The Invasion So Far: Visual Summary Of Russian Forces And Movements

Tyler Durden's picture

Moments ago Interfax reported that two Russian anti-submarine warships have appeared off the coast of Ukraine's Crimea region, violating an agreement on Moscow's lease of a naval base, according to a Ukrainian military source as saying. Then again what else would a Ukrainian military source say. The source added that the two vessels, part of Russia's Baltic Fleet, had been sighted in a bay at Sevastopol, where Moscow's Black Sea Fleet has a base.

So imagine two extra anti-sub ships off Sevastopol in the map below which until this latest update from Contemporary Issues and Geography, was keeping an accurate running update of all the most recent developments in the staggered Russian invasion of the Ukraine.

NATO to Ukraine: Look, this breakup isn't your fault. It's mine. I'm just not good enough for you.

There are plenty of other guys out there who would just love to meet you. Look there's a handsome

Russian guy at the bar really eyeing you up and down.

Yeah, this (Crimea) is more like the reoccupation of the Rhur. The rest of the Ukraine will be like the Sudatenland. Then Poland will be like, well, Poland. We have a ways to go. Do not fret my friends.

As stated above, the outcome of this is an "independent" Crimea that will join union with Russia in a few years. I do not think Putin will over reach. I do worry about our king, though. He has been known to think things like "healing the planet" and "turning back the rise of the oceans" are within his means and powers.

Treaties are used to justify desired actions, not to actually compel a nation to undesired action.

Then, of course there is always the option of the ROYAL "fuck you", simply accuse the current "regime" of violating the treaty and WITHDRAW from it.

It's not like there are not a ton of US personnel in Ukraine who could open fire on a crowd of women and children in front of a video camera (or for bonus world wide sympathy points release YouTube of some people dressed as neo-Nazis slaughtering Jews). It is not like the US Government would not stoop to such level to achieve its desired objectives.

The greatest parallel I can find to this is the Sino-Viet war in 1979.

1979:

Vietnam was shelling Yunnan, invading Cambodia and fucking with China with confidence that it had the protection of the USSR.  China went in under pretext of protecting Chinese peoples in Vietnam, took back the Spratleys and some border lands which were historically Chinese which had fallen into the hands of Vietnam because reasons.  Disputed who "won" this, but the end result was China gained back territory and sent a message to the world that the support and protection of the USSR was worthless.  A loss on the Chinese side would have been disastrous for the Chinese government calling into question the legitimacy regardless of facts on the ground.

2014:

Germany and the US riled up their crowds in the Ukraine in what amounted in a coup to wrest the most important Russian military base away and secure resources.  The land in question, of course, is traditionally Russian.  In a case of separation, this outcome is Russia regaining territory and slapping NATO/US/EU in the face by sending a message that their protection and support is worthless.  Russia losing this would be a disaster calling into question the military might of Russia, destroying what is left of Russian pride and probably sparking a massive military expansion.

Immediately following Vietnam was the USSR war in Afghanistan, which basically helped end the USSR.  If/When the US loses this, be on the lookout for a similar distraction war which will be long and costly with the potential to basically end the US (can you say Iran?).

I really very want to see the U.S. sent troops to the Crimea. I really want to see how the U.S. military is able to fight against real and a serious opponent - Russian army, but not the Papuans with Kalashnikovs. But most of all I want to see how the local indigenous population of Crimea, will be glad to see the United States Army. And how will burn Crimean land underfoot US occupiers.

Ha, Ha, Ha... you are funny. Gufawed out load - The Russian army a real and serious opponent. Oh, man, that was a good one! Fell out of my chair at that one, I did.

I can't think of anything quite as disasterously incompetent than the Russian army except the Ukrainian Army, King Barak, and the Court Jester duo of Biden and Kerry.

Combat against the Russian army would look very much like combat of US forces against the Iraqi army, or Isreali forces against Syria. Russian training, doctrine, and equipment are all inferior. Decades of combat performance have proven it. Disregard empirical evidence if you will, but only at your own peril.

How can Ukraine fight Russia - first they have kit as good as Russian stuff. Second, they can borrow a bunch of money created by the magical Bernak money machine and buy the latest gear from europe and the US, hire US and British reservists to operate, and kick Russia's arse. Our defense contractors would love this outcome and are probably lobbying for it as we speak.

PS: Please do not think I advocate in any way the US fight Russia either in the Ukraine or anywhere else, for that matter. Here is my take:

Russia today is only a more hyper-crony capitalist state than the US at this point, and while Putin is an enemy of freedom, he is a far away enemy. Instead, we have enemies of freedom much closer to home. By that, I do not mean near our borders, but rather within the US who threaten your actual home, you know, the one your kids sleep in at night. While Russian forces are very unlikely to ever take away your freedom, there are many people already here trying to subjugate us. Do I need to walk donw the list?

