This Man's $600,000 Facebook Disaster Is A Warning For All Small Businesses

Tyler Durden's picture

Submitted by Mike Krieger of Liberty Blitzkrieg blog,

It continues to amaze me how people are completely ignoring what appears to be an incredible amount of shadiness inherent in Facebook’s business model. Whether or not this is intentional click fraud, it is clear that advertisers are not getting what they think they are getting. They won’t be fooled forever, and once they wake up to the money being wasted on fake “likes” and “clicks,” I’m curious to see what happens to their revenue.

The following article from SF Gate is a perfect followup to my post from a couple weeks ago: How Much of Facebook’s Ad Revenue is From Click Fraud?

Perhaps the most shocking passage from the entire article is the following:

Naturally, Brar began disputing his bill with Facebook. He wanted his clicks audited by a third party, to see how many were genuine. Then he discovered that Facebook’s terms of service forbid third-party verification of its clicks. That’s something all advertisers should be aware of before they spend a penny on Facebook.

Facebook is different from the rest of the online ad industry, which follows a standard of allowing click audits by third parties like the IAB, the Media Ratings Council or Ernst & Young.

Um, ok then…

Now more from the SF Gate:

Raaj Kapur Brar runs a small but successful empire of online fashion magazines from his base just outside Toronto. Some of his titles are huge online brands, such as Fashion & Style Magazine, which has 1.6 million Facebook fans.

That’s more fans than Elle magazine has.

Recently, however, Brar has fallen out of love with Facebook. He discovered  that his Facebook fanbase was becoming polluted with thousands of fake likes from bogus accounts. He can no longer tell the difference between his real fans and the fake ones. Many appear fake because the users have so few friends, are based in developing countries, or have generic profile pictures.

At one point, he had a budget of more than $600,000 for Facebook ad campaigns, he tells us. Now he believes those ads were a waste of time.

Facebook declined multiple requests for comment on this story.

Brar’s take is a cautionary one because Facebook has 25 million small businesses using its platform for one marketing purpose or another. Many of them are not sophisticated advertisers — they are simply plugging a credit card number into the system and hoping for the best. This is what can happen if you don’t pay careful attention to contract language, or the live, real-time results your campaigns on Facebook are having.

Here’s how Brar believes it went down: He became interested in advertising on Facebook in 2012, and he took it seriously. He went to Facebook’s local Toronto office where he was trained to use the advertising interface. They set up the campaign, and ran a small “beta” test. Then, in late October Brar pulled the trigger on a massive push through Facebook’s Ads Manager. He used Bitly and Google Analytics to measure the number of clicks his campaign was generating.

The results were disastrous, Brar says.

Facebook’s analytics said the campaign sent him five times the number of clicks he was seeing arrive on his sites, which Brar was monitoring with Bitly, Google Analytics, and his own web site’s WordPress dashboard. There was a reasonable discrepancy between the Bitly and Google numbers, Brar says, but not the five-fold margin between Google’s and Facebook’s click counts.

At one point, data from Facebook indicated his ads had delivered 606,000 clicks, but the site itself registered only 160,000 incoming clicks from Facebook, according to data supplied by Brar. (160,000 clicks is a not insignificant return. After all, these are not clicks on a mere Facebook page, these are users who clicked through to an off-Facebook site.)

“I don’t know what to say, right? This is a huge loss. This ran for four days, then we just stopped the campaign,” Brar says.

Then, things got worse. Even though Fetopolis wasn’t advertising, the likes and new followers kept on piling up. Normally, an advertiser would be pleased at such a result, but every time Brar checked a sample of the new fans he found people with dubious names; a picture of a flower as a profile shot; and fewer than 10 friends — classic signs of a fake profile.

Naturally, Brar began disputing his bill with Facebook. He wanted his clicks audited by a third party, to see how many were genuine. Then he discovered that Facebook’s terms of service forbid third-party verification of its clicks. That’s something all advertisers should be aware of before they spend a penny on Facebook: Facebook has operated this way for a long time, and has a page for advertisers explaining in more depth why third-party click reporting may not match Facebook’s click counts. Essentially, Facebook suggests, if clicks are not measured in exactly the same way over the same time intervals then there will always be discrepancies.

Facebook is different from the rest of the online ad industry, which follows a standard of allowing click audits by third parties like the IAB, the Media Ratings Council or Ernst & Young.

This will all be exposed by the market sooner or later. I’m just shocked it is taking so long for people to put two and two together.

Yup, good article.

