The Invasion So Far: Visual Summary Of Russian Forces And Movements

Tyler Durden's picture

Moments ago Interfax reported that two Russian anti-submarine warships have appeared off the coast of Ukraine's Crimea region, violating an agreement on Moscow's lease of a naval base, according to a Ukrainian military source as saying. Then again what else would a Ukrainian military source say. The source added that the two vessels, part of Russia's Baltic Fleet, had been sighted in a bay at Sevastopol, where Moscow's Black Sea Fleet has a base.

So imagine two extra anti-sub ships off Sevastopol in the map below which until this latest update from Contemporary Issues and Geography, was keeping an accurate running update of all the most recent developments in the staggered Russian invasion of the Ukraine.

Eastern Ukraine has a lot of fertile farmland, a breadbasket I've heard.  New fascist farmers from the West would like a crack at owning it and employing the impoverished serfs. You know, give them some money initially as a bail out, then foreclose on them when they go bust again.  Works every time!

>>>New fascist farmers from the West would like a crack at owning it and employing the impoverished serfs.

To hear the Russians explain it, serfdom was actually invented by the Polish overlords of Western Ukraine, and from there it spread east as the Russian elites learned to appreciate serfdom's "advantages".

I might be wrong, but I seriously doubt Putin has any desired to go beyond Crimea, or possibly the whole of eastern Ukraine (about 30% of the country).  I think we're out of it unless we decide to get in it.

You are probably right.  When I mentioned that "it" is coming, I meant the tyranny of central bank and plutocracy controlled societies and the wars that result, not that this is necessarily a WWIII provoking black swan event with direct consquences for America.  Also,  I don't believe that be being informed and opinionate about this topic, or others, here at ZH means that we are armchair anything.

What Americans are tired of is all these militaristic adventures TPTB keep trying to drag us into.  Finally, enough people got vocal and shouted down the idea of boots on the ground in Syria.  Now, only months later, we have this sabre rattling in Ukraine.  I agree with Carl Popper on this.  Why don't we stay out of this one, and the next one, too.  Show me where the US has a clear security interest, and I will saddle up and join the fray.  Otherwise, keep this country out of it.  Tell the MIC, the Bankers, & Neo-cons NO.

i agree with this.

having said that "one military adventure begets another" too.
We simply have no way of guaranteeing outcomes here.

As with the US Revolutionary War..."it was all about land grants"...and i'm not talking "40 acres and a mule" (and i apologize for using that expression btw.)

You're talking "a million acres" here that...well, not in theory but in reality through force of arms "one would have title to." One look at the history of the US West shows "people have fought over this."

And now you tell me "this land is very fertile"? "Already covered with railroads"?
"Contains the biggest unsinkable ship" (Crimea) in all of Europe?

I would regard this situation as very dangerous indeed.
In other words...yes..."there is an incentive to intervene"...but no, it has nothing to do with ideology at all.

NATO is a paper tiger - does anyone seriously imagine that the candy-asses in either Brussels or DC would actually launch a military action? Britain might be crazy enough but would be hard pressed to act alone - besides Ukraine doesn't threaten any vital British interests nor does britain need Russian gas.

All talk and bluster. Oh, and red lines and meaningless sanctions. Squeeze Russia with sanctions and watch what happens to EU gas supplies.

Of course Obama could always send potty mouth Vicky to the Russian border where she could shout "Fuck Russia!" And then we could all have fun watching as cossacks think she is offering to fuck Russians. Some of them might even be hard up enough to take her up on it.

Press Briefing by Gerry Rice, Director, IMF Communications Department | 27/2/14

But there’s more…

Statement by Bag handler IMF Managing Director Christine Lagarde on Ukraine

Ms. Christine Lagarde, Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), made the following statement today in Washington, DC:

“The Ukrainian authorities informed me today of their request for support from the IMF. We are ready to respond and, in the coming days, will send an IMF fact-finding team to Kiev to undertake a preliminary dialogue with the authorities. This will enable the IMF to make its usual technical, independent assessment of the economic situation in Ukraine and, at the same time, begin to discuss with the authorities the policy reforms that could form the basis of a Fund-supported program. We are also discussing with all our international partners--bilateral and multilateral--how best to help Ukraine at this critical moment in its history. In that regard, we are encouraged by the many statements of support that have been expressed."

I’m in absolute tears from laughing so hard. Haven’t even made it over to the BIS and World Bank sites. Will return later, have to get myself out the snickering mode.

the brief article at the source, amplification in bold is mine.

