because he had 211 bitcoins.

'They were worth $211,000 and they've all gone'

He looks geeky enough to have got them for cents on the dollar.

So how much is he actually down? Probably answer fuck all.

Good logic except that argument was used at 1900 and 49 bucks. As your heads were rolled down the stairs to 1180 and 18 bucks - you disappeared. Only to return here at the perceived bottom to maximize the next pump phase.

hopefully you're right this time..

The big question is

Will you have the balls or the forsight to sell at the next event horizon...

I doubt it.

Kirk's indignant blog-du-jour: I continue to be amazed at how well hypocrisy thrives not just in the fiat economy, but on a libertarian website like ZH also.  Specifically...

1. Mt. Gox is just an Unregulated Free-Market exchange.  In this case, it happens to be (have been?) one of several exchanges for a decentralized, free-market virtual asset named Bitcoin.

2. For all the sheep-like bleating, bitching, complaining, moaning and whining about how fucking Regulated, Centralized, Manipulated the large markets are, you'd fuckin' think that these libertarians/Libertarians would simply acknowledge that "this is what happens in a libertarian economy -- where it takes some time for the Market to ID and cleanse incompetent and/or crooked players".  But, hell no!

3. It turns out that there are tons of phonies, fair-weather, pseudo-libertarian assholes out there -- who just LOVE to fucking pile on anything that makes their otherwise shitty and useless lives less so.

4. Having said this, there are no doubt a bunch of Gov.Trolls here, posing as being "anti-bitcoin" for all sorts of bullshit reasons -- just so they blend in with the Mountain.Trolls.

May the REAL libertarians please stand up and be counted.  -Kirk out.