Do not let them distract you. Yes, Putin is the enemy, but he is not the enemy who threatens you and me. Ignore this distraction which you cannot do anything about in any event, and keep your focus on our own business at hand.

Wow - such hostility. Beligerance does not make you right.

I will only state that I do know what I am talking about. So any attempt to present credentials is rather pointless.

Let's take some of your statements:

"...the Russian army is equiped way better for defence." The modern Russian army has never been better equiped for "defense." I don't even know where to start. How about with the "The Military Doctrine of the Russian Federation" approved by Putin on 05 FEB 2010 which states: "14. Military conflicts will be distinguished by speed, selectivity, and a high level of target destruction, rapidity in manoeuvring troops (forces) and firepower, and the utilization of various mobile groupings of troops (forces). Possession of the strategic initiative, the preservation of sustainable state and military command and control, and the securing of supremacy on land, at sea, and in the air and outer space will become decisive factors in achieving objectives."

This is the description of a dynamic, operationally offensive minded doctrine. Later, under Section III, "Military Policy," paragraph 17, "The Russian Federation's military policy is aimed at ... utilization of the Armed Forces and other troops as a means of attack for the purpose of defending and safeguarding the security of the Russian Federation and also the interests of its allies." Hardly defensive sounding.

I could go on and on and on about Russian doctrine, policy, unit organization, equipment characteristics, training, etc. When the Russians go to war, they mean to go on the offensive. This does not mean they are evil, it just means they choose and aggressive, offensive style of warfare, just like the US.

"you F15 would be dropping like flies" You must be kidding. How many F-15's have been lost in combat? If you are struggling with the answer, the answer is ZERO, despite the best efforts of its adversaries.

"you have no clue what a S400 battery is capable of" Oh yes I do, and I am not impressed. Despite all the blather, the S400 is just an S300 upgrade and has been around for decades. The US military often refers to it as the S400/300. There is nothing revolutionary about it at all. The USAF has developed quite a number of ways to defeat the system, both technological and tactical. The easiest means is to simply overwhelm the sites with standoff weapons. They are only mobile in a very general sense. They take hours to pack up and move. As soon as the S300/400 lights off their massive radars they are nothing but fixed site targets. Easy kills, really.

"you jets carriers are a bunch of sitting ducks against russian hyper sonic tropedos and yes they literally fly in water" They do not litterally fly in water. They use supercavitation which creates an air bubble in front of the torpedo. This means, however, the weapon cannot have an active homing system. Accurate firing solutions underwater are very difficult and related to the inability of passive sonars to derive precise bearings. This is why submarines in WWII used periscopes or even surfaced to fire torpedos. Submarines attack from underwater now only because of their torpedos' ability to actively detect and track targets after firing. It's a blind weapon, like a bullet, or WWI torpedo. This is why the original version of the supercavitatig weapon carried a nuclear warhead, since there was no hope of getting an accurate shot off and the the only hope of causing damage was trying to get close enough so a nuclear weapon would have some effect on the target. If a submarine goes active on its sonar, it dies REAL quick against a modern battle group. In addtion, supercavitating torpedos are short range weapons and a submarine has to get to point blank range to use it. The problem is the carrier runs around at high speed all the time. That's why they have nuclear reactors, so they never have to slow down. If the submarine tries to match for intercept to get into firing position, it has to go fast too, and then by laws of physics makes lots and lots of noise, so it dies real quick. They can dive real deep to quite themselves at speed, but once speed is over a few knots, the passive sonars do not work, and the submarine loses track of the carrier. Theses torpedos have been around for 45 years. The US developed the same technology but does not use it as it has been judged to be tactically useless. Finally, the US Navy has finally deployed active anti-torpedo torpedos. Torpedos are VERY noisy and easy to detect. Trials against threat torpedos have been flawless, with 100% kill rates.

"and you know the chineese and russian can take down you GPS sattelites anytime??" Nope, not really, and not even close. Russia has no deployable ASAT capability, period. Othe ASAT capabilites held by the US and China can only reach low earth orbit. GPS systems are in Geosynchronus orbit at 22,236 mi altitude, and unreachable by ANY known ASAT system by a very large margin. And their systems are just as dependent upon GPS as ours. The real danger is to Russia in that the US suddenly chooses to encrypt its GPS signals, denying it to them. It's a flick of a switch capability built into the GPS constellation. Our military systems are designed to use the encrypted GPS signals if required so we can deny GPS to adversaries whenever we choose. It's a major strategic vulnerability for everyone EXCEPT the US.

