Take an exchange named for "Magic: The Gathering", add some "currency" which in its most tangible form is an electron fluctuating between 0 and 1, and you get this...

"Real Libertarians" don't necessarily jump on the first bullshit bandwagon that comes along just because it claims to be "anti-central bank".  A crap solution that touts free market status is still a crap solution.  Bitcoin is utter garbage slathered in the cosmetics of liberty - a distraction away from real tangible solutions like physical gold and silver.  Mt. Gox was THE LARGEST bitcoin exchange and it has now dissappeared, which proves beyond a doubt that bitcoin is not immune to ponzi schemes often equated to paper currencies.  Bitcoiners cry "conspiracy" whenever someone presents rational criticisms of their movement because they are so desperate to be the knights in shining armor, saving the world with the power of their hard drives.  Too bad the real world is pissing on their parade, but that's how it goes.  Anyone who thinks bitcoin is going to stop the central banking cabal is truly deluded.  Want to make a real difference?  Try getting off your asses, away from your computers, and build self sustaining trade in your local community.  Learn how to produce needed goods.  Learn how to defend yourselves, instead of living your whole lives as 96 pound geek weaklings like the guys in the photo.  Fuck bitcoin.  It's a waste of time, energy, and naive optimism...

this Crypto money fiasco brings to mind the anarcho capitalist mantra that is prevalent here amongst some in ZH.

State regulation can be Putinistan, no doubt about that, or a softer version like France :  not knowing Colbertism from Mussolinian crony capitalism, all the while pretending its free market balance.

But this anarcho capitalism thingie that Reaganomics spawned today is just Mafia or neo-feudal ideology, hidden under the false nose of libertarian "useful idiots". Madoff, JAmie Dimon and MT Gox...all work to the same simple ponzi rule where the only rule is nobody is ACCOUNTAblE, so no moral hazard! And the state pays for the broken china after the rampage.

There has to be balance between state and private enterprise in a state of law that is effective.

Thats History's lesson and Enlightenment's legacy.

We've got the worst of both worlds today and thats the saddest part of NWO-Reaganomics age.

The US had it all in 1990 when the Berlin wall fell and there were no ideological rivals.

And they blew it by becoming the mirror reflection of that absurd enemy called USSR, all out of Hubris.

Wow, human nature...when you rape the Trojans you end up in hell.

Exchanges are "supposed" to be fully allocated and immune to bankruptcy. Every seller deposits actual BTC at the exchange and every buyer deposits actual Fiat currency.  The exchanges charge a fee on each trade, usually 0.5% or less.  This Gox fiasco should force the other exchanges into becoming more transparent.

Depends: many people invested in mining equipment: either parts that they fashioned into miners or miners they purchased from places like Butterfly Labs. Also, if they were mining they sucked a huge amount of electricity out to do it. $$$

Irony: Mt. Gox was a big player in the libertarian digital currency that was to provide refuge from the destructive elements of fiat currency--and here clients were shut out early due to Gox's fear of a bank run, then came collapse with investors left holding the bag. Sound familiar?

But seriously: what we have here is creative destruction. Not an owner of Bitcoin, I prefer silver, but consider: Gox was always incompetent: they needed to fail. Time to prune the deadwood. Every innovative product or platform always has failures, often spectacular ones. There are solid players out there like Coinbase. Gox is not equal to Bitcoin. And Litecoin was created to fix a number of flaws in Bitcoin.

Any players in Bitcoin or other alt currencies are better off cashing out soon and regularly and investing the earnings in hard assets.

A positive: no one will ask for or receive a taxpayer-funded govt bailout.

Litecoin does not fix "flaws" in Bitcoin. It just replaces the hash function from sha2 to scrypt. The rest of the protocol is the same.

no, like all digi-exchanges it was a honeypot. You couldn't use the same dollars or work-hours to buy gold, silver, food or safe/secure property when loading up on digital nothings & then it was vanished, as intended. This was the only plan ever.