One thing I noticed is how agressive Zuckerberg & FB has become in backfilling their decline curve of users. All quant evidence suggests that interest & revenue generation on the main webpage is declining, yet costs are increasing. To offset that decline he is getting ever more agressive in bootstrapping the valuations via stock purchases.

Smells ALOT LIKE TYCO / WORLDCOM. All the way down to the sweating, stammering CEO who stalls on the due diligence softball questions while liquidating his fortune into cash as fast as SEC rules allow him to do it.

Just saying. Or this could be a psyops post. Or not. #mindfuck.

Yeah the FB article was nice but I was more interested in "Sierra couple's $10 mil find" on the front page of SFGate's site. The couple dug up $10 mml in gold coins that date as far back as 1847. Now that's interesting!

Great article. Hilarious how the coins are described as "perfectly preserved".

I wonder what "preservative" they used to protect the gold coins from corrosion. Must have been some potent and long-lasting stuff. I'd like to buy some of what those old timers used to preserve their gold.  /s

I have noticed the exact same thing.  I have a car audio store website, and when we started paying for a few adds, our "Likes" went through the roof.  We had about 2000 organic "Likes", and it went to 6000 in no time.  I thought...wow...that is great. I tracked it via google analytics also and something is really wrong.  If I don't pay a fee, I can see that my organic original "Likes" around 2000 will match up....but then if I pay a fee (Around $100), the reach from Facebooks data is over 30,000 to 60,000 and google analytics only shows the original organic 2000 coming to my site...Something is so wrong with this...I will not spend another cent with Facefuck.

What are you complaining about? For the low price of $100 your "likes" tripled. Is that less than what they promised? Please share if your revenue has increased at all or if you're simply $100 in the hole and 4000 "friends" richer?

Revenue did NOT increase beyond our 2000 organic likes.  It was exactly the same.  I throw $100 at it at a time...and I get the same results if I spend ZERO...or Spend the $100 for the little campaign.  When I spend the $100, I get astronomical numbers reported from facebook...but nothing from anywhere else...numbers like 38,000 have seen your post and you got 336 additional likes.....It is 100% Bullshit.

the philosophy of situational ethics laid out in the talmud has pretty much infected every culture at this point.  A strange situation to have a basic commandment, thou shall not lie, but than have untold number of pages written by supposedly great scholars instructing how lying and cheating is ok, depending on the context.

hey kito...u should know that these non-jews learnt all these bad habits from them. All humans are inherently greedy. that is the weakness instilled in most humans and the jews know that so they exploit it. Not all jews are bad and want to partake in it but a majority do...while jews themselves know that they cannot do it on their own, so they require the employment of those non-jews who have seen the greed. but the root of all evil starts somewhere.

I am surprise u of all people dont see this as you dont seem like one of the ones who partake in these deeds.

Do you go to a synagogue every week? What do u guys talk about there? football and nascar?

DS, you say a majority. there are 13 million jews. how can you say that the majority of them partake in nefarious schemes to swindle the world? is this something thats taught in hebrew school? i attended hebrew school and not once did i hear of this. is it done in synagogues? i dont go so i couldnt say for sure --im not religious, as is the trend in american jews

http://religion.blogs.cnn.com/2013/10/01/study-american-jews-losing-thei...

i know many many jews DS. i live in the tri state area. its utterly absurd ---no offense :)--- to state that a majority of them are up to no good. i know jews from all walks of life. the vast majority are cogs in the machine like the rest of the sheeple.

Divided States of America's picture

kito, what I mean by majority...i mean a much higher percentage than other races. Like I said, I knew a few good jews who befriended me and not the other way around. Just good people that would help me in my time of need I am sure...but dude, you are a jew, so of course other jews are good to you also. I only know a handful of good jews and i have met probably thousands of them, grant it most are working in the filthy financial/investment industry so that may not be fair as the sample size is all greedy bastards.

I used to go to a school with a predominant jewish representation. I was good at basketball but the HS coach was jewish and he never picked me on the HS team. He just stacked it with jewish students...and we went 0-16 for two fuckin seasons and 1-15 in another. I could have made a difference, but he didnt care, he had other agendas. honestly I didnt think too much about this back then.

I woke up when I worked in NYC. Man, it really opened my eyes. The majority there were up to no good.

This is when I started to become more aware of whats going on.

My wife is partially addicted to FB.  Although the luster is wearing off (thank god).  What I will tell you is that FB is a Jonses fest.  It winds up a horribly negative thing.  All I hear about when she is on there is how everyone elses life is perfect and ours isn't.  What a disaster.  It truly ropes the sheep in (yes, my wife is full fledged, indoctrinated sheeple) and warps thier perspective.