"whats the US army be like without brains??" I would assert the US army currently lacks brains now, so it will not be any different. (Ok, this is a service dig... couldn't help myself.)

"your army is good enough to kill around a bunch of dudes with AK47s" Good then - the Russians have lots of AK-47's, too. (Again a joke, but the guy I am responding to is just too funny.) OK, so here's the deal. The AK-47 is a piece of crap. Even the Russians recognized it. It was very unreliable. That's why production stopped in 1959, and it was re-engineered and issued as the AKM (Avtomat Kalashnikova Modernizirovanniy is our best transliteration). For some unknown reason, everyone who does not know better calls the AKM the AK-47. The AKM is the standard weapon we find on the battlefield. If you know anything about them, they are easy to distiguish from each other.

"sucking at that anyway you know your hero army guys were switching to AKs in Iraq anytime they had the chance droping the m4s like hot potatos?" In multiple combat tours in Iraq and Afghanistan, I have never seen or heard of any US soldier adopting the AKM in preference to the M-4. Nor would any Soldier ever do so unless in the most dire circumstance as they are not trained to use the weapon, nor have access to ammunition, logistical support, etc. The M-4 is a solid weapon. I have personnally fired over 1,000 rounds from a single gun in a single day without any problem whatsoever. I could go on and on and on about how and why the M-4 is the superior weapon. But, wow, this post is really seriously over long as is. But there is no other way to expose such utter uninformed ignorance.

"get a fucking clue yo NSA dipshit" Wow, that was intelligent and useful. I hope I demonstrated who does, and who does not have a clue here. Please judge for yourselves.

I also believe Slick Clinton, John Major and Boris Yeltsen signed a 1994 agreement that if Ukrainia gives up their nukes, the US and British would maintain their borders from the then new Russian Federation. There is basically a piece of paper that says that the US and the Brits are bound to assist the Ukraine from invasions on their border.

This could turn into a bucket of shit really fast.

No need for Ukraine to "ask NATO for help":

1. Their own military has been suspiciously absent and silent during the whole uprisings, and are still silent.  This goes beyond "strange" or "suspicious".  It is very deliberate.

2. They have enough strength to inflict enough damage to any aggressor, to cause that aggressor to lose domestic support.  For info on their strength, see

http://www.globalfirepower.com/country-military-strength-detail.asp?coun...

p.s. And as for having financial troubles that require EU/US help, look at

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_external_debt

As I've said before: if you research the financial solvency of countries that are rich in energy resources or gold, but less than friendly to the US/Fed dictates, you too may notice a pattern of countries succumbing to regime change due to US 'pressures' and "kinetic meddling".

I think she's a lot smarter than people give her credit for. She could be a neocon tool but you'd think if she was they would give her some support, which they don't. The republican establishment seems to wish that she would just go away. I'm sure McStain was told to make her his running mate in order to torpedo his campaign.

She may have guessed the invasion, but for the wrong reasons, so it was erroneous. The West is invading Ukraine financially to take over the world to install an NWO based on a banking cartel. The East is invading to prevent that. Ultimately, a world with 2 or more opposing enemies is probably better than a world with a single evil empire.

Putin would do Europe a favor if they sent paratroops to take over the EU in Brussels and put most of the politicians there on trial especially Baroso and Van Rompouy.   Most Europeans would cheer.

@IrridiumRebel: "He is interested in only Ukraine."

He wants to make sure that the EU keeps getting Russian and Iranian gas, thus preventing the Saudis and American from muscling in.  If Europeans use more gas and less oil, this reduces their reliance on ME (Saudi) oil and their enslavement to the USD.  It's not the EU (EUR) that need to worry, but the US (USD) that need to worry: It's a Zero-Sum game for Energy and energy-backed currencies.

https://positivity.wordpress.com/2009/04/21/energy-pipelines-in-eurasia-...

http://www.oilmaps.ru/index.php

The false flag event that worries me, is that the first shoe has already been dropped:  Ukraine voluntarily reduces its gas demand from Russia by 80% may be for more than financial reasons.  If there is an attack on the gas lines that prevents flow from Russia into the EU, this would open the door for ME gas to be delivered, and 'paves' the way for an alternate/safer route via Turkey and Bulgaria, for example.  Stranger things have been known to happen.

