Russia Responds To US Warning: Expands Military Presence Globally

Tyler Durden's picture

Shortly after the US warned Russia over its "provocative actions" with regard Ukraine...

  • *KERRY: RUSSIA MILITARY MOVE ON UKRAINE WOULD BE GRAVE MISTAKE

RiaNovosti reports defense minister Sergei Shoigu saying Russia plans "to expand permanent military presence outside its borders by placing military bases in a number of foreign countries," including Vietnam, Cuba, Venezuela, Nicaragua, the Seychelles, and Singapore. "The talks are under way, and we are close to signing the relevant documents," Shoigu told reporters in Moscow.

Via RiaNovosti,

Russia is planning to expand its permanent military presence outside its borders by placing military bases in a number of foreign countries, Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said Wednesday.

Shoigu said the list includes Vietnam, Cuba, Venezuela, Nicaragua, the Seychelles, Singapore and several other countries.

The talks are under way, and we are close to signing the relevant documents,” Shoigu told reporters in Moscow.

The minister added that the negotiations cover not only military bases but also visits to ports in such countries on favorable conditions as well as the opening of refueling sites for Russian strategic bombers on patrol.

Moscow currently has only one naval base outside the former Soviet Union – in Tartus, Syria, but the fate of this naval facility is uncertain because of the ongoing civil war in that country.

Post-Soviet Russia closed a large naval base in Vietnam and a radar base in Cuba in 2002 due to financial constraints.

However, Russia has started reviving its navy and strategic aviation since mid-2000s, seeing them as a tool to project the Russian image abroad and to protect its national interests around the globe.

Now, Moscow needs to place such military assets in strategically important regions of the world to make them work effectively toward the goal of expanding Russia’s global influence.

A key country will be Egypt. After the president-to-be And head of the egyptian army visited Russia and seems to be moving from being an ally of the US to an ally of Russia.

This chess board is getting very interesting. If China joins the Russians as well, you could kiss the US dominance goodbye. The Ukraine might be the trigger of WWIII

I wonder if one day the Chinese will turn the table on the Russians... ten times the population and low on resources can be a good excuse as any other.

That day will come later. May not come at all-at least not for 50  or a hundred years. The world will probably blow itself up well before that in a nuclear war, or massive readitaion from Fukishima type meltdowns. A solar EMP flareup could knock out  a hundred nulear power plants which do not have sufficient backup energy systems to withstand a power grid failure of over 90 days. yes we're fucked  -I'm 54. Probably in my lifetime.

Don't worry, why conquer Siberia as China when the Chinks can just give some Russian guy a handful of paper money in return for real goods like wood and oil?

Vlad is full of turd, very similar to Obama.  Again it has to reiterated that Russia is been laughed at by the Ukrainians, APCs and 200 men lol.  Also, for the apologists, Ukraine is the food basket of Russia.   A full blown Russian invasion will send food (wheat) prices to the moon.

The only threat to Ukraine are operations from Russia to disrupt the country's political problems, as they struggle to stabilize government.

Yes it is, providing over 20% to Russia, the rest divided up between the other European countries.  Now, check the grain futures and chart them against Ukraine's various market plays (geopolitical, trade etc), see the trend?  Good.    Use your brain, do your research.  Ok?

Thanks

Chump..?   Your research is little correct.

Whether Russia wants food from Ukraine is more important to Ukraine than to Russia.

Russia will not allow anyway if Monsanto gets in there and poisons it.

Also, Chinese took large 50 year lease. Expect that send to China.

I know what I talk of.. deep experience, connections to the Volga grain trade and offered 50 year lease myself.

As a former Marine Corps officer I simply laugh at what most people have no clue about; capabilities.  In Iraq, we didn't even dust off our latest gear, and in Afghansitan Boeing calls that war, beta testing.

If we felt truly strategically challenged we would bring the communication world into darkness from space and then take it from there.

There are two drone stealth space shuttles ripping around up there doing who knows what to everyone's satellites.  On earth we are the only military with laser and kinetic mobile and deployed, which by the way destroys the Sunburn.  Etc, etc. etc.

By the way, I do not advocate any of our foreign policy and rather us shrink back to fortress America and let the rest of world whack it out on your own.  Don't forget to learn Russian, German, or Mandarin though.

People are the same everywhere... Soldiers are the same everywhere. To say otherwise is insulting and dehumanizing- to both the dwindling few who fight with us, as well as to those who fight against us, while subtly sewing the seeds of our own defeats.

The reason the US has an outsized ability to kill and impose its will with relative impunity (even among our own) is a function of the the outsized influence of, and investment in, the military industrial complex, nothing more. That is the awful and perverse truth, that we hide from.

Tactics are a function of available tools and resources.

The first case is a fault- both morally and strategically. Moreover, when we say are going to fight (and win) and then (repeatedly) fail to do so, our friends become collaborators in the eyes of our victors, and are generally not accorded the same human respect that US actually does accord others (with a relative few and overly well noted exceptions). So who have we successfully killed more of- our friends or foes?

The US military "may" have become more professional with the abolition of draft (on a short enough timeline...), but at the expense of the mindless indentured servitude that comes with decreased civic participation.

However, Americans, generally, (both inside an outside the military) continue to goalseek by employing lower standards to achieve paper and phyrric victories or success within the retreating borders of our minds.

When some illiterate tattooed bitch who can't even do a couple pull-ups is an acceptable front line force with which to instill fear in our enemies and earn the respect of our allies? We are scraping the bottom of the barrel, and need to rexamine whether we have not lost all the ground gained and then some. Moreover, we are paying top dollar for the privilege of scraping the bottom of the barrel, both by international standards and what the US pays non-banking civilians.

