Obama Asks Court To Make NSA Database Even Bigger

In the most glaring example of how farcical idiocy has become the new normal, we will remind readers (especially those who do not follow us on twitter), of the following blurb from last night:

Sure enough, this attempt at comedy has just failed once more, as less than 24 hours later, it describes an increasingly surreal reality. Just out from the WSJ:
The Obama administration has asked a special court for approval to hold onto National Security Agency phone records for a longer period–an unintended consequence of lawsuits seeking to stop the phone-surveillance program.
The Wall Street Journal reported last week that the Justice Department was considering such a move, which would end up expanding the controversial phone records database by not deleting older call records.
Under the current system, the database is purged of phone records more than five years old. The Justice Department, in a filing made public Wednesday, said it needs to hold onto the older records as evidence in lawsuits brought by the American Civil Liberties Union, Electronic Frontier Foundation, and others.
Under the proposal made to the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court, the older data would continue to be held, but NSA analysts would not be allowed to search it.
The gruesome irony of course is that after his so heartfelt, if completely scripted and rehearsed, appearance before the US public one month ago, when Obama promised he would do everything in his power to reform the NSA, including the ending of the Section 215 metadata collection, and the retenion of bulk phone records, the president certainly kept his promise. Just not quite in the way that everyone had assumed.

The comparisons are usually shallow, and similar can generally be made between any two unpopular leaders. I haven't read the book you linked to, but it sounds a tad conspiratorial. Not that I'm necessarily opposed to such things, it just looks a bit fringe. Look, I know hitler was a demagogic figured head, and monied interests were pulling his strings. However, I've never read anything that claimed it the financial sector behind all of it. And even if they did play a part, I have a hard time believing it's comparable to what is occuring today.

Of course I don't have a concrete answer as to who the ruling class is; every class is in a state of flux to some degree, and they don't want to be known. But if I had to predict, I would say it is some cross-section of the economic, military, and intelligence elite. Given recent revelations regarding the capabilities of the NSA, I'd also predict that power is shifting toward the intelligence agencies. After all, they have access to virtuall ally electronic communication. Imagine what that grants them--the control they could wield over our political, economic, and other leaders. If they don't already constitute a shadow government, I'd expect them to soon. I hope I'm wrong.

The comparison isn't a good one, obviously. Obama is much slicker, less obviously racist in rehtoric or actions (though he shows little concern for the lives of foreigners), not the wild demagogue that Hitler was. But these are different times. And he is using miliatry hegemony to bomb and spy on whomever he considers an enemy without due process and dollar hegemony to reward his corporate/financial friends, damn the consequences. While he may not have the blood directly on his hands that Hitler had, the scale and impact of perpetuating and growing the crimes of the anglo-saxon empire may be more damaging when the bodies are finally counted.

Romance novel writing would be a good one.
During Depression 1.0, the ladies still wanted and bought lipstick and hair rollers etc. with their pin money.
That's why it's good idea to buy bobby pins, hair rollers and things in that vain to put back as barter items.

My all time favorite " prepper" book is The Modern Survival Manual Surviving the Economic Collapse by Ferfal Aguirre. Profiles what he went through in Argentina when it all went down. Absolutely excellent pragmatic info. I have based my future on what he experienced and my view I'd be safe in the country was dead wrong. Without a cohesive fighting group or police protection country dwellers are picked off quickly. He covers it all. Crime, kidnapping, scams, shortages. Infrastructure problems, medical, how to defend yourself and family, how to survive riots, what to stock up. I highly recommend it. Finding alternative income is a big one. I guess Ill put a potential hatch mark by romance novel writer. Chances are microbiology will be quite worthless if we truly go down in a big way.

Agreed, I was desperate to find answers after turning off MSM. My search had been futile until a chance link off of drudge. Most won't get it or have the patience to learn. A few may find awakening. This is a wonderful opportunity and I say welcome to all who wish to walk down a interesting path.

I can't remember how I found ZH, maybe through Alt-Mkt. But I can remember staying up half the night reading post after post and thinking to myself that I had finally found a place with some kindred souls willing to say what I was feeling inside.
I am a bit disturbed by the constant dirge of trolls who dilute the incredible ideas that get put forth. I used to really get up in their stuff, but have grown weary trying to bash their pea brains.
If Drudge is responsible for pointing a bunch of people to ZH and a few more become attuned to what is really going on, then so be it.