Time to put to rest the Cold War mentality

When it comes to the chaos in Ukraine, the term “Cold War” keeps cropping up in the western media. 2014 marks the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, and CNN is currently broadcasting a documentary series revisiting the history of the Cold War. Yet in reality, the antagonism showed by the western media towards Russia during the Ukraine turmoil and the Sochi Olympics seems to remind us that the past remains close.

The reason is not hard to find: some are still using the mindset formed during the Cold War period to view and deal with the world today. The dissolution of the Soviet Union and the unipolar international system that it left behind led some from the West to gloat over their “victory”. However, their satisfaction has faded in the light of worries that Ukraine might turn back to the east and create a balance of interest that leaves the West in an unfavorable position. When Ukraine shows signs of leaning to the West, they breathe a sigh of relief for the “European moment”.

The political, economic and security theories that belonged to the Cold War era still dominate many people’s minds nowadays. The concerns some in the West feel for Ukraine show their hostility towards Russia, a legacy carried on from the past. An article published by the Russian newspaper ??????????? ?????? points out that the main reason for the West’s antagonism towards Russia is that the latter refuses to adopt the ideology of the former, and that still provokes anger.

The complexity of current international relations originates from the fact that major powers are undergoing a period of adjustment in the distribution of capabilities in their spheres of influence, and accordingly in the balance of international rules and regulations. The current situation requires nations to update their views of each other, shed perceptions that have been rendered obsolete, and seize opportunities to explore new space for cooperation. The rift between the West and Russia can only be mended gradually by trust accumulated through collaboration on specific issues.

Present needs leave no doubt that only through breaking the shackles of the Cold War mentality can we avoid unnecessary confrontation and look forward to an international relations system that operates more smoothly in the future.

Cold war is useful to the propagandists. It's a 50 year old Macey's parade baloon, patched and puffed, blown up for all to stare in horror. The character is unrecognisable, invalid, stupid. Find the guy who holds the rope and kick him in the balls.

"The rift between the West and Russia can only be mended gradually by trust accumulated through collaboration on specific issues."

Thing is they've already done quite a lot of that. The endless pissing on Russia by our homo-infatuated media was pretty annoying in the lead up to Sochi, primarily from the ABC, and they only toned it down once many Australians began openly complaining about the bitchiness and told the ABC to shut the fuck up about it.

It's time for some people to realize that the Gulag Archipelago isn't actually operating any more, that Stalin is in fact dead, that Russia is not communist, and there's only been about a dozen Russian leaders since Stalin, and the Soviet Union doesn't exist anymore, due to the free choice to just dissolve it, and replace it with a 'capitalistic' style democracy and constitution.

It's not Vlad sucking up your phone calls and emails you know, it's your own bloody 'side'.

A group of Cherokee children has gathered around their Grandfather. They are filled with excitement and curiosity. That day there had been  quite a tumultuous conflict between two adults and their Grandfather was called to mediate. The children are eager to hear what he has to say about it.

One of the children pops the question that puzzles him. “Grandfather, why do people fight?” “Well” the old man replies “we all have two wolves inside us, you see. They are in our chest. And these wolves are constantly fighting each other”. The eyes of the children have grown big by now. “In our chests too, grandfather?” asks another child. “And in your chest too?” asks a third one. He nods, “yes, in my chest too”. He surely has their attention now. Grandfather continues. “There is a white wolf and a black wolf. The black wolf is filled with fear, anger, envy, jealousy, greed, and arrogance. The white wolf is filled with peace, love, hope, courage, humility, compassion, and faith. They battle constantly”. Then he stops. It’s the child that asked the initial question that can’t handle the tension anymore. “But grandfather, which wolf wins?” The old Cherokee simply replies, “The one that we feed”.

Who is feeding or starving the Wolves in the American Government's Chest?

International IMF banksters need Ukraine to keep their fiat game afloat longer.

US people should leave this alone. If Ivan wants to protect HIS people in Crimea, it is their call.

There is no need for violence-- but NO need for fascists to seize The Ukranian Government.

US-NATO stay OUT.