Think of violent crime and innocent people being gunned down for $33 in the till and a pack of smokes. Most would see a black man because that is often the case.

Think of a teenager methodically shooting up his high school. Most would think of a white kid because that is often the case.

Think of people utilizing banks and government to loot everyone around them while enslaving them. Most would see a Jew because that is often the case.

Of course the answer is not the elimination of the Jews, but the taking away of their instruments of theft and destruction: big government and fraudulent-reserve banking.

even beyond that, there is no signle Jewish ethnic group.  its a created and crafted myth, though I would bet that the vast majority of people who identify as members of the group have no clue.  for the whole story, see Gilad Atzmon's book, "the Wandering Who":

Re:  If anyone believes that FaceBook popularity is A: real and B: important

Know any normal people (the pathological doomers don't count, NORMAL people) that don't have a facebook account?

Facebook is popular.   When it's stock crashes because they run out of suckers to pay them click money it will still be popular.   It will be popular because people need it for two things:   1)  to find other people to have sex with   2) to show off their bling to other people.

When people stop needing it for 1 & 2 then that means something ELSE will be being used for number 1 & 2.

What else matters beside number 1 & 2?

I don't know any normal people who have facebook accounts. The few that I do know have vanity problems. As you state, they are a) so vain they need to show off their 'bling', or 2) so ugly or obnoxious they can only find sex by hiding behind an online profile.

Facebook isn't popular with anyone older than 30, or anyone with half a brain. More than 80% of the ID's are fake or one time users who looked, saw it was retarded, or were smart enough to realize their lives should not be paraded in front of the world.

Face Book is a classic Ponzi. That is how it will be remembered.

Last year we were told Instagram was the new secret sauce.

Suddenly that has changed and now it is free text messaging. Free text messaging of all fucking things. Let me say it again, FREE TEXT MESSAGING!

Has something revolutionary happened to text messaging that I am not aware of? Oh my, attaching photos. Didn't that happen years ago?

Meanwhile no one bothers to check and see how the original secret sauce, the Face Book desktop, did in terms of real revenue numbers.

Its a fucking Ponzi and so is all of the other shit that they are wheeling out to the crowd.

If clicks don't translate into increased sales, they are not clicks; they're clacks. No different than a magazine sending a bunch of inquiry cards which never produce a sale; but man, they can generate the "inquiries". Same old racket it's always been.

I haven't seen a card deck like that in ten years, but twenty years ago (tempus fugit!) I used to use them, and they worked for me.  Generated a couple of percent inquiry, that turned into a couple of percent sales.  At 100,000 cards per deck you could do the math and figure what it was worth.

All "Clicks" and "Likes" are confirmed by the CIA, NSA and Mossad.

My informed, but unsubstantiated opinion: Google and Facebook are DC US intelligence community funding/theft ops. They use their connections in the propaganda media to hype these entities, "sell" them to the public, then push the stocks up into the stratosphere. The funds from selling shares are then funneled into the pockets and ops of the connected. And of course there is the added bonus of the public creating dossiers on themselves with said intelligence agencies.

Don't cross out the roles of Afghan poppies for their black-ops funding!!!

Ever since 'Murica drove away the Taleban, amazingly the drugs that are flowing out of Afghan are ever increasing ... and the current idea is they'll leave at least 3000 men to safeguard the poppy fields from Taleban and other extremists after the pull-out. This will guarantee the worldwide supply of Afghan-sourced drugs remain unabated!

I can't verify this story completely, but I can verify that the traffic generated from facebook is absolute garbage and has the lowest of coversion rate (to sales) of any advertising system I used before I sold my business last year.  If I used google adwords, my coversion rate was about 3-4%.  Facebook .3 - .7%.  It was absoutely aweful.  BTW, organic traffic from my top keywords converted at over 10%, so adwords wasn't exactly great either.

Depends on who the advertiser is. If it's a large business that recieves a considerable amount of search interest then they will be paying per impression (the number of times their ad is seen) not per click. Per impression rates are different and mean that you can click on the ad a million times and it will not cost them any extra than if you didn't click on it at all. So in those cases you're just being a fool for thinking that it's costing them.

However, smaller operations will use the cost per click payment option. These people will typically be small sole traders trying to scrape by and make a break in life. Therefore, when you click on these people's ads for the sole reason of costing them money you are just being a dickhead.

In either scenario your behaviour is childish at best.