Now excuse me while I strap on my threadbare newspaper boots and 100lb pack and cover 25 miles a day while always marching uphill.

Most commenters here and elsewhere seem to be caught up in the'things that go boom' mode of thinking.I'm not especially worried about nukes - though maybe I should be. I am much more worried about lethal bugs which don't take even a little bit of high technology to deliver. The fact that Russian military hardware isn't as effective as it supposedly once was has no bearing on their capability to deliver a cloud of little bugs over the western US where the prevailing winds will do the rest.

Vietnam and Singapore.  Interesting.  Could Russian military presence there be more about China than the U.S.?

You bet.  Typical Russian chess moves.  Russia fears China, not the U.S. as they sit in their backyard.  This whole U.S./ Russia brush up is theatre.

Chess moves?

Anything that would weaken China would serve better 'americans' than russians. Does it mean that 'americans' are getting the russians to do their dirty work?

Maybe time for the russians to warm up to the idea of playing blitz because 'americans' are on their borders, completing the military surrounding move they started decades ago.

Next stop: Moscow.

And Russians, on the other hands, are so far from Washington DC, the capital of the 'american' world.

More desperation from the russians.
Talks instead of walks.

The russians are planning to. Good. In the meantime, 'americans' play long term games.

They are slowly but surely building up Ukraine in the kind of trojan horse they like to infiltrate in other groups in order to keep that group under control (see the infiltration of the german trojan horse in the EU for example)

'Americans' are making the russian military presence in Ukraine a sensitive issue. This will provide material for a future Ukrainian government to play both sides a la double agent. Russian bases are going to stay in Ukraine but it is going to come with a higher price. Ukraine will get the better of the two worlds. Exactly the way 'americans' want it to be.

Want to turn out the gas pipes? Suddenly, talks about the legitimacy of the russian bases will surface. Why not an application to NATO? Still want to turn off the pipes?

Do not want to extend that loan? What about the bases? Since Ukraine is going to be assimilated by the 'american' world banks system, this ukraine trojan horse is going to be a direct leak from Russia to the 'american' world.

Russia better be prepared to sell more and more of their Siberian natural resources to the customers 'americans' will choose for them, they will never collect enough to fill the ukrainian black hole.

'Americans' are on the Russia borders and what do the Russians do? They talk.

Keep going, history has shown that 'americans' are very receptive to talks. If you have a legitimate plea according to their own laws, not only 'americans' listen but they take it into account.
Historically proven. Ask the indians.
The russians are on the right path.

A minority of Ukrainians (mostly supported and financed by NWO elites and Soros NGO-bots) have taken over the government of Ukraine.  My contacts there (in the East and West) tell me that most Ukrainians would rather have closer ties to Russia than to the EUSSR.

Whatever, I love seeing Putin telling Barry to shove it up his ass.  Unfortunately, Barry LOVES taking things up his ass.

according to my estimations and sources one quarter of Ukraine's population is pro-EU, one quarter is pro-Russia, one quarter is pro-indipendence and one quarter would prefer to have close ties to both "sides"

and so any of the currently proposed solutions would leave one quarter happy and three quarters in various degrees of unhappiness

meanwhile all this talk of "NWO elites" is distracting from two distinct realities: the equation of military force and the equation of economies

Russia has clear national interests in Ukraine. Many EU countries have clear economic interests in Ukraine (and in Russia)

the "wild card" in all this is... US interests

and don't get me into commenting this lame "EUSSR" moniker. I know Ukraine a bit from the times it was still part of the USSR

I think I agree with that. US involvment in Europe post '45 has been pretty negative on balance.

- Nearly triggered a Nuclear war in Europe in the 1980s with clodding retoric.

- Gets in the way of better relations with Russia - good for EU security and and have a "nothing to be afraid of" effect on the Russia so they losen up a little.

The idea that we keep tanks and missiles out of Europe with the US directing things is something of an oxymoron.

Putin might not be a friend of the West and is no saint - but he is no Stalin, not even in dictator terms a Mussolini, Franco or latin or African dictator.

Ukraine will probably in the end become part of the EU but the Russians will have to get a big say - Keep the Naval base, hands off the pipelines (EU needs these supplies any how).

A weak Russia is AGAINST western interests - infact the goal should be make Russia to be part of the West - the Eastern part as China and India emerge. This will have to wait post Putin though.

There is NO WAY the USSR is making a comeback - Even the Russians know this. Their military potential is mostly obsolete with only a handful of up to date military equipement of any real potency.

This game, from an Europe perspective needs a poker face and patience. We want to keep friends and find new ones. US influence here will not help. In fact a good relationship between Russia and EU will diminish US influence - something the US will be aware of.

Has there EVER really been a "good" war?

Canada managed to separate from England without one.

England (and just about every other country) managed to abolish slavery wthout one.

Helping France to win WWI just allowed the creation of the odious Versailles Treaty, which birthed Hitler and sowed the seeds of WWII.

What good did the war in Korea do?  Vietnam?  Iraq?

Pull the troops OUT of Korea, Japan, and Europe, and put them on the Southern border.  We are actually being INVADED there.

Urban Redneck Good morning, early riser?

Keep on bitching. There are some who are awake, most are asleep, and it's likely nothing can be done about our declining influence in the world (since the electeds whom we employ at great expense really work for TPTB) but as long as we've above ground we can record the history of the sinking...

How will Putin counter that move?
