Russian Military Choppers Arrive In The Crimea

Tyler Durden's picture

Naval blockade, check. APCs and military vehicles rolling into the Crimean, check. Mysterious gunmen taking over the parliament and airports, check. And now: Russian military helicopters, which as the clip below shows were sighted on their way to Belbek airport in Sevastopol.

Ahh, the Hind. Been making those since the 60s.

The Hind is an oldie but a goodie. Not very sophisticated, and would probably get fucked up three ways to Sunday by an Apache. But it is very good at what it is built to do: Own the ground it surveys.

And Ukraine has nothing to combat it with, save the occasional man-portable, shoulder-fired SAM.

The Apache has no lift capability and only 2 seats (there's another MiL helicopter/app for that...)

A better comp would a Sikorsky CH-53, which is also still in use and can provide both lift and firepower, and was also introduced in the mid 1960's.

It's impossible to discern the exact variant(s), and hence their age and sophistication, by a low resolution YouTube video at a distance.

Fri, 02/28/2014 - 12:13 | 4489278 thatthingcanfly
thatthingcanfly's picture

The 53 is a bit more modern than that. The Navy's MH-53E (seen in my avatar) was made in the mid-eighties. When I was flying them ten years ago, these birds were getting tired; and they badly need replacement today. I hope Sikorski's CH-53K is a success. They did a top-to-bottom redesign - dry polymer rotor head, fly-by-wire, wider cabin, new more efficient rotor blades.

But it's not a gunship. We can strap some .50 cals on the doors & windows. That's about it.

Yeah, it's a low-res video. But one may assume they're the MI-24 variants, rather than the export -25 and -35s. Probably have updated av/comm setups.

Thanks for the details. None of my friends will buy American unless the US is paying, which takes out some of the headaches of haggling and negotiating over details, unlike with the Russians, Ukrainians, Euros, or Wankers.

What are the Americans using if they have to insert men and materials, with some minimal firepower? Or are the few US taxdollars I still pay to Uncle Sam being used to buy multiple helicopters where one will suffice?

Sat, 03/01/2014 - 17:37 | 4494617 thatthingcanfly
thatthingcanfly's picture

We'd use -53s, with some Cobra gunship escorts. The problem with aircraft is that they're very nearly REQUIRED to specialize. Making a helo that does both assault AND personnel delivery means compromises to both. The -53 might not have much armor or weaponry, but it can transport 55 armed Marines and all their gear. Or externally lift an artillery piece or Humvee.

Can they be flying to the Russian naval base, which is not far away from the Belbek airpot?  I flew into the Belbek airport this past summer.  It was mostly a military airport, with a tiny civilian air terminal that does not even have a baggage carousel.  The situation does not seem to be bad enough at least for now for Russia to land choppers where Ukrainian military airplanes and choppers are.

Russian military intervention in any part of Ukraine is not going to happen in near or not so near future.

People believe what they want to believe, sometimes they even see what they believe, even when it's not there.

I remember how local Ukrainian media reported how Yanukovich's plane landed somewhere in the middle east, right after he had fled his residence. What they actually saw on flightradar24 was private austrian A-319, which took off from Zhuliany (IEV) airport and landed in the middle east (can't remember the city's name). What they did not bother to check is how flightradar24 works, they probably have no idea that ADS-B transponders are not installed on all aircraft, and even when installed, can be probably turned off. But hey, sensational news sells clicks, no one bothers to check twice, or to question the logic behind the news. It turned out that he was in Harkiv on that day.

Russia isn't going to back down to "strong wording" from the West. This is not Syria, this is much closer to its borders. In fact, Crimea was fought over many times before and Russia has been always involved.

The States and EU can't even provide a coherent aid package to those ragtags in Kiev. Watch this evolve. It will be looked upon as Russia reasserting its interests in the region. If you think US and EU are going to punish Russia in any way for taking back Crimea - financially or militarily (lol) - you are deluding yourself.

So far, the Russian Federation is just increasing the security/military assets at and around its naval base.  Russia is highly unlikely to invade Crimea or the eastern provinces.  It's playing a waiting game.