He's so 20th century and follows the classic playbook of every idiot ruler before him who was too damn proud to declare himself and his nation morally and financially bankrupt. Russia's GDP is that of Italy and the average income is that of Barbados. Those are sad cold facts. He's broke and he needs to play war. Maybe the bankers have his balls. The old cold warriors are obviously happy with this confrontation. Now they are back in the drivers seat, and unlimited military spending is now justified. Profits for the corporations will be epic, they always make a killing, while poor folks kids get sucked into the only job opportunity America is economically capable of, military service. So the clock is swung back to 1950 and all America's arm chair war mongers are posting calls for war. Not planning on fighting themselves, though it should be fine for others kids.

Not sure what the posters who call for American action against Russia really expect the USA to do. They NEVER say, NEVER mention what they want done. Or do they even know that half of Ukraine is refusing to accept the illegal "right front" government in Kiev. Calling for independence and Russia assistance to reamain free from the Kiev unelected government and it collection of fascist west Ukriane nationalists. Yet our ZH cold warriors have yet to acknowledge this fact. Are you posters saying the NATO forces should invade East, South and Crimea and enforce the Kiev governments rule? Is that not a war of aggression against a population fighting for their freedom from the EU dictatorship and NATO occupation?

So, Russia is not going to touch West Ukraine, or Kiev. They will be allowed to join EU and join NATO. Russia will do nothing. But, Russia will go to war to preserve the independence of the East, South and Crimea. Quite frankly, NATO calling for Kiev's power to rule unwilling peoples is aggression and war mongering. Ukraine's borders are fake, left overs from the USSR. Russia should go to war if the Kiev illegals try to conquer the Russian Ukraine. All this cold war bullshit talk is ignorant at best, criminal at worst. So USA has a right to conquer the Russian Ukraine, not just West Ukraine??

This whole thing could have been avoided with an open source software solution to government. If governments are replaced with open source software solutions then there is no one to invade and conquer; there are would be no assets that could be taken by Goldman Sachs , by China the US or any business or Oligarch.

The CIA and NSA would be useless.

The U.S. is spent. Our Government has pissed away our reserves in the sandbox taking other kids lunch money. Russia and their new best friend China know this. They also know we have a failed leadership that is too busy tearing down a country that he does not respect or love. That is exactly why they can and will get away with what they are doing. If somehow some dumb SOB in the upper chain gets us into this, it would have everything to do with allowing someone else to come and disarm the American people so they could finish U.S. or perhaps remain in power indefinitely.

Oh the banksters and Wall Street are morally spent; as are most of our multinational corporations and nearly all of our elected officials. The American people, however, have seemed to assume a "hunker down" mentality (those not on the public dole of course).

We are giving far too much credit to the Russians and their actual ability to pull this off short of a big shootin' war--and that will almost certainly have ripple affects Sister Putin hasn't quite thought about yet.

** FLASH ** Earthquake Strikes Crimea; Russian Troops Blame U.S. HAARP - Furious - Saying U.S. "Used a Weapon of Mass Destruction against Russian Military"

March 1, 2014  11:43 PM EST -- (TRN) -- A significant earthquake has struck the Crimean peninsula in the Ukraine within the last hour and Russian military sources are claiming it was a deliberate attack by the United States using it's HAARP Array in Alaska, in retaliation for Russia placing troops into the Ukraine.

According to sources on the scene, Russian military surveillance detected INTENSE bursts of electromagnetic long-waves prior to the earthquake.  They say the bursts were specifically timed and repetitive in nature, which caused a resonance in the ground, triggering the earthquake.

They claim this was a deliberate attack by the United States and are using frightening language to describe it.  One spokesman said bluntly "The earthquake in Crimea was caused by the use of a weapon of mass destruction by the United States against the Russian Army."

Some kind of attack on Crimea definitely happened yesterday

1) If all parties agreed never to use any violence in Crimea, and if the local people were given a free choice on the future of the Peninsula, which side would win this referendum - the nationalists of the Russian-speaking and pro-Russian majority?  The answer is obvious - the pro-Russians would win.
2) If the pro-Russians are sure to win in any free and fair political contest, who is the party which would benefit from an escalation of violence in Crimea?  The answer is obvious again: the Ukrainian nationalists?
3) Considering that a clear majority of the local population is pro-Russia and that there are plenty of Russian forces in Crimea, what would the Kremlin gain by sending in Russian military forces into Crimea?  Again a obvious answer: nothing.
4) The insurgents in Kiev know that a clear majority of Crimeans is opposed to their rule, and Iatseniuk is trying to negotiate with Russia on economic issues, while Turchinov says that he will veto the repeal of the former law on languages, what could Kiev hope to achieve by sending in insurgent forces into Crimea?  Nothing, of course, it would only make things worse.