The small amount of LNG the Brits imported in 2012 that did not come from North Sea pipelines, or from across the channel, came from ME via LNG tanker. From memory it amounted to ~13% of imported UK consumption in that year. You'd need a huge fleet of LNG tankers and hope (i.e. acquire the capability) that Suez remained open. As the North Sea gives up the ghost Europe is stuck, it's going to be Vlad's pipelines, or nowhere near enough cheap gas delivery to Western Europe. Already UK is buying large amounts of Russian, Canadian, and US coal.

The gas will be next, and is going to be mostly coming in via pipe, rather than ship.

Maybe the US and its blind followers should give some thought to Ron Paul:

Look, we are bankrupt as a nation. Our army marches in Chinese boots, while our air force flies on Saudi oil. We cannot continue to enforce a Pax Americana while our southern border allows illegals and terrorists to pour into our country. And we certainly shouldn’t be footing the defense bill for countries with whom our industries compete in the global marketplace. Bring our soldiers home. Secure America first.

Can you reference this?  It sounds Ron Paul-ish except for "terrorists to pour into our country".  As far as I have heard Paul say, all the domestic terrorists have been gathered, funded and given a plan by the FBI.

Thanks.

Not trying to be a dick but I don't think he said those words -- I think it's being attributed to him.  A google search suggested that it was from his "last speech" in congress (which is AWESOME - you basically want to yell "fuck yeah!" about every 30 seconds) but I can't find those words there:

http://nation.foxnews.com/ron-paul/2012/11/15/last-speech-ron-pauls-fare...

another site seems to suggest it's from a Paul-ite summarizing Paul's philosophy with the Paul-ites words:

http://bumrejects.myfreeforum.org/index.php?component=content&topicid=21...

The reason I'm suspicious is, if any politician thought terrorists were pouring into the country they'd probably back the NSA and DHS in whatever domestic spying was needed.  Ron Paul ABSOLUTELY doesn't believe we should give up our rights to Big Brother.

Anyway if you find a time/date/transcript of the speech please post.   Cheers

Well done.

Too many times 'quotes' are attributed to people and they were never uttered.

My particular pet peeve 'quote' is the one with Jefferson talking about how the banks through first inflation and then deflation will force Amercans to wake up as slaves on the land their forefathers fought for (or something like that). Totally bogus (though Jefferson did warn about the threat to Liberty of the monied interests & opposed a central bank like the Bank of England).  False quotes don't help an argument.

According to Time magazine's Zeke Miller, Obama skipped the meeting. "Obama did not attend the meeting, but WH official says he has been briefed by Susan Rice and his national security team," says Miller.

Noted this yesterday but again, has anyone noticed the direct correlation between the significant increase in problems around the globe in EM's (e.g., Ukraine, Turkey, Thailand, Venezuela, etc.) and the Fed's decision to begin tapering since late 2013? Again, the world's CBs (and specifically the Fed) really have no idea just how big the international economic problems are and how they continually throw fuel on the fire. I don't believe these SFBs have any idea just how deep they're in and that all easy exits where closed years (actually decades) ago. But hey, don't worry as it looks like the problems in Ukraine can be blamed on the weather as overall, the weather looks fairly friendly to the military right now (not too hot, too cold, not too much snow, etc.).

Both the Russians and the Eurpeans.  Europe with a population of 734 million obtains 30% of its fuel and natural gas via piplines that route through the Ukraine.  He who controls the energy piplines has the power and can impose their will on the people.

The vast majority of Ukraine has not been invaded by Russia.  So far, only the Crimea has actually been invaded, and the eastern 30% of the country is flying Russian flags.  The western 70% of the country, and the portion of the pipelines running through it, is still under nominal control of the Ukrainian government.  I don't know why the US would lift a finger here.  Everybody in Crimea is Russian.  Give it to them.

I've had a guy say, "I'll just put the tip in, no more." They usually can't stop too well once they get going.

I guess that might be some insight into why this situation is "Fucked."

Russia and US are neither right nor wrong. There is no first blood. This is ongoing, been ongoing, everyone has meddled so much there is no organic situation, there are no organic players, IT IS FUCKED.

Russia and the US/EU/NATO should leave it all alone, but even then, the outcome is fucked and unfair.

FUCKED.

Does not seem particularly persuasive....

Actually, it's the ones where the pipelines originate that call the shots.  that would be Russia.  Ukraine can mess with them at their peril...and the peril of EU, too.

Russa-Gazprom has other pipelines that can bypass the Ukraine to get nat gas to Europe.

Yeah, but volume kinda matters to revenues, and when a massive investment in rapidly depreciating infrastructure, makes no money, it makes yer ass bleed $$$, Hemorrhagic-Ebola style.