Crimea's parlament  {they are autonomous and probably have roughly the home rule power Scotland does} is voting on MOAR autonomy I believe in a few days.  Russia movements are likely a strong signal to Kiev, as well as to NATO, not to roll tanks into Crimea or "punish separatists" as some of the more openly fascist Kievan Putsch characters have already threatened.

The notion Russia would invade and try to annex Ukraine was and is crazy talk.  Crimea is a different story, but they are most concerned with the base, which they will never give up.  As to Ukraine, they probably want some sort of vote to happen before anything else.. maybe a couple votes.

If Crimea splits off there may be a desire for further splitting from the Tatars.  And if so, the Tatars should get their own state if they wish.  The Tatar element could well bring in the car bombings and fuckery we've see elsewhere in the Muslim world, funded, as is so often the case, by US clandestine agencies and their subcontractors.

Too bad the religions of the world are too busy with other shit to launch a push for peaceful and democratic resolution.

Yeah, I don't see that they're doing much more than beefing up their own perimeter. They'll wait to see if Yatseniuk/Tymoshenko are really in charge or not, and respond accordingly.  In the meantime, they're not going to let the fascist paramilitaries gain the high ground in the areas they've long considered non-negotiable.  I would be very surprised if Russia did anything of an aggressive nature in the short term.  They can make their installations pretty near impregnable without exceeding the "normal rotation of troops and gear back from Sochi" explanation.

The referendum is on May 25th, although anything could change in those 3 months.
The Russian Federation doesn't need to act aggressively over Crimea. The Crimeans themselves will staunchly defend their autonomy from the usual infiltration and subversion, and call upon assistance from their brothers next door if they need it.

It's great how all Russians/Eastern Europeans have dash-cams.  If we did that in the US our cops would completely flip out.  Here in Minneapolis we have a hard core of about 3% of our cops who are completely out-of-control and cost the city millions per year in payouts when they decide to stomp the crap out of somebody who isn't too screwed up to hire an attorney and push the matter.  There's a suggestion floating around that the cops wear body cameras to record all their interactions with us untermenschen, and of course the police union is against it.  Heck, whenever there are protests here the cops first attack everyone with a camera and smash it.  That's getting tough to do since now everyone has smartphones.  No doubt soon enough every cop will have some sort of phone jamming device.

The revolution deserves to be described in a few lines: Yanukovych was not too bad a president, prudent though weak. Still the Ukraine came to the edge of financial abyss. (You can read more about it in my previous piece) He tried to save the situation by allying with the EC, but the EC had no money to spare. Then he tried to make a deal with Russia, and Putin offered him a way out, without even demanding from him that the Ukraine join the Russian-led TC. This triggered the violent response of the EC and the US, as they were worried it would strengthen Russia.

Russian will never invade Crimea...

It's army will just be there, ready to prevent any repression, when the crimean independantists will challenge Kiev before deciding to join Russia. Just because these independantists should not be threatened by Ukrainian's army, you see.

So it's basically a done deal for Russia : there will be a referendum, independance (or at least very extended autonomy) will win (trust Putin on that point), and the central government in Kiev will have either to let go, or to attack Russian's military.

Red Dawn for Eurokraine, Remember WWII was less than 70 years ago, yet we still are complacent thinking the world is any safer, its not, in fact globalization and the degredation of developed economies, the arbitrage of labor and resources and the control of a very few over the many, means we are closer to the canary in the coal mine then most people think.  This is nothing more than control of resources and Russia is not going to sit back and watch the Chinese and Americans dictate policy.  Its ok though who cares stocks go up regardless so make money and quit complaining.  Remember $65Bln a month thats 12 zeros every month going straight to the dealers, going straight into the equity market , so what is the problem, a lot of people me included can complain all we want about how shitty the economy is, but that does not matter, the economy does not matter, imagine you had a company that generates $65bln a month in profits with ZERO production and labor costs, that is the equity markets via the FED transfer mechanism, so in fact the fundamentals make perfect sense and since the US is the safe haven, US markets should rise by $65Bln a month give or take a bit more with leverage and any down move is the weaker hand that needs some money for some other asset purchase, So when the fundamentalists say that this aint making any sense, than just ask them how they would disperse $65bln a month...
